JSM,
Are you eating enough calories according to your nutrition tracker? What is the range and if you didn't eat the snickers where would your calories be? How much water do you drink? How much exercise do you burn on a typical day? Do you workout regularly? If you don't want to give me the answers here you can send me a mail. I will do my best to help you. Keep in mind I'm not a doctor and have no medical training. I have however lost just over 100 pounds. Also where are you falling in your other ranges. Carbs, fat, cal, protein etc. What are the ranges given to by the tracker and on a typical day where are you falling within that range.
Talk to you soon.
Pam

I'm struggling the most with hunger. I'm great at packing and eating healthy snacks and meals. But in between I am famished and it always leads to something quick and bad, yet filling. Like today's Snickers bar. I'm not hungry anymore, but I don't need the chemicals.

LM,
Your calories eaten are a bit low considering how much you exercise. Try upping them about 100 calories. The amount of water you drink is great but it will make your scale fluctuate depending on how much you exercised, what time of the month or day it is. When I was losing I noticed a pattern. I would stay the same for awhile. I would get ravenous one day and when I weighed myself the next morning I had dropped 2 pounds. You are probably in a bit of a starvation mode. With the amount of exercise you should try to stay closer to 1400. Add your calories so that you don't gain. You may gain initially as your body adjusts. No more than 1-2 pounds but it should come off right away. Try to bring down the carbs a bit and up the protein. You have to get the protein in order to get your body to work efficiently. Try it for a couple of weeks and let me know how you are doing. Your body probably has some type of pattern. Figuring it out can really be a challenge.

Keep in touch and I hope this helps.

How many calories does your nutritional tracker say you should eat? (Range)

1200 - 1550

How many calories do you consume?

1215 - 1350

Do you use your exercise tracker also?

Yep and I average out 60 minutes or more a day

How many calories do you burn?

200 to 600 calories a day depending on what I do

How is your sleep?

average 7 hours of sleep

How much water are you drinking?

8 to 10 or more water a day

What kind of calories are you eating? Carbs vs. protein vs sweets etc.

Carbs are in my normal range but high of all the things I take in. Proteins I am working on increasing. NO sweet except a little in my coffee.

Are you above, within or below in the other categories? Protein, fat, carbs etc.

Below in fats and folates

Anything else you want to know let me know. My exercise that I do range from lower core, zumba, cycling, treadmill, water fitness as well.

Thank you Pam!

I'll try the white noise and see if that helps. The Gravol did help knock me out and when I did awake... my thoughts were slowed so I fell back asleep.

LMALSBURY!

Your initial weight loss is normal when you start a new regime. I wouldn't expect that kind of weight loss each week. You mentioned that you track everything you eat but you didn't say if your above, within or below the nutritional guides. There could be several reasons for the stop in loss. I would need more information to help you figure it out. Here are some possible reasons.

Your body has gone into starvation mode: it is incredibly easy to trick your body into thinking your starving which will hinder your weight loss. I find that many people in the beginning think, myself included, that if I cut 500 calories and lose 2 lbs then if I cut 700 I'll lose 3. It doesn't work like that.

How many calories does your nutritional tracker say you should eat? (Range)
How many calories do you consume?
Do you use your exercise tracker also?
How many calories do you burn?
How is your sleep?
How much water are you drinking?
What kind of calories are you eating? Carbs vs. protein vs sweets etc.
Are you above, within or below in the other categories? Protein, fat, carbs etc.

These are all factors in weight loss. Also the scale is not the best to measure your progress.

If you don't want to put all this info in a post then Sparkmail it to me. I'm just a layman and can only help through my experience. I'm not a professional but I've yo-yo'd my whole life and have finally lost 100+ pounds and am keeping it off. I would love to help if I can.

MONICA,

I've always had severe sleep disorders. I've read all the pamphlets. If you haven't already read the article on Spark about sleep. I believe there are more than one. These are the things that have helped me the most.
Go to sleep the same time every night. I shut everything down at midnight each night.
I put a slightly noisy fan going on even in the winter just to hear the sound (white noise)
I have my IPad going on all night playing soothing sounds I downloaded from YouTube. (White noise) like falling rain or other repetitive sounds.

