I have worked in school systems as an OT for 18 years now. I love the work, the kids and the staff are so committed to what is best for the kids. Working as a team member is a strength of mine....I don't like to work in isolation. The downside? I hate the paperwork deadlines! I think it is important to follow your heart in this work, as the work takes all you have to give, so following your heart keeps you sane!

Right now is the right time to begin again!

Hi folks :)
I'm also a COTA, but have not yet worked in the field. I am very torn, because I also love education - specifically Montessori - so, I am expecting that once I complete my Bachelor's this year, I will try to get my Montessori cert. and *teach*.
But, I love OT! I love geriatrics, especially dementia care.
Looking forward to getting to know you all!

I'm currently working as a rehab manager at an ALF. I have been in the ALF setting for the past 5 years. I spent my first 8 years in the SNF setting and I miss it sometimes.

I am a COTA/L. I graduated in May and obtained my certification and license in September, 2013. I have had a very difficult time obtaining employment due to saturation in the area I live in. I have a PRN position at a SNF right now, but they have not called me for work. Most of my experience is in transitional care and DD populations. I am considering taking a position other than a COTA in which I can use my skills. It is very frustrating be a new grad.

Thanks N3WFLOWER :) I will keep you guys posted.

That is what I am hoping for-a job that even when it gets hard, I still love it cuz it's worth it.

Awesome Sarah! Let us know when you start work. It is such a great time to be in the field, lots of opportunities out there.

I became an Academic Fieldwork Coordinator/Instructor about a month ago. Hardest job I ever loved. Learning a lot.

I am not working at an OT yet, as I just recently passed my NBCOT exam and received my licensure, but I would love to work in pediatrics and/or outpatient rehab.

I have a Bachelor's in Non-profit Administration and Business, which I received first, then I went to a two year school to become a COTA, I put some of my history at the beginning of the thread down below. I have a new chapter about to start, but it is not sealed yet so I do not want to reveal it. Once it is I will let you know. I'm excited!

I do take a break in the summer but I am still doing paperwork. I switched jobs to a different school district this year mid year and got really behind! But we went to Maryland to see our son for a week and next week I am going to a church camp retreat. How about you....what have you all done in OT land? Where did you go to school? I went to UW-Madison.

Right now is the right time to begin again!

Awesome Laura! I love kiddos with Autism also. How neat that you have a school and psych background. I imagine you have quite the skill set. Do you take a break in the summer?

I work in a public school. I worked for 2 years in psych and now the last 16 in school systems in Wisconsin. I tried hospital work but that intensity in physical disability of acute care was too intense for me. I love working with kids with autism. OT was something I discovered in my 30's, and I just love the profession the longer I do it. OT is great!

Right now is the right time to begin again!

My specialty is Geriatrics/Home Health. I especially love adults with Developmental Disability. I worked with this population for many years before getting into Occupational Therapy.
