Stress. Eating too fast. Letting my stomach stay empty for long periods of time. Not being vertical when I do eat. Anything spicy (even Taco Hell is too spicy for me!). Lying down (I sleep in a recliner).

And then there's the who-knows-what-caused-it-this-time-s.
Mostly I don't feel my reflux. It's there, but I don't know it. Makes it hard to protect against.

they've forgotten we're really just animals ...

I just found something else that gives me reflux. I had some leftover roasted vegetables
and now have reflux. I will eliminate for a few weeks and check again to see if it still does
the same.

I have started cutting out coffee and might have one every three days and notice the difference.
My oat sourdough bread has helped me a lot. When I get burning, I toast some of this sourdough and it helps settle my stomach. I also keep Gaviscon handy for when it gets really bad.

Empty stomach. I tend to wait too long to eat in the morning and then it is a never ending battle to get ahead of the acid for the rest of the day

I wish I knew. There is no rhyme nor reason to it. One day I can eat berries, cantlope, oranges etc. Salsa, spicy foods and no problem then another day WHAM I am in bad shape. Like today!! It's been sneaking up on me for the past week and today is BAD! So I am nibbling on crackers and keeping the Gaviscon close by. Had to relent and start taking meds. But I know better days are ahead, I look forward to them.

Stress, chocolate, anything with tomatoes, anything spicy, and eating too much at once. I'm italian so the tomato one kills me!

Dairy seems to set me off. No GERD while strictly Paleo eating. Tried a cup of whole milk and had the worst GERD and nausea. Not fun at all. Seemed to give me symptoms for a couple of days. Been 4 days since the milk and finally feeling better.

Hi, I'm new to Sparkpeople. I take Prilosec for it but a few things trigger it beyond the meds. Water is a trigger for me. I'm so glad to hear it is for others. I can no longer eat spicy foods, orange juice, anything acid.

Neither one belong on a healthy plan for GERD or gastroparesis.

If I get myself into some digestive episode, my only relief is to "band-aid" it with sucralfate (Carafate™) until it passes.
I've had all the OTC meds, then all the Rx meds of the same families... and those all worked for a brief period of time and then quit. I was switched to AciPhex™ and bethanechol, which helped a lot and for much longer.
The symptoms have progressed lately, so the dosages have been doubled and I'm being sent to a higher level specialist to see what more can be done.
I *do NOT* want to hear the "surgery" word.

Would you believe water? along with fried food, tomatoes and coffee. With coffee it is the brand. Folgers seems to cause problems more then some others. I find that timing is also important, there are some foods I will only eat early in the day.

Definitely: tomatoes, onions, garlic, STRESS

After trying very hard to find ways to fit tomatoes, onions and garlic into my diet with out success, I have given up. In soups and recipes calling for onions, I will add dried chives with success.

Stress. Any kind of stress. Momentary stress, such as DH swearing while putting the blinds up. Long term stress also has an enduring effect, such as DS moving out of state and dealing with a substance abuse problem. For the stress I have started taking 5-HTP, which is a pre-cursor to melatonin. I take 200 mg after dinner. It seems to help me relax and sleep more in the night. I have fewer nigh-time acid reflux episodes.

Tomato sauce triggers it more than anything else! it sucks since I'm Italian and have grown up on lasagna, ravioli, manicotti, etc. Also greasy fatty foods, BBQ sauce, obviously ketchup, and sometimes spicy foods, it just depends on the day with those. Greek yogurt helps decrease it which is wonderful and so does sting cheese. I'll cry if cheese starts giving me problems with my GERD like JOANNEEMERALD. My heart goes out to you!

I have had GERD for about 7 years, and I too find that everything is a trigger, or so it seems. One very simple thing I've found is that black papper (which I love) is a big trigger. Taking pepper out of my dishes helps a lot. Thing is,I don't just cook for myself and we're a family that loves spicy foods. So, slowly, I'm gathering recipes that are healthy and tasty, but without pepper or other spices that cause my acid reflux.

As I've said before, acupuncture has strengthened my digestive system and helped me a great deal. I would rather that than take a bunch of pills every time pain hits.

I've suffered with GERD for about 20 years. Seems like everything is a trigger. I do see relief taking Prilosec OTC. I usually take it every 2-3 days and this helps. I still have to be care about eating and drinking before lying down and exercise.

