I only measure my waist because that's the easiest (right at my belly button) and I have lost an inch since starting IF.
I would love to lose some in my bra as mine are all uncomfortable. emoticon
I broke down and bought a few larger (still not comfy) but tend to wear sports bras most of the time (not very flattering!).

Years ago someone on one of my teams suggested weighing in on Sat and Sun and using the lowest one as the official weigh in so I have always done that.

I also print off my SparkSummary calendar (on your start page, to the left, half way down) at the beginning of each month and keep a few notes on there- like fasting days and unofficial weigh-ins and workout notes...
Then I reprint it at the end of each month, copy any important notes, and keep them in a folder. I have them going back to Jan of 2009.

Veeeeeeerrry interesting to observe one's journey in the long term.
If I hadn't done that, I would not have been able to talk to my doc about when my hip pain started (bursitis) in May of 2010 and to be able to figure out why (running- or, more accurately, not stretching properly after).

I do run on, don't I? emoticon

Have a great weekend, all. emoticon

I am very much looking forward to weigh in tomorrow.
I think I will do a semi-fast tomorrow.
To me, that means a 16-20 hour fast and then a normal dinner, with wine.
emoticon

Steph - I did take some measurements before I started the 5:2 fast diet. After one month I lost 1/2" off my waist, hips, and each thigh that I track on sparks. I did not write it down but I think I also lost 1" off my stomach. I plan on taking measurements again next week, I only take them once a month, and will let you know if they have changed at all. I do know that a pair of jeans that I could not get over my hips I can now get on and zip up. I don't think they are quite ready to wear outside since they are still tight, but there is definitely progress.

Like you Steph, my parents are alcoholics. By Wisconsin standards, they're just normal people though. In my head, three six shot a piece drinks aren't normal by any means. Wisconsin: Out-drinking your state since 1848. True fact. I do have an occasional drink, but my tolerance is so low I'm buzzed after one beer or half a glass of wine. Then I cut myself off. I'm fine with that though.

I haven't taken measurements since October. I lost the majority of my weight in the six months between then and starting 5:2, so I don't know how accurate they'd be in regards to this diet. I don't feel like I've lost inches anyway. Everyone says I look smaller, but I think they're just crazy. All the weight only disappeared from my bra, which is why I'm down a size there and nowhere else.

Tomorrow means there'll be a new June thread. I'll put it up tonight before I go to bed, so as not to cause any confusion today. It'll be stickied just like this one is, so don't worry about it being hard to find.

I was thinking a tape measure would be a good idea, i've been doing bootcamp (more sits than i care to count) and i definately have looser waiste bands now but they definitately seem to have improved more in the 2 weeks since starting the fasts.

I never really drink in the week, I fall into the worst category - binge drinker UK standard over 2 pints of beer is binging - i can definitely drink more than two large beers on a sat evening. Not this weekend though too much studying to do !!

What happens tomorrow does someone start a June thread?

PS Lightonmy feet are you really a ninja ?

Noelle - you asked on another post: WHEN DO WE WEIGH IN.

I FAST on MON/THURS and I always weigh in WED....(that's after eating a full day).....Every WED I fast...but I know other people do other things!!! Just pick ONE DAY..and always weigh in on that day..and you will see a change...because your weigh does change daily with Fasting and Non Fasting!

I haven't measured with an inch tape, but the pants that barely did up, and only then if I laid down to zip them (!) I know we've all been there emoticon are now really loose! I don't know how much is diet, and how much is Pilates though. I've only been doing that a couple of weeks, and it may be making a difference.

I don't usually drink alcohol during the week, and never on fast days, but I do like a bevy at the weekend, often with my son Ian, and DIL Jo. I only like beer, I don't drink either wine or spirits.

I also get an enormous 'high' from fasting, and exercising too. Whereas I get depressed by normal calorie restricted 'sensible eating' dieting.

Meg - I dont' drink either. Never cared for it. I'm lucky if I have it once or twice a year. And usually it's kolua with Coffee...or a Mudslide (yep..the creamer sweet it is the better)!!!
I suppose it's a good thing. My dad was an alcholic and my mom..."still leans that way"! SO i'm glad I just dont' care for it! Instead I"M A CHOCOHOLIC - and I manage to STAY AWAY FROM CHOCOLATE on my FAST DAYS!!! (that in itself is a miracle)!

