The book has some great recipes and ideas, however I am struggling with buying all the food for the week. The quantity the store sells and what the recipe requires just doesn't make it very affordable to me. I am hoping that I will be able to figure that part out.

I just wanted to say a couple of things about reading the SP Book. I bought it several months ago. I was excited about the possibility of thinking it might help me in one of the biggest struggles of life. It has helped me a great deal.

First of all, I read it daily until I had finished it. I did not go to the middle or end to see how to start until I had finished. I had to organize it to suit my life style and I am a protein eater and allergic to many white products and sweet items.

I did not go into this with excitement as I usually did with a new DIET book, I read it as something that might help me change SOME of the bad habits I had developed over my lifetime. AND that is what I have accomplished.

Last December, 2013, I started cutting back on portions and cutting out the worst of the starches and became much more involved in the team concept of helping others. This was working AND it is still working. I am now down 26 pounds and it feels like for the first time EVER that I am working for a healthy life instead of life problems making me fatter or thinner. I am doing it because I am working for it. At this time, I am at kind of a stand still but I am NOT discouraged but trying to think of things that are going to help me and my teams. I try to post daily and life gets in the way sometimes but most days I find if I try I can MAKE time.

So as a few people have stated, yes the book is OK but does not cover everything for them. The program is the best there is and if you use it and adapt it to yourself YOU WILL LOSE WEIGHT AND BECOME MUCH HEALTHIER.

Don't keep jumping around, losing weight does not meant to try every fad diet that comes along. If you stick with this plan, you will lose weight and find in a years time that your life will be better even if it is 10 pounds at a time.

Thanks to Spark Guy and his special team that gives so freely and always there for any of us. We can all do it. September is here and you have a great start to finish the year off right. So go for it and do yourself a favor by feeling healthier BEFORE THE NEW YEAR instead of waiting to do it on January 1st. Hugs, Daisy J

~LIVE~LAUGH~LOVE~ENJOY LIFE TO THE BEST OF YOUR ABILITY! WORK AT WHAT YOU FEEL IS BEST FOR YOU! THERE ARE MANY THINGS IN OUR LIFE TO THINK ABOUT, BUT NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT. "GOD HAS DONE THAT FOR ME AND FOR YOU" Hugs,Judy

I bought the book,, read it with such delight,, until I hit both the exercises,, and the recipes. The recipes I didnt find were helpful to myself,, a family of 1,,,,, it's just to much $$$ to spend on the things needed to make them,, and way to much (Even with freezing) to consume.

I am disabled,, so the exercises,,, did not fit for me,,, I wish there was some attention to the many of us,,, who are disabled,, or those who due to just starting this journey,,, could do if the weight is just starting to come off,, and due to the size,, was more doable. i do not expect any book though,, to pay attention to all of my disablities, but even a little alternativves,, to suggesting a site for this (youtube has a lot of sit down activities,, including what I now do,,, and that's beginners yoga,, of which a lot are done while sitting, or laying down).

THANKS !! Other than that,,,, I found it helpful.

day 5 did a review for 8 women at TOPS club
Following the book, prepared menus, meals. Grocery story for a handful of items trying to keep cost in control. Logging everything, and I can pick a meal weather breakfast, or supper find my plan has the calories eat then log on sparkpeople.
My second set of meals actually has carbs, fat, calories, and protein which I like to see at a glace also.
They were impressed and not that they will go the way I did but 155 to 150 in 5 days.
Start second week sunday and today I did eat a few sweets that I don't eat when in my plan. Reward and pat on back.
The whole message is it takes time, it takes patience, and commitment.

I am thoroughly enjoying the book. It's written in a way that makes it totally relatable to me and makes it simplistic to follow (and understand why you do this). I have been on a long and slow journey and it's helping me to focus on the positives of that process. I would recommend this book to anyone!!!!

there are some excellent recipes in the book! :)

I mix and match those with others - so not really following the plan to the exact either. I loved the inspiration of the book though! I need to re-read it every now and again - it helps me stay on track! :)

I only just finished chapter 2. I am not following the plan. I'm just picking up those glorious tidbits and testimonials on eating healthy and exercising as a lifestyle choice. I like the food swap and recipe ideas. I have a consistent cardio plan, but I need to stretch and strength train. I like the advice of listening to your body and improving in strength as you go. The book is making me hungry though! Lol!

