Got Fourth of July party plans later this week? Map out meals ahead of time — and don’t fast — to maintain healthy eating habits.

Summer parties can have a way of derailing your best efforts to eat healthful foods, even if you’re conscientious most of the year. Facing a picnic table filled with barbecued ribs, potato salad and margaritas can be challenging, especially if there are few other nutritious options available. If your Fourth of July weekend includes a party (or parties) filled with tempting foods, you may think that you should fast so that you can eat whatever you want when you get to the shindig. The problem is that fasting can backfire. By skipping a meal or two, you will face the spread with less resolve than you’d have if you had eaten a reasonable meal ahead of time. What’s reasonable? Eat a protein-rich snack — e.g., a hard-boiled egg (without the yolk), a chicken drumstick (without the skin) or a spoonful of peanut butter on a slice of whole-wheat bread — so you can more easily limit the things you simply can’t resist. Blueberry pie, anyone?

Remember to drink water when you exercise.
Drink before, during, and after your walk (1-1.5 cups of water for a 20 minute walk). Every system in your body depends on water. Lack of water can lead to dehydration, which can drain your energy and make you feel tired. If you exercise or engage in any activity that makes you sweat, you need to drink extra water to compensate for the fluid loss. How much additional fluid you need depends on how much you sweat during exercise, and the duration and type of exercise. Be sure to continue to replace fluids after you're finished exercising.