Joannanow - I too find that when I eat sugar on my "normal days" I feel ICK!!! And it makes me so happy to hit a fast day again. I do really good fasting...unless I'm emotional and then all I want to do is EAT......this 5:2 really shows me HOW MUCH "FOOD" plays on my emotions. But unlike a DIET...I can hold off on a FAST DAY. WOW a difference!

Elizabeth - Great job ...Keep up the good work!!! You inspire me to GET MY ACT TOGETHER AGAIN!!!

QUESTION: Has anyone measured their waist line? I mean...the scale isn't the only thing affected by this diet....does it decrease your waist line. I know when i was doing the fast (unlike last week)....my waist was getting smaller..faster than any other diet!! And my pants started falling down!! WHOO HOOO

I fasted yesterday - and WOW do I feel GOOD TODAY!

I'm keeping a TRACKING RECORD of HOW I feel each day. What I crave. When I feel sick (what I ate that caused it).

If my doc ends up giving me pills I need to know if they cause effects or not. So I'm keeping careful track.

SO FAR - whenever I have FASTED and the DAY AFTER...I feel GREAT!!!

Last week I didn't really fast - just a partial one...but not a real one. And I tell you I didn't feel good all week!!!

Interesting. I have only done this for three weeks. The week before - I fasted and felt great all around the fast. Last week no fast and I felt ick all week. This week FAST and I feel great again! (HUM..I see a pattern)!!!

Tomorrow my week 2 weigh in day, I had to fight very hard with myself not to check this morning - i have been super good this week, 2 fast days and 4 days at the gym - walk / runnning 5k and 3 boot camp classes.

I have exams on monday and tuesday (I'm studying a masters) so I am hoping the pre exam stress does not get to me over the weekend weighing in Sat should hopefully help.

Well done Meadsbay!!! Although losing weight isn't easy, I always feel that maintenance is more difficult still. I've lost weight a dozen times, only to gradually put it back on! It's taken me the best part of 5yrs to get to this point, though I haven't been at SP all this time, and I'm hoping that it'll be easier this time, because it is already just a matter of adding in or taking out extra fast days. As long as I don't really pig out on my non fast days, I'm OK.

Hi all! I agree with Joanna's remarks about learning to maintain our weight on the other 5, non-fasting days. Not long ago there was an article featured on SP about a study where dieters were divided into 2 groups; one dieted from the start while the other maintained weight for a period of time before dieting. The study found that those who practiced maintenance first lost more weight in the long run. Hopefully, maintenance will be easier for us because of the 5:2 diet. Another thing to like about the fast diet!

Hello all,
just caught up on all your posts-
it is sososososo nice to come to this happy place-
I learn something new every time. emoticon
I have consistently fasted 2x a week (once 3x) since April 11 and was seeing a slow zig-zag down 7 lbs in the first month. emoticon
Then I started getting sloppy-
I'm one of the wine lovers who was feeling deprived and started playing mind games about how much I work out, blah, blah, blah...
And- surprise, surprise- my wt started creeping back up. emoticon
So I slapped myself upside the head-
and got serious again.
Monday was a good fast day (no wine any more on fast days- period)-
today was my first PERFECT fasting day-
503 calories-
no wine-
(drank an entire liter of no sodium club soda before and during dinner)
good workout at the gym
(I follow the working out in a fasting state philosophy).
I feel emoticon
Can't wait to weigh in tomorrow-
although Sunday is my weigh in day.
emoticon

Meg I love the idea of the no alcohol on fast days challenge. I don't drink on those days, my calories are to precious, but this is just an extra incentive. Stonecot I am learning so much from reading your posts, along with everyone else's. Thank you everyone for sharing.

Thanks for putting out the welcome mat. emoticon I love your spark name Offwithherbread.... that is so delightful!
I have been doing the 5&2 plan for 2 months and my weight is down 17 pounds. I'm especially pleased that my blood sugar is back to normal too as it was borderline two months ago. I really feel I could do this indefinitely. I find hunger passes quickly on the two days and I am more thoughtful about what I eat on the 5 days. I am learning more on the 5 days actually. I think maintaining while doing "normal" eating has been the best learning experience! I limit my love of wine to 2 days a week and try not to overdo that either. I have had a few sugar binges along the way but they felt so terrible the next day that I am hoping to be more controlled there too. All in all I have never been so happy with an eating plan! emoticon

Thanks for the compliments Vicky. Although low fat is the fashionable way at the moment, initial research on the 5:2 and IF have indicated that the people who stick to it, and loose the most weight eat a higher fat diet! They're not sure if it's the fat itself, or whether people who eat a higher fat diet on their non fast days, feel less deprived so don't cheat. Also the diet itself lowers cholesterol, and blood fats, so it's less of a problem.