Oh perfect Aalley2, I found it under the My Nutrition tab! Thank you so much! I spent a couple of hours tonight cutting and pasting the menu plans for the 14 days. I also stopped at Trader Joe's and picked up a lot of the food for the first week. I'm getting it together!

Wondering if you got your answer for your question about the diet portion of the book.
I did not order the spark activity tracker that shows up at the side of this post.

I bought this for my Kindle, but I really wish I could print the shopping list and recipes! It's just too hard to try to find in an ebook. I went back to Amazon tonight and ordered a hardcopy, but I'll still have to make a photocopy of the shopping lists to take to the store. It would be so helpful if Sparkpeople could put the shopping list and the recipes on the site somewhere, so those who bought the book would have a resource to print these things. I know I'd appreciate it!

emoticon What makes the book great is all the tips on how to substitute or adjust and all the motivational tips. I know I will keep going back to it,

I enjoy the menus and recipes. However this could be much better organized and presented so that you don't have to keep flipping back and forth. I'd also like to see the menus on the track nutrition page so I could load them and check them off easily.

I love the recipes! Most of the dinner recipes make enough for more than 1 meal and I finished the last container of the Southwestern Chicken and Rice, so it's time to make more! emoticon

Reading about NEAT made me pay more attention to how much I sit all day (desk job) so now I take any opportunity to get up and walk, even if it's only a little at a time.

I consider the book a good investment....in me!

I haven't read all the feed so I don't know if anyone has already said this. I'm on to day 3 and have followed the plan with only one substitution so far (cant stand celery). I'm from the UK and the conversion from gram to ounces to cups is a little on the difficult side. I have an app that does it but to make this book (or future books) more internationally friendly it would be helpful if the recipes and or shopping lists were listed in grams and ounces. English supermarkets don't sell products by the ounce anymore and I'm not of an era that can easily convert. The same would also be helpful for oven temperatures. We don't do F, we either follow Celsius or centigrade in in a lot of UK the UK gas mark is also used.

I have found the recipes easy to follow and most of the ingredients are easy enough to find in the UK but I think these are small adaptations that would send the book from Excellent to near perfection.

As some of you did I also purchased the Spark Solution on my kindle but trying to flip from page to page on a kindle seems so much harder than just the paper back so I also purchased the paper back. I am on day 5 right now. I think so far I do feel fuller and more satisfied with trying to eat like the example menus. It seems as if I don't think of eating or snacking as much as in the past. I have made some of the suggested meals and have enjoyed all of the ones I've tried so far. On a couple of days this week I was too busy to fix the specific meals like for breakfast so I just had Cottage cheese, strawberries and oats sprinkled on top and just a sandwich for lunch I just tried to keep to the same amount of calories as they suggested for that meal. I feel a little unorganized still and it takes me more time than I would like to prepare some days but I think and hope that it will become easier as I've made the recipes several more times. Good luck to all who are trying....that is the hardest step sometimes.

I have the book on my Kindle and am regretting that purchase. I am going to try the suggestion of reading it on my computer and see if that helps...perhaps cut and paste can work there. I am also going to see if the book is at my library.

JOIHAW, I saved this information in my planner. I hope that helps.
KAGOULET, if you just use your computer it's much easier! Go to your Amazon account, click on "manage your Kindle" and then it will bring up the book on your list. Just click on "actions" and click "read now". It puts it right on your computer and that issue with not being able to read the charts/lists etc. just goes away!

I bought this as an e-book and now I am somewhat regretting that choice. Many of the "tables" in the book are not sizable on my nook and as such are too small to actually read. This includes some (but not all) of the menu's listed in part 2.

I am actually going to have to go out and buy a hardcopy before I can start using the book since I can't read the menus which really annoys me since the sole reason for buying the e-book in the first place was so that I could get started immediately. Now I have to wait for the hardcopy anyways AND I will have had to spend twice as much for the book.

The book was helpful, but I wish there were more calorie and nutrition counts given for the added items. It would be helpful for creating new menus. I changed some recipes to accommodate the fact that I'm vegetarian, but it was pretty easy.

I did not use the strength exercises because of previous shoulder surgery. Too much stress on that shoulder is a no no. I also have had several abdominal surgeries, so planks, etc. are too hard for me. I do use SP strength plans.

