processed, salty, fast foods, which are a good thing to avoid anyway.
Sadly, also chocolate at times.

My U/S results were good. I have 2 spots on my liver that have to be monitored every two years but the consensus is that they are heameangiomas(not sure of the spelling). As long as they don't change in size, I am OK.
At least I am controlling the burning because I know what I can and can't eat so I don't set off any triggers. I agree that cutting out foods that are good for us sucks. I even have to think
about eating a banana now.

Good luck with the ultrasound results!

I have had to cut out my coffee, tomato everything, onions and garlic(most the time). I was still suffering chest pain before cutting them out and now I take my 40 mg of Protonix in the morning and I'm doing much better now. But I am really unhappy about the foods I've had to cut. They're basically all my favorite things lol

I get the sweats a lot too. Lately I start to get the burning about an hour after I have eaten. Went for an ultrasound on the abdomen today and will get the results on Tuesday.
The radiologist asked me if I still had my gallbladder. Let's hope I can get some answers.

I too take 40 mg of Nexium every day morning, and if I forget I start to get heartburn by noon. I don't get acid reflux, but am told that I have a very high acid level. If I do forget to take it, or I need to pick up more from the drugstore, I suffer for two days before it gets back to normal.

citrus fruits, tomatoes, wine (occasionally), is what affects me.

I really love being braless too. I've been sick with the flu and
had been coughing and ear aches, so called the doctor on Wednesday night
and I told him I had stopped taking the Nexium while I was sick and surprise,
surprise, the earache and cough was from the reflux. I had real pain and so much
burning. Doc told me to take prednisone in conjunction with the Nexium for 3 days
and I do feel slightly better but now I'm getting the sweats and feel like I'm
incontinent. Wondering if this is from the Prednisone. Any ideas?

I have a more recent diagnosis (last 6 months) a d have found it almost impossible to wear any bra. : ( No heartburn for me just sternum chest collarbone pain and trouble swallowing. Now taking Protonix and still have some changes to go for foods that trigger it. Just learning.

I have had a lot of burning, coughing and pain today. I tought I was having a
heart attack. I do take 40 mg of Nexium.
I had a very rich tomato sauce and rissoles and that could have been the trigger.
As for the bras, I am in Australia and have our big department stores here too and
yes, I have had fittings. Still prefer without the wire.

Anna, have you ever been to a nice department store like Dillard's or Macy's and had a bra fitting? It is done modestly and though the garments may cost a bit more (go during a sale), they will fit better and you won't have to forgo the support an underwire will give you. One tip that some fitters fail to do is to have you turn from the mirror when they help you into the bra.

I have throat reflux that was diagnosed when I coughed continuously for three months. I've found that OTC Nexium works best and I can tell when I have forgotten to take it for a day or two. Sleeping on my back on two pillows is helpful.

Another trigger for me was the underwire bra. I took out the wire
and feel so much better as nothing is pushing on my sternum.
I will slowly replace all bras with wirefree. I've hardly had to take
any Nexium. Feels great too.

Not many people come here that I can see. I started with having asthma for decades, then finally my Dr. said, I want you to stop Dairy and you wouldn't believe it, but, after several days, no more wheezing. At first he said lactose intolerant, but now its all dairy., then last summer had gallbladder out and have had trouble ever since. I do have acid erosion in esophagus and acid reflux, taking protonix, and helps a little, but still trouble. Have pains constantly, have had many tests. I am starting to see just how the ph level in my body is and eliminate several foods and add others to balance myself out. Check the sight, mindbodygreen.com Hope we all feel better soon. Oh, do not drink purified water.

Hello to all on this site. I have been with SP for several years, and today I decided to join this group. Not sure how often I will be on but I have dealt with GERD for years and now have esophageal erosion. I am on protonix this time and have been on many meds. before. Drs. seem to just hand meds to you. I am researching and being my own Dr,lol, and have come to my next trial and error. I have nothing to lose, so try to help myself all I can and will share with you all. Today, I bought PH strips to test my ph level, as I believe this is a problem for many. Having an acidic body leads to many illnesses, including the excema, dishydrotic, Ive been dealing with., I am going to see where I stand with the acid level/alkaline level in my body and get it on Balance. I got my info. from several sites and have got a book Im waiting for at the library called the acid alkaline diet by Christopher Vasey. One site to check is mindbodygreen.com and another is phionbalance.com. Im going to try this for the next 6 weeks and see how it goes. I am willing to bet most of us fall into the unbalanced area. Ill check in again soon. TY
Also want to add the 8 rules which can be found at phionbalance.com