Five years ago, I had to have a radical mastectomy, which also involved taking all the muscles of my right arm/shoulder, and reattaching them. Although I regained full movement in that arm, it's numb underneath to the elbow, and much weaker than the left arm. The point of this is, that with the gym, and karate etc, it has become a lot stronger. It certainly is worth persevering with. Can you swim? That, and water aerobics would be good, non weight bearing exercise for your whole body. Try doing arm curls, raises, rows, all sorts, sitting down, with a can of beans etc in each hand! You can use a lighter can on you weaker side. Don't go for weight, but lots of reps. You'll have to do a bit of lateral thinking! emoticon

You guys are emoticon ! I'm enjoying this group very much :)

Evelyn, I read your comment on my blog. Thanks for the tips. Funny you should say about higher protein and lower carbs, fats a little higher but not crazy... It is sort of how things tend to sort out when I'm logging my foods.I'm not intentionally going that way. I'm just eating what I'd make for my family more or less. That is one of the reasons I'm interested in this diet. Right now while it's all so new to me I'll go online and count calories, take notes of everything that goes in the pot as I cook... I know me well enough to realize though that it's not the long term solution because I'm going to lose interest in being so diligent. Having up days that are flexible and forgiving and only having to be careful every other day is very attractive when I know how little effort it will take for me to stick with it. Just cook and freeze things that I can pull out and eat on down days means very little need for daily tracking on the computer. They are getting some healthier menus too these days.

Also thanks for mentioning the chair workouts. I'm going to look them up. I have some problems with one arm. I fell and loss use of it almost totally for a year. If I am able to do some of the exercises for upper body it might help improve it a lot. I do have use of it again after a year of physical therapy but it has not fully built back up since I did not continue to work on it. I look a little lopsided :) So many goals... One day at a time :)

I can't believe all the things you're into. My oldest two are 18 and 20 and I don't think they could keep up with you on their best day. emoticon

Oh, so many things to say. I apologize in advance for the more than likely disjointed post that is about to follow.

Well, first off, welcome back Nikki! Mental hissy fits happen to the best of us. If you need to take a week off here and there, do it!

Triing: I have an 18 year old sister. If she got engaged to a 40 year old I would probably attack her. I suppose I look at things more harshly when it involved kids around her age, but I think an age gap that large is a pretty universal thing for people to not be okay with.

Everyone who mentioned getting flack about fasting: Seriously, people need to take a chill pill. More often that not, whether it's mentioned in the main SP forums or IRL, everyone freaks out. I don't think being hungry is something to be afraid of or treat as unsafe. Just look at the fact that life expectancy rose during the great depression. By 7 YEARS. I mean, 'cmon now. If that's not evidence enough that we're not all going to fall down and die while trying this way of eating, I don't know what is.

It's raining in Wisconsin right now. I mean like, flash flood raining. Been doing this off and on all week. This is the first time it's been accompanied by such impressive thunder though. I'm just waiting for my brother to tell me it's Thor.

While I'm not posting much lately, I'm reading everything you guys say. The team is so much larger! We've only been a team for 53 days, in case anyone wanted to know specifics. I'm so happy that you're all such a kind and helpful bunch and that nobody has started a forum war about how awful fasting is or something to that effect.

emoticon everyone!

Everytime I post this, I remember something else I wanted to say. Oops.

I made up a no alcohol on fast days team challenge because someone who's name escapes me at the moment joked we should have one in another thread. I'll update the goal after some people join it. Apparently it's a problem quite a few members are having? So long to thirsty Thursday, I guess. I barely ever drink so I never considered that being an issue.

Oh... there was something else too. Gosh my memory sucks. haha.

Fasting today! I sure needed it. I haven't had a true fast since last week. I sorta skipped monday with the holiday. I ate much less than normal..but I didn't stick to the 500-600 hundred!!!

STAYINGTHIN3 I understand how you feel about sleep. I think mine is more due to perimenopause than my eating, but who knows. I told my dh next time it happens again I am going to my sewing room to work on a quilt.
CHUZ2LUZE, I agree with STONECOT about trying out the chair exercises on this site. They really are good. Good luck.
Fasting today and so far doing really well. But that could be because I am keeping busy working in the garden and moving our cat from our bedroom to my sewing room since two of the granddogs are coming today for the weekend. They are the only two of our granddogs who are not use to being around cats so it is just better for her to move her to another room, especially since they are spoiled and will want to sleep in bed with us. And they are both big dogs.
Have a great day everyone.

