I had given up coffee but have just reintroduced to see whether it still bothers me. I am almost wheat free and feel so much better. We have to find what suits us.

I get discomfort with cold water. I can only drink a few sips whereas I can drink a whole bottle of 600ml with no problem. I find red sauces bother me as does red wine. I have also stopped porridge(oatmeal) as it makes me burn now. I had a chronic cough which was really annoying and now that I am taking Nexium, voila... NO more cough.

I had originally posted that I didn't have pain with my gerd but I do believe I do. It seems like everything under the sun can trigger a gerd episode. However it wasn't until these last couple of times that I noticed pain. I had just eaten breakfast - oatmeal with fruit - and 20 minutes later went to wake my youngest son ... I leaned over on his bed (sideways propped up on an elbow) and I felt breakfast come up my throat followed by pain in my mid-lower chest. It went away after I stood up. Then today I drank cold water after my workout but before my walk (I typically don't drink cold water) ... while walking I started feeling the water come up my throat followed by pain in the same mid-lower chest region. Feeling the meal come up my throat is nothing new ... the pain is. But as of now it is more discomfort than pain.

I have pondered this for years,.. Your stomach is acidic. Your small intestine is alkaline. There is an area near the bottom of the stomach in the intestine, where an acid alkaline reaction must occur. Most bloating and gas production seems to be blamed on normal bacteria in the intestine, that may be true to some extent, but what about the other? You need both to digest food properly, (acid stomach and alkaline gut). You mix an acid with an alkaline you get a salt, water and gas, basic chemistry class. Any way just thinking.
Possibly if your gut feels like it is acidic then you may well have Diverticulitis. just a guess. Hope everyone is feeling better this morning!

Called the Doctor. There is a bug going around that causes throat burning, sinus drainage, coughing with fever. Wonderful! not! Zyrtec is a good drug to combat allergy symptoms. It helps to slow down the mucus production that is part of the allergic response along with the other things that occur in response to an allergen. I was taking Allegra it worked well for me, but is too expensive for the VA I guess, they switched me to Zyrtec after trying Claritin which for me was like eating an M&M-- no help. I was reminded also that some foods increase Mucus production, like Orange Juice and MIlk and to limit my exposure to them. Hope this helps.

I have yet another chest infection(congestion). I have the throat burn, chills and sweat. Doc has me on antibiotics as my ears ar also inflamed. Last time I had this cough and throat burn he said it was from my GERD problems and uped my Nexium. He also wants me to take Zyrtec. I am at my wit's end as to why I keep getting this cough. Any suggestions?

I don't know if my Gerd is severly acting up or if my allergies are, but this is the strangest cold I think I have ever had. I have had Burning throat and runny/stuffy nose for 24 hours. The throat burn is in the upper part. I was told years ago I had a hiatal hernia but it only shows up about every other time they check me. I have been told I have Barretts Esophagus and was put on Prilosec twice a day. My combivent inhaler helps for about 30 minutes to an hour, As does my allergy pill - Zyrtec. Guess I need to call the Doctor, since I started chilling earlier and have ran a low grade fever ever since. I do not think this is an allergy to my combivent or zyrtec which is a relative of vistaril which I took for anxiety attacks for years.

I have given up coffee and when I do have one now, I notice that bloating an reflux present. I have also stayed away from tomatoes, but I don't like the idea of being on Nexium all the time. Sometimes I just take a piece of fresh ginger. That seems to settle my stomach. I also had an endoscopy a few years back and found a hiatus hernia as well. Reading about the oesophagus has given me a better understanding and will ask my GP to refer me to have another endoscopy.

I have GERD and it started after surgery 4 years ago. I suspect I have an ulcer but the doctor did not do the scope to confirm that. I believe my triggers are my emotions in stressful situations, NSAIDs (since the surgery), and soda. For the past 2 years, I have been taking lansoprazole every morning and occasionally ranitidine at bedtime. That depends on whether I'm having an episode or not. Both medications were prescribed by a physician.
I try really hard not to take any NSAIDs, if I can help it. For the last few weeks, I have gradually decreased the amount of soda I drink. Today is the first day of no soda and no caffeine. Since I changed my diet at the beginning of March, I have lost 5 lbs and I've been able to be off the lansoprazole for half of the time. That has given me hope that I can live symptom free.