Success consists of getting up once oftener than you fall down. ANON.

* Did you enjoy the book? Was the program motivating, challenging and/or easy to follow?
I did enjoy the book. Reading everyone's comments in the book motivated me and made me think if they can do this so can I. The book was a challenge at times trying to work everything into my day.

* What did you think about the recipes, workouts, and motivational stories?
I think the recipes were great . Everything was so filling and held me over until the next meal. I did my own workouts that I have on DVD'S but followed the suggested guidelines for the day. As for the motivational stories...I don't think anyone can get enough of those. They were great.

* Did you enjoy the variety of workouts and recipes?
I did enjoy the variety of recipes. I have a few favorites that I have made for company.

Were any of your quotes featured in the book?
No

* Did you try the 14-day meal plan?
Yes

* Did you make any of the recipes? Which ones did you try?
Yes I did and I have pictures of some of them on my blogs. My all time favorite are the protein pancakes!

Do you think that following this program will help people get good results? Have you already started to feel or see results from using it?
I just love the program. It has showed me what a healthy meal looks like.
I am getting the right amount of fruits, vegetables, carbs and proteins every day now.
I have more energy and my skin looks healthier. I have lost lbs. and in. since starting the program.

I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to lose weight and want to live a healthy lifestyle.

I have really enjoyed the book. It looks like it has had a lot of use not like some diet books I have bought in the past.
I use it daily and have it on hand when I make my meals.
Thank you for writing the book and helping me get me get healthy! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Started reading. Love the book. Easy to read. I think maybe the reason it is set up the way it is, is because they want you just to read up to each day before reading all the stuff ahead so you don't get overwhelmed. My only problem was the shopping list and I had to break down by day so I didn't buy everything on day 1, especially fruits and veggies.

emoticon emoticon Just finishing my first day of the 2 weeks. It was good and I was satisfied with my meal choices. I went through the meals, checking what I had in stock and what I liked. I took small recipe cards and made up cards for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack. Now I know what recipes I liked and have them available in my special recipe box.

I didn't sign up for my coach, will do that tomorrow. How do Sparkers like working with the coaches. I am limited on exercise due to back problems. I do aqua aerobics on Mon-Wed-Fri mornings. I also have a recumbent bike to use, handweights and stretch bands to use.

have a great evening to all emoticon emoticon

Bought the book when it first came out, but just getting started reading it this weekend and starting the program. I love the book; I think the recipes look simple and tasty. I will be doing some substitutions; I want to use much of what is already in my pantry/refrigerator before buying even more. If I can't find the right substitute, then I will grab what is needed at the store.

I agree a montlhy menu would have been nice, but I think you would still need to go look up the recipes. However, if you needed to swap some days around, that would be a big help!

I agree with Rachel, it can be confusing and time consuming to try to find what you're supposed to eat each day. I think it would work better, at least in my opinion, if the meals were listed with recipes linked, rather than scattered like they are. That said, I do love the recipes, it's always nice to have new choices!

Love all the info and recipes. However, it is hard to organize it all, between recipes and days. Also, I made a chart to write in my weekly menu at a glance, it helped me visually see what I was eating each day and would need. Great shopping list and fitness resources!

I really like the Spark Solution and although I considered buying the kindle version I went with the hard cover book. I like to flip back and forth and that is easier with a book.

I have the hardback copy and a graph for the full week might be helpful for review. My wife likes to use posterboard to glace at for things she needs to reminded of. That might help.

I am disappointed that there isn't a simplified easy to read weekly menu...is it just my kindle edition? I can't plan my meals easily I have to read, write, read, write...I would like to see a calendar with the meals and snacks for the week...I am doing it myself but it would've been nice!

I love the book and Spark Coach. I find both highly motivating. I have to tweak the menus but it so comforting that changing things does not penalize me at all. This challenge will be one of the easiest I attempted as this time I feel no pressure (thank for taking that away in you challenge explanation). The Book is the best motivation you have produced so far as it condenses and simplifies everything in Book one "The Spark" which was good. I also plan to order the Vegetable cookbook to download. A whole new way of thinking. A whole new way of enjoying food. Health food.
Good luck and hugs all.