I have the nasty feeling that when they say 'eat normally' on the non fast days, they mean 'normal for you' not everyone else. If that means south beach diet, then that's what it is. Can you fit in a third fast day? That might be enough to turn the tide? Would you want to even?

Can you manage to do any of the chair exercises that are on this site? They are surprisingly good, I used to do them when I had sciatica a couple of years ago. They again might get things moving.

emoticon on not being frightened of computers too. Try not to be discouraged, you are at least maintaining, not gaining.

I get really sleepy at night on my fast days.
I have fasted twice a week since I started on March 25th but I have not posted it on the site. I'm sorry but I just forget. I caught up with May but can't seem to get April, I guess it's too late. I'll try harder because it's good for the team isn't it? It's the only thing I do right. I don't exercise like I should and that is my downfall I think, especially at my age (80s)
AND I have not lost any weight. I have been waffling between 182 and 184 and can't get below the 182. I weigh 182 on the day after my fast and 184 on the day before. The only thing I can think of is to eat almost a fast on my eating days. I don't go crazy but ear like a person that doesn't have a weight problem instead of my usual South Beach diet. . I'm very discouraged today. It's the lack of exercise. I hurt my hip and am trying to recover from that but one of these days I will get the exercise in.

I usually sleep really well on fasting days, but when I haven't I am pretty sure it has been due to me not drinking enough during the day.

I never have trouble sleeping unless i go to the gym late in the evening then I'm too wired to sleep.

I noticed there are lots of new member I'm sure it was 73 at the beginning of the week and now 77. So welcome to all of new people.and welcome back to those who have been away.

Interesting family news yesterday my Boyf's sister (17 yrs old) got engaged... to a guy who is 40. I think his family are all a little shocked I am staying as far away from this family debate as possible.

Welcome Kensho. I agree with others. If you need a week off, then take it. We all have times when fasting is almost impossible, and it's pointless fighting it. Just do what you can, you may find as you get into it, that you change and won't need that safety valve any more.

I'm fasting again today, the second one this week. Ended up having a couple of beers with my karate chums after training last night, which has bumped up the calories on my non fast day a lot! Enjoyed it though, and at least I ignored the crisps (chips) and peanuts!

I'm in minor agony with my ribs this morning! Not karate, but Yoga! She does it to me every week, it's like being on the rack!

Funnily enough, I sleep a lot better on my fast days. Out like a light usually. I don't need a lot of sleep so it's quite often I don't go to bed till the early hours, then get up at 6am. That's one reason I'm an astronomer.

Welcome back Kensho! It's a process--2 steps forward, one step back. I also have moments when I just need to back off.

I've noticed that I wake up more in the night when I fast and last night was the worst--and here I am at 5:30 am at the keyboard and nursing my coffee (with milk!). I actually have been awake since 4:30. Oh well. I do like the mornings all to myself, with people around me asleep--well, husband asleep as the kids are gone.

Planning my favorite breakfast of oatmeal and fruit. Back later.

Hey SunnySide20,

Today was my second fast day too. I thought it was a little more challenging than Monday too. I was giving a lot of credit to not sleeping much last night but maybe not. So glad we can come here to compare notes and learn from others. :) The day is mostly over now. emoticon

Hi everyone. Great discussion and great attitudes-thanks for sharing! I am on my second day of fasting this week - Monday was a breeze but I am a little hungrier today. Hunger does pass so I try to drink tea and change what I am doing and it seems to work. Everyone is different but we all can do this together emoticon

Hello! Remember me? I just could not stay away. I have been off the fast diet for 12 days and I regret that choice terribly.

After reading a blog by The_Shakeshaft where he talked about how the book says this is a way of life, not a diet....I really really started thinking.

I think...for ME....I will need to take a week off here and there. I know I psyched myself out. I was losing quite fast at first. 2 pounds after every fast day! Then I stopped and I was stuck and still doing this fasting thing and it frustrated me! So for lack of a better way of saying it....I had a mental hissy fit.

So I am back to it on Monday. I have gained some weight back and that is fine....It will come off eventually.

I have missed you!

Time to catch up and see how those of you I ''know'' are doing and to get acquainted with the newer members.

I'm with you Evelyn. I like the eyes on your own plate. emoticon Sounds like something my mother might have said to us growing up.