I went for a routine 50 year old check up endoscoping is part of that as is colonoscopy. I found out that Hiatal Hernia's lead to scaring of the esophagus from the acid burns. It can occur all the way into your nose that scaring. They call this Barrett's Esophagus also precancer of the Esophagus. My smoking didn't help much I am sure. I quit that nasty addiction 4 years and 12 days ago. They rescope me every 5 years. I take prilosec 20 mg twice a day and try to stay away from the foods that I know cause burning sensations to some extent. I also have a swollen thyroid caused from a cold nodule (a non cancerous growth in my thyroid) I take synthroid for that. Yes I worry about coming down with cancer, I have lost a good friend to esophogeal cancer, one to smokers lung cancer, and one to kidney cancer, and one to breast cancer in the last 7 years. I have learned Diet is a key to beating cancer as is Exercise and Attitude. Fruits, Vegetables and Grains are very important. I was told by dietician to eat 5 fruits and veggies every day. My experience with this illness-- Cancer has shown me it is 5 different fruits, 5 different veggies, not 3 fruits and 2 veggies for example. Hope this helps

Thank you for replying FATTYPATTY. Believe it or not I feel less anxious at the moment hearing what you had to say. I have never posted in these forums before. I'm nearly 60 and my weight isn't an issue but I'm sure what I eat is! Have you ever been tested for esophagus cancer?

For Rivergirl4now,
I have had a problem off and on with a hiatal hernia. One of the symptoms was pain the chest. It first surfaced in 2002 then I didn't have it for a long time so when I had pain in my chest and upper abdoment I thought maybe it was heart (I'm 63). Saw my primary who put me on a 30 day course of Nexium (40 mg) which helped. I've eliminated citrus fruit from my diet, eating after dinner, trying to lose weight and also figure out if I have other food triggers.
If you are having chest pain, it could either be gas captured in that area or a haital hernia.

I just joined this site and saw this thread about AR. I found out I had silent reflux after going to an ENT for hoarseness and congestion. This was about 3 years ago. I changed my diet for the most part and it improved some what but I still had lots of congestion. I went to another ENT about 1.5 years ago and they looked down my throat with the scope, through my nose, and he said there was just a little sign of reflux. Well, NOW after researching this maddening thing off and on since then, because I still had the congestion, reflux will cause sinus problems! I'm so worried now that I might have esophageal cancer! I feel like my throat is swollen. My brother in law just had esophageal cancer and he is recovering and now I feel obsessed with myself and wondering if I could have cancer. I'm now wondering if I need the test to find out. Do any of you ever worry about this having reflux and all? I really hate feeling so obsessed about cancer. I recently went on meds for low thyroid and I'm wondering now if my thyroid is swollen. I'm so glad I'm seeing my Dr next week. I can't think of anything else!!! Lately I've noticed a slight burning between my breast bone. I have to admit, I'm a Mexican food addict and eat a lot of hot food. I have my whole life and I'm 59. I'm not much of a drinker and my reflux is only silent. I try and stop eating by 7pm. I've also started eating lighter in the evenings. I just started taking a course of Previcid. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? Thanks!

Your message helped me greatly as I am just beginning to deal with acid reflux from a hiatal hernia. The doctor put me on Nexium, 40mg. It helps with the acid not coming up at night, but often gives me stomach pain and gas during the day. My worst episode recently was after eating spaghetti. Now I realize it was the tomato sauce. What is the reference to fractures about? Is it a side effect of Pantaprazole? I've found that not grazing after dinner has helped. It will also help with weight loss. At least one good side effect!

I have been taking Pantaprazole since 2009. It stops working after awhile. When this happens my esophagus acts up( I have Barretts). Dr told me to switch to over the counter acid reducer for a week or so and then go back to the Pantaprazole. Instead of taking it in the morning he suggests taking it 1 hour before nightime meal.I too worry about fractures due to these acid reducing meds.I just had a scope last week. Dr says all seems ok. Waiting for results of the biopsy. Tomatoes, citrus fruits, chocolate, peppers, greasy food all contribute to the burning. Whats interesting for me is I never get heartburn. I have a hiatal hernia and it will send up the acid near the entrance to my esophagus, thus over years creating the Barretts(the esophagus takes on the characteristics of the stomach lining. I will get a pain from the front of my chest out to my middle back. It feels like I swallowed an ice cube(only way I can describe it)When I get the Esophagitis it will send pain to my breast area as well. These attacks sometimes get confused with a heart attack. I have my headboard elevated to prevent the gravity from sending up that acid into my lower esophagus. Having a good week. Staying away from triggers. Miss tomatoes though because they are a useful aid to recipes.Hope you all are doing great and my info helps someone.

