I have a private office so I keep a yoga mat and sometimes I close the door and stretch some. I also invested in a pedometer so I can see how much the walking around the building adds up!

I work in an office where email and IM are encouraged. We also have no cubicle walls so exercise of any type would draw attention. The one plus is that we are on the second floor so I can climb steps on my break. Also, when it warms up (I live in MN) I'll be able to walk at lunch time.

I spend a lot of time at my desk too. Fortunately the files are in a cabinet that is a few steps away. Instead of bending at the waist to reach into the bottom drawers, I do squats. One file in or out of the bottom two drawers = 1 squat. I do have one file drawer that I need to file documents into as each one is processed. I have moved my key board into a far reach from it so that I get a good stretch. My in box is as far away from me as I can get it in the opposite direction. Stapler and paper is a stretch upward and in another direction. Even my calculator is a small stretch behind me from my key board. I spend the whole day twisting my core. The fax, washroom, and supply closet are all down the hall from me. So I can always think of an excuse to get up and walk a little to stretch the legs.

I'm doing a 30-day challenge that includes squats, inclined push-ups, crunches, leg raises and planks. I can do the squats and inclined push ups (I use my desk to push off of) in the office easily since I have a private office, and I'll even do the planks here. I save the crunches and leg raises for home since I don't really want to lay on the floor here in my work clothes!

They do have these things to hold stability balls to make it into a chair.

At my previous job, I spent my lunch time with a coworker. We would take 15-30mintues to eat and then we would go outside and walk around the building. We did not do this when it got too cold, but I never thought about it as working out during the day. I looked at it as time with my coworker/friend without the other people able to hear us.
I do 10-15minutes worth of little exercises in my office, but I am also typically alone in my office. My work has 5 people (and occasionally 6) but its a small area of a larger business building. No one besides my coworkers even know I work out in here, and a one of my coworkers also works out in his office.
My office is the furthest from the water cooler, and I have been getting in 8+ cups of water per day (my glass holds around 2 cups of water)

I like the under the desk pedal idea. Whether I am standing or sitting, I fidget. I do not like to sit still. Maybe having something like a pedal machine under my desk will help me focus on a certain movement instead of random movement.

Another thing I read is that just standing a few more hours during the day makes you spend a lot more calories. I do not have a standing desk, but I do go to coworker offices to talk to them. If I am on the phone and I do not need to be bending down to type, I will stand while I talk on the phone.

If I am watching a video for work, I might stand and watch, or do some kind of exercise that doesn't require head moving (like leg lifts in a chair).

I'm tied to a desk also. I made a "to-do" fitness worksheet that I put on my desk every morning. On the left side I wrote down a bunch of exercises I could do during business hours...mainly ST and made room for a few cardio items. On the right side at the top of the page I keep a tally of how much water I drink during the day. I also have room to log my food and snacks..if any. Once home I log on spark and track it all.

Examples I use:

Lat raises
dumbbell shrugs
seated overhead shoulder press
alt bicep curls
seated tricep extensions
seated leg extentions
seated knee lifts
side bends
calf raises (standing at the copier)
hip flexor
hip flexor with extension
standing leg abduction
standing leg adduction
seated butt crunches
squats
lunges
lateral lunges
neck stretch
hip stretch
rag doll stretch

cardio

step ups (I go to the stairwell)
jumping jacks (I do these one time after a bathroom break and the next time I do squats)
power walk (whenever you are walking...squeeze your glutes. Think of a sponge and you are squeezing every drop of water you can out of it. Squeeze and release. I swear this move really works and tightens up your rearview. I swear by it!

I also keep a medium size kids ball in my desk drawer. (About the size of a dodge ball). I place the ball between my knees and squeeze as long as I can then slowly release. I do that repeatedly until I can't anymore. Works the inner thighs.

Hope these ideas help. I'm on the lookout for new ideas as well.. emoticon emoticon

When I was tethered to my desk, I used to use my breaks to walk around the building. Also, when it was quieter in the evenings, we would do some yoga poses.

Now, whenever I have a question I walk to that person's office instead of messaging them or calling them.