I've also tried reading before going to sleep which was also helpful but I haven't gotten around to getting another book.

I hope this helps.

My biggest struggle right now is to loose the weight. I have maintained my weight for 2 wks. I have been back on Sparks for about 3 maybe 4 and lost 8 pounds in the first 2/3 weeks now the last 2 wks I have maintained my weight. The difference from then to now is that I eat breakfast again (I always used to not eat in the morning). I did have a NSV this past week and that is fitting into a smaller size dress this weekend!! So maybe its my measurements? But I can not find my tape measure to check. So, could it be my body just adjusting to the extra calories I take in? I do different exercises most of the time with 2 Zumba work outs during the week. I track everything I eat and drink.

Getting enough sleep... my mind races with all kinds of thoughts. I've tried many things to help calm the mind and body but didn't help much with the racing thoughts.

Being sleep deprived... I'm struggling with keeping up with my exercises. Very behind on that. So tired.

EM,
You have a good man with good advice. I don't know if your a Christian but if not this is still good advice. Don't worry about the things you can not control.

1. I'm sure your family are coming to see you. Ay your age you should enjoy their company, let them fend for themselves. They are all adults. It sounds like you have raised them well. They are no longer your responsibility and do not need you to take care of them. It is their turn to take care of you. Enjoy their company and don't lift a finger. It's. Pleasure to take care of your parents. Don't take that away from them. Just enjoy. You deserve it.

2. Of course you are going to be concerned about your DH health no matter how minor it may be. Be concerned but again worry does not change anything and just adds to your stress and if your anything like me food tends to be our answer to stress.

3. What about SP has made your enthusiasm disappear? Are you trying to do to much? Has it become more of a chore than a help? It's meant to add to your life not hinder it.

I would not recommend stopping SP Altogether. The challenges are meant to be fun and help you reach your goals. If they are not fun right now then don't do them right now. I would keep the Fitness challenge just to encourage you to exercise. Maybe you could drop the monthly minutes since you are going to be busy with family. Maybe do some of the games and/or spend time on the ROLL CALL thread. We encourage and motivate each other. Most of us respond to everyone but that is not necessary. Most of us will pick and choose what we want to respond to especially when we are short on time. Just tell what is wrong and you will receive a lot of wise input, especially JUDY. She's good at that.

Let go and let God. Once you give him a problem, don't take it back. Most of us get tired of waiting on The Lord and take our problems back and don't give Him a chance to complete his job. All things come together for good to those that love The Lord. I'm sorry if I'm getting a little preachy. I really hope this helps and just remember you have done your job and you deserve to be pampered by your children. It's no longer your job to pamper them.

Thanks, Pam.

I wrote this all out and what it comes down to is this:

1. I've four sons, and a son-in-law plus a husband -- all strong people, married to strong women. They and their children will all be here for 12 days; first family will be here for 4 days before the rest, and the last family will be here for 4 days after the others leave. I'm excited, and nervous. I'm as prepared as I can be, but there's not much pre-planning I can do. We can sleep four families comfortably, so I'm concerned about the sleeping arrangements, and hoping two of the families will stay at a motel. Dh says they need to make that decision, not me, and he's right.

2. Dh had a chest xray that showed a dark spot on a rib. Also, his heart doctor said he will need a heart-valve replacement before the end of the year. The dark spot could be anything, and it doesn't really worry me, but . . . . The valve is easy to do, and that doesn't really worry me, either, but . . . .

3. I've lost my enthusiasm about SP, and am afraid that this stress will lead me to a binge that will undo a year's worth of work, and I will end up right back where I started--at 220 pounds.

Maybe I don't need to be enthusiastic about SP, but I know I need to keep the calories down, the exercise up, and the tracking going.

Should I quit the challenges? then join back in when everybody's gone? or would that just do me in?

I put off the stress article, and I think I will go read that right now.

Putting this all in print has taken a huge load off my mind already.

Thank you very much for your offer - you've been a big help!

