Welcome James! When I joined this group back in 2007, I was a few months shy of 50 and the leaders then had no issues, so I've continued in that spirit since I became leader.

I am a little under the wire on 50, but turn in Sep. 40 something group didn't seem like the place to be any more. Hey SSG, Rule #1 works for me. If you think I should wait until I role on over, let me know. I don't think I have been on here much since Iraq. It's a great go to for Knowledge on diet though, and the people on this site have always been kind and helpful. I started my diet a few weeks ago. I tend to do better on mostly Atkins, with a break on a weekend day. I am down to 208 from 221 where I started. so it's working, again. Let me know if I can help with anything. Sgt. Gerlach, MSARNG

Jim, under "General Team Discussion Forum", there are a bunch of different topics applicable to exercise, eating, etc. Use those as appropriate. This particular topic, "Rules of 50+ Males", was created for the sole purpose of spelling out the rules for being on this team, namely that it is for guys only, and any women who joined were asked nicely to unjoin, since the vast majority of teams are geared towards women. Plus, I found a few women were joining to check up on their guys, and I don't tolerate "spying"!

I believe I have read that there is scientific evidence to support men being able to lose weight faster than women. Having said that, I just see far too many women on some of the the other teams trot that "excuse" out anytime the scale does not cooperate. And yet I'll see some of these women blog about how they went to the local all you can eat buffet or eat a bag of chips late at night, etc etc, but they don't connect that with the scale not doing what they want!

It's all about honesty and accountability, and I just happen to think we guys are better at that, maybe because we don't get as hung up about our looks or trying to be competitive about looks.

Just my 2 cents on the subject....

Maybe they are looking for a reason for the stagnation of their efforts. Losing weight is tough on us all. Being older doesn't help either. Living with certain conditions also may not lend itself to success in the arena. Keep up the exercise component. I don't think exercising is easier for you than your spouse. You just have to do it.

I'd love to know why people always say it's easier for men to lose weight than women. I don't understand that. The fact is, as a man, it's pretty tough to lose weight. My wife and I are both on the same diet, but she is not exercising and I am. I've lost a little more weight than her, but not when you look at percentage of body weight. So, why do they always say it's easier for men?

Just reading over this string of posts and saw the request for help with fingernails. Last year in April, I became a vegetarian. I do the cooking in my family. I used to be quite hooked on hamburgers and cheesebugers. I even had myself convinced that the mushroom and swiss burger was healthy. Anyway, I lost about ten pounds on this diet, my fingernails improved, my dental hygeinist was noticing that my gums had improved. They can measure how healthy they are with a number. My numbers kept getting better, and my gums were tighter. My cholesterol dropped to 143, triglycerides went way out of the high zone for the first time in years. We only stayed vegetarians for 8 months, but since that time I still have not had a single burger, and many of the meals I prepare and eat out are meatless.

People worry about getting their protein if they were to quit eating meat. There are many sources of vegetable protein, but just eating a variety seems to take care of it. As you know, we are a protein obsessed culture. Now if I could only get away from cheese and potato chips, I would probably lose some more weight, and help my numbers a little more.

I would say the biggest drawback to being vegetarian is preparation time and cleanup.

There are a # of teams devoted to weight loss surgery. Since I had lapband surgery, the one I am active on is the Lap Banders. There is a Weight Loss Surgery team as well, but it is not as active. Finally, I heard of one for gastric bypass, so if that is the surgery you are considering, that team name I believe is "Gastric Bypass Sparklers Team".

As I said before, I don't advocate weight loss surgery for everyone, but for me, it was the right decision and my life has changed for the better. Feel free to send me a SparkMail if you want to chat 1x1 on the subject.

Thanks PLMITCH I am also gearing up for weight loss surgery. I have an odd lung issue that the docs are want to operate on but will not do so until I lose 50 pounds. If I lose 100 I may negate the need for the surgery. Sounds like motivation to me. I've started measuring everything. When I started exercising I could not walk more than 1/4 mile. I am now up to 1.3 miles. That is 4 laps of the local WalMart. Living in small town Alaska it allows me a warm, bright ice free place to walk. My daughter walks with me and even reminds me that I might have skipped a day or two. The WalMart employees know me and wave encouragement. I've even had one join me on her break saying she needs to walk more. Leading by example is probably the best policy. Thanks!

MMCBRIDE88, this may be one of the toughest situations to be in. My two cents:

- Lead by example, exercise edition. While it would be ideal if your wife would jump off the couch and join in, it likely is not going to happen, at least not initially. Don't let that deter you. Do what you are doing, do more, get results and see if she notices.
- Be selfish. OK, normally this is not a good thing in a relationship, but you HAVE to take care of yourself! Develop your plan, stick to it, and absolutely, positively do not let her sabotage them.
- Lead by example, food edition. Exercise is important, but so is food, and maybe even more so. I learned this the hard way. I have exercised vigorously for a number of years, but I made the mistake of assuming I could eat and drink as much as I wanted. Or when I did track what I was eating and drinking, I eyeballed most of my portions and really had no clue just how much food I was REALLY eating. Fast forward to nearly 5 months ago, as I was preparing for my weight loss surgery, I was on a 1000 calorie prep diet the week before surgery. I was so scared that I'd be starving, but knowing post-surgery I'd be measuring most of my foods, I used that week to learn how to measure my intake. Shockingly, I did not starve, and to this day I measure all of my foods at home, and have gotten a much keener eye for portions when I am out. In most cases, I bring home 1/2 or more of my dinners when I eat out.
I'm not advocating weight loss surgery, but I AM advocating measuring your food. Get a good food scale and try it. Your wife may wonder what is up, but I think you'll find over time that this will help.
Also, get more good foods (fruits/veggies, complex carbs, proteins) into your diet.

