Elsa, take baby steps. Instead of committing to everyday, try for a couple days a week. Get a pencil and paper type system you can track with too. A simple inexpensive calendar is what I use. Put down the weeks goal, maybe even chose the DVD and put it on the calendar. Maybe reward yourself with a sticker or sparkgoodie for the days you stick to your plan

Hi everyone. I'm really struggling with finding time, energy, and motivation to get exercise in daily. I don't mean like a walk I mean like a real workout. I love dvd's and have many to choose from but man I'm being such a lazy butt!! When I was pregnant I was committed to eating really well so I could control my gestational diabetes without meds and now that I have no one relying on me I eat like a garbage disposal =( I'm sad because I know it's mainly laziness. I just need to do it but can't get myself to. Any ideas?!
Thanks, Elsa

Take it in baby steps. I despised strength training... Finally had an ah ha moment in September... Anything is better than nothing. I do "something" everyday. I started at wall push-ups. Am up to doing full floor ones now. I saw amazing results very quickly. I spent between 1-5 minutes a day... Everyday. No excuses. I keep a calendar of what I have done, so I don't repeat body parts to often. It doubled as a motivator to not miss a day.
When I started I did modified planks in the rotation (about once every 5-6 days). It didn't take long and I was able to do full planks. I can hold them for a full minute now!.. And added bonus, I can do each side plank too!
Do I have a six pack, absolutely not. Am I stronger than I was... Yep!

I keep struggling with getting my strength work outs in. If it wasnt for being able to walk on lunch I wouldnt do anything and I am paying for a trainer. Ugh. I just get so exhausted at night fighting with my fussy 16 month old. By the time he goes to bed I am ready for bed. Plus I am just too tired to get up at 4 am and do it. How do I get the motivation to work out? Do I just suck it up and do and hopefully Ill have the time to do it?

Thanks Heather. Still have not gotten the Ninja out - have had a bit of a "situation" here in my family that needed my time and attention. And of course, that got me off track with my eating. But, my focus right now is drinking more water and that I am doing!!

No, I make protein shakes with a scoop of protein powder I use zero carb vanilla isopure, one scoop about 4oz of water and 2 ice cubes with a tablespoon of peanut butter or to taste, and blend it all up! The nutritional store I buy all of my stuff at also has sugar free calorie free flavoring syrup I add to my protein shakes too that way I can keep the calories low. Pinterest also has great protein bar recipes and stuff for your sweet tooth :] sorry for the confusion!

Heather, Peanut butter is the #1 food on my favorites list. You mentioned ice and peanut butter. Just in a blender?? And you mentioned cinnamon. Thanks, barb
i have a Ninja but have never used it. Am planning to make a space on my counter for it - and start making smoothies. Just need some good ideas.

For cravings - what helps me be successful, knowing I am a night time snacker, I budget 200-300 calories into my day to allow for the snack.
Gym buddy - if they don't have a buddy wall, maybe you could volunteer to get something going.
Another idea - Www.meetup.com This site brings real life back to social. As an example, I am the organizer for a walking group there. If you can think it, they probably have a group doing it.

Joette, that was a great idea, I never thought of it to look..I will check it out when I go next time, I have two gym memberships because my trainer trains at one gym and I go to spin at another and the other is open 24/7 so I can go at my own convenience, I will have to look! And as far as sweets, there are alternatives to everything, try munching on some fruits, raspberries I find to satisfy my sweet tooth, I usually mix it with cottage cheese. Or damyhealth.com has good recipes for guiltless sweets, I make whipped cream by using coconut milk. However you should allow yourself what you're craving just have the discipline to know when to cut yourself off. I make protein shakes with ice and peanut butter and mix in cinnamon and whatever else I feel would crave a sweet tooth, there are millions of things out there dear you just have to find what works for you! Good luck :]

I'm struggling with cravings. When do you fulfill them and when do you hang tough? If I always say no, I eventually find myself binging on it. Also, being a girl, that time of the month is rough. What do you do to get through it successfully?

Heather, does your gym have a board that people can post that they are looking for exercise buddies?
Would it help if you knew you had a spark buddy that was exercising at the same time?

I'm currently struggling with exercise, I have social anxiety so it's difficult for me to just get up and go, I started running before work around my neighborhood but I found myself slacking off because I felt weird about people watching me. I am fine when I have a workout partner but I find myself to be too self conscious to do anything alone. I love going to spin at my gym but I get stuck when it comes time to leaving, I wish I had someone close by to keep me company and keep me distracted from all of this, not to mention my personal trainer reschedules on me too often for my liking.

Serenity,
Dear Lord please bless Serenity and her husband. Send them your healing grace. Wrap your loving arms around them and keep them safe. Lift their hearts and minds and protect them from such a scary time. Ease their minds Lord. Take away their stress and if it be your will Lord make her husband healthy and whole. Bless them. I ask this in your blessed name, Amen.