8-)

EM,

Have you read the stress article listed in the Spring*Flowers challenge. Stress can do awful things to our self confidence. I'm not sure what you are referring to by "mojo". It can mean so many different things to different people. It sounds like maybe the concern might be the stress of so many people and their individual needs in such a short time. Take a few long deep breaths. Think about what you might be concerned with and we can tackle each one individually. Maybe you are a bit overwhelmed by the thought of it.

Let me know if you want me to help you dissect this with you. Or if I'm reading this completely wrong then please attempt to explain so I can on the right track with you.

I've lost my mojo -- The kids are coming on the 12, and I'm feeling a little stressed - 20 of us -- 10 adults, 10 kids -- two weeks - staggered, fortunately. I just can't seem to get back in the groove.

Pam,
Your words of encouragement and prayers here for others are so encouraging to me. I have a son who is dying of brain cancer - but, somehow, God has given me a peace that only He can give. I know that Greg will be cured - here on earth or when he goes Home! And that is such a comfort.

Thank you so much,

BRAKA012,

I don't know how to advise you or help with a bad marriage. We just started a prayer thread. I would encourage you to submit this there so others can pray for your situation. I have been there and it drains all your strength and self confidence.

My Mother is also my beast friend. Losing my Father was a heartbreaking trial in my life. He died of a terrible painful cancer over 8 years ago. I still miss him a lot and occasionally cry. My Mother is getting on in years and I don't know how much longer I will be able to have her here with me. I can't imagine what you are going through.

Dear east Heavenly Father, please help BRAKS012 deal with the loss of her Mother. Wrap your loving arms around her and and ease her mind and heart. Cancer is an awful painful disease and it leaves those of us behind with such sorrow. I know it was time to take her home dear Lord but it leaves us in such pain. Help her to deal with this pain. Help uplift her spirit and give her the strength she needs during this trial. Help her to remember the happy times she spent with her Mother. Help her dwell on the good rather than the loss. We know her mother is in a better place without pain. Help us to remember that. Help us not to dwell on our loss but on her glory.

And Lord she is in a terrible marriage dear Lord. You know what is best for her. Speak to her Lord. Tell her what to do. I know Lord that you do not want your children to suffer. I don't know the answers dear Lord, but I know you do. Many times we go through these trials because of our disobedience to you Lord, but please dear Lord ease her pain and her loneliness. Please better her marriage or give her the strength to do whatever she needs to do. Guide her and help her to do your will Lord whatever that may be. Again Lord I ask that you speak to her and I pray that she is ready to hear your words. I ask all these in you heavenly name, Amen

I hope all goes better for you. Feel to contact me if you wish. I'm always available.

Pam. emoticon

To all those praying for my Mother. We went to see the surgeon today. The good news is that it is called basil cell and does not metastasize. The bad news is that the spot will continue to get larger and deeper if left unchecked. It has roots that dig down. It's on her temple and they are concerned about the blood vessels and nerves. They think that it is in the muscle and maybe the nerves. The surgery will probably take all day and the spot is too large to just be closed. She will need to see a plastic surgeon to close it up

She has 4 more spots on her face. They don't want to deal with them until after the surgery because they are small and she is in no danger.

Thank you all for your prayers. It has been very comforting.

IMPORTANT

Please pray for my Mother. We just found out that she has a large spot of cancer on her face. Granted it is usually not threatening but I know the spot is the size of a half dollar and it is deep. I also know she has several smaller spots on her face and I believe she has spots on her arms and I don't know if there are any other spots on her body. I'm scared. Mom is 85 years old and I don't know how well she can withstand evasive treatment. emoticon

Fancy,
This sounds excellent. I started with 10 minutes a day 3 days a week. In about a week I was doing 30 min 7 days and then 60 min/day.

Nothing is too small to start with. Once you really start doing it regularly you start wanting to exercise and really miss it when you don't. I have never exercised before and was really surprised when I started to enjoy it. Now I just exercise whatever I want but since I belong to the challenge that Joette was talking about I try to average 60 min a day. Sometimes only 25 min sometimes much more. My trick is to find things I really like, I like Wii fit. My other goal is to get rid of my chicken fat. Go you chicken fat Go. emoticon

Between the challenge, fat goal, and fun I stay pretty motivated. If you need motivation along the way, just come back here or you can use the Roll Call and/or Chat thread. I'm so glad you joined us. I'm sure you will have an excellent time. emoticon

Fancy - suggestion for keeping the motivation going.. Stick to that 10 minutes a day that is working for you. Get a paper calendar that shows the whole month. Just keep that streak going. Spark people started in the first place as a one person 10 minutes a day streak!!

