Checking in on a rather cold Sunday. Got outside to do a chore that I hadn't been able to get to, despite my unstated plan to be a sloth. Amazing what happens when I actually start moving.

I'm trying to enjoy this nice weather before the big storm Wednesday! My spring clothes are screaming at me to be busted out, along with pretty shoes!! To top it off, skunks have eaten most of the bulbs I planted last fall, so no crocus or hyacinth to look forward to. I've been told to sprinkle human hair and mothballs, but any other suggestions are welcome!

ANN---you and I are playing 'tag' on a couple of these teams!! emoticon

I took care of my mom for eleven years in our home. It was an experience--an adventure-- that brought us very close. I am so glad you are there for your dad. Your focus was where it needed to be and now you can give yourself a bit more attention. Life goes on and so do we.
Love and, of course, emoticon .

Life has been busy for me, so coming and visiting our team has been hard to do. I think I was away so long I forgot the name of our community. I was typing "SmartPeople.com". (I guess I was having a Senior moment.) Oh, well, I had it right anyway. We are a group of "Smart" people who have joined together to get healthier. My ticker has not moved for awhile. I decided to wait another week before I weighed. I didn't do well with my healthy eating the week I was sitting with my Dad, so I am giving it another week so that I WILL be able to move my ticker in the right direction.

"Congratulations" to all who have kicked a pound or two to the curb..... or maintained. Maintaining is an accomplishment, too. "Don"t give up" to all who may have found a pound or
two they thought they had lost for good. We are all worth the work it takes to be healthy, so keep on, keeping on!!

On another SP team I belong to we have a thread that is titled, "One Pound At A Time". Reading all the comments my fellow team members have made on this subject has convinced me that I need to change my way of thinking.....Always when I started trying to lose weight, one pound a week was not enough for me. Even two pounds left me feeling OK, but not excited. I wanted more...... I know, now, I was setting myself up to fail. The disappointment in not losing "more" discouraged me...... it made me feel like a failure. I would get discouraged with myself and give up, saying I can't do it.... One pound a week should make me feel like a winner. Those one pounds add up to 10, 20, 30 pounds. As long as the scales are moving in the right direction, I am a winner. The weeks I just maintain, I am a winner. The weeks I may gain a pound, I am still a winner as long as I don't give up and quit. Looking at my healthy living journey this way assures me I will reach my goal, maybe not as fast as my unrealistic thinking wanted me to, but as each day and each week passes I will be closer. The way I think has a lot to do with my success in losing weight. I will try to picture myself a winner, one pound at a time......

emoticon , PFERG66 & SWEETPEA, for the kind and encouraging words. Knowing I have teammates who care and want me to be successful on my healthy living journey really does help motivate me. I have dusted my pants off from falling of my wagon, crawled back up on the seat, and beginning to move again. I refuse to give up, like I have done so many times before. I remember the saying, "you never fail until you stop trying". I am going to keep working on being healthier and eventually I will reach my goal.

I have not been able to visit the team often this past week. I hope your all keeping the "Spark". Remember we are all worth the hard work it will take to reach our goals. Food only taste good the short time it takes to eat it. Reaching our goals is something we can enjoy 24/7.

Hello, to everyone. I hope all of you still have your SPARK! Mine is hanging on with a flicker. I have been sitting at the hospital with my Daddy for almost a week. It is always hard to make healthy choices when your tired, stressed, bored, and especially not home. Now that I've mentioned my excuses I will say I COULD HAVE made healthy choices. I just didn't. That's why I'm overweight. On another team I read we make wrong choices because we don't want to lose weight bad enough. I don't know..... just don't know. I do know I am not giving up.

It's bitterly cold - find myself moving a LOT faster than I thought I could just to get out of it sooner. Oddly, it also keeps me motivated to start the day with exercise; so I can be warm for part of it, anyway.

to you, NANNY2FOUR-ANN ! (did I get your 'handle' right?)

I get so excited every time I see someone replying.
Today's milestone was a day-long total of 40 minutes of exercise. That was all the stuff I did 10 minutes at a go.

I like your reminder about changing up the calories within your range. Good point.

