Since about March, I've pretty much stayed in my nutrient range on a daily basis. I wasn't tracking nutrients until then. When I first started tracking such things, I was SHOCKED! I'm amazed I'm in such good health, with the way I was eating! Tracking nutrients instead of calories was a real eye opener for me. Now I make sure I eat 5 fruits/veggies daily, and found that I have indeed tamed this lifetime sweet tooth of mine. Now that I know I'm staying in nutrient range, I'm starting to track sodium instead. Not as easy as nutrients was. emoticon

I didn't do well today. I had a strawberry blizzard today. I'm sure it had a million calories.

SUSIE,

I'm a chocolate and ice cream fiend. I don't keep ice cream in the house but I do have low cal chocolate that I eat on a daily basis and I count it in my nutrition tracker. You should take a look at my blog "make friends with your food". You may find some help there.

Been in my range more often than not.
Eating pretty good except:
Got to admit my biggest hurdle is chocolate&icecream.
Gotta give that up!
I never have denied myself of them. That will be my new goal.
Keep up the great job all. emoticon

Yes I am and I feel good today! I had 1 cup of plain oatmeal and a 1/2 grapefruit for breakfast. 2 servings of green tea and kale chips for my snack. I feel satisfied and not wanting anything that my body usually craves. So far so good. Gotta keep feeding my body good whole foods. I feel to good to quit now. Bad foods in my house are always easily accessible due to 4 kids and a junk food king for a husband. I have to keep resisting!!!

A few bad days, but all is not lost yet. Holidays mixed with death in the family last Saturday. Funeral is tomorrow, so hopefully an end to having unusual foods available is in sight. (The foods aren't unusual, but easy access is.)

If this was your last day, how would you spend it?

I am surprised as all get out to say I am within Nutrient Range today and feel awesome, I love walking and got in quite a bit today. Hope you all had a wonderful holiday. I did, had to work for a few hours tonight, but I love my job so all is well! :) I will be sad on the 30th when our show is over and I have to wait until Valentines day for regular work again, when Meat Loaf comes back for Rocktellz And Cocktails...Yup...it's a hard job but someone has to do it!

I should be withen goal today. I haven't logged dinner yet but mom and I are going out for dinner and I still have 1000 points to splurge.

LISA. I'm glad you are doing so good. Let's hope those measurements are down. I don't know about you but I love it when I lose inches. I do have a tape measure right by my bedside and I still never get around to measuring myself. emoticon

On the 19th I was under most of the nutrients, I have decided I really don't like beef, It just sits in my stomach and doesn't digest easily and tomorrow is supposed to be my weigh day, we had chuck roast for dinner. Oh and BONUS tomorrow! I have to wear a tux on New Years eve for a private party at Mandalay Bay and I get fitted in the morning. I am going to write down the measurements because I keep forgetting to buy a simple measuring tape. Lol!

Congratulations. I find that when I don't work out I try to stat at the low end of my range. When I do work out I try to stay at the upper side of my range. It seems to work well for me. I'm so happy for you. Doesn't it feel good to be on track.

I am within my range and surprisingly have been just about every day this week. I am trying to stay at the recommended calorie intake you see before you add fitness. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes I am walking a LOT further than I have in a long time and my body just screams "GIVE ME SOMETHING ELSE TO EAT!!!" So at those times I do. I was surprised that yesterday I stayed in my Nutrient Range even though I went to a dinner party. I was freaking out beforehand and doing a happy dance afterwards, lol!

VP. I don't know if I can do the hot water. Does room temp work. I'll give it a try. After I have a lemon tree.

Pam try having fresh squeezed lemon in hot water at night. I don't know why, but this takes away cravings for me at night. I had to get used to having it without sugar but now I can do it. Let me know if you try it and if it works for you.