Think of having everything you do here in your program becoming life-long habits. I believe just that thought has changed my thinking enough to actually move into maintenance that will last the rest of my life instead of just one week.

Yes, I was a big time YoYo Dieter.

Good luck!!

I am new to this team. I am 56 years old, and not very fit. I struggle with portion control. Exercise is a problem also. I have started out slow doing just 10 min. a day for now I seem to have a problem with staying motivated. I do ok thru the week, but not so good on weekends.
I think this is a team that may keep me motivated.

Destiny,

Don't do this alone. God gave us the tools to help us through this terrible addiction. My mother is also trying to quit under a doctors care. 75% of the addiction is not only the nicotine but the need to hold the cigarette. That is why most things to help us quit. The most effective method, according to the doctor, is a medicine that comes in the form of a cigarette. You hold it between your fingers and you also smoke. It allows you to slow down and stop slowly and permanently. The success rate is extremely high.

Just remember that The Lord works through others also. He often works through doctors. Please don't take the hard way when their are good options out there. Please talk to your doctor about this option I described.

Dearest Heavenly Father please help this young lady to overcome her terrible addiction. Help her to seek the help she needs. Make her strong when she feels weak. Her body is your temple Dear Lord. Help her to honor her body in the way that you deem appropriate. Wrap your loving arms around and keep her warm in your glory. Ease her mind and bless her body with the ease of her addiction. I ask for all these things in your heavenly name, Amen.

I know the challenge of quitting smoking well. This will be the best gift you can give yourself.

After that, giving yourself healthy food will start the journey of bring back your body to what it is meant to be. Colorful fruits a veggies have the anti-oxidants your body needs to get all the stuff out that you've been putting in with each cigarette.

Stay strong. It took me a year with nicorette gum, about 30 years ago.

I completely believe in the power of prayer. I also believe when one or more come in His name miracles can happen. I am still smoking but Ive given myself this month to get it together. I will be smoke free in August!

Please do keep me informed. I'm always interested in our other team members. I'm thinking of starting a prayer request thread for those that need the word of God and just need to know there is someone out there who wants to help.

What do you think about that kind of thread?

Talk to you soon. Bye for now. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Destinee,

I am not a smoker myself but I was a cocaine freebaser. There are several ways to get a grip on what is going on in your body but I'm sure you've heard it a million times before. My husband (boyfriend at the time) asked me how much money I spent on the drug. I showed him. In my case it was several hundred dollars. I'm sure you do not spend that much money but I'm sure it is substantial. Anyway he said "Give the money to me". I did and we went clothes shopping. When we got home he spread everything out on my bed. He said there is your money, where is the money you smoked up. It was really amazing. I stopped that day and I had previously tried to stop several times before.

Now I know that the money you spent is significantly lower than the money I spent but if you take 6 months of the money you spent on cigarettes I'm sure it would be a lot. Go shopping and lay it out. I say to you Where is the money you smoked away. Each time you wear one of your new outfits you will remember why you have it.

Also my Mother is 85 years and still smokes. She says she wants to give it up but she constantly tries to do it alone. It sounds like you are doing the same thing. My understanding is that the patches are not the best alternative. Part of the addiction is the need to constantly hold something between your fingers. There is an alternative that is a holder that reduces you down slowly. From what I understand the success rate for this is extremely high. Go see your doctor and get the help you need. My Mom does not to except the help because for some reason she thinks it makes her less of a person. I hope you do not have the same feelings.

Please go see your doctor. I hope I have been of some help.

Dearest Heavenly Father, Destinee is having a terrible time giving up a dangerous habit. Help her Lord. Take the urges for this drug away. Help her to not put herself in the position that gives her the urge. Help her to accept the help that is available to her. Speak to her heart and mind Dear Lord. Wrap your loving arms around her Lord and keep her safe. Please Lord keep the freshness of her breath and the clearness of her lungs be a motivation to her. I do not know exactly what she is going through, but you do Lord. You know her wants and her needs Lord. Just help her succeed in her need Lord. I ask all these things in your heavenly name, Amen.

