I do know that you cannot have the TV on that is a distraction. But I do not have a TV in the bedroom and I still cannot sleep. MSFROGGIE I have to one sleeping pill at 7pm if I want it to work by 10:30 then I can go to sleep but I do not stay sleep. I take a nice hot shower or bath and I will drink a hot cup of tea then I tend to go sleep. But I still do not sleep all night.

I have insomnia, I can't shut my mind off so that I can fall asleep. I do have to take a sleeping pill. I fought it for a year, and finally gave it. The more research I do, I see that I have a triple threat, thyroid problems, overweight AND I don't exercise. I found that out this week. Needless to say I was not a happy camper emoticon

I find that I do need a routine. No TV in the bedroom (years ago I would fall asleep watching TV). I take a pill around 9:30 and then go to bed and read for about 30 to 45 minutes, until I'm sleepy.

Life is too short to waste time hating anyone (including yourself)

Someone was talking about sleep hygiene. Keep it dark, temperature cool, and soothing white noise if you need it.

Ugh, two or three nights ago, I didn't get any sleep at all. last night I barely got any. Butterfly, as I said, one of my problems is I have no way in advance of knowing when I'll be home, or have to be up in the morning. So having a constant bedtime is not really possible.

I do have pills to take, but I hate having to take them. Partially because they make me stumble around and mess with my memory(it's an Ambien generic) and partially because I just hate taking pills for any reason. I generally wait until a headache literally drives me to my knees before I take medicine, for example.

I do use meditation fairly often, though not a guided meditation.

I had been doing well, with advice from this forum. This week was a bomb, though. Just could NOT get to sleep 3 nights. But, here is what works for me, that may work for you. Decide what time you need to go to bed (make it a constant). One hour before that, turn off the computer and the TV and any other electronic thing that requires attention. Do some quiet thing, like knitting or washing dishes. I don't drink herb tea, since that makes me get up to go potty later on. The time that you decided on comes - go to bed! I make that important by committing to donate money to a charity for each 15 minutes that I am still up.
Those are the new things that I learned here. Thanks, SparkTeam! Other things are a guided meditation recording while I lie there, and a curtain that makes it dark, and no book or TV in the room.

emoticon lousy nights sleep

I started out top weight 245 but that was when I actually got on a scale. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia almost 20 years ago. Over the years I've learned that I do so much better when I eat organic foods and I haven't eaten red meat in years I have been gradually working more raw foods, vegetables and fruit into my diet. I avoid drive through resturants like the plague.

I didn't get much sleep last night but it was my own fault. I stayed up and read until 2 AM. I know better because my cat wakes me up every morning about 7:00. He is very persistent even when the door is shut! I did take a nap this afternoon though.

It is hard. Like for me last night I did not go to sleep until 3am and I was back up at 6am. So, it is hard. Some days, I can take that hot shower, turn on some smooth jazz and fall right to sleep. But I still get up and in some cases I can go back to sleep and in most cases I am up. I have tried just about all of the over counter medicine and they do not work. I really do not want to take the heavy stuff, because I do not want to become dependent upon it. But, we are going to look on the brighter side and it will work for us in the long run. emoticon emoticon

This is my first post on the spark forums, decided to give this whole community thing a try instead of lurking. And first up is the whole "sleep" myth/rumor I've heard about(that is, the existence of sleep is a rumor...for me)

Ok, so every guide to good sleep guide I've ever read had two major parts. first, using your room ONLY for sleep, which is easy enough(in theory)

But the problem is the second. Going to sleep at the same time every night. Why is it a problem?

I work retail.

I have no way of knowing in advance what time I'll even be home from a closing shift. in the last week alone it's varied from 11:30 PM to 1:00 AM. and while my opening shifts are rare, they still happen. How can I set up a standard sleep schedule with such variables. Does anyone have any suggestions, or something that can work instead?
