Chris ~ you could start a list from your building, to see ho many would be interested in starting a community garden. You might be surprised how many would be interested.
Do not be discouraged, I started my list with only 3 names.

With in a month of leaving the list tacked on our bulletin board, the list grew to 15 names. After pestering city hall for 3 years, I contacted the Okanagan Community Gardens Society, when they became involved it all fell into place.

People in my building voted by majority vote to fire the gardeners that were spraying chemicals, every where. Then counsel hired another garden contractor, that uses no pesticides.

Looking out my window on an early spring mourning, last year a deer and two fawns, trotted down the road by the garden. i was shocked as they were headed for the busiest road in the city by two blocks. I think they must have been in search of water, they were certainly on the right direction to Okanagan Lake. I just wonder to this day, did they find their watering hole?

Ann, the community garden sounds fantastic. I wish our condo would lo organic landscaping. They have a service that sprays chemicals everywhere. Supposedly easier. But we are near the "country" area of town and it would not hurt to have things more relaxed--and healthier--here. I am afraid to plant any food items here, though buying from the grocery store probably is no healthier.

I do love gardening. I started doing that in high school. NOw I just have small plots of flowers out front.

Our community garden has two plots, designated for our local food bank. We grow mostly vegetables that are the easiest to survive transportation. Several gardeners volunteer each year to tend to the plots.

We also have a volunteer list, for people whom are willing to tend to plots, if the regular gardeners are absent such as for a vacation. A gardener will post the days they will be away. Volunteers sign up for this extra duty at the beginning of each new garden season.

One year we had a marmot decide to set up house under our tool shed. It took about a week for the Wild Life Animal rescuers to capture the marmot and transport it to the country.

That's great. My parents lease land to a CSA and I volunteer there on occasion during harvest.

Missed having my garden plot in the Community Garden. I gave up my plot two years ago, because was busy with other life changing events.

Now my life has settle in to a dull pace. Was really missing having my garden plot . I was informed tonight, I got the plot next to my original plot. It is smaller than my original plot which suits me just fine. My neighbor gardener wanted my original plot as he grows a lot of vegetables. The plot he had was too small. So we are neighbors trading plots! I don't grow much veggies, just a few seasonal veggies. the rest of my plot will be full of flowers.

I was the one whom pestered whom ever was in favour of a Community Garden on the city lots behind our condo we pester city hall for years, to support a Community Garden, in the weed infested city lots behind my condo building. That was 10 years ago and this spring a very nice community park was erected next to our very established Community garden by the city. Originally there were 4 homes city lots , now one remains as a rental for the City library drop off of damaged books. When the park was built I was thrilled as my corner unit has full view of park and garden, that can only increase my $$$$ investments in my home!