I hope this is helpful.
Pam

I am struggling with quitting smoking. I've tried to stop like four times this year. ill stop for a few days and then I'm back to it. I registered for my first 5K in October, so its crunch time. I'm gonna buy some gum to day and use the patches, wish me luck!

SHAREBEAR1963 - thanks for the encouragement!~ :) I think of my workouts as "me time" too, it's one of the happiest moments of my day, when I'm working out on the Arc Trainer or the Elliptical and breaking a sweat and listening to upbeat music, and I am not worrying about anything.

As far as the eating goes, I'm not perfect at all, I actually went about 520 calories OVER today, bummer :( but what I do is buy healthy food and snacks and I avoid buying "trigger foods" - for me that means any chocolate that comes in bags (like Halloween candy) because I will NOT stop at one piece. I also won't buy chips-and-dip anymore, because I overeat. I look at calories when I go shopping, and also fiber content, for cereals, if it has less than 5g of fiber, I don't buy it.

I use a tracker on my phone, "Lose It" app, and I try to enter the calories of what I'm eating BEFORE it goes in my mouth, and if it's going to make me go over, I find something else to eat with fewer calories. It also helps to enter it before I eat it, because I forget what I ate sometimes, like today, I forgot to enter the egg whites for my omelette (just fixed it, though) and it was a 50 calorie difference. I don't do this tracking 100%, like today was super busy and I was stressed out and ended up overeating, but I try to be pretty consistent with it. The nice thing is that you can scan barcodes and the nutritional information automatically goes in the tracker and then the foods are saved in your database so if you eat the same things a lot you don't have to re-enter it (for me that means a lot of egg white omelettes).

Good luck - if you ever need anything, holla~

Stephanie

I seem to keep getting the munchies and I lack will power to snack sensibly.

I am great with my workouts, but I am really struggling with the clean eating.

Skribblez,

DO NOT BEAT YOURSELF UP!!!

I like to think of my workouts as "me time". Schedule it like a priority and just do it. NOW, IF IT COULD BE THAT SIMPLE FOR ME WITH MY EATING.

I'm struggling with the same thing I've always struggled with - being an "AON girl" - all or nothing girl - if I mess up, I get depressed and hate myself, and it throws me into a binge. If I am not getting completely obsessive and crazy with my dieting/exercising, I'm not doing a good enough job. But the drawback is I get burnt out really easy when I do that. I'm trying to find some balance and tell myself I can't skip more than 2 days in a row, but I can take skip days, and I can eat what I want sometimes, just not like going to the buffet or something, but then I feel so much guilt and self-hatred about it that I can't hardly stand it.

EG8383 - Elsa, I can totally relate - I have been on this binge for like a month because I had no motivation to go to the gym or eat healthy, because it was so much easier (because I'm lazy) to eat what my boyfriend was cooking and spend time with him curled up in front of the TV than to get off my butt, and tell him "see ya in an hour or two, buddy". I hear ya when you say "I just need to do it but I can't get myself to do it." - I feel like that all the time. I read something somwehere that said "If I work out today, how will I feel? If I do NOT workout today, how will I feel? How would I rather feel?" and that cheating on your goals is like cheating on yourself.

Ginger, is it the food tracker here that is a stumbling block? Would simple pen and paper be easier? It wouldn't give you all the numbers the tracker does, but seeing a piece of chocolate cake on your paper may make you think twice about the candy bar or ice cream later. I could be a good babystep to getting into the tracker.

I haven't tracked my food for months... And the scale is showing it. I tend to forget about one thing I may have eaten and then have something else I shouldn't... Maybe I need to get a simple piece of paper and pen going for myself too! :)

Thank you for the note. I do peruse the posts occasionally but have not posted.

