emoticon Hi Renee, welcome! I won't say I'm an expert but my daughter has been on SCD for just over 2 years now so if you have any questions, I can try to answer them for you or point into any direction. I see what it has done for my little girl, so it will be hard, and will require more prep work but so worth it.

Hi Debbie! I am preparing my foods today to begin SCD tomorrow. I have also read the books and made an attempt in June but failed miserably. Part of it was being unsure and not sticking to my goals. Part was so much going on at that time.

Now things have quieted down and I am determined to work at it this time. Everything I have read so far seems that SCD is the baby step to Paleo. I have already gotten a couple of books on Paleo that I can read in the meantime.

I am planning on this going well for me this time and hope it is doing the same for you.

I thought there would be more people here too to help encourage and answer questions.

I am on this group to better understand the situation of a very close friend. He is currently on SCD which has helped him a lot. After 2 years of various diagnoses of IBS, diverticulitis, nothing and now Crohn's and losing 60 lbs without trying, SCD is the only thing that has helped him so far except for a temporary relief received after taking antibiotics when the doc thought he was treating diverticulitis which later was determined to be untrue. He also has sore ribs and bouts of eye issues and osteoarthritis. I have never heard of gaps but I will read about it. I have read BTVC book and the website and I am amazed that there is not more out on this so people can at least take a closer look to see if it might help them. It's not like it is whacky food.
Thanks for sharing everyone.

I think I'm one of the only people whose not on Facebook, and I was so glad to come across this group. I know it's a small group and pretty quiet, but at least it's a group that understands that foods can affect your health. I hope this group doesn't get shutdown.

here is a short synopsis.(hmm "short" synopsis... is that redundant?!)

The Gut and Psychology Syndrome Diet has its foundation on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) created by Dr. Sidney Valentine Haas to heal digestive disorders. SCD gained great popularity after a mother, Elaine Gottschall, healed her own child and became an advocate for SCD. Elaine Gottschall is also the author of the popular book Breaking the Vicious Cycle. Intestinal Health Through Diet.

Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride has taken SCD and evolved it further to create a full protocol for healing digestive disorders and subsequent issues.

Basically it starts with SCD with only a few minor tweaks. She allows cocoa powder and cocoa butter in the last stage so I'm still using unsweetened chocolate that I sweeten with honey. I know I need to pull back on the honey though because I'm still struggling with candida. The other major difference is the use of probiotics and probiotic foods. They whole point of the diet is to repopulate the gut with the good bacteria and keep the baddies under control.

I understand. But if you see someone who MAY be seeking, private message them. that way you won't be on the DELETE radar! I have seen the bad end of this, and I would MISS your expertise!

I know. And you're right! I have trouble only "preaching to the choir", tho. Those of us on these "alternate forums" already have great info and experience. It just pains me miserably to see others honestly looking for answers, or even just exploring ideas they've heard... and not be able to offer an opinion. I'm not evangelizing! But I know it creates havoc and furor out there. I try to control myself. Really.

I have to try *harder*!

Vicki, that is why I said in the past, just stay with your teams and stay out of the limelight. They won't mess with you if you keep to your own. It is when you branch out they are threatened. I don't want you to be banned, you contribute so much! emoticon

Yeah - except I hate FB and won't go there.

I'm so discouraged by the SP perspective of ANYthing low-carb. They tolerate so many other viewpoints... but just let a LCer get out on the open forums... well. You see how it goes. They can promote quacky snake-oil-salesman Dr Oz all they like out there, and that's fine!

Go figure.

Oh and you might be able to find a much more active group on FB. (especially if this one gets shut down.) I am in a group titled "GAPS Diet for Families" and it is 2,000+ members!

Thanks for responding to my thread! I had not searched for SCD since I'm on GAPS but they overlap for the most part so I'm glad to find "y'all".

I was quite floored by the nutritionist's response. Sure, I wouldn't expect SP to promote this lifestyle in their articles etc but from what I had observed in the past, there are groups of all kinds and I thought they would be able to function with no issues. The only issue I had was a group that I started with a specific name and typing out the curriculum (that was my mistake!) so the publishers ratted me out and I was forced to close the group. They were gracious to give me notice so I was able to make a more generic group and transfer the team over.

Someone was enquiring about GAPs and SCD out on the open forums... our favorite dietitian responded that SP doesn't support diets not grounded in the usual SAD (it wasn't worded exactly that way, but that was the gist).

I came behind and said this forum exists, at least.
Just thought others might like a bit of forewarning.

Who knows what might ensue - although, knowing the level of tolerance for LC on SP in general... well...