What I am struggling with has to do more with stress rather then anything with Sparkpeople :D My husband went in for his endoscopy Thursday hoping to be able to burn more of his Barrett's however, that was not the case :( They found a new stricture, which the doctor does not like too much, and two more nodules where his previous cancer was. So now we are waiting for the results of the biopsies and I am trying to keep it under control because I know he is stressing and needs a rock right now. I am hoping by next week we will have good news and we can all breath easier. Sorry had to get it off my chest :)

WooHoo! You know what your holdback was. Knowledge is power. Knowing that, you will be able to fight back. :)
We did a "mind over body" series a while back, if you are interested, we can redo it. To check it out its in the challenges and tracking forum. You may have to scroll back a few pages to get to it. It was about this time last year we did it. There are about 12-15 posts. They all start with "mind over body" as the first part of the title.

Joette, You are very inspiring to me. Again I was not able to work out at all. Translation: I found other things that I "needed" to do. They still are not done because the TV got in the way. Oh we'll tomorrow is another day. I need to cook tomorrow so I have food to eat next week. The one thing I have learned is that if I don't take time to cook then I won't stay on track. I have to find something similar for my exercising. Something proactive so I don't have to think about it I just need to follow what is already set in place.
Talk to you soon, have a fantastic weekend

Baby steps are amazing. Don't discredit them.
I have a real hard problem with strength training. Last fall I was approaching my day 365 on my exercise streak. Almost never did this include strength training. Bike, walk, hula hoop, trampoline.. Fun stuff. Five days before that anniversary date, it hit me.. Strength training doesn't have to be a brutal workout. I added a new piece to my habits: strength training: everyday - do something! Started out with easy things like wall push-ups one day, 10 crunches the next... I do use the calendar idea for my strength training. It helps me remember what I have worked on so I don't overdo muscle groups. In just 1-5 minutes a day since September I have reached huge milestones. I still only do a couple minutes each day, but I can do 100 modified push-ups and am working toward doing 100 full (up to about 28). I have missed one day in my strength training since sept 5, 2012. Yes, there have been a few days where I had to exercise my willpower muscle and get out of bed to do my strength training exercise.

Thanks Joette, I will give it a try. The problem is when I do just a bit to do something it's kind of disheartening to read how great everyone else is doing. I don't seem to read about anyone else who is struggling. Everyone else I read about talks about hours doing various things. It would be nice to hear about someone else who does little like me. I guess I'm just feeling sorry for myself. I got to stop this.

Try getting a calendar to use as a journal. Make it simple. A simple smilie face or quick note what you did each day. Make a committment to just a few minutes a day, even 10. See if that helps.
Seeing it written out may be a good motivator. It was for me!

I have been stressed the past few weeks because of a number of projects due at work and that has made me exhausted...I don't think I'm getting good sleep, particularly since I have been waking up with headaches, and historically that means I'm clenching my teeth in my sleep, which I haven't done since law school.
I'm in season for rugby so I'm getting 3-5 hrs a week of fitness in with practice and matches - and I'm trying to get in some additional fitness (really happy that the weather has finally turned so outdoor runs can be more regular!) and think I'm eating pretty well...just been stuck on this plateau since January fluctuating between 204 and 208 - mostly at 207 so I'm definitely feeling some frustration there, but I'm overall really happy with my progress and where I am now.

Kathy391, What are you tired of? Is it physical, tired of your change? It matters what your talking about. Let me know. Thanks. Pam
Walden9 I had the same trouble and at times during my journey I repeat this problem. I try putting my sweets where I don't see it and make it more difficult For instance I put them in a room across the house in a closet. If I'm at a period where that doesn't work then I stop buying them. I can't go cold turkey. I still go out to dinner once a week and that's when I let myself splurge. I eat dessert with lots of gooey chocolate. I only do this once a week. It will slow down my weight but I will binge if I don't let myself this outlet. Also make sure you have natural sweets in sights, fruit you like. Natural sweets. I also keep attune chocolate bars in the fridge (only 80 cals) and allow myself 1 a day. I also keep Nugo bars (190 cals) no quite handy and one a day. They have other flavors if chocolate is not your thing. I hope this helps.
Haiku at, I have lost 185 lbs so far. Once you begin give yourself a day to splurge. It slows down your weight lose but it gives you something to look forward to and it makes it easier for me to enjoy my new lifestyle. I go out to dinner with my Mom once a week and I eat anything I want including dessert. The challenges work for me. I had come to a stand still and once I worked the the challenges I have dropped 4 additional lbs. Good luck!

Actually everything lately. Well mostly eating whatever I want and lack of exercise. I have been "off" for months and months and I keep trying to come back and make it stick (as I know what works) and I still fail! I think I will check out some of the challenges and see if that gets me going on the right track again - as I feel so much better when I am healthy!