I find sleeping triggers it, coffee, hot chocolate, water sometimes. The doctor told me to stay away from chocolate, tea and coffee. Gave me a prescription and that was it. Never said the why or anything to me. The prescription he gave me I can't take I am allergic to something in it or on the same level as it. He hasn't contacted the pharmacy or me to suggest something else.
Pharmacist suggested an over the counter, been taking that since January. But have been reading that none of the stuff should be taken for long periods of time. I don't see the doctor again til April. Really at a loss here. emoticon

Hi, I am new to this forum. I did not know I had GERD until went to a doctor because water was getting caught in my esophagus. I was diagnosed with an ulcer in my esphagus (Barrett's Esphagus) due to acid reflux. I found that putting the head of by bed on a few two by fours to raise the head of the bed helps alot! I sleep well as the acid does not flow up. Also, I eat small portions and start the morning with a protein drink. I also have to take two Prilosec every morning for the rest of my life. I hope some of these tips helps someone else.

I have taken Rx for years. Sometimes I have horrible pain that is almost endurable. I have had my heart checked out and it is ok. Some of my doctors thing the horrible attacks are esophageal spasm. So far I haven't figured out trigger. No consistent.

WOW !!! I just came to the conclusion (with DX from a doctor) that I have GERD. I have been having gastic problems since I could remember but no where to the extent it is now and have been for the last year. it is VERY frustrating because I have NO ideal what is making it hurt. I wake up in the middle of the night in pain and eat crackers that eases it enough for me to sleep a couple of more hours and I do it again. I wake up w/ pain so I eat more crackers and take my pantoprazole. I just got this RX 3 weeks ago and it is not helping. Water makes it hard to breath so I am dehydrated. I am sooo confussed as to what to do. I will be reading here often to help me through this. I am 55 yrs old and this is really throwing me for a loop. Pray for Me !!...and help w/als on what to do. THANKS

Spaghetti sauce (tomato) triggers for me and i find I like pasta with some burnt butter and garlic tossed with ricotta. If I am somewhere and they only have the tomato sauce, i only put a teaspoon of sauce. I had roast pork yesterday and felt nauseous and sweaty. Too rich for me.

Bacons set me off. Worse than sausage. Usually anything that is moderately to extreme salty food set me off. So I watch my sodium and my stomach acid is okay for now. Spaghetti sauce is 50/50 chance of giving me a bad heartburn. It all depends on how much I ate of it.

Thanks for the tips.
I have to use salt substitute and sometimes it seems it's a little hard on my stomach.
I had this condition under control. Not sure what has triggered this flare up.

My gastroenterologist (spelling?) once told me it was seasonal and they don't know why.
But they see flare ups in the spring and fall.
I wonder if anyone else has ever heard of this?

I understand your frustration. Having this kind of diet can feel very restricting. I've done a little research and found what foods I CAN eat that have NO acid. Fruit with no acid: bananas, coconuts, mangoes, and avocados. I haven't tried the coconuts, but I eat lot of avocados and bananas with no problem Low acid fruits I eat are: apples and pears. Vegetables that I eat are asparagus, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, and celery. (Eat the vegetables cooked while you're having a flare up). In moderation I eat potatoes (just boiled potatoes plain without skin). Some other foods that you can eat are cabbage and beans (pinto, white, navy, red, and lima). I only eat very lean meats: chicken breast -skinless, turkey patties 93% fat free, pork tender loin, hamburger 90% fat free, steak or roast (very lean- eye round, top round, top sirloin). You may be able to eat fish, but I don't like seafood. Skim milk is ok. Basically a low fat diet.

The key is in how it is cooked. No spices (except salt), no butter, no oil.

I have given up eating out. I do not eat processed foods, that includes not eating smoked, processed, or pickled meat (lunch meat or sausage). Nothing out of a box or can. I do not use spices of any kind, except for salt. I only drink water and on occasion skim milk.

Eat small meals. Eat slowly. Chew, chew, chew your food. Don't eat after 8PM.

These are a few tips I have for anyone suffering from acid reflux. I also have GERD and suffer from reflux laryngitis and esophagitis from complication from GERD. Hope this helps.

Thank you for that information. I knew the bell peppers were not hot peppers and I assumed they would be okay. I forgot about the acidic factor. Recently did some research on that.
Hmm..the list of foods I'm seeing on that list does not leave much room for variety.
So, it may have caught up with me I don't know.
For the last six days it's as if I wasn't taken my meds at all.
It's frustrating because a lot of the foods are really good for me too. Even coffee is now considered to have health benefits.

Thanks everyone! Will continue to read here.

As I said in my introduction, I can go for months and not be bothered by most foods.

I've been on a fresh vegetable diet over the last few months (since last oct) sweet bell peppers, grape tomatoes, cauliflower, carrots and cucumbers everyday. No problem whatsoever. Then about 6 days ago I had ulcer like symptoms. Burning in stomach and some acid reflux.

