Thank you all for the great articles. I notice when my blood sugar is on the low side a snack with a little protein helps me the most. Sometimes I will have one of those cheese sticks. They range from 60 to 100 calories. But should I be adding some sort of carb too?

Interesting reading about hypoglycemia, it's various causes, and how to eat with it. I totally disagree on the CHOICES in the sample menu, way too many carbs for most of us--but the principle of including protein is spot on!... Good basic information, but...
One thing I don't recall seeing mentioned at all is how to handle a hypoglycemic episode!
I did think THAT was rather strange... I'm going to keep my glucose tablets handy!...

www.sparkpeople.com/resource/nutrition_art icles.asp?id=1588 Just in case anyone missed it, this was the editor's choice article today... all about snacking with diabetes. It covers a lot of what we've discussed in the threads, with a brief new blurb on the inclusion of protein in snacks...

Thanks for the article on healthy sancks helps alot.
This is just a quick little blurb on disposing of lancet tips. It applies just a well to syringe needles... but I'm adding one tip: Before you follow these guidelines, check with your local health department. Some counties require that household medical waste be discarded in a specific manner, and sometimes will designate specific drop-off points, rather than using public sanitation outlets. If all else fails, talk to your doctor's office for ideas on how to get rid of these items safely...

I talked to my pharmacist about your question, RONNIE... he suggested that V8 vegetable drink is actually better anyway!--very few carbs, and plenty of potassium and sodium--even in the low sodium version as well (if that's an issue) there is a good balance. It also has a charming amount of other nutrients as well, and a low glycemic index...
I tried his advice, and it really works quite well--of course, I have different needs now with CKD so I can't drink it any more...

Doctor visit today. Lost 4 lbs since May visit- down 8 lbs since diabetes diagnosis. Found out A1C at diagnosis was 13.2 (March 2011) and June labs A1C was 6.7!!!!!! Doc & I were both very happy. I have been consistent about better eating habits and portion control. Of course I had to limit my sweets which is harder some days than others. I'm on minimal Metformin & Glymeperide and have NO desire to get on insulin like mom-I've seen what she's gone through. Thanks for all the websites listed. Can't wait to read through them.

I was in my surgeon's office, having the stitches removed from my hand this morning, and we were talking about joint issues common in diabetics, so when I got home, I looked it up and here's one of the sites I found: clinical.diabetesjournals.org/content/19/3 /132.full
Oddly enough, ALANOFLINY mentions one of these conditions too, in his blog... so here's the link if anyone wants to know more...

I have found that water aerobics is a great exercise. I had polio as a child and now have post-polio syndrome. My legs are now so weak that I have to wear braces on each leg. Plus there is an increase in fatigue. Add to this severe arthritis pain and I can hardly walk and have mod to severe pain all the time. The water aerobics class I am in is for arthritis. The water is warm and the exercises are doable. Some days I can not do all the reps but that is ok. The water aerobics increases strength in legs, core, and arms. Eases pain in joints. And has helped with weight loss.

JERBEAR82, First, I think starting a new topic for this particular question might be more appropriate in future for the kind of response you're seeking, as this is a reference library for general information and links etc... conversation makes it harder for people to find the information they are seeking... but having said that, I still want to answer! LOL
The others are absolutely correct. And I think you already know that--I can't imagine your doctor putting you on a diabetic diet and having you monitor your blood sugar without giving you the same speech WE'VE all heard a dozen times or more! LOL
The diet will continue to offer benefits, but... exercise is the other part of the prescription. It improves organ function, increases circulation, improves digestion, reduces insulin resistance... the list goes on.
I think it quite likely that your best bet is just to grit your teeth and admit that this is something you need to make happen.
Believe me, I KNOW how hard it can be--just check out my SparkPage if you don't believe me! LOL And I'm not the only one on the team with issues regarding exercise.

I do believe that some movement is necessary to keep your organs and muscles functioning...and your blood circulating. Even just twisting at your hips, raising and lowering your arms and legs. The important part is, as my Dr. told me, to do it til you sweat. Then you know it's helping.