I eat because I can't seem to go to sleep until I do. I'm never hungry. I just think its a habit that I need to break and I do want something sweet. I chocolate health bars that I really like and if I'm craving I eat one of those.
These are all wonderful suggestions and I will try some of them. Thanks for your help. So far I have stopped eating multiple cookies and multiple snacks until I fall asleep. I eat only one snack and I try to stay away from chocolate. In 2 nights I have lost 2 lbs (I haven't logged logged one yet).

I too struggle with night-time eating and it is normally junk food also. How about snacking on air popped popcorn with a little butter spray and butter salt or mandarin oranges or fresh fruit or some homemade soup, boiled eggs? Are you eating because you are hungry or because of the munchies? If you are eating because you are used to having something sweet (like myself) I would try the fresh fruit and maybe a cup of milk.

I have a coworker that swears by rice cakes with a bit of peanut butter and Nutella. Says its like eating Reese's PB cups. I haven't tried it.
I love PB and fruit on a slice of toast, tortilla, etc though. Skip the jelly and use whatever fruit you like.

I am really trying to stop eating in the middle of the night. I missed the mark again last night. I would be happy if I ate something healthy and low cal but I always eat junk. I will try again tonight. I was told to eat celery with a bit of PBS. I need to buy some celery. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Welcome to SparkPeople and our team PAM, I am happy you have joined our team.
Your night time snacking sounds like it might be helped with a piece of paper hanging in your kitchen... Maybe instead of tracking what you eat, put this on it: is this worth the HOUR I need to spend exercising? ;)
Pam. It sounds like you have done fantastic on your healthy lifestyle journey... Those ups and downs are part of the path. Keep focused on the good habits, don't beat yourself up (too badly) for the slips.
I am finding myself slipping in my food too. My weight ticker is gong the wrong way. I have maintained exercise, mostly good food choices... Where I am struggling is portions and tracking. I these in January when I started a new full time job.

Hi, my name is Pam. I just joined this website. I need to be held accountable. I lost 85+ lbs but now I have come to a complete standstill. I have gotten to a very bad habit of waking up at night and eating something really bad for me. I have also stopped cooking ahead so I snack on a cookie or candy. I still manage to stay under my cal count but I know I'm not eating well. Please help

Catlady. I went through that stage. Make sure you have plenty of fruits and vegetables right at hand. I keep all junk food put away out of the kitchen. Hang a piece of paper up in the kitchen and make sure you write everything you eat as you eat it. It will help you to realize how much you are eating at that time. Try to have your lunch made ahead. I know if I don't have my lunch prepared ahead of time I will fill my self up with bad choices which does not keep me full and then I tend to eat more because I feel bad about what I did to myself and then I eat more. The goal is to break the negative habit. I hope this helps. Let me know how you are doing.

Catladyx8, you are not alone. I too am struggling with over eating, apparently I have been doing it too long that my body is asking where the rest of the food is. Have you tried chewing sugarless gum to help with the munchies? I am looking for some alternatives to stop the crazy amount of eating. I tried drinking more water first since our bodies may seem hungry but is really just thirsty. It is helping me to keep a food log since (1) I have to log everything I eat in and (2) I have to see all the numbers adding up. My worst time is at night, I have a horrible sweet tooth and that is my "alone and enjoy myself time".

Walden - creating a plan, and knowing it may need to be modified, reworked or totally changed at any time is an important part of this journey. Being mindful of what you eat and why help create power... The more you learn about your habits and nutrition the more powerful you become.
So my suggestion to you would be to start with one shake, and regular meals. If that doesn't give you the realistic results you are looking for... Try two. Keeping focused on paying attention to your body and how it responds to what you are doing.

Cat - have you tried a "lunchbox diet"? Pack your foods to reach your calorie goal in a lunchbox. Eat only what you have packed.
Walden - I personally wouldn't do the shakes. If they are something you normally enjoy, by all means work them in to your meal plan. The trick is that we are on a lifestyle journey, not a diet. Will you eat that way forever?

what I am struggling with is not knowing if I should have 2 protein shakes a day and a regular meal and if I decide to do that would it be a good way to lose weight along with exercising at the gym 5-6 days a week.

I need some help! I am strugglginw ith over-eating at my lunch meal. I eat a well balanced meal but then I just start eating all sorts fo other stuff. I call it a binge. For some reason I just want to eat and it doesn't' matter what it is as long as it is good. I can consume a lot of food that I don't need to be eating. I just can't help myself. At the time I am doing ti I don't realize what I am doing and once I stop eating it hits me. Then I feel bad about doing it, but stopping it is the problem. I do have some tools in my weight loss kit to help me deal with this sort of thing but at the time I don't think to use those approaches. All I can think about is eating. Does anyone have some suggestions to help me stop this over-eating???