Dreaded relationship type of question: I have to lose 100 pounds and have set a goal of doing so in 1 year. My daughter is stepping up to start walking with me, doing some exercise and eating a better diet. My wife refuses. She outweighs me. Does not work oustide the house. She is at her moms for 2 months and my daughter and I have changed things up already. How do we get my wife to buy in when she gets back? My goal is to get old with this lady. We've been married 25 years and I want another 25+ with her. To do that, she has to get off the couch, put the pepsi down and move just a bit. How do I do that in a way that motivates and not irritates?

Hello all. I am new here, new to Spark and new to my 50s (but I do qualify, according to my driver's license and my teenage kids - who think I am hopelessly old).

I track my supplements, every one of them. I input all my foods manually, and include all the amino acid complexes if they are listed on the package. I figured it is a good thing to do along with foods, to see what % I am intaking... plus if Doc asks I can print it out too.

I am not concern too much on nails as to keeping healthier then I was. I read articles on the topic it can be as simple as nutrition or complex as your own heredity. You can always ask your doctor's office. Mine was lack of good nutrition and sedentary lifestyle.
This dog use to sit and sit from the desk chair to couch to car seat , bar seat , picnic table seat, to bathroom seat, we all sit allot. It gets easy as I get older. Then the curse of pants shirts and movie seats that feel uncomfortable. Even eating out and sitting at a booth , the gut would touch the edge of the table. Wearing suspenders to keep the pants from falling of south of the border. As I use to laugh and stuff my mouth with what ever and now I say what the hell. The food I watch what I order and half goes in a box. I bring this word up continually , because it is true, Temptation, avoid it go round it as best as you can. If it is the bad choice food don't buy it , smell it or what ever. Remember change is from within and the action taken. Yea hm not really a nail biting topic. Have a great american day.

If you find out anything I would love to hear it. My two index fingers, for many years, have had really ragged nails. I trim them carefully but the never grow back properly or even. I have haunted the literature and found nothing to explain why only these two nails do this. They are otherwise normal, not thickened or yellowed or anything.

I will when pigs...[oink,flap,oink,flap]...Well, I'll be damned!

Hey clarkbar01--it is good to hear from an old dog. I just hit my 60th. I'm tuned into what you are saying, I am in month 2 and finding success along the lines you posted about. I will keep your observations in mind as I try some new tricks!

hey keep going and be committed to change the inside to effect the outside results. I am on maintaining. I change my weights often, to challenge my mind and body to keep them from adjusting to my routine. So be creative, throw in High intensity in a couple days a week , it seem to rev up the metabolism most of the time. That's was when I was in losing mode.
Second part need help to adjust calories and at what level. I am losing weight without trying. I am eating 2000-2400 and losing a pound a week recently. It seems my metabolism has woken up. So do eat at the same level every day or on days that are less active eat less.
Hey know body knows for certain . This is crazy trying to gain weight to stay a goal. This old dog is 58.

yeah, CHris,

I have some weights & I've used them, they are great, in fact just putting them on and wearing around the house is pretty cool, I can really feel the extra effort needed to do Anything. ..

I suggest to buy the kind that you can load or remove sections, usually in 1/2 lb increments, so you can adjust for different situations or workouts, ..
[and of course, start easy and increase thoughtfully]

and watch out for the swing momentum ..
I found I had to adjust the speed of my cadence and be careful turning, etc ..
my hips and knees could feel the different angular stress of the weight out at the end of my legs ..

Thanks, it is not a big deal for me. And the better way is to focus on the foods that bring me in line with the nutritional requirements. I have taken supplements for years, even sold them. I have come to find out that it is much cheaper to eat the right stuff and when buying supplements, the generic ones are usually just as good. I know this kind of comment can raise hackles, "I'm just sayin' . . ." Ya' know?

I don't track them -- but I do take them! I'll have to look to see if they are preloaded or if they would have to be manually entered. Would be interesting to see how many calories they add....

I take a 50+ male multi-vitamin, an Omega-3 fish oil tab, a joint flex compound, and CLA oil tabs (Conjugated Lineolic Acid for fat-burn). But the actual supplements may vary. I am more interested if any of you guys are tracking supplements as a habit, regardless of the specific supplement.

Yeah! I would like to know the same thing. I show low levels for some nutrients in my reports and I wonder if I can "supplement" my stats.

Alright guys....a question for you. I have now been tracking my nutrition pretty regularly for a bout 3 months. I was thinking about adding my nutritional supplements into my SP tracking along with the traditional "foods" that make up my intake.

Is there anyone else out there that tracks supplements as well as food? And, is it recommended and why/why not?

OK, I have to admit that I joined because of the angry Clint Eastwood picture. AND, I like the rules. I am almost the 60+ guy. I'm also new to this drill. I still wear a white t-shirt under my regular shirt--a practice my grandson says is making a comeback. But I also call underwear skivvies, both habits of my time in the Navy. I became a sailor because I was about to be drafted. A box of welding rods weighs fifty pounds, and I'm getting tired of carrying that around just over my belt. I'm leaving a link only because it describes me, I am completely retired and not interested in anything complicated.

The other issue, and frankly the reason for the rules, is that we had women joining for what appeared to be the sole purpose of checking up on their guys! I've tried to keep a close eye on who joins, and when it is obvious it is a woman I send them an e-mail and politely ask them to remove themselves from the team. In only two cases have I had to resort to asking the SP admins to forceably remove a woman, and it was not pretty!