It is difficult to do it without exercise. Exercise does the obvious: it consumer the BS. Less obvious, it increases the amount of insulin and enhances the body's ability to use it.
Start slow with the exercise and do low impact: cycling, swimming, pool exercises. As the weight comes down, it will get easier. Been there, done that!
Cheers, Catherine

Can someone tell me if it's possible to have a healthy blood sugar reading WITHOUT exercising? I am a really large man and exercise is very uncomfortable for me. I've been on a good diabetic diet for a little while now, and my fasting blood sugar is at 148. Will that continue to go down if I keep up with the healthy eating? Or will it stay high unless I exercise? Thanks so much.

There were some questions on a discussion thread that arose regarding post-prandial (after meal) blood glucose levels. I'm sharing a few of the things I found so others can look at them...
The ideal NON diabetic scenario is that two hours after a meal your blood glucose levels should have returned basically to your premeal level. With diabetes that often isn't the case... in fact it's one of the newer criteria that are being studied for pharmaceutical adjustment. Nasty thought...
I eat five or six times a day and with a sliding scale I need to know before each mini-meal what the BGL is so I can adjust my insulin doses--and that's every three hours anyway, so it's easy for me... might be difficult for others.
I have to keep in mind that if I test and my BGL is above 140, my internal organs--eyes, kidneys, blood vessels etc--are sustaining damage that may be permanent... and some doctors believe it's at 120. When I was diagnosed, my A1C was 14+... an average somewhere in the 500-600 range. I had some issues with my eyes, which have mostly healed, but my kidneys are another story. The damage didn't show up in tests until years later, but the damage was done.
Take it from me, you don't want to take the risk. Do the tests. Follow your protocols. Drink the water, get the exercise, eat the proper things in proper proportions... it's what I try to do so I can heal the things that are possible to heal, and deal with the rest.
I care about all of us on this team...
Kathy

How to add your Weight Tracker... You go to your Spark page and click on "edit my page". Go down about half way and it will show you the tracker and you can pick a background and travelling icon.

Do try the Diabetic Program..Go to your START Page under the My trackers Tab. and find which program you are on...on the left side of the page about half way down. You should have an option to change to the Diabetic program...

Don't forget to set your email preferences so you get all the General and Team emails.
For General Emails.... Go to your start page under My Trackers tab. Under your name on the left, it says something like email preferences. Click on that. A new page will pop up so you can select which emails you would like to receive.
Team Emails.... Go to the Community tab and in the drop down window, select SparkTeams. A page will come up with the SparkTeams you are on. In the box titled My Spark Teams, look all the way to the right and click on Manage My Team Emails/Settings. All of your teams will be there with boxes to check for each type of email you can receive. Choose which emails you want to receive.

I have been a diagnosed diabetic for 3-1/2 weeks now. Counting carbs has been interesting to say the least but the nutrition tracker is the greatest help. I am on 500 mg metformin 2X a day and 3 mg of glimepiride in the morning and my overnight fasting is hanging under 130, with 1 day at 97. I weighed today at Publix and had lost 1-1/2 lbs. I guess the weight will come off slow? I'll see what my doctor visit shows next Wed. I'm also on Coumadin so I have to be careful about vitamin K intake. Anyone else got this combination?

Metformin is a wonderful drug I started taking it about 3 weeks ago and went from an over night fasting of 169 to now average 114 upon waking. I also lost 11 lbs, though I have cut my carbs drastically. My sugar levels 2hrs after eating runs under 120 and shortly after that it drops below 100. I can't wait to to see all my upcoming lab work as it is also good for your cholesterol as well as the weight loss. Hope that helps...

I take 1000 milligrams of metforman 2 x a day and also 40 units of lantis 1 x a day. I did not have to start insulin until about my 2nd month of kemo last year (steroids). My goal is to be able to come off the insulin in 6 months with diet and exercise.

