Today I decided that while I am watching TV I am going to do my dumbell strength training.

To me HEALTH means Energy. Stamina. Flexibilty. A relatively pain free body. Enjoying healthy food. You are your body, and your weight loss efforts will succeed exactly to the extent that you mange to do the work on behalf of your embodied self. You’ll do much better when you focus on making positive changes to improve your health and well-being, rather than on fighting your bad habits.

Just an update to let you all know my training program is going well with me. I finally decided the Bikini Workout program worked best for me on my non walking days. I started this week the Couch to 5K from the beginning again this week and yesterday I was able to jog 10 times during my session. My walking path is a figure 8 and is one km. long. When I got to the middle section of the 8 that is when I did my jogging. There is a slight incline at the top of the post so for the last 15 steps I am pushing myself more. I go around the figure 8 five times and by the 9th and 10 time I am jogging I can really feel the burn in my thighs.

I've been doing the bikini workout program for my strength training for now. I am just at the beginning stages of strength training. Yesterday after finishing my workout I decided to try and walk on my treadmill and see if I had the stamina to do the 3 miles after. When I started I really didn't think I was going to be able to do the full 3 miles but I persevered and succeeded. I felt amazed at my stamina. In the evening just after dinner I notice while reading my e-mail that one of the challenges of a team I had just joined the day before had a required video 20 min. Kick Boxing that I was supposed to do so I added that to my daily tracker afterwards. I did 1hr. and 57 min total and burned 612 calories. Not a bad day if I say so myself. Knees are feeling a big sore today so I'm just going to do the bikini workout and the Kick 'boxing today. I think that's enough for today.

You are your body, and your weight loss efforts will succeed exactly to the extent that you mange to do the work on behalf of your embodied self. How do you complete your exercise? Do you go to a gym and use machines or do you work out at home? Would you be interested in (and could you commit to) using some fitness DVDs? I find that using fitness DVDs or videos like the ones Spark People publishes, help me to keep a balanced routine. The boot camp offerings include combinations of strength and cardio and they always end with stretching. So you get the best of all worlds.

If you go to a gym and use cardio equipment or you do some sort of home cardio routine, you could break up your usual routine into intervals incorporating 5-10 minutes of body weight exercises (planks, squats, push ups, etc...) and then finish your routine with stretching. If you do your workouts this way, you burn more calories while doing strength training, because the cardio intervals help keep your heart rate up.

Hope this helps give folks who have issues with strength or cardio some alternate ideas on how to get through these sorts of exercises. Breaking things up also helps the routine go by quicker, too. These methods are how I keep going each week.

I'm getting ready to pop in a DVD and do some Strength work with Iron Yoga. It seems wimpy, but I use one pound weights- I'll be buying 2# pretty soon. I tried to use my 3#, but is was too hard!!! Funny. It gets my sweating, which is what we need. emoticon

Keep on Truckin'

I enjoy strength training. Cardio is my downfall.

I agree with the other two team members. If you haven't been doing much strength training, then you definitely want to start small and work your way up. If you're doing machine weights, maybe 5 - 20 lbs to start. I would, however, suggest you use body weight for a week or two, along with some 5 lb dumbbells. You can do modified push ups, modified planks, sit ups, tricep dips, etc.

Stretching is also good too. You don't need to overstretch. We all stretch when we get up and do that long yawn. Usually we stretch our backs or arms. Maybe once you get out of bed, you can hold your arms up and do a slight bend to each side and then try to touch your toes.

Agree on the strength training. However, EVERY day needs to be a stretching day. A little, or a lot, stretch every day. I alternate between isotonic and yoga stretches.