If one plan really did "work" for everyone there would only be one plan. People usually stop looking for answers once they have a satisfying one. Oh well, maybe I'm just a non conformist at heart. I'm really glad to read all of your posts though. It's very helpful.

Keeping up with the research...not always so easy. Programs and articles that started this diet are a good example. From time to time I google Fast diet, or the people and places I know of that are doing the research. Even coming here is a good place--surely among all of us, someone will hear about something. Also, if this really works as a diet and to improve our health, it will become better accepted and vice versa.

This is the first time I have been so hungry! I think I know why--I've only had protein and 1 tomato. I usually make sure in my 500 calories I have a blend of protein, fat, and carbs and today I didn't. Oh well. Another 2 hours and it's dinnertime!

When I have tried little and often it
a. made me think about food all day long
b. made me continuously hungry and unsatisfied
c. gave me an opportunity to overeat 6x a day instead of 3x

and I gained weight quickly too.

Each to his own. There is a team called 'eyes on your own plate' and I think that's a very good principal to stick to.

When we hear all the anti-fasting discussion, it doesn't hurt to remember that what we are doing is really cutting edge. Research centers for longevity are doing the bulk of it, including Krista Varady, whom we talked about last week who is researching Alternate Day fasting (4-3). It seems to have been Michael Mosley's idea to modify her ON-GOING AND NOT YET CONCLUSIVE research to his 5-2 diet. And all the research seems to be positive so LETS GO FOR IT!

Still, we need to use caution and common sense. We need to keep up with the research as the results become available. Obviously, some people are not suited for this--young women who want to be or are pregnant, people with eating disorders, etc. And I think we need to repeat this often for new people joining the thread.

I also cannot eat little and often. I too just end up over-eating. As I've said before, this is the first time I have found a way to manage social situations and maintaining my weight.

I agree that i feel more energised on a fast day, i did an hour of circuit training this morning more pressups and sits than I could count ! and I am now sitting at my desk wondering if i will leave work early enough to go for a run this evening.

Today is fast day for me - I brought scallops for dinner haven't deicde what to have them with yet.

I saw a thread on SP that was very anti fasting for a day-I guess it goes against recent thoughts of eating little and often- I tried that and just ending up eating all day long and gaining even more. I find there is a great sense of achieve having made through the day and I can't remember who said they didnt feel guilty - i agree me either and I had cake yesterday yum yum

Fasted yesterday. It was a good day, I trained hard and today I feel a bit stiff and sore. Yoga later will sort that out. Well done Roxanne, for being flexible enough to realise you needed food! I've not experienced that so far.

Both my daughters tried the fast diet, and neither of them could stick to it, they said the hunger pangs were too intense! One said that she felt as if her stomach was eating itself! I've never experienced that either, but of course I'm used to various diets when it was normal to feel deprived and hungry.

Another Fast day. I usually don't eat breakfast on a fast day, but I was really hungry and low energy so I scrambled an egg in a half tsp of coconut oil (I love cooking with coconut oil). And I put a spoonful of milk in my tea. I feel so much better! I'll plan for an early dinner.

I agree with yesterday's posts--people have such funny ideas of fasting. Yet, at least among the people I know, if you say you are fasting for spiritual reasons, they won't say anything.

Check in later...

I have added exercise in which has slowed my weight loss down BUT I have those scales which measure fat percentage / muscle etc and it shows that my body composition is moving quite dramatically. So I am going to try and let go of caring about the weight so much.

I have lost 3 cms off my wait in a tad over 5 weeks. 5cms is the difference between sizes.

People's reaction is funny. Hunger / starvation seems such an emotive subject. Somehow loading up with junk food and soft drinks causes less of a reaction.

Surely you can be nutritionally deprived on really bad diets no matter how much you eat?

Finished my first fast day on holiday which is an achievement. Boiled egg for breakfast, ryvita, cottage cheese and lettuce for lunch, poached cod, peas & carrots followed by fresh pineapple for dinner and a cup of skimmed milk in 3 cups of tea and a teaspoon of light Horlicks before bed. And I don't feel deprived.

On my fast days I experience a great feeling of energy. I can exercise for hours. My joints especially hips and knees have improved a lot, but I don't know whether that's the diet, or the yoga, Pilates, and aerobics with weights I've been doing. I just feel so well!!! And although I've not lost a lot of weight, or shrunk lots of inches, my clothes are fitting a lot better, and as a bonus, I'm not feeling guilt every time I eat something, which is improving my relationship with food.