Yes, surprisingly! I say this because I sometimes put eating on a back burner. Until yesterday I have been VERY aware of it for the past month, yesterday the day got away from me. I ate breakfast and a light lunch but since I worked 2 to 8 I didn't eat anything or drink any water in that time. By the time I was off I thought I could eat anything. I had a grilled Premium McWrap (with NO fries!) and then had a chayote squash with some homemade Greek Yogurt dip...it was very refreshing and satisfying, it also was within my nutrient range. :)

Yes! I am happy this morning. We have been snowed in for a week and yesterday I almost let my need for sunshine and being around people overwhelm my good sense. I wanted to go out to eat while I was running errands. Thank God I realized that my real needs were not for food and chose instead to go home and eat healthy leftovers for lunch. I really liked my spicy leftovers and I feel good about keeping within my calorie range. As a reward I am wearing a blouse this morning that I haven't been able to wear for several years. Yea! emoticon

MELISSA,
I find I do the same thing when I can't sleep which is often. I have some kind of disorder that confuses day and night so I want to be awake at night and asleep during the day. I try to sleep and snack all night. I have just recently started snacking on clementine oranges and different flavored Triscuits. I don't seem to eat as much because I don't allow myself anything on the crackers. I don't know why but it's working for me. I have also eaten almonds. They seem to fill me up and the added protein keeps me full. It's a day to day struggle. It's hard but emoticon Let me knows how it goes.

LISA,
I agree with you that it is a constant battle. I find that the two most important things are to keep my home well stocked with things I like that are good for me and to treat myself once a week with whatever I want. I go out with my mom every Friday night for dinner and I always have dessert. I look forward to it every week and it helps me stay on track.

I hope this helps both of you. Have a great weekend.

Sometimes but it is a constant struggle, I eat too much of one thing and not enough of another. It gets frustrating at times but I am still new to HONESTLY writing down what I eat. I went shopping today and except for ONE item I did REALLY good. I did buy some all natural (and it really is) dark chocolate almond butter...I wrote down what I ate but geez shouldn't have bought that it is addictive. But I have discovered slicing and freezing banana's that have gotten too ripe, it is my new ice cream.

No. Every day this week I've eaten way too many calories. Some days more than double the calorie goal. The reason is night time snacking. I generally stay on track all day, but I'm a night owl by nature and I often have insomnia on top of that and frequently stay awake way into the early hours of the morning. When I'm up late, I find myself in the kitchen. If you looked at my nutrition tracker, the overwhelming majority of my calories are in the "snack" category.

Tonight I have had a reasonable snack and I'm hoping I can stay out of the kitchen. I'm going to try to get some sleep soon, so I can wake up at a decent hour tomorrow. I have a lot to do.

AMY, your so welcome. I hope some of it works for you.

COOKIE, you gave some great advice. I go out once a week with my mom and we split a dessert after dinner. It gives me something to look forward to.

I know I'm over today. My muscles were cramping last night and I didn't get any rest until about 6 a.m. The problem is that when I can't sleep I snack on anything and everything.

Thank you both for your suggestions. I appreciate it. I especially appreciate that it took Pam 2 years to lose 100 pounds. I was putting pressure on myself to lose that much in a year, but it's already taking me longer. Like I said in my other post, I'm not on a diet, I'm learning how to live in a healthful way, so taking some extra time right now is okay with me so that I am successful long term.

My husband swings back and forth with me, one day he's suggesting weight loss surgery, which I personally refuse to do, other times he's imploring me to join him dining on his snacks. He's wishy-washy. He knows that I insist on losing weight on my own (no surgery) and that SparkPeople is important to me. He also knows my life style goals that I want to achieve as I grow older, which mostly includes being active and mobile on my feet, no meds or as few meds as possible, and I want to enjoy my life and not be house-bound. We both share those life-style ideals.

Cookie, thanks for your comments. I actually converted my family to a vegetarian diet based on the Engine 2 diet and the Forks over Knives documentary. I was really into it, as was my oldest child, but my husband really struggled. So then we agreed to red meat once per week, but really, he enjoys food. He doesn't smoke or drink, he eats. He needs to lose about 15 lbs which takes him about 2 wks to accomplish when he wants to. Leaving the room and setting up their own cupboard are great strategies. I will do that. I love water and drink it all the time so I'm good there too.