I have a question? I am on metformin 5oo mg 2 x a day. With proper diet and eating, are you to loose weight with Metformin? I have lost a few pounds. I am sleeping better at night since i have not been on carb overload,,,,,,,,,well except today ; - ( My DH and I took a friend and his wife on an 1 1/2 hour drive for a job interview.
We ate breakfast at Waffle house. So of course instead of eating silver dollar size buttermilk pancakes or just two,,,, I had 3 regular cakes with lots of maple syrup and not sugar free, 2 scrambled eggs and 3 really thick pieces if bacon
Then for supper we went to Hoss's for dinner. I didn't do too bad about 3 oz of sirloin, baked potato with butter and cream cheese. Salad bar with more than needed and regular ranch dressing. Then a piece of chocolate fudge brownie with ice cream and hot chocolate sauce.
Needless to say my bloodsugar tonight at 9PM was 186. This morning my fbs was 115.
I haven't had so many carbs or sweets for 3 weeks.
Tomorrow is a new day a new dawn with Praise and Thanks and back on track.
Thanks for listening and answering my Metformin question. Sue ; - )
REMEMBER: I have had this before. I know what it tastes like, AND ITS KILLING Me ! IS IT REAL HUNGER OR HEAD & HEART HUNGER?

Just completed my first week on the pump. A few frustrating spots when trying to get the doses adjusted properly (they say it takes a couple of months) but, heck, the glucose tabs are starting to taste pretty good. I should have made the change a long time ago. Can't wait to see how things look in a month or so.

Swanson Daily tip had this info today:
Health Benefits of Coconut Flour
1. Coconut flour has 10 times more fiber than white flour. Fiber is crucial to healthy digestion and cholesterol levels. 2. Adding it to baked goods lowers their glycemic level for blood sugar maintenance. 3. It’s grain- and gluten-free. 4. Coconut flour has only 120 calories per 1/4 cup.

FBS 97 finally i feel I have the morning sugars under control. It has taken some experimenting with what works for me and what does not. Wow what a difference in how I feel when my blood sugars are in the normal range and not just good enough for a diabetic

I'm surious about coconut. I've been adding in mufas to my mealf (mono unstaturated fatty acids) but have seen coconut flour in the bulk store which is gluten free. I too have heard the oil helps balance blood sugars. What about the flour?

Went to the Diabetes Fair, and got two good websites.
www.BayerSimpleSaver.com/hcp Get enrolled in a group that has a $20.00 coupon if you have insurance.
www.MyFreeStyle.com Co-pay saving on test strips.
Liked the Dexcom meter but of course not covered by Blue Cross. I am glad I went for the information.
Hope the websites are a help to somebody. I enjoyed the fair.

I have recently begun using coconut oil in my diet, my cooking and in other ways. It is good for diabetics. Even though it sounds counter intuitive, my morning (overnight) blood sugars improved when I added 1 T of coconut oil to my morning smoothie! I had a really hard time adding FAT to my food those first few times!

1 Corinthains 9:24-27 (NLT) Don’t you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win! All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. So I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing. A1C Estimated Average Glucose Conversion Table... Just went to my local Giant Eagle Food Store. They are doing blood screening and Free A1C tests. Here is a conversion chart to show what your average glucose should be to get the estimated A1C reading. I thought you'd all like to have this. Gives the A1C reading some coalation.

Hi All.... Has anyone ever heard of or used Ideal No Calorie Sweetener? I get it from a local grocery store. I Love it. No after taste and I only use 1/2 packet in my mug of coffee. 1 1/2 carbs per packet so that's only 3/4 of a carb for my coffee. Here is a link to their website.

Here is an article I found on Real Age. Peanut Butter: A Kid Favorite That's Good for Blood Sugar There's something sweet and creamy that kids love -- and it may actually be good for your blood sugar.
Researchers speculate that the unsaturated fats in nuts -- and nut butters -- may partly explain the big dip in diabetes risk. These healthy fats may somehow improve insulin sensitivity and keep your blood sugar stable. www.realage.com/tips/a-kid-favorite-thats- good-for-blood-sugar