Most of the reflux meds increase risk of hip and vertebrae fractures. And as you said long term prednisone does too.
I had a scope last week and it came back that I have a sml ulcer in my esophagus. I take prevecid and he added carafate to heal the ulcer but according to my research the two interfere with each other. After doing some online research I have decided to try an alternative method and stop the prevacid. I have already broken each hip due to traumatic injuries and don't want to increase my risk of more fractures.
A friend recommended Aloe Vera gel so I am giving it a try. I have felt good today although I didn't like the taste of it. Mixing it with green tea and a little honey helped.
My triggers are eating and not eating but actually sweet foods are the worst and I'm sure my diet coke habit doesn't help. Starting today I am limiting myself to one glass of pop a day even though I know NONE would be better.

Chocolate is one of the worst so of course I love it! Anything fatty or greasy will do it and citrus (especially orange juice) is probably the worst. Pizza is bad. Creamy items like cheesecake will immediately put me in reflux hell. All of these are especially bad at night. I take Nexium which helps somewhat and I also use Tums. Since I have been watching my calories I have much less of a problem with it.

Hello, Well for me the main causes are any cooked cheese dishes, greasy food, wine, and sugary things like pavlovas, sweet puddings, candies, chocolates, cakes, cream ect.. In other words all the things I would like to eat. I have been on pills for years to take in the morning ,but lately ,because I always get the acid reflux and pains at night I have been taking the pill just before I go to bed. I try to make sure it is about 4 hours after I have eaten. I am finding that this is helping a lot. I found it very interesting to read through these posts and see the pill I am on causes osteoporosis. I have this and was told it was because I am on long term prednisone, which I take for polymylagia rhematica. I am going to look into that, thanks to the people who bought it up.

Mexican food, chocolate and cinnamon....I can have Mexican food at noon ,go to bed at 10 pm and be sure to be woken up later with acid reflux. I love Mexican food, but really have to stay away. Chocolate too, will make me sick almost immediately after eating it and cinnamon (as in yummy, gooey, cinnamon roll) gives me painful heartburn. I know all these things, but still try eating these foods at times. I really suffered, for 2 days, after eating Chili Mac for supper last week.
And what is Barrets? I`ve never heard of that.

I am new to spark. I have Refluc, hiatal hernia, and Barrets. I have not had that many episodes of reflux but the hernia throws up that acid into my esophagus. I take pataprazole sine 2009. At times it stops working and the dr told me to go on over the counter acid reducer for a couple of weeks and then return to the pantaprzole. I seem to have agrivated my esophagus over the holidays getting into some nono food ie:chocolate, coffee, etc and now I am paying the price. I think my esophagitis has returned, pain in upper back feels like a knot. Seeing the dr tomorrow. Just wondering if anyone has Barretts. My last scope was in 2009. Sometimes eating anything triggers the erosion of the esophagus. Cant stay on my eating plan ,having clear broth , jello, and drastic measures right now to heal.

Rich foods, soft drinks, alcohol, peanut butter, ordinary breads (fresh or otherwise), cookies (especially with chocolate chips in them), sugary foods, citrus fruits & juices, pork and processed meats for starters.
I am sure there are other things too but those are the first ones to come to mind.

Carbs, carbs and carbs! In fact we were doing a modified Atkins diet a couple years ago, and although I only lost a few pounds - not really exercising - the reflux went away. When I resumed "normal" habits (breads & cookies more than pasta), it came back. Water before bedtime is bad too. I've slept on my left side for a few years now, and my left shoulder and hip are worse for the wear...

My Barrets Esphagus is so far keeping under control. I have the test every year to be sure it is not going into cancer.j I started as acid reflux many years ago and it just got worse as the years went by. I have a pill I take very morning and really watch everything I eat. No chocolate, tomatoes or tomatoe products. no caffine, no carbination, no oranges or citris fruits, no alcohol and some other things. If I watch all of these things close I have no trouble. Just be careful so that yours does not turn into a worse case.
Take pride in how far you have come and have faith in how far you can go!

Alcohol, every time! I'm no big drinker, never have more than one glass of wine or one beer, but will have a large vodka. Whenever I have alcohol, even in the afternoon, say at a bbq, I can guarantee being woken up by that awful reflux. I take medication but they only work if I drink milk, cold and lots of it.

I was on a gastric diet years ago and the doctor had said not to have fresh bread and soft cooked eggs and pork. This holds true today and I find it bothers me still. Oranges and tomatoes also bother me. I find that even taking a Nexium before a meal doesn't guarantee I won't have the burning.I find that when a food bothers me, I eliminate it for a while and have it once in a while. I think the yeast bread is a culprit too.

Hi NANNER4242...What is the name of the supplement you are using?
I'm on a medication called 'Pantoprazole' I haven't seen anyone here using it. I can't use Nexium or certain other ones because it coincides with other needed medication I take. But I also notice BBQ sauce triggers my Acid reflux too, It's a slow learning process for me but I'm willing to make any necessary changes than to have an episode.
I'm Not Where I Need to Be...BUT...Thank God I'm NOT Where I Used to Be!