Thanks again Ladies! I truly appreciate it.
emoticon

Amy, I understand your struggle. Some people can eat all those things that DH craves and brings home without being overweight. But, that does not mean they are healthy food. His weight, good or bad, is his responsibility. The decisions he makes for himself are his right to make.

That said, he should make the decisions and carry them out in solitary. Does he support your weight loss? (Many men feel threatened.) If he does support it, he should quit sabotaging it, whether intentional or not. He may not even be aware of how his habits are affecting your efforts. So tell him, even if it is in a letter. Be kind, cause he may think "dieters are SO grumpy" and discard your thoughts.

NOW, to the truly important part, for both you and your husband. Your love for your children is not in doubt in any way. But, you are both responsible for their well being, and that means protecting their heart health and every other part of fitness while they are in your care. Even if they are underweight, fast food, fatty snacks, excessive sweets are not good for them...not now, and certainly not in the long term. You may not, (and possibly should not) be able to ban these things all the time. But maybe you can suggest (insist?) that each week there is one day that is a treat day. Perhaps as you get out the calendar, you check for birthdays. That birthday person can choose that as treat day, and decide if the celebration is cake/ice cream or a trip for fast food. Then another kid or your husband each choose one day of one of the weeks that are left, and decide what their treat day will include, whether pizza, going out, or a special sweet. That is not "dieter's grumpiness," that is responsible parenting. (Each week, all people enjoy the treat that another family member chose, unless they choose to 'opt out.')

As to DH/kids eating unhealthy food in front of you, simply leave the room. You cannot control anyone except yourself, but you do not need to watch their poor decisions. Emphasize emoticon your quest for health, not your displeasure with the contours of your body. You have to love yourself to win this battle.

AMY,

Out of sight out of mind. It's been proven that if you are at work and you have a candy dish and it's in a clear container a person is 70% more likely to eat it. If the candy is in a container that you can not see through your chances of indulging drops by 70%. Clean out a cupboard for all the sweets. Ask everyone for their support in keeping all their goodies there. Out of sight mind. Your urges will decrease. When one of the family eats whatever leave the room. These are things that I myself do. My DH is also a sweet-aholic and likes McDonalds. He asks me what I want and I usually tell him I have plenty here to eat. Sometimes I break down and get something. Usually I keep my house well stocked with food I like. I keep my belly filled with water so I'm less likely to eat due to thirst. These are the things I had to do to keep myself away from those sweets and greasy foods. I didn't get where I am over night. I had to learn tricks to aid me. It took me over two years to lose the 100 pounds. I'm hoping the tricks I thought myself will do others some help on their journey.

Oh Pam, if you only knew my food struggles! I have a hard time with sweets and portion control. My DH is VERY food oriented and brings lots of bad foods into the house, daily. He also likes to order out, often. I am a pretty good cook and he likes my cooking but he also likes his "junk." Uggh! Tonight he brought home my daughters dinner request from the store: frozen, battered fish, frozen French fries, frozen clam strips, ice cream and frozen pancakes and sausage for breakfast tomorrow. So, I had some frozen food for dinner and a large salad. But here is no other food in our house right now, tomorrow is my grocery shopping day. I had worked out hard for 50 min and was pretty hungry.

I'm trying to learn to separate myself from all that food. We are a family of 5, (3 kids), so we go through a lot of different eating preferences and a lot of food. I'm learning to say no to the chips, ice cream, cookies when everyone (I mean EVERYONE) is eating it around me. I'm realizing that they aren't going to change for me, I have to change for me.

I will get there, it's just taking me time, which it am okay with because this is a lifestyle change for me and not a diet. I'm here to stay, it's just taking longer than I would prefer.

FRANCEENAFTER, nice to see you join us and thanks for the encouragement.

I haven't added in my lunch yet but I'm having homemade turkey soup for dinner so I'm sure I'll be in ranges today.