I was soooooo glad to see this thread. "THANK YOU" PFERG66 for starting it. I am also looking forward to taking this healthy living journey with all of you. We all have something in common, we are new to SP and we know how being new feels. I am still stumbling along trying to find my way around the community, so like I said before, if you see someone walking around looking lost, it's me!.. emoticon .. I have learned so much reading all there is to read; the articles, the blogs, the success stories. I know that if the people I read about can be successful WE CAN, TOO! I'm doing pretty good on my nutrition, but I can improve on the fitness part. I keep reminding myself that this is a way of life I am working on, I will not start out 100% perfect, and I am sure I will never be 100% perfect. Even healthy people have a day here and there when they eat off plan, or days they are to tired to take a walk/run. The only thing that matters is the good days out number the bad, BY ALOT, and then the good days will win....... I did have 4 days of company in my home weekend before last and found myself hanging onto my healthy living wagon for dear life. I didn't fall off the wagon, so that was a big accomplishment. In the past I would have eaten 100% off plan, and tell myself I would start again when everyone left. I think I need to get out the duct tape when company comes and tape my "butt" to the seat!! I look forward to taking this journey with all of you wonderful "Sparklers". When 2015 rolls in, it will find us healthy, and excited we stayed with the goals we made for an entire year..... emoticon , TOGETHER!!!!
(I'm sorry I wrote a book....lol )

PFERG66 - I also think about the fast food, and even food at home that I use to eat, and I KNOW why I am overweight. I so was not eating healthy! ... I'm sorry you have already received a visit from Mr. Plateau. I know you have read articles on it. One thing I do that I have read a lot about, but not on SP, is every few days I switch up on calories and TRY to do different on the exercise. If I have been eating at the higher end of my calorie range, I eat at the lower end for a few day. If I have been eating at the lower end of the range, I eat at the higher end for a few days. I've read where people have done this and they say it helps. I heard a Weight Watcher instructer talk about this............. "Thank You", again, for starting this thread. I hope we can see more of our classmates check in and we can keep this team going. It's nice having somewhere to go that all the people are just starting out on SP, and know how you feel.

SUZKEE - One pound is AWESOME! As I know you have heard, we put it on one pound at a time and we can take it off one pound at a time, although I know you will have weeks that you lose more than one pound. We just have to take it day by day, one pound at a time, and when 2015 gets here we will be a lot healthier.

CFPUNKIN - GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENTS! Way to go on all the steps and exercise you have been doing. I still look at exercise as the dreaded "E" word. I know I have to change my way of thinking so I can be successful on this journey...... especially since I don't have a thyroid. I can lose the weight but I have to exercise to do it. Keep setting the example because it motivates me!

TOROP21 - I love your determination! I also love that thought: "My body will stop fighting me; my will is too strong". I agree. We just have to make our minds up that no matter what we will stick to our healthy living journey. It may be slow, but the scales will move on down.

I know that diabetes isn't a death sentence but I watched my Mother struggle with it for 40 years and if there is some way of not developing it on top of my fibromyalgia and colitis I want to try it.I am hoping I can stay motivated to lose the weight and keep it off! Thank goodness I found the Spark!

I hit a plateau in the second week for about a week but then I started losing pretty regularly this week again. I didn't lose anything from yesterday but my water intake was pretty low. I only had a moment of disappointment during my stall but I just pressed on. I figure at some point my body has to stop fighting me. My will is too strong.

At some point, my body has to stop fighting me. My will is too strong.

I'm a type 1 brittle diabetic which means anything can set me off on to a high blood sugar or a low. I'm learning how to set my pump so I can exercise better and the SparkPeople diets have kept my highs just about gone. The only time I go high now is when I have a pump glitch.
Diabetes is not a death sentence. It's just a bigger bump in the road of life.

Yep, I hit a "plateau" but my weight differnetial is still on the side of the angels. I've found it helpful to concentrate on non-scale victories instead. My body's definitely changed shape (who knew you could SEE muscle!), my stamina is better, I've doubled the typical number of steps I get in in a day, I manage to fit in exercise on most days, and - best of all - my pre-breakfast blood glucose has maintained a solid downward trend - and I finally broke the barrier between "OK" and "Danger". A reason to celebrate as it beats the scale for the number of positive consequences.

Suzkee - Diabetes isn't a death sentence, but it is something to take seriously. I've watched as my mother and 2 sisters both lost vision and feelings in their feet and hands, partly because they didn't control their diabetes. I also saw my father in law make the changes needed to control his diabetes, which also helped him stay active despite a congenital heart condition.

I too hit a plateau on my 2nd week, but finally lost another pound this weigh in. I figure it is going to take a while to get the weight off since it has been with me for so long. It is so hard to stay positive, but I've got to do this so I don't develop diabetes, which scares me no end.So fellow travelers lets keep buoying each other up! It helps to read some of the success stories and hope to one day be a part of their awesomeness.I am proud that I have taken the first step on this journey. We should give ourselves a pat on the back.

I offer a challenge to all of this class who joined week of 1/5-1/11:

Check in here even if you are having trouble, have a sense of overwhelm, or you are moving right along with the program. Please?

I am learning, learning, learning so much. Here's the thing, though; I have the time to do it.
What about you guys out there who don't?

I am following my program but have lost just four pounds and that was right away. Anyone else already on a 'plateau'??

Let's support each other!
To ANN--you are awesome to be caring for your parents. That is a huge thing. Whenever I think about fast food now, all I see in my head are the nutrition values whirling around!! Kid's menu anyone?