Last month i took my son to the We Care Clinic because of headaches - we thought stress-related or migraines. He continued to get worse, so we went to an internist a couple of weeks ago. After tests, multiple tumors were found in his brain. He has had surgery to remove what they can - however, they are not able to remove all. So now we are looking at radiation and chemo - if he wants to do the treatment. Without treatment, the doctors give him about 3 months. So, now he is processing all of this. He is now staying with me and his brother is a small 2 bedroom apartment -

We really are doing ok - only because of a loving God who is carrying my family right now.

Elsa, take baby steps. Instead of committing to everyday, try for a couple days a week. Get a pencil and paper type system you can track with too. A simple inexpensive calendar is what I use. Put down the weeks goal, maybe even chose the DVD and put it on the calendar. Maybe reward yourself with a sticker or sparkgoodie for the days you stick to your plan

Hi everyone. I'm really struggling with finding time, energy, and motivation to get exercise in daily. I don't mean like a walk I mean like a real workout. I love dvd's and have many to choose from but man I'm being such a lazy butt!! When I was pregnant I was committed to eating really well so I could control my gestational diabetes without meds and now that I have no one relying on me I eat like a garbage disposal =( I'm sad because I know it's mainly laziness. I just need to do it but can't get myself to. Any ideas?!

Thanks,
Elsa

Take it in baby steps. I despised strength training... Finally had an ah ha moment in September... Anything is better than nothing. I do "something" everyday. I started at wall push-ups. Am up to doing full floor ones now. I saw amazing results very quickly. I spent between 1-5 minutes a day... Everyday. No excuses. I keep a calendar of what I have done, so I don't repeat body parts to often. It doubled as a motivator to not miss a day.

When I started I did modified planks in the rotation (about once every 5-6 days). It didn't take long and I was able to do full planks. I can hold them for a full minute now!.. And added bonus, I can do each side plank too!

Do I have a six pack, absolutely not. Am I stronger than I was... Yep!

I keep struggling with getting my strength work outs in. If it wasnt for being able to walk on lunch I wouldnt do anything and I am paying for a trainer. Ugh. I just get so exhausted at night fighting with my fussy 16 month old. By the time he goes to bed I am ready for bed. Plus I am just too tired to get up at 4 am and do it. How do I get the motivation to work out? Do I just suck it up and do and hopefully Ill have the time to do it?

Thanks Heather. Still have not gotten the Ninja out - have had a bit of a "situation" here in my family that needed my time and attention. And of course, that got me off track with my eating. But, my focus right now is drinking more water and that I am doing!!

No, I make protein shakes with a scoop of protein powder I use zero carb vanilla isopure, one scoop about 4oz of water and 2 ice cubes with a tablespoon of peanut butter or to taste, and blend it all up! The nutritional store I buy all of my stuff at also has sugar free calorie free flavoring syrup I add to my protein shakes too that way I can keep the calories low. Pinterest also has great protein bar recipes and stuff for your sweet tooth :] sorry for the confusion!

Heather,
Peanut butter is the #1 food on my favorites list. You mentioned ice and peanut butter. Just in a blender?? And you mentioned cinnamon.
Thanks,
barb

i have a Ninja but have never used it. Am planning to make a space on my counter for it - and start making smoothies. Just need some good ideas.

For cravings - what helps me be successful, knowing I am a night time snacker, I budget 200-300 calories into my day to allow for the snack.

Gym buddy - if they don't have a buddy wall, maybe you could volunteer to get something going.

Another idea -
Www.meetup.com
This site brings real life back to social. As an example, I am the organizer for a walking group there. If you can think it, they probably have a group doing it.

Joette, that was a great idea, I never thought of it to look..I will check it out when I go next time, I have two gym memberships because my trainer trains at one gym and I go to spin at another and the other is open 24/7 so I can go at my own convenience, I will have to look! And as far as sweets, there are alternatives to everything, try munching on some fruits, raspberries I find to satisfy my sweet tooth, I usually mix it with cottage cheese. Or damyhealth.com has good recipes for guiltless sweets, I make whipped cream by using coconut milk. However you should allow yourself what you're craving just have the discipline to know when to cut yourself off. I make protein shakes with ice and peanut butter and mix in cinnamon and whatever else I feel would crave a sweet tooth, there are millions of things out there dear you just have to find what works for you! Good luck :]