COOKIE, try adding a couple hundred for the days you workout heavily. Add it to the bottom of the range, not the top. I know that today I worked out a lot for me 75 min. My range is 1600-1950. By the time I add in the 300 calories I burned I'll be shooting for 1900 which is still in my range. Sounds like your doing great.

AMY, It's harder to keep that fat under control when you have that taste food around the house. I still have TG leftovers (including pumpkin pie) and the sweet potatoes and stuffing call to me every day. I'm still eating them but my portions are getting are getting smaller. Thankfully the apple pie went faster. I know what's in the pie, I made it. I have gained two pounds since TG. I have to lose it again before Christmas because I know it will happen again then. The Turkey soup will help take care of that. emoticon

I am in the middle of a book about this very thing, sacrificing only for the scale and the almighty number. I like these updates, it shows you all are about making changes that last in your lives. That's what success is, you are all successful and inspiring. Thanks!

Pretty good, only 4 grams over in fat today, everything else is perfect. My sweet tooth is really acting up - it's like a battle in my head, hence the 4 grams over in fat.

Yes, that helps. I thought that you meant I had to consistently be in the range adjusted after the exercising. Now that I am aiming for the base calorie range, I am comfortable. I can easily be in the middle or even top of that. Just not after they adjust for calorie burn.)
Thanks

COOKIE, I personally don't give too much thought about the cal burned. 1200 is kind of low for just about anyone. When I work out really hard then I eat more carbs and protein and tend to stay at the top of my range and maybe over 100-200. As long as you are staying in your range you can worry about allowing for workouts once you are consistently in range.

Hope that helps.

OK, that went through. I will try again.
I am within my basic calorie range SP gave me....1200-1575. I am in range for carbs, protein, fat.
But, when SP adjusts for exercise, and adds 1000 to my range, I cannot increase my calories to match.
For 1 thing, they do not always recognize the type of activity, and I have to reclassify. My choices are not exact, and the choices vary widely, so I have no concept of what is accurate. I just know I am not eating 1000 extra calories at the end of my day when my workout is done.

In range today except I went 15 g over in fat. It was the leftover pecan pie that I was craving. It had 25 g fat per serving.

COOKIE AND OTHERS THAT ARE UNDER EATING AND/OR NOT MAKING CAL RANGE!!

**No one should be eating under 1200 cal. It slows your metabolism and slows down your weight loss.

Here is a great article that suggests high cal/high nutritional foods to bump up those cal in a healthy way.

My intention is to lose 1 pound per week. I am 66, and at my age, losing faster than that will make my face look haggard, I think. As it is, I find hollows and wrinkles because my skin is no longer elastic. I have lost quickly in the past, and regained just as quickly. I look at 1 pound of butter, and realize I have lost that much in a week..........not bad. Any week I do not gain is a good week, but yes, losses are better. Best is that I am eating healthier. "Back in the day" when I dieted, I just totaled my caloric intake....cake, cookies....just so it was under my limit...which was then 1000 calories. Who knew? Jelly was less calories than butter, so toast was spread with jelly....empty calories. Diet pop and artificial sweeteners were the norm. I no longer do either.

I had belonged to a diet club. No food for 24 hours before weigh in, then out to dinner with the group after weigh in. The scale was a god, and we were the sacrifices.

If this was your last day, how would you spend it?

Hi everyone! I have not been tracking well lately so I haven't been able to honestly say if I have been in range or not, however, due to always losing 1 lb a week (never more than 1 lb) I know I really need to focus on tracking regularly.

I was just scrolling through reading recent posts. Delana, if you stomach is happier now with less food that awesome!

Cookie, your weekly losses are similar to mine. I have been working out 60-90 min a day several times a week and I'm not losing more than a pound a week. Out of frustration I did some research on why I'm not losing more per week and I read that if I'm burning the same amt of calories that I'm eating in a day my body is going to go into starvation mode and start conserving.

I don't know if that's really my case, but your posts reminded me of myself a bit: exercising, eating pretty good, and a similar weekly weight loss as me.

COOKIE, there are plenty of high calorie items that are not empty sugary foods. There is a article on SparkPage that talks about it. I will look it up and let you know.