I haven't noticed a specific trigger for my acid reflux, I just seem to almost always have it, as well as digestive issues which I assume are related. Eat, don't eat, it doesn't matter. I've had nexium but hate taking prescription drugs. I did finally find a supplement that I've been taking for a few months now that is naturally based and I love it :) I can't think of the last time that I've had that i've had an episode with acid reflux or one of my terrible daily stomach aches, I also haven't been sick with a cold or anything 1 time since I've started my supplement. I hope you all find relief, it's amazing to feel better!

Hi everybody, I've been on medication for 20+ yrs and couldn't go 8 hrs without it. I'm going gluten free and found that most of my symptoms are tied to wheat products. No bread no pain. And that has made it easy to give it up. My goal for 2013 is to lose 50 lbs and go off the aciphex for good.

I am still trying to get control of MY acid reflux. I still take nexium and sometimes it helps and sometimes it doesn't. Last night, I had an acid reflux episode and the stuff went into my lungs and almost choked me to death. I had to cough like crazy to get the stuff out. It was horrible. I need help trying to take control of something that I never wanted to begin with. I was diagnosed with acid reflux almost 10 years ago and I STILL can't take control. The medicine helps sometimes, but I don't know what to do to take control of it on my own.
Sincerely,
Robby K. Harrisville, WV

I usually suffer from acid reflux when I've eaten to much sugar, drank to much fruit juices, or take any OTC pain medications.

I must try acv and honey. I am sick of taking Nexium all these years. I also find that an apple relieves my reflux. I am weaning myself off Nexium and use Gaviscon liquid if it realy gets unbearable.

not sure what starts it because since i have been on meds i have only had it a couple of times over the jpast two to three years. i tried to drink something when it happened but that did not work. one night i poped a jolly rancher thinking that sucking on it would help and you wont believe it, but it took it away. now i keep a bag of them in the fridge and have had to use them a couple more times since the first. i woiuld have never thought a piece of candy would stop the acid, but it does.

Overeating in the evening or eating certain foods in the evening. I can eat peanut butter or almonds in the morning, at noon or the afternoon. If I eat peanut butter of almonds in the evening when I go to bed, I will have an acid reflux episode.

Since beginning eating for my Gastroparises I have had very little reflux. If I eat the wrong thing or a little too much I am in trouble.

Before I was prescribed medication for my acid reflux everything had started to bother my neck. Now since I have been taking prilosec my neck does not bother me as much. Ramen noodle soup really gets to me.

My mother suggested cucumber when the burn starts and I tried that one night when I had nothing to make it stop. It worked. Worth a try, just a few slices, peeled is better for this than unpeeled but if it is 2 a.m. unpeeled is okay.
Too much bread will affect me but I am still trying to figure out what else does besides my weight gain .

I have a Barretts Esphagus which is pre-cancer. Absolutely no tomato products, chocolate, caffine, carbonation, spicy stuff and a few other things. I have a strong pill I take every morning and so far so good. It has been a year and I got my letter that it is time for another gastroscopy to check it out. Not thrilled about it but know it has to be done for the biopse so that it can be decreased in risk.

Spicy or tomato based foods, or if I eat to much at one time. I have graduated from just having Acid Reflux/Nexium to Esophagitis and now have to take 4 Protonix tablets a day because I had started throwing up blood instead of just acid. Turns out the acid was eating the lining of my esophagus (the doctor even gave me the pictures he took when he did an endoscope on me...but at least Barrett's Esophagus has been ruled out).

I take Apple Cider Vinegar mixed with Honey and Water everyday first thing in the morning no matter what...It really helps..
I do try and watch what I eat...It seem I can have spicy food more in the evening at dinner..
I do equal amounts of acv and honey...1 to 2 tablespoons to 16 oz of water.
I make sure I take 8 oz of water mixed with acv and honey in the morning and then I take the other 8 oz to work in case I need it..
This might help some. I was on generic prilosec for 3 1/2 years and decided to go off because of bad indigestion..That is completely gone as well as many other things the medication was doing like insomnia, depression, aches in arms and legs...

Ive read somewhere that eating an apple helps with immediate pain, tried it , it works for me! I love the natural effct! Also you might note yhat although omeprizole( or howener its spelled) eats away at your bones! I found this out when my mother went into rehab for spinal cord surgery, they took her off omeprizole and put her on zantac, which of course didnt work, because they said it wasnt good for her . she alread had severe osteoperosis, and this was her 2nd spinal cord surgery in a yr. but 3rd overall....its always something!

on vacation. I had a miserable evening after having orzo with my chicken at the restaurant last night. there were other things in the soup that could have added to the horrible bloating and reflux that stayed about 2 hrs. Wish I'd brought something besides the zantac.