I had ulcers so bad at one time and endoscopy was impossible. reflux at night that I was unaware of. I now have to take Prilosec morning and night. ulcers have healed but left scars which will remain with me forever. I make sure I take ;my pill morning and night.
I have to watch what I eat, no fried food at all, broiled, baked are ok. No heavy meals every at dinner. no food after 6 PM. No acidic foods at all. If I eat tomatoes it has to be for lunch not after that. Even with my medicine I still have to be careful.

Has anyone heard of prilosec giving you ulcers? My aunt started on prilosec 14 months ago after having an endoscopy. She had no ulcers at that time but this week she had another endoscopy test and learned that she is loaded with ulcers.

For me dairy triggers my GERD, yet at times it seems no matter what I eat I am triggered and then vomit for days.

I am a work in progress.

I hear you JIMJAN. I think that smaller portions is what is helping me not only with the weight loss but with the GERD.

sometimes eating too much of a good thing can affect you also...when 1/4 cup will do a full cup is way over board

I can't say I am a chocolate lover and must say
that it doesn't agree with me either, so that is a
good thing I suppose. I find that a wire bra cuts
into my sternum and makes me so uncomfortable
and can hardly breathe and then I get indigestion.
Have you ever experienced that?

Eggs also disagree with me and if I have not taken
my Nexium, watch out. Learning the triggers and
eliminating works for me and helps me find out
what to avoid.

bloating is one of those things that comes with acid reflux, I actually feel better at times if I start to belch a little as that relieves some of the pressure, very uncomfortable if I eat too fatty foods, or just plain over eat. have also found out that dark chocolate--one of my weaknesses can cause severs acid reflux if indulged in after 9 pm, usual result is vomiting--totally don't want to go there

I'm cutting out wheat for a bit and see if that is
what is causing the bloating.

GOANNA- great on the test results! Hope the polyps were removed. Maybe the bloating was caused by the tomato? I was told not to eat them. I think there's a way it can be determined whether you are gluten intolerant. The bloating could also be that they blow air into your system for the procedures. I was encouraged to fart after mine.

I just had a little ham, tomato and lettuce on a wholemeal bun
and feel so bloated. I guess the wheat is not good for me.
My endoscopy and colonsocopy were fine but was told they took
samples and I presume it was the polyps. Going back to my GP
next week for the results. I am feeling tired and sluggish lately...

a day off after both procedures is must--had rest day after mine--clear on endoscope--no problems in esophagus, colonoscopy just needs to be repeated every 5 years or so
just goofed, had whopper with husband for lunch--blew me out of water, don't usually get that sandwich--have to work a little harder today--and tomorrow--I guess once isn't going to get me down too much--next time I will get something else...that's for sure...acid reflux kicked up a little about hour after ingesting--not good sign

My body has gotten used to my waking hours. My doc says he would like to study my circadian rhythm-lol. It's the only way I can get my workout in. I hear you about being exhausted at the close of the day. I am the same way. Too bad Pirates B**ty doesn't aggravate my GERD. Ate too much last week, which resulted in a gain of 1.6 lbs. Back at it this morning and ready to face Monday. Have an awesome one folks!

Must be hard to have to get up so early. I have started
My walking again, but today was too cold. I did
Get up at 6.20 and walked to my circuit class for a
7 am start. It was really cold and didn't feel like getting
out of bed. Had less than 30 minutes to shower
And get to work by 8.45. Had an apple for Brent.
It is 7.30 pm and I am exhausted. These last 2 weeks
I cannot stay up very long. I am still getting a lot
Of reflux and the ear ache, but now that cough also.
I have to find my scripts. I put them away when I was
declutterring and now can't find them. Agh! I realise
That I need to be taking my meds.
Sounds like you have a good goal to get to Your goal

I'm planning to start my walking program today and am a little concerned about eating afterwards. Since I get up so early (start work at 4am) I need to go to sleep early and generally don't eat past two hours before I go to sleep. If I do I usually have a problem with the GERD. I know I will have to eat something after the walk. I guess I'll try to make the meal as low fat as possible and keep my fingers crossed....

On another one of my teams one of the members wrote about a height to waist measurement, where the target waist in inches is height in inches divided by 2. That would make my target waist 30.5", it's 38 now, used to be 42, so I have a goal to strive towards.

