Hi and today is my first day as a member, and have not tried Spark before, although I was urged to do so 7 weeks ago by a nutritionist at Temple Cardiology in Flourtown, PA.
I would like to learn what foods hurt my sleep. I think not having enough water before 6 pm is the reason why I get up and have to use the bathroom 4 times or more a night, therefore always feeling tired all day with little energy and then feeling depressed.
I also have mild sleep apnea.

Thanks. Mom and dad left yesterday morning. I slept from 1pm until 6pm, got up and ate something, then went back to bed and slept until 4 this morning. I felt so much better and was able to get in a little yard work before it got too hot out. Hope you are having a great day. Mary Beth

I haven't been sleeping well this week because I am so tired and in a lot of pain. I have been really overdoing it with my mom and dad being here, they left this morning. I cleaned up a little and laid down about 1 pm and woke up at 6 pm. Had a shakeology for dinner and now I am back in bed. I hate being sick, especially when it interferes with fun with mom and dad. Hopefully I will sleep good tonight. Night night everyone. Sleep tight nd don't let the bed bugs bite!

Got almost 5 hours of sleep last night - very good for me. And I ate everything under the sun last evening so I can't figure foods are involved in my issue of sleep. Who knows? But I'm grateful for the 5 hours last night and 7 the night before - far different from my normal 2-4 hours. No complaints here.

I didn't sleep well last night but I know it was because I smoked too many cigarettes yesterday. Need to quit those damn things altogether. I'm trying but it's hard when my hubby smokes. Might try to get in a nap today.

First post here on Sparkpeople, so a big hello to all!

I'm a long time insomniac. I take Ambien extended release every night, which has helped immensly.

I also have found that ASMR videos (stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) help me sleep. You can find a plethora of vids on youtube that deal with ASMR. I find that they help me to relax and sleep through the night. My partner is a heavy (and by heavy, I mean he rattles the whole apartment) snorer and this helps drown it out too, as an added benefit.

There are many people who state that the blue light from computer screens is disruptive of sleep patterns at night, and I found a nifty, free little program for my computer called f.lux (website: http://justgetflux.com/) that takes the blue out and gives my screen a reddish hue so that the blue doesn't affect my eyes. I even have mine set to alter the colour temperature based on the time of day, as set by my computer's GPS. It seems to help me a lot.

Hi I am new to all of this but I had a CPAP machine that made so much noise that I could never sleep - noises bother me something awful since I am a very light sleeper. I have a new machine now and have gotten several different masks and finally found one that is QUIET!! I still wake up several times in the night but don't feel rested in the AM. Have taken sleeping pills, allergy meds but I am not a pill type of person so I will try my best to get any information possible from this board. Thanks for being there for me!! God Bless

6BALLMAN - That makes perfect sense. Allergy pills contain antihistamines which is a common ingredient in sleeping pills. I prefer natural sleep aids like melatonin, valerian root, and passion flower.

Not food related, but when I started taking an allergy pill before bed I went from waking up 5 times per night to once. I feel MUCH more rested

I haven't found any foods that help or hinder my sleep. I do feel if I get enough exercise during the day (but not too close to bedtime) that I sleep much better.

I have great news to report, morning BS was 135, fine with me and much better and emoticon I have started losing a little weight after over one month of gaining or maintaining. emoticon

The Dr changed one of my medication and lo and behold, I started losing weight ag emoticon an. emoticon
emoticon
Now I need to not get cocky and think, gosh, look what I did,and get a swelled head, and to remember, that my GOD (GOOD ORDERLY DIRECTION) does for me, with SP, what I cannot do alone! emoticon

i've been looking at the supplements I take that may interfere with sleep, and the one I found might be Ginger, so will adjust my intake and see if that helps. Also am attacking my insomnia differently. I did not get in all of the TO-DOs last evening, but did add a little sleep time, and that is encouraging--at least enough to keep me trying again tonight. emoticon emoticon Roberta

P.S. Had a banana/chocolate smoothie with milk and honey for breakfast, and it did make me sleepy. Will have some before bedtime tonight to test it.

I always thought chocolate keeps you awake because of the caffeine. I don't think caffeine really affects me so I'll have chocolate in the evening sometimes. But if it makes you sleepy I'll have it more often (my favorite food in the world).

re eating chocolate and sweets making you sleepy but not good for diabetes:
for the past 10 days I have not been able to stop eating chocolate truffles - was given a gift of several small packs of them, drat - and my BP has really spiked as well as my vision being impaired and little sleep - I know the impaired vision is because of onset diabetes - I've been able to keep that at bay without medication so far, but now my eye troubles really scaring me. Hate going to the doctor but she needs to know and for me to fess up to it.....

I went to a sleep clinic several years ago...the doctor/ sleep specialist gave me some great tips I have used since that time and have no more sleep issues. Stop eating 2 hours before bed, take a calcium/ magnesium supplement before bed (this is what is in milk, probably why it helps too) and no caffeine after noon. He also said that bed should be for sleeping, if you do other things like work, watch tv, etc you may have a hard time sleeping. Everyone should have a wind down routine and electronic stimulation (tv, computer, etc.) 2 hours preceding bedtime is not good for your brain as it keeps it awake.

I have used Sleepy time tea (double strength) with some success (maybe 70% of the time). I keep it at bedside so if I should get up I will have a sip. Must watch the time though because if it is when in 3 or 4 hours of wake time I am sleepy and foggy when the alarm goes off.

Yeah, your post helped me. I'll have to try the tea, I have loads of sleepy time teas and don't use them.

Does it help to have a bedtime ritual? I've heard that when you eat has nothing to do with weight loss but maybe it does affect sleep if you eat to close to bedtime or if eating makes you stay awake.

Yes, the milk really helps but as I am older, I need more melatonin too. Take some at night, not sure if it is working. Have to be more consistent. Cold milk is better.

I've been sleeping much better lately. I reached my goal weight in September but I'm struggling to maintain (yes, it's a struggle sometimes). But I don't allow myself to eat anything after 8 p.m. and I don't watch TV after 10. I usually sleep 5-6 hours straight now where I never got more than 2-4 before. I also try to get in 8-10K steps a day. I hope this keeps up.

I have a glass of milk and this helps me go back to sleep.
It does not have to be warm either, I prefer it cold.

the cherry juice worked for me kinda. But it is syrupy for ur taste sometimes. The best bet is eat a few cherries. Works for me.

Also. BAREGEMMA their is a study saying artificial sweetners can cause cancer among other problems

Someone on Dr Oz mentioned that drinking tart cherry juice worked for her. I have some so if I don't forget, I'm trying it tonight. emoticon hopeful!

A few years back I got it my head that in order to reduce my sugar intake, I needed to replace real sugar with artificial sweetener. In my case, I developed restless leg syndrome which made my insomnia even worse. My legs were practically tap dancing by themselves when I went to bed! I stopped taking the sweeteners and my legs went back to normal. I've since reduced my daily intake of sugar the old fashioned way, reading ingredient labels and just not eating sugar. I now also avoid any food with artificial sweeteners as it really freaked me out to know that they have had such a pronounced neurological affect on me.

i've tried everything i can. the rest is up to the good one up above. let's see if i get to bed now and up by 6 30 that'll be 5 hrs. cool though. i napped today so that's not helping. emoticon