Do you all think it's possible the tomatoes just now caught up with me?
I take two generic prevacid daily.
What about the bell peppers? It's my understanding bell peppers are okay.

Thanks for letting me share.

Things that trigger my acid reflux pain are; spicy foods, tomatoes, fruit flavored yogurt, greasy/fried foods, sometimes bananas, butter or margarine, and juices that have acid.

Stress. Eating too fast. Letting my stomach stay empty for long periods of time. Not being vertical when I do eat. Anything spicy (even Taco Hell is too spicy for me!). Lying down (I sleep in a recliner).

And then there's the who-knows-what-caused-it-this-time-s.
Mostly I don't feel my reflux. It's there, but I don't know it. Makes it hard to protect against.

I just found something else that gives me reflux. I had some leftover roasted vegetables
and now have reflux. I will eliminate for a few weeks and check again to see if it still does
the same.

I have started cutting out coffee and might have one every three days and notice the difference.
My oat sourdough bread has helped me a lot. When I get burning, I toast some of this sourdough and it helps settle my stomach. I also keep Gaviscon handy for when it gets really bad.

I wish I knew. There is no rhyme nor reason to it. One day I can eat berries, cantlope, oranges etc. Salsa, spicy foods and no problem then another day WHAM I am in bad shape. Like today!! It's been sneaking up on me for the past week and today is BAD! So I am nibbling on crackers and keeping the Gaviscon close by. Had to relent and start taking meds. But I know better days are ahead, I look forward to them.

Dairy seems to set me off. No GERD while strictly Paleo eating. Tried a cup of whole milk and had the worst GERD and nausea. Not fun at all. Seemed to give me symptoms for a couple of days. Been 4 days since the milk and finally feeling better.

but too much water can be a problem too
as well citrus
overloading my stomach
carbonated drinks
laying flat
pastry is a BIG problem too emoticon

I am beginning to suspect my favourite food is trouble too emoticon so will avoid them for a while now
and of course chocolate is a very definite NO-NO

Hi, I'm new to Sparkpeople. I take Prilosec for it but a few things trigger it beyond the meds. Water is a trigger for me. I'm so glad to hear it is for others. I can no longer eat spicy foods, orange juice, anything acid.

Neither one belong on a healthy plan for GERD or gastroparesis.

If I get myself into some digestive episode, my only relief is to "band-aid" it with sucralfate (Carafate™) until it passes.
I've had all the OTC meds, then all the Rx meds of the same families... and those all worked for a brief period of time and then quit. I was switched to AciPhex™ and bethanechol, which helped a lot and for much longer.
The symptoms have progressed lately, so the dosages have been doubled and I'm being sent to a higher level specialist to see what more can be done.
I *do NOT* want to hear the "surgery" word.

Would you believe water? along with fried food, tomatoes and coffee. With coffee it is the brand. Folgers seems to cause problems more then some others. I find that timing is also important, there are some foods I will only eat early in the day.

Definitely: tomatoes, onions, garlic, STRESS

After trying very hard to find ways to fit tomatoes, onions and garlic into my diet with out success, I have given up. In soups and recipes calling for onions, I will add dried chives with success.

Stress. Any kind of stress. Momentary stress, such as DH swearing while putting the blinds up. Long term stress also has an enduring effect, such as DS moving out of state and dealing with a substance abuse problem. For the stress I have started taking 5-HTP, which is a pre-cursor to melatonin. I take 200 mg after dinner. It seems to help me relax and sleep more in the night. I have fewer nigh-time acid reflux episodes.

Tomato sauce triggers it more than anything else! it sucks since I'm Italian and have grown up on lasagna, ravioli, manicotti, etc. Also greasy fatty foods, BBQ sauce, obviously ketchup, and sometimes spicy foods, it just depends on the day with those. Greek yogurt helps decrease it which is wonderful and so does sting cheese. I'll cry if cheese starts giving me problems with my GERD like JOANNEEMERALD. My heart goes out to you!

I have had GERD for about 7 years, and I too find that everything is a trigger, or so it seems. One very simple thing I've found is that black papper (which I love) is a big trigger. Taking pepper out of my dishes helps a lot. Thing is,I don't just cook for myself and we're a family that loves spicy foods. So, slowly, I'm gathering recipes that are healthy and tasty, but without pepper or other spices that cause my acid reflux.

As I've said before, acupuncture has strengthened my digestive system and helped me a great deal. I would rather that than take a bunch of pills every time pain hits.

I've suffered with GERD for about 20 years. Seems like everything is a trigger. I do see relief taking Prilosec OTC. I usually take it every 2-3 days and this helps. I still have to be care about eating and drinking before lying down and exercise.

Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.