HI everyone, Happy St. Pattys day. Have had a couple of bad days, not with eating so much, but just with my self. Crabby, down, and not doing my weekly trackers like I wanted to. Too much stress. But already determined to pick my self up of the floor and shake it off. today is a new day and you never know what is around the corner!! Really need to get into the exercise mode, but its hard when the temps won't move past 30. and snow is in the forecast every day. Would like to get in shape some, before gardening season. If now, I will be hurting.
Time for breakfast! Good day everyone!

Kathy, exercise! :) increases serotonin which is the feel good stuff in your body. It doesn't have to be rigorous either. Get out and walk.
Let me know if it helps...
Vitamin B complex is amazing too. That's what helps in our house.

A-New Tara, Thank you for your response to my post. I do have trouble eating enough calories every day. I am adding various things to my routine weekly, changing it up a litte. I am not really limited in what I can do. I am pretty active, I just take anti-rejection medicine and other medicines that seem to cause other issues. I am dealing with it one day at a time. I enjoy exercise, it makes me feel really great.
I work at a university and prior to my neck surgery I walked on campus all of the time. Of course, after I was off six weeks with my neck I came back to work for 8 days and while running an errand, I took the steps down instead of waiting on the elevator and I missed a step and fractured my ankle, off another four weeks. I am gradually getting back to that.
I do strength train three days a week, I may increase the reps, maybe that will kick start something.
Thanks for your reply and I will try playing with my calorie range and see what happens. Sandy

Paula, I am happy you are part of our team. :) I have a couple suggestions for you. :)
Have you tried the "limited mobility" center here on SparkPeople?
SparkPeople recently changed their headers. To get to this link choose: articles and videos (orange bar at top of page) - choose lifestyle centers - then limited mobility.
The other suggestion I have for you... Last summer/fall this team did a series challenge that lasted about ten weeks. Each segment was put on its own new thread. It was titled: Mind over Body. I think working through those series of articles might be very helpful to you.
There may be others interested in the mind over body too. If you are, speak up. We could redo that series. I would gladly repost them and get new discussion going on them. If you would like to peek at them, you can find them in the "challenges and tracking" forum. They are a page or two (3-4) back.

Howdy! from the DFW area of Texas!
I've been a member of this team for a few months now and have kept up with all of the ideas and suggestions and successes that all of you have been having. I am definitely struggling on losing back the 24 lb gain from a new medicine that I was tried on for my leg tremors. I am disabled and seem to "wiggle" most of the time. The main side effect of the medicine was weight gain and depression. I had both. My doctor started me on the stuff in Oct. 2012 and took me back off of it Dec. 31, 2012 and by then I gained 24 lbs up from my first goal (of weighing 150 lbs) the doctors had set for me. I have lost a few of them back down, but it seems that with the depression that came along with it, it "reset my mind" and now all of my thinking and "plans" have gone awry. I need to get back down to the weight of 150 lbs, but I'm stuck. I'm not giving up, I've come too far in my 4 year journey to turn back now. It is truly amazing what medicines can do. She put me back on my regular medicine that I had been on for numerous years and I'm feeling definitely better in mind and body, but I'm struggling with these several pounds to lose back. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Some times a change in the "routine" helps break a plateau. You're getting a lot of exercise in, are you eating enough calories? If so, maybe just play in your range some going from low to high end every few days. Also bumping up ST can help, I'm not sure what you can and can't do as far as exercise goes, but change how you do it from time to time. That stops the body from getting too comfortable with your exercise.
To give freely without expectation is a true gift.

Hi Everyone, well, my scale seems to be stuck at 162. Let me tell you a little about myself and maybe you can give me some ideas. First of all, I had a kidney transplant in 2002, I have done really well as far as that goes, but, the medicine you take for anti-rejection has several side effects. I have osteoporosis,I am on Fosomax for that, anemia, I give myself an epogen shot every other week for that and now I have developed Crohn's disease, and am taking Asacol for that. I haven't gained in a few weeks but I haven't lost either.
Also, in September 2012, I had neck surgery, which was caused by the medicine I am on, sort of a deteriation of cartilidge. I have never felt better since that surgery in my life. They say you never how much pain you were in until you have no more pain. I can attest to that.
I have a home gym and I use it everyday. Elliptical, treadmill, stationary bike and handweights. I also have several dvd's that I use for exercise. Yesterday, I did Leslie Sansone's 4 mile walk for life plus my stationary bike. I usually do 90 minutes a day of exercise. 30 in the morning and 60 in the evening. I log my food, watch what I eat and have been juicing for about a month and a half with the Jack Lalane. I have always juiced, but now I do it everyday. Any ideas on something that would break this cycle, I would love to get down in the 150's.