I've been counting calories for the last 3 weeks anyway and losing weight. I do like the idea of eventually not having to count calories as I learn more or less what my eating pattern should look and feel like on this plan. More than the weight loss I am interested in finding out if it will reduce the amount of inflammation I experience in my joints. I have read a few IF books now and they all discuss the potential health benefits that go beyond weight loss. What other positive results have any of you had while following these diets?

My doctor is all in favour too. In fact he said that he'd review my results and think of doing it himself. As I said on Vicki's blog, he once told me that I should always leave the table still hungry, so he's already practising some sort of food restriction. He's in his 50's and very slim.

I don't understand why people think that I will fall over if I don't eat for a couple of hours, and why they are so terrified of ever feeling hungry! Not that they ever do!

I'm such a dingbat :) I'm still getting the hang of this site/groups and posting.

Just started the alternate day diet, I guess a 4:3 IF yesterday. I'm so glad this is a currently active group. I joined a couple others that have had very little activity. I'm learning a lot from reading all of your posts. :-D So glad there are a couple of SP groups where I can learn and ask questions when they come up w/o starting the great debate.

Triingtogetfit--I'm in Geneva. I saw on your page that you are on the other side! Still, it is nice to see another "Swiss". I'm from the US and married a Swiss and he took me home.

I wrote a bunch and the internet went down and I lost it all...too late to re-write it all again. Tomorrow is another fast day. Best to all of you!

Hi everyone,

My fast, went very well yesterday and my dinner experience baked cod with black pepper on a bed of spinach and cherry tomatoes was yummy and only 220 calories so I had beef carpacio for starter and quark with rhubard for desert.

Very impressed that i managed 3 courses on 500 calories.

I'm also glad for the europeans on here I used to get very bored waiting for everyone in the US to get up and start posting hehe

Stayingthin I'm also in Switzerland - although origninally from the UK.

I was meant to go swimming this evening but there is a storm and that was enough of an excuse to go straight home. I will up at 6 and at the gym before work tomorrow though I find it easier to go when im half asleep - not awake enough to protest.

Hey, All emoticon

I, too, did a bit of overindulging over the holiday weekend, but I enjoyed every minute of it and consciously made the decision to drink that beer--or three--so I can't really complain! To get back on track, however, I am going to do my 3rd fast today, another on Thursday, and am aiming to do a third fast day on Saturday.

I recently purchased a SodaStream in the mail so that I can make my own fizzy water at home, so I'll be anxiously anticipating its arrival. It will be a nice way to stay hydrated everyday, but particularly on the fast days!

Wishing everyone a great week!

I am pleased that there are a few Europeans on this board--it means I don't have to wait half the day to see someone post! And then, I have another reason to check the board because the rest of you are up and starting your day!

Yesterday's fast day was good and today was just normal. I am enjoying some toast with tuna and a glass of Swiss white wine as I write this. I still plan to do 4-3 this week, but next week may change as I now have a ladies brunch on Monday. It is all these end of the year activities and people leaving. This is the first time I haven't dreaded June.

Yes, I do believe in the power of prayer and will pray for Jeff. Hope all is better.

After the weekend of way-too-much food, the scale is coming down nicely. By Thursday it should be back on target.

Hi 5:2 ers or 4:3ers,

I have to give everyone a win here. Last Tuesday was the last time I fasted and I am fasting today. We had a family emergency this weekend, (if you are the praying type please throw some Jeff's way as we are in the midst of many miracles).

So we were traveling and in and out of a hospital and eating out constantly. I thought when I got on the scale this morning it would be awful but it wasn't. the new top of my range is 158.6 where before leaving I was hitting 160 on occasion. I had been doing more of a 4:3 before I left with plans of scaling back to a 5:2 but not a 6:1! So my plan is to go back to a 5:2 but I just wanted everyone know that the weight doesn't come all back on.

Be strong fasters!

It's lovely today to get back to normal. The weather is dire! I was happy though, taking classes at the gym. I made sure to get there 30 minutes early, when the studio is empty, and I can practice my karate kata. Then it was an hours tai chi, 45 minutes aerobics with weights, and finish off with a 30 minute swim. It felt so nice, everything easing and working nicely. Fasting today. Scrambled eggs tonight. Yum. emoticon

Have had an amazing day on Alderney today, starting with an hours walk this morning along the coastal paths and across the beach. This afternoon we went for a boat trip out to an island to see puffins, another where there was a colony of cormorants and we also saw razorbills, shags and different gulls.