Did a body percent calculation based on Livestrong's formula, which uses the BMI. 49.414! Almost half of my body is fat! And I wonder why I have GERD? Poor food choices and lack of exercises have gotten me where I am. This was an eye opener for me and propelled me to do my workout this morning when I felt tired.

Hey Goanna, sounds like you had quite the hectic day! Bet you're relieved that the appointment is booked. Sometimes that's the hardest part. Hope you get some answers as well. Had nightmare days Tuesday and yesterday. Apparently it's my thyroid acting up, according to the blood work and my doc. Got myself to do my workout this morning, followed by some dumbbell work. Have an awesome day!

Booked my endoscopy/colonoscopy for September 2nd.
I hope to get some answers. I am tired today as I went to my
circuit class at 7, then straight to work till 1.45 and then on
to University for a 3 pm lecture and a tutorial at 4pm. Then
after I had to get two buses, got home at 6pm. emoticon
Came home absolutely knackered and my DS cooked an
omellette for me. Now I am on the PC and half asleep. Must
go to bed early.

Good luck in the trial. I hope they don't put you on a placebo. I've been taking Aleve and am almost pain free. Did a high intensity interval workout followed by some dumbbell work this morning. Have an awesome day!

I am taking part in a trial at the local University.
It is for knee pain and will be using green lipped
mussels in capsule form. it is for 12 weeks and
I am hoping it will work, although I am not sure if I
will be on that or the placebo. Interesting to see.
have to stay healthy for the next 12 weeks, lol...

Hi Goanna, congrats on your stats. Sorry you're dealing with GERD issues. I don't like the cough at all. Yes, it seems strange that September is just around the corner. Where has this year gone?
I'm still dealing with knee issues. Will call the orthopedic doc. It's been a year so maybe it's time...

Congratulations on losing that one pound. Good loss I think.
RUTHIET_456 Thank you for the good wishes. It's on the
2nd September. I hate feeling all this burning sensation
and earcahe that goes with it. Getting that horrible cough
back again and it's all from GERD. Not long to go now.
On the other hand, bone density was good, so was thyroid
and and cholesteroland blood pressure is spot on - 120/80.
Just keep uyp my walking and exercise and stay off as many
white carbs. especially sugar, as I can. Have a great day all...

Felt nauseous last evening. Was extremely active (walked over 13,000 steps in addition to my workout) and wasn't able to eat all morning because I was having blood work done. Surprisingly I did not throw up. The result is that today I am tired beyond belief and can barely bend my left knee (surgery 11/10 for torn meniscus and still having issues). Will focus on watching calories, walking and will do ab exercises after work. Have an awesome day everyone!

There's nothing like having the scale reward me after a hard week of exercising. I know I shouldn't focus on that, but it's been such a long struggle that I am relieved that this works. I lost 1 lb, which isn't much, but when I think that I burned/didn't eat 3550 calories, that puts it into perspective. My GERD is fine as long as I sleep with a wedge pillow, take my pills and don't eat greasy food. Have a great day everyone!

Hi! I was on Nexium for years, and it stopped working. I've tried just about every med that can be prescribed now.
I usually only have to bend over to pick up something, cough, or terribly enough, eat. After all the MD's medications, over the counter, Gaviscon, seems to work best for me. It forms like a heavy foam cover over the food, and keeps it from coming back up. Plus it tastes good to me.
Like a foamy pineapple taste.

@GOANNA2: good luck with the endoscopy/colonoscopy. I hope they find the cause of whatever is bothering you or give you a clean slate. Good for you for having a suggestion for your doc of a med that might work for you.

I think the Nexium doesn't work any more as my body has
gotten so used to it. I asked him to change me to Pariette.
At least with this one I can get 5 repeats whereas only 1
repeat for the Nexium. I am going to have an endoscopy /
colonoscopy in a few weeks. Already hating the stuff I have to drink..

I had a small portion of the innards of a wrap, didn't have the bread, and I was ok. I think small portions is the key. I take Prilosec and Sucralfate for my GERD. They seem to be pretty effective.

I never have pain, only cough. That's why it so long for me to get a diagnosis.

I haven't heard of that one, but I am not up on them medicines any more. I know both my parents took medicines for heartburn for years and then was put on prescription meds too. They all seemed to work for them for a little bit and then it seemed that their bodies got use to the meds and then they didn't work so well for them so they had to switch off and on to different ones a lot.
