BARB, that sounds like a good plan to sleuth those foods. I find sugar and flour together will mess with my GERD. I started on Atorvastatin and MY GERD cam back as bad as ever. I assumed it was the stress but I decided to not take it and there is no more GERD.
I see MY GP tomorrow so we will have a chat about the Triglycerides.,
I hope your DH is liking his new job. Great plan to go to Illinois to see your parents. Anywhere near Chicago? I hope John is recovering well. Pat in Maine.

Tuesday – Relief! Have done some “sleuthing” with Dad’s problem, listening to his voice, asked him if he’s been eating his rum cake, things like that. He sound good and states he’s eating his cake. So, that says to me, I’d narrow the problem down to his hiatal hernia.

Then my Brother called today and said he’d visited Mom & Dad yesterday. Booth seemed to be doing all right. That’s good. Most importantly he said that Dad ate normally @ supper (he made salmon, asparagus potatoes and pumpkin pie! He ate a bit of all of it. So that is excellent.

Will watch it for sure (probably going down to IL next weekend) and see for myself.

Antibiotic tiring me out, but drinking my water, so feeling MUCH better each day. Hallelujah.

BARB, John is recovering slowly. I hope he keeps the sling on. I had the surgery and did everything right. I can raise my arm straight up. A friend had the same surgery she painted windows and did stuff for Christmas and she now has limited motion. PT tells us to do it and it mostly works. I hope he gets well soon. Pat in Maine.

Monday – well starting a new work week. Rainy, so no outdoor walk this morning.

Went looking for a microwave yesterday, didn’t come home with one, but there is one that goes on sale in a week, so may take advantage of that. But nothing else. That’s all right.

Yesterday was John’s 22nd birthday. Called to wish him a happy, happy. He’d been out with “the boys” to celebrate the night before. Uh huh. Kinda sorta sounda like it! But he’s doing well @ work and feeling better.

He IS wearing his sling, which is a good thing. The right shoulder did dislocate again (he WASN’T wearing the sling) and now he is. Better. And he’s sworn off motorcycles, 2 wheeled and otherwise!

Did some big-batch cooking, so have some meals now in the freezer. That’s a good thing!

Sunday – Got a good outdoor walk in already. Felt nice. It’s 55F out right now! Kind of cloudy, though, but that’s all right.

Did anyone get to see the super moon last night?? It was cloudy for us just like last month when there was another super moon.

Continuing on my antibiotic so have to be sure to get my yogurt in to replace the “good bugs” in my tummy. Love Greek Yogurt, fortunately!

Talked w/both Dad and Mom yesterday. Asked Dad what he was preparing for supper. He’s making ham casserole. I asked him if he’s been having a slice of the rum cake I’d made him after supper and he said yes. Mom was NOT in the same room. We started OUR conversation and I just quickly asked her what she was having for supper and she said the ham casserole your Dad is making. Oh . . . I just slipped in there and asked, “. . . and is that what he eats too?” She indicated yes, he eats the same as her. So . . . combining that with the fact that Dad didn’t have any raspiness or hoarseness to his voice, that was more re-assuring. Awaiting the call back from my brother.

My little sis is in the loop too, but it’s hard for her as she has her own TON of health issues, as does her husband. **SIGH** Never a dull moment!

Saturday – Much better day yesterday. Felt human again.

My brother phoned yesterday. Apparently Dad is having swallowing issues. CRUD. He has a history of a hiatal hernia, so it could be that. But there’s other possibilities too. Now I have to convince him that he NEEDS TO GET THIS CHECKED OUT. **SIGH**

So, now the other concern is if something should happen to Dad we HAVE to have a plan in place for Mom. My brother and I talked about this at great length. Part of it depends on where WE end up. I don’t feel at least right now that we’ll be moving to Madison. I PRAY we won’t actually. If not, I do know of places around here that would be suitable for the both of them.

I DO have the # for Home Health Care available around their place, and brother and I are discussing it. He’s going to visit Mom and Dad tomorrow and report back. Then in the meantime I am going to play the stealth grand inquisitor with Dad about what is going on.