It is a beautiful, sunny day (!) after all the cold rainy weather we have had this month. I'm doing laundry today and fasting. Still haven't decided if I have allergy or a cold...could be either, but I'm going strong right now.

After years of never being able to fast, I am still amazed that this is so easy and I look forward to it. I think that I could even do a full fast now, if I chose to (may do it sometime for spiritual reasons).

Look forward to reading your posts.

Oooh, Roxanne- I do hate when that happens, too.
I have spoken up before and said- sorry I ordered lightly as I am on a strict budget this week- or some such. Definitely awkward, though!

I've also had a weekend of lots of food and alcohol, so expect to be up again this week. Still, weekends with daughters only happen occasionally, so I won't complain, just get back to it next week.

My day is over and tomorrow I fast. I have eaten SO much this weekend--we ended up in a restaurant tonight with friends. Too many social events this weekend! I can't get my rings off so my water retention must be really high--probably gained fat too. Well, tomorrow I start over and I am doing 4-3 for the next 3 weeks. Back on track!

I'm a bit frustrated too. I hate these situations where you just divide the check by the number of people at the end of the meal. Invariably I end up paying more than I ordered and of course, the guy who decides we should do this is the one who ordered the most expensive and the most food! Plus, he decided we should pay for our friend who was visiting. Sometimes I don't mind, but we didn't have the cash on us tonight. My husband just calculated our order and put the money on the tray and said, "there it is--that's what I have." and we said goodbye and left! Still, it was awkward.

Welcome Thunderlizard (sounds like a Native American greeting).
Sounds like we are using the same approach- I fast pretty much from dinner to dinner.
I had a 3rd fast day this week but, sadly, am up 3 lbs this morning, as I drank alcohol every single night this week. This must stop!
I wasted an entire week!
My dh was away so I watched a movie and dank wine every night. Poor me. emoticon

Have a great Sunday, all!

Hello I have just joined this team. I have been doing the 5:2 for just over a month fasting twice a week by eating only one evening meal. I have set days - Tuesday and Thursday.

At day 31 I was down 3.3 kilos (just over 7 pounds) so I am happy with that. Normally my body is very resistant to weight loss. I am very heavy though so perhaps that makes a difference?

So far I have learnt that I need to be well slept, not stressed and eat one meal at the end of day (otherwise I feel hungry and find it hard to last until evening).

It is nice to have some people to share the ride with. The nay sayers who have not even watched the doctumentary make me cranky. The word "fast" seems to engender a lot of fear.

Hi all! Well, I have decided to give 4-3 a try for the next 3 weeks. After that, our lives get irregular with summer happenings. I went overboard the last two days. Too much cooking and salvaging recipes that went astray (I ended up with a new recipe I "made" called, "Chocolate Chip Cookie Bar Brownies--you figure it out!). I also taught my son to make Louisiana Style Gumbo (including how to make a roux) and last night I made one of the best Mexican meals I've ever made for close friends who came buy. But I am paying for it now. I can't get my rings off! Start over tomorrow with a fast! I just love knowing that all I have to do to start fasting again!

RE comments made: Yes, I agree that Michael Mosley probably eats clean most of the time. Thank you, Triing2getfit for the link to the fast diet forum. Very interesting reading there!

I also agree withe Brenda that Mosley was clear in the video that he was adapting from the research. And I think that includes also the research that was done in other places besides Chicago. But I also think the message received by many people was that Krista Varady researched 5-2 and she didn't. I can understand that she is upset. Such is the problem with journalism. 5-2 may not be enough for everyone, but it is clear from his website that a lot of people are losing weight just fasting 2x a week.

Opps looks as though half of my last message got lost, I think my main point was on thefastdiet.co.uk website forum there is a thread on why the diet might not be working for you.!

So today was my big weigh in day 2.1lbs down :) This I'm quite happy with as I have been struggling to see scales move anywhere other than backwards and forwards for ages. I just hope now I can get a 2 week loosing streak !

I am aiming to stay at under 2000 on non fast days - I know this isnt too challenging but I will see how this goes and change it if i need to.

Verrrrrrrrrry intersesting!
My take on this is-
we all need to find what works for us-
through trial and error-
and not expect immediate or sustained results on the first try.
I am thrilled to be losing slowly on 5:2, with an occasional 4:3 thrown in there.
I eat cleanly on feasting days, but try to have one 2000 cal day per week.
I exercise a lot.
Find what works for you and stick to it for a few months-
then decide.
Have a good weekend, all!

