Hi all! Just wanted to say hello. I just moved to Germany a couple months ago and am loving it! Been needing to drop serious weight for a few years now, and I have started in a big way. Mostly thanks to all the walking here and food with out preservatives, and the readily available and affordable produce, but also, because of tracking here at Spark. Anyone on here in Frankfurt? That's where I'm living here. It would be great to get tips from anyone else from there. Good restaurants, cafes, markets, gyms, etc. Always nice to find new places, too! Anyway, My name is Beau. Hello! My German is getting better everyday, but it's a slow burn. Hoping to get that better as time goes by.

Sorry I haven't checked in for a while - school is keeping me very busy...
I've had to make the decision to leave this group. I just don't have the time to be on the computer and need to be up and moving around instead. I'm only keeping 3 of my original teams and even at that, will only check in once a week.
I wish you all well!

Hihi, too funny. I just went back into the attic last Sunday to place a forgotten reef and a door hanger and... I put them in a ziploc and placed it on top of the boxes. Did not have the desire to rummage.

Finally got the last of the Christmas decorations down A wreath that was hanging in an inconspicuous spot, so now we have to pull a box out of storage to put it in. Maybe I'll just put it in a plastic bag on top of the boxes!

Enjoy! In my neighborhood some lights and decorations went up this weekend as well. I'm remodeling my bathroom so I'll be busy otherwise, but I will have a candle up by tonight to light it for the 1st Advent Sunday :)

Busy putting up Christmas decorations. School will be so very busy that if we don't get things up this weekend, chances are good that they won't get up at all. Lots of folks in our neighborhood decorate on Thanksgiving weekend, too, so it's really fun.

Very hard and sad day today. Awoke this morning to a telephone call informing us that a very sweet friend passed away about an hour earlier. Spent the day with the family. It's going to be a tough week.

Well, our Patriots (local football team....I live about 15 minutes away from their home stadium) won the game today and that's good.
Now, I'm trying really hard to watch my diet this week. My exercise is under good control....just need to get the diet doing just as well and then perhaps I'll see that scale move favorably!

Beautiful autumn day here in southern New England! My favorite weather is here - 60-70 during the day and 40-50 at night. No heat or air conditioning needed! This is the time when I have such energy.

Hi Everyone,
I'm new here. I was born in Landshut. My birthfamily (I was adopted at age 3 wks) is in Saarland - specifically, Saarlouis. I actually met my aunt and cousin and her family in the summer of 2009. They were just terrific and can't wait for us to come again.
My German is not very good at the moment, but I'm slowly working on that.
Hello to all and I look forward to getting to know you.

Hello, Sabrina, hope you'll have the possibility to come and visit. I used to live in the area and had a best friend who went to school on Bitburg air base. The town itself is not much to look at, but Trier is very nice. From Bitburg to the Luxemburg border might take about 20 min, and if you should get there, take a look at the old town of Echternach. VERY beautiful!! Home of the "Springprozession" it is a procession in honour of St Willibrord and one does not walk but jumps to special music. I loved doing it while I was at school there.
Have a nice Sunday

I think it's great that you help provide these opportunities for the kids. My chaperoning experience is limited to the times when my kids were in elementary school and trips to various area museums. Furthest I got was up to Sacramento, the Gold Country, and Alcatraz. Made that trip twice, once with each kid. It was lots of fun!

Our trips to Europe include history and fun. Even the Holocaust trip had a few Holocaust sites, such as Auschwitz and the Warsaw Ghetto monument, but other historical sites not related to that time and a lot of fun activities also were included.
My trip this summer is just cultural, so will include gondola rides for the kids in Venice, a meal at the Hofbräuhaus in Munich, and an afternoon at Mt. Pilatus in Lucerne. My last trip to Costa Rica last month was just a BLAST. There we concentrated on lots of activity and fun, including ziplining, white water rafting, kayaking, hiking, etc. So, you see, we try to "mix it up" for our students as much as possible.

Are you kidding? I went to school starting in 69 and we were "treated" to more knowledge than we cared to handle. School field trips in high school were visiting various camps... Fun...

Kricket, I'm kinda surprised to hear you got a lot of holocaust info growing up -- you mean in school? I guess it's a generational thing, in the 50's / 60's it was something nobody talked about..

Hi First time I've posted here. I've been with Spark People since October...I'm a German teacher in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
Getting ready to go to Europe in June, but unlike you guys, I get to go with 82 of my students! Yup, we take 1 chaperone for every 6 kids...I've been doing this for years and love it. Just got back from Costa Rica. I took 37 students there. Last year it was the Holocaust Trip (Germany, Poland, Czech Rep) and next year it's the World War II trip, with a HIstory teacher friend of mine.
As much as I love these trips, it also allows me to go on many other trips with my husband (ohne Schüler) to many other wonderful destinations. This August it will be Ireland.
Some of my favorite spots in the German-speaking areas of Europe are: Lucerne, Switzerland; Berlin; and Salzburg.
Hope you all have a great spring...and happy traveling!