DELANA, sounds like you need a trip to the grocery store. I know it's really hard for me if I run out of healthy snacks. I know I get tired of fruit or vegetables all the time. I like healthy crackers with a bit of cheese or peanut butter.

I haven't had a chance to enter my recipes so I really don't know if I'm really over or under. I highly doubt I'm under.

This is for yesterday:
Did you stay within your nutritional goal today? I did not...I probably went over by 400 calories :( We had our Thanksgiving Luncheon at work, then after I put my baby to bed I started grazing out of boredom.
Yes? What did you do right?
No? What do you need to change for tomorrow? Today I need to occupy myself instead of aimlessly eating. I also need healthier snacks.

My range is adjusted as I exercise more, so it varies, but, yes, I am working on getting more calories. It is just at the end of the day, when the carbs, protein and fat allowances are met and I still have a calorie deficit, I am tempted to use high cal, low nutrition sugars to fill it, which seems counterproductive, especially when I am not hungry.

If this was your last day, how would you spend it?

Cookie,

You really should up your cals. Your body can not function on too little. 1400-1600 should be about right to lose weight properly and still keep your body healthy. I'm not trying to lose and I'm at 173 and my range is 1600-1900 range. Please consider eating a bit more. I love the fact that I can eat more. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me because I eat much more than I did when I was obese. I don't eat all the crap I used to emoticon
I believe I'm in range but it's hard to tell. I need to add the recipes I used so I can get my nutrition.

180 lbs. I walk and stationary bike, also added video this week...6 minutes so far. My range this past week was 1379 up to 17?? (don't remember.) I was below the range twice, but about 1450 to 1500 the other 5 days.
I am nearly always in my fat, carb, protein range.

Cookie, how much do you weigh? Are you exercising? 1200 is the rock bottom that should be consumed by anyone. If you are exercising then it's not enough to be building lean muscle mass. You may be losing some but you may be losing muscle instead of fat. Let me know.

I've been cooking all day. It's 10:30 and I just took the last meal out of the oven. Unfortunately when I cook I tend not to eat. I'm probably way under my nutritional ranges today. I need to do better tomorrow.

I am pretty good as to range of carbs and fats. Sometimes low on protein. Almost always low on cals, but lose 1/2 pound to 1 pound per week, so I don't think I will increase that. (I am usually between 1200 and 1400.)

Gracie, I often struggle with being a little low on protein too. I have found that light string cheese can give me a nice protein snack and is low-fat, low-carb too. I am craving hummus this week, that has some protein too.

Pam, thanks for the advice to freeze the bean meals. I don't know why I didn't think of that! emoticon

I am within my nutrient range today. I really should be nearly every day, so let this be the first of many days!

Pretty good about following the ranges. The site makes it so easy to track, why not take advantage? I do have some trouble with protein sometimes. I'll miss the minimum by a hair. I'll sometimes hover around the higher end of the fat range but it's rare I go over

AMY, it sounds like great thing to have for the week as only one meal. It is carb lay den but they are healthy carbs. Next time freeze half so you don't have to eat it for multiple meals. I've done that before with my quinoa. I ended up throwing half of it away. Make a chicken soup at the same time without beans, rice or noodles. That way you can have one for lunch and one for dinner and even out your nutrients.

I'm doing pretty good. I'm having the last of my quinoa tonight with butternut squash and chicken. I'm going to make a fresh batch of quinoa like I made the rice for my husband. It tasted really good but I just tasted.

Pam, that sounds so wonderful to have such nice family time. I love spending time with my family as well. I hope you enjoyed your Friday evening dinner last night! emoticon

I actually made a sweet potato chili with black beans (I try to eat vegetable based meals 50% of the time) that, when I entered it in my nutrition tracker, was surprisingly high in carbs. I had made a huge pot of it to also have for lunches so I had to keep eating it during the week and it interfered with my carb counts all week. It was all veggies, I never guessed it would have been so carb laden.

So, I've learned to figure out the nutrition facts before making a big pot. emoticon