Ya...I agree....Mosley eats pretty clean..I think with the 5:2 (at least for me)...as long as I eat OK on the NON fast days..I will be fine.

Heck..if it's easier to follow a 5:2 than a RESTICTION daily..I"m all for it.

We just gotta be wise and not OVEREAT too much on non fast days

I've been thinking more about her response. Mosley was pretty clear in the video that he was adapting from her research I thought. He was combining research from several different doctors to come up with the 5:2. I do know if you go to his facebook page (or maybe it is the fast diet page) he eats very clean on the his non-fast days too. If I remember right she was the one who took him out for the hamburger and fries on the non-fast days. That tends to be more my life so maybe I do need more of a 4:3:)

Roxanne, thanks for the info. I agree those who are losing weight should stick with it. Also, I feel good on it so as long as I don't gain weight I think I'll stay on it. I probably need to watch more of what I eat on non-fast days. The third day of fasting has worked to the point that I've lost very slowly but it is difficult on holiday weekends like this.

Wow. I don't know what to think! Certainly, those of us who are losing weight now with 5-2, should continue. Don't knock it if it works! The rest will have to decide whether to increase the fasting or go back to the regular stuff.

I do think it obviously worked for Michael Mosley.

For myself, I am going to consider a third day of fasting. And continue to track my feast days. That may be the key. There is still a deficit of calories on fast days.

What do you think?

Here's my answer and my thoughts on the next post.

Hi Roxanne,

Thanks for your message. Regarding Mosley's book, please be aware that there is no study to date that has examined the effectiveness of the 5:2 diet. Mosley took all of my research that examines the effect of fasting 3-4 days per week and applied it to his 5:2 diet. I really don't believe that fasting only half the time would yield the same weight loss and health benefits. He has completely misrepresented my research, which I am not happy about.

My research shows that people don't overeat when fasting EVERY OTHER DAY, not twice a week. In my opinion, this lack of feasting would not happen while on 5:2, which would cause obese people to lose little or no weight.

Best wishes,

Krista

I'm feeling more HUMAN today.....wow...I didn't fully fast yesterday but I certainly ate a LOT less calories than normal and I went a long time without food.

Looking forward to the weekend!!

Monday is Memorial day...so I probably won't be on here until late Tues....Have a great weekend!!

I seem to be losing an average of 1lb a week which I suppose is about right, although a bit disappointing considering the amount of exercise I average in a week. At least it is going down though.

Melanie, Just a suggestion...why don't you email Professor Krista Varady who is doing the research at the University of Chicago and was in Michael Mosley's program. I would be interested to know if any of the participants of her program had the same problem losing weight. You can find her address at the web link here:

I was suppose to fast today...but...it's not going to be like normal. I'll limit food...but not to what I usually do. I'm just not feeling well.

My emotions are wack - hormones I think. Still trying to recover from being sick..and when I don't take the "meds" every day..I go wacky!!!

So....this week not so great!

Brenda, I have been tempted by 4-3, but my schedule is such that I don't think I would actually do it and I would start cheating so I am better off with 5-2. You could try it for 3 weeks and see...

My opinion (for what it's worth) is that in the end, to lose weight, it is calories in/calories out.

Ultimately, if you do 4-3 and stay under 500, and keep your feast days to 110% of your calorie needs, I think you might lose about 30% faster (if I did the math right). You save (give or take) 1500 calories on a fast day and it takes 3,500 calories to lose a lb. Maybe you are a better mathematician than I am! emoticon

Hello 5:2 ers!

Okay, I've been looking over my calendar and I have tracked my fast days. It looks like I've been doing more a 4:3 than a 5:2. I'm wondering if I would actually have more success doing a strict 5:2. Anyone compared the two??

It is so great to see everyones posts. Now that our team is getting a little 'older' we can compare what works and doesn't and have people at different points in the journey.

Hi everyone, I stepped on the scale this morning--300 g (.66 lb.) down. Not a lot but enough to encourage me. This is the kind of weight loss I had with WW (slow!) but I never felt I could eat out and always worried when we had invitations. emoticon

I felt "strong" on my fast yesterday and didn't waver, but was hungrier than usual--probably left from the weekend retreat with big meals and desserts.

I love quinoa. I will try and post my quinoa salad which I'll be making again soon since it is a good dish for end of the school year potlucks. The key to quinoa is to rinse it well or it tastes bitter.