I totally feel glued to my chair, guilty if I get up and move. :( I need to go over it. That's actually why I'm checking the boards now. Looking for fresh ways to sneak movement in.

The reality is that I should feel no guilt for moving throughout the day. I have given 10 plus years of loyal, underpaid service to my employer. What this has taught me; is that no matter how much I do for the employer, they are but an abstract entity and at the end of the day do not care about me or my health regardless of how well I take came of them. Therefore, I should value and be more loyal to myself and move my booty!

I drink a lot of water, so I'm typically going to the bathroom about once an hour. However, if I get up to just move around, I feel guilty because I'm not actually being productive. Does anyone else feel that way? It may be because I'm relatively new to my job, so I don't want to stir the waters.

I was using a program called Fitbolt for a while, that gives me stretches throughout the day. But I need to remember to A) turn it on and B) not ignore it. It has some pretty decent activities, though if I wasn't alone in the office, I'm not sure I would do some of them.

I hate sitting all day long. I get up and walk around as much as i can. I didn't think about getting a stability ball...thats a heck of an idea, i just might try that! I take the stairs to get my ice or tea & i walk 30 mins of my lunch a few days a week. Now that the weather is getting cooler, i will be going more often. I have also thought about buying 5 or 10 lb hand weights and working with them at my desk!

I also work in a call center and have found that sitting in different yoga poses help a lot. On my breaks I take walks around the building so that I can keep moving. I am really thinking about changing out my office chair for a stability ball. I like the bathroom workout ideas so i am going to start adding them tomorrow.

I do lots of stretching at my desk, and I drink a lot of water, which means going to the 1st floor (my office is on the 3rd) for refills. The restroom is on the 2nd floor, so I tend to be up and down the stairs pretty often! Has anyone tried replacing their desk chair with a large exercise ball? I've heard that it works great for improving your core, but haven't tried it yet!

I get up pretty often, especially with all the water I drink! Our office area has two entrances. So when I need to go to the ladies rom, I walk out the door closest to me, walk up to the next floor, walk down the hallway and back to my floor and my desk. I will take the longest way to get somewhere and I ALWAYS walk up the stairs in the morning and at lunch.

I haven't done a great job at using my desk wisely but I get up and walk around the office pretty often (I get antsy sitting too long) and go up and down the stairs a lot. I have a walking buddy at work and we take a morning break to walk a mile every day. Without her I'd have never started that but it makes a bit difference in how I feel for the rest of the day!

I am so glad I'm not the only one who "works out" in the restroom. emoticon

I've been doing this for ages, since I hate people watching and judging me exercising in the office. I'm also trying to use the standing desk more (we have ones where you can change it from sitting to standing, so you don't need any additional boxes or anything to change it) so I don't sit all day. I also keep my water in the kitchen, so everytime I need to refill my glass I have to walk all the way there, and I never use skype or emails to communicate with my co-workers, I always walk to their offices.

hey, JIMINY. i have one of those peddlers, but i just haven't brought it to work. it doesn't have any tension, but i think just the motion would help me relax. i got mine off Amazon.com. don't remember the cost, but it wasn't expensive. hence, the no tension. LMAO

I should try the squats too. Sounds weird but I hate doing any exercises while someone could be watching. At least in the bathroom I'd have some privacy! I used to do side lunges back when I pumped milk on my breaks (such a boring task). Don't spend nearly that much time in the restroom these days. lol

Oh the bathroom squats are a perfect idea! I think if I did 10 every time I went to the bathroom I would definitely end up doing up to 50 squats a day! What a genius idea!

I do something much smaller which is I do 'ankle circles' while I'm sitting at my desk. I don't know if that's the real word for it, but I basically just twist my ankles around in circles. It keeps my blood flowing around so when I get up I don't feel too lethargic.

A friend of mine wears ankle weights to work which also sounds like a very good way to tone up!

Has anyone ever tried those 'under the desk' cycles? It's basically a peddler you can use while you sit at a desk. It sounds like a good idea but I wonder if they are noisy?