So, there you have it. Never a dull moment, dang it!

James: I agree with you! That's a problem for many diabetics . . . not enough of the fiber. And I look @ the carbs and fiber to get the net carbs too. Makes a huge difference in my blood sugar.

That said, thankfully this mornings blood sugar is 75. Yesterday afternoon it was 100 - pre supper, the highest it has been for awhile, but I'd had a root canal and both the infection and the antibiotic affected the blood sugar. Not much of an appetite today, but will eat healthfully.

Friday – After calling the dentist yesterday because my jaw was swollen, he recommended I see my endodontist. She isn’t in on Thursdays, so I did find another endo who happened to be her hubby! Who knew. Part one of the root canal is done. Turns out the infection was in the soft tissue and not yet in the tooth. Apparently that’s not too common, but I am glad to say that the pain has diminished. Still looking a bit like a chipmunk, but less today.

Otherwise, just going to take it easy as I am still a bit tired, which I assume is from the infection. Resting up = doing laundry, cooking supper, dusting and vacuuming. HA – does a woman ever really rest! Nope.

Hi FSB super high but I have not taken medication properly in about six months. I need to get back to it. What I don't get is I've actually been feeling pretty good especially since I quit smoking and started exercising a couple of weeks ago. It was 285 by the way. Had to go get meter out of purse.

I think here are the points of confusion:
- the diabetes association knows carbohydrates raise blood sugar, yet eating few carbs is challenging, so they take a middle ground

- the food industry can produce high carb things very cheaply, so they try to make those things sound healthy with slogans like "heart healthy whole grains"

- some carbs are more quickly digested than others, like simple table sugar is fast, causing spikes in blood sugar, so eat slower digested carbs and you'll be OK (!?)

- fibre is technically a carbohydrate even though it is not digestible

So here are my thoughts on all of these:

The diabetes association doesn't go far enough on steering type 2 diabetics away from carbs. I think they just try to make like more "normal" for them by favouring drugs. Avoiding carbs actually leads to healthier food choices. I am now attracted to colourful foods and vegetables. If it is beige, like buns, bread, fries, onion rings, etc. I don't like it anymore.

Carbs are the cheapest thing to make, with a very long shelf life. How long can a box of cereal sit in your kitchen before it goes bad? Compare that to a tomato on the counter. Eating healthier lower carb things is healthier, but also more expensive.

Yes, white sugar is the worst for blood sugar spikes, but all carbs (except fibre) add to a long term rise. Eat enough slowly digested carbs and you have a spread out rise in blood sugar that just won't quickly go away.

Fibre is technically a carbohydrate even though it is not digestible. If it occurs naturally in a food it can slow down the digestion of other things, but adding fibre to something doesn't have a that effect. On a food label carbs are usually listed, subcategories of carb are often listed too, though often not a complete breakdown. So the sum of the subcategories doesn't usually add up to the total carbs. However if you take the total carbs and subtract out non-digestible fibre (technically a carb) you are left with net or digestible carbs of various types.

I personally avoid things that are more than 6 grams of net carbs per 100 grams of food, and that keeps my blood sugar under control without drugs.

Dear Bobbi: NO secrets. The keys:

1. Eat nutritiously. That means avoiding "the whites" -- starchy white potatoes, white rice, white flour, white bread, processed foods. Think -- sweet potatoes (high in fiber), brown rice, almond flour or another one you might prefer, whole foods -- fruits (moderation), veggies, limited breads -- whole grains if you do, beans and legumes.

2. Rest appropriate and get moving during the day -- even 5-10 minutes of exercise will make a difference in your blood sugars.

3. Meds as directed.

4. Keep a food diary and in that record your intake and corresponding blood sugar. That will help guide you what to eat (or not!)

5. Test, test, test your blood sugar.

6. Have you seen a diabetic educator? May help.

Thursday – FBS 75 @ 5 am. Had x-rays and no infection showed up, so no root canal yesterday. But now the face is looking like chippy chipmunk. DANG!!! Waiting to be able to call for an appointment today . . . again. *SIGH**

Had some chores to do after the Dentist, so got those done and early to bed for me!