I just took a teaspoon of Apple cider vinegar. I will see how the night goes. My Dr. has not returned any of my calls asking for medication change. I hope tomorrow to have results on the swallow test.

You know I've read an interesting article in regards to acid reflux I think maybe very interesting for all of you to read. I've been suffering from "Acid Reflux" and Constipation all of my life..( so I've been told). My Dr. always prescribed me anti-acid medication assuming it was acid reflux or GERD. I was in pain everyday, and I hated life. My confidence was low and I was gaining weight even when I was dieting/working-out (3 hours a day of intense swimming and insanity). I finally did some extensive research online.. and started to read about hydrochlorhydria. Hydrochlorhydria is the complete opposite of Acid Reflux Disease which include the SAME EXACT SYMPTOMS! Its a disease of LOW to NONE Acidity vs Acid Reflux is TOO MUCH Acidity. I decided to create a diet with moderate acidity with a much more healthier selection. Hypochlorhydria isnt a disease that is enforced to check by physicians... they automatically assume acid reflux even without an acid reflux exam. This is not right. I can tell you how to treat hypochlorhydria if you notice that acid reflux medication isn't working properly for you... but first I want you to take the hypochlorhydria exam @: altmedicine.about.com/library/weekly/bl_qu iz_hypochlorhydria.htm
Symptoms:
•Accelerated ageing because of malabsorption. •Wind, gas and bloating as foods are fermented instead of being digested, i.e. irritable bowel syndrome. •A tendency to allergies. The reason for this is that if foods are poorly digested then large antigenically interesting molecules get into the lower gut, where if the immune system reacts against them, that can switch on allergy. •Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD). [See also "Acid Stomach - or Not Enough Stomach Acid? The Symptoms are Similar, but For CFS and FMS Patients It's Often the Latter."] •Iron deficiency (anemia). •B12 deficiency. •A tendency to Candida dysbiosis or bacterial dysbiosis (Yeast Infections)
--------------Treatments-------------
Daily Supplements:
Betain HCL with 30-40mg Pepsin (To help break down your food properly to avoid food from pushing up (GERD)) *Powdered Large Capsules only 10grains/100grams per meal (could be up to 6-10 pills per meal, depending on the size of ur meal.. and until you feel the burning sensation of food breaking down in ur stomach)
Apple Cider Vinegar - 2 tablespoons per meal (Also, awesome for weight loss)
Everyday:
B12 with Folate - This is very crucial, because people who do not break down food properly with acid reflux or hyp0chlorydria do not get the proper nutrients from there food which can lead to worsens diseases... That's why most patients with either-or-diseases also include anemia.
Eat ur greens!!!!!!
Hope I've helped :)
-Megs.

I have had acid refles for many years till it got to the point I was in lots of pain. Went to the doctor and had to have the scope down the throat. They found the bottom of my stomach was real rare and called it pre-cancer. So I take a pill every morning and have lots of things I can not eat now. They made me rise my head of the bed by 6 inches. I am doing good but no when I eat something I shouldn't. The nos are - tomatoes, chocolates, onions, caffine, spicey things and carbination things. Citrus fruits are also forbidden. So really limited on all the good things I love to eat. But the big C word scares me enough to know I will behave. Lossing 30 pounds so far as also helped alot.

I was taking omeprozole (however you spell it LOL) and I felt like I had bugs crawling all over me. I checked out the side affects & itching, rashes, hives, etc. were one of the severe side affects, so I stopped using it. I took one yesterday because we were going for BBQ, just in case, & I still flared up. I just can't eat out anymore.

It has been a while. I had a piece of a chocolate cake, with chocolate icing, and I believe they called it an Oreo cake. One slim slicee. I was up all night, and sick as a dog. At 2:30 a.m. the reflux attack hit. I was miserable. I don't take anything for my acid, because it doesn't hit me because I watch what I eat.
Definetly fried foods. Eating spinach almost every day also helps with hunger pangs.

The things that trigger my acid reflux pain is fried, spicy, chip, and sugary foods.
Losing weight for me is not an option. It is something that must be done to keep my whole body balanced, for a longer and healthier life.
I don't get the Acid Reflux per say.....I get heartburn. I take Nexium every day, and have been for a while, and still occasionally, my heartburn flares up. I am gluten free now, since I know wheat is one of the main causes for my heartburn, but I haven't figured out what the other things are since they seem to randomly aggravate me...