Thanks for thinking of us!
Spring is beautiful here in the CA Bay Area -- the time of year when the golden hills (or perhaps more accurately, brown hills) turn emerald green and a hundred other shades -- just stunning.
Hope you enjoy your spring as well!!

We're planning to visit my parents and brother & family in July. Yes, it's the expensive season but my son is still in school so I don't have a choice. This year the flights are really expensive to begin with, but oh well. Both kids will join me this year, which should be lots of fun. Not so much together time any more as they get older and do their own thing more and more.
Shrlzi, if I were move back to live it would be to my hometown.

Hi -- is anybody here?
If you could go to any German-speaking area to live for a year or two or three, where would you go?
My answer -- back to Zurich, or possibly Berlin-- I know, totally different from each other -- Zurich because I lived there before and loved it, and Berlin because it's my father's city and I think it would be interesting to see what it's like now, and compare it to his stories.

Shrlzi, We usually fly either late May or after Labor Day. In the summer flights to Europe are about 200$ more expensive. May or Sep is called the "shoulder season". Also all of Europe is on the road and in hotels during the summer, that is a time to avoid.
Jutta, Good for you. Isn't the internet wonderful to read news from your hometown. I surprised my sister (who lives in Germany) once by knowing exactly where there was a traffic problem in her hometown. ;-)
Take care all, HD

Wir schweigen alle! We are all silent! How many are on a spiritual retreat with a vow of silence? Or digital silence? Who is going to a German-speaking country this year? Who is already in one? Who is reading a German-lanuage book this year? I just received the Tages-Anzeiger from someone who was in Europe recently -- Does anyone else read a German language paper regularly? cheers, Shrlzi

Well, it is that time of the year again to re-post this cute poem:
T'was the month after Christmas and all through the house - Nothing would fit me, not even a blouse. The cookies I'd nibbled, the eggnog I'd taste. All the holiday parties had gone to my waist.
When I got on the scales there arose such a number! When I walked to the store ( I felt like I carried some lumber.) I'd remember the marvelous meals I'd prepared; The gravies and sauces and beef nicely rare, The wine, and the rum balls, the bread and the cheese And the way I'd never said, "No thank you, please."
As I dressed myself in my husband's old shirt And prepared once again to do battle with dirt--- I said to myself, as I only can "You can't spend a winter disguised as a man!"
So--away with the last of the sour cream dip, Get rid of the fruit cake, every cracker and chip Every last bit of food that I like must be banished Till all the additional ounces have vanished.
I won't have a cookie--not even a lick. I'll want only to chew on a long celery stick. I won't have hot biscuits, or corn bread, or pie, I'll munch on a carrot and quietly cry.
I'm hungry, I'm lonesome, and life is a bore--- But isn't that what January is for? Unable to giggle, no longer a riot. Happy New Year to all and to all a good diet!
(Stolen from the Internet, Author unknown)
Have a Very Merry Christmas all!

Happy Holidays & Fröhliche Weihnachten!
My wife Una made German Christmas Stollen today. The variety that is used in my hometown of Cologne (Köln), it has a marzipan center in it. Can't wait to sample a piece. twitpic.com/tf7fl I wish you all a wonderful time!

Karen, you are quite right, all those areas would be new to me. All I knew then (not having a car, and the subway was under construction) was Schwabing, Uni, English Garden, Marktplatz, Frauenkirche (where we used to go to climb the tower a couple times a week --better than a gym membership!) I live in California (Bay Area) now.

Hello Everyone!
It has been a while since I posted here last. Forgive me. I usually post more in the German column.
Well, we had a great trip to Japan. It was glorious. I really like that country. It is so modern, yet so ancient and traditional at the same time.
Pictures of our trip can be viewed here: is.gd/5djhs
So how is everyone here? Are you all ready for the Holidays?
I wish you a wonderful weekend! HD

Gabi, congratulations on your anniversary with Sparkpeople. You've done great.
I also want to wish everyone a very happe Thanksgiving Day. I won't be cooking because I'll be at work all day. We've been invited to dinner though.

HD - Sometimes I think that beyond the fright of having to consider cancer as a real possibility, it is the abject frustration with doctors that always seem to be on a different time constraint than the patient which makes this sort of thing so very stressful...I am crosing my fingers and keeping you in my prayers....Gabi

THANK YOU! This month I am focused on integrating my fitness schedule with my studies - That way I can be both sound of mind AND body! I know as the pressure cranks up to do well in school the release hufs1I find at the YMCA will be that much more important. Besides mastering this new element of time management has alreay started to pay dividends in boosting my self esteem. And I still have a LONG way to.
Gabi, Kudos to you on 42-1/2 pounds less! And good wishes to you for success in school and at the Y!

Rena, welcome! What took you back to Germany, then? Are you going to school, working? Inquiring minds want to know!

Hello, I am Rena. Unlike the name I actually live near Heilbronn.
I had attempted to write an intro in German, but ended up deleting it lol. I read it pretty well, but really struggle with writing.