Mushcat, I thought that too about the recipes & the shopping list. It was a lot of new stuff, but after the initial buy, it wasn't that expensive, and really cheaper that the convenience, processed foods that I bought for myself. As for cooking, you'll be surprised how much of it your family and/or just your husband will like. My hubby doesn't need to lose weight at all and he has liked everything I have fixed, sometimes better than I have. If there's something I couldn't find or afford, I left it out or substituted as the book suggests. Try a couple of days, you'll be surprised at the results!

Mushcat, don't be discouraged. Most of the breakfast and lunch options are for 1 or 2 at most. Althought the dinners often are for a family, I my family has found them enjoyable. Last night we made the mac & cheese and everyone loved it. If your family is small (just the 2 of you) freeze in individual servings before baking then you will have them on hand in a week or two. The other thing I have done is work with what I have on hand right now instead of buying everything from scratch. For instance, I garden and had swiss chard growing, so I did not buy the spinich called for. A lot of the fruit is served unprepared, so instead of a large variety I just made sure to have the number of servings of fruit available - since berries are packaged in multiple serving packages. If your grocery store has a bulk food section it is easy to get many raw ingredients in just the quantity needed for the recipes (like the flour or flaxseed).

The best part I have found is the food just tastes like food - nothing weird like many diet "substitutions." The meals are simple enough that I can prepare them after work and we are eating within an hour. And my family's only gripe (beyond seasoning) has been with my insistance they eat the veggies.

Try the pancakes - made with greek yogurt and flour. I made these this morning and my husband loved them. Although I topped mine with apple butter, I let him top his as he saw fit. The serving of two pancakes was enough for me and saw me through until lunch.

You can do this!

Penguinqueen I agree that the book in hand is what I also need so although I have the e-book I ordered the hardcover also. I like being able to make notes of how I tweak a recipe or swap a food and can't wait till the book arrives. Should be today or tomorrow. I am so excited about the challenge. I have been preparing all week. Hope this is a great experience for everyone. Good luck.

I was excited about this challenge and I bought the kindle version. I'm stoked as I read the book, until I peek at the actual plan to follow. I look up the week 1 shopping list and think to myself, this is going to costs me a million dollars. I also found it extremely hard to navigate the book on the kindle version.

I click on one of the day 1 recipes. It serves six. My husband is not joining me on this adventure, so I wonder what am I going to with all the extra since there are new recipes for every day.

I am highly discouraged instead of highly motivated and I have decided not to follow the Spark Solution. I will take the advice I gleened from what I read and take it to heart. I think I can implement the motivation into my life while doing what fits my lifestyle.

I have the Nook book and am making full use of the notes option on my nook. So far, the seasoning on the day 1 and 2 dinners have been too mild for my family taste, so I tripled the cumin on day 2 and bumped up the chili powder by 1/2. It helped. I can see where the paper copy of the book would be handy, but I love my Nook.

I appreciate the lay-out of the chapters and information. It was easy to speed through the details at the beginning and dive in to the plan and I have been going back to review the earlier data as a way to encourage myself along. I have started day 3 today. I think the only draw back to the Nook was resolved with the PDF's of the charts made available when I joined this team.

I havn't done any of the recipes yet, but they look promising and easy!!!! I like the advice to make the recipes and freeze and user friendly to bring to work for lunches..

Over all love it all!

Just do it , keep it in your mind this isn't going to be perfection but a goal to live a clean heatlhy life. As long as you can hit the mark most days you will be successfulI in the long run.

I'm on my 5th week & I'm doing great! I love the recipes, it doesn't feel like a diet & I don't have cravings & I'm not "burned out" on one or more of the foods already!! I've lost 12 lbs. So you can see what kind of review that I have of the book, fantastic, if you follow the guidelines. I stuck to my own exercise routine, because I couldn't do all of the ones in the book & I'm still losing! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I'm reading the book on my Kindle. I find it difficult to follow in this format, no possibility to page back and forth, make notes with pencil, mark page numbers on the back... for reading novels, though, it was great. I guess I need to order the paper version.

Made the Sweet and Creamy English Muffin for breakfast this morning. YUM!! Kept me full for quite awhile and was super easy to make. Trying the granola recipe next! I also found that I've been dropping the weight following the advice that shorter people (I'm only 5 feet) should consume between 1200-1300 calories.
