I took three years of German in high school, and I bought the first three Harry Potter books in German. Since I read the books many times in English, it made it easier for me to understand the German.
Then I did study abroad, and I knew all these words about witches and wizards, but could not tell my host mom how I wanted my pizza cut. LOL.
But I got there, and so will you!
I taught German 101, would be happy to answer any questions. :)

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant,
gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?

Here ist eine Seite, die Euch die Instruktionen gibt, die verschiedenen DVD players umzuschalten. Vielleicht ist Euer Apparat schon drauf:

Black Falcon et al.,
There is a very cheap DVD player by COBY that comes with a plain sheet of paper with a mysterious series of numbers to press on the remote control. The effect: after you have pressed all the numbers, it will play any DVD of any region code. Magic!

If the paper is not in the box, info is on the web.

The idea with DVDs in German language is not bad at all, BUT you have to pay attention when buying a DVD player or a DVD - a lot of them are regionally coded. I bought a DVD series of my favorite German TV show once, brought them over to the United States, put them in my DVD player...

... and boy, was I suprised. And not positively suprised, I might add.

I used the DVD-method back in the day to improve my english skills a lot.

Here's what you should do, lass. First, watch the movie in English - German subtitles. Then German - English subtitles. Then German with German subtitles.

Believe me - it works.

Julia, wir koennen ihr sehr viel helfen, aber da sie Schwierigkeiten mit der Unterhaltung hat, ist es auch wichtig, dass sie persoenlichen Kontakt mit Leuten hat. Vielleicht findet sie eine deutsche auf der Uni oder in der Umgebung.

Das waere viel besser fuer sie.

When I learned English in high school, my teacher drummed it into us that we had to think in English. No German word was allowed. It would be great if you could get together with a German on a regular basis to practice your conversation. I had that opportunity when I babysat for an American couple in Berlin who were military (the husband was).

I The wife wanted to learn German and we decided t hat I would speak English and she would respond in
German. We corrected each other immediately. It worked well for us. She can still hold a conversation in German. Our friendship lasted 44 years.

I remember when I read my first novel written in English. I had a dictionary right next to it and looked up the word I did not understand and then repeated the sentence over and over until it became "natural".

Dein Deutsch ist gar nicht so schlecht! Du machst Dich verständlich, das ist die Hauptsache!

Your ideas about DVDs and books on tape are great, that will help you understand spoken German and especially if you watch current TV shows or movies, you will get a feel for casual conversation.

Here's my favorite technique: get a book, and a book on tape of it. Listen, then read as you listen, and underline **every** word you don't know, even if you think you know what the sentence means without it. Even if you *think* you know what it means but you're not absolutely sure. If you are like me, you will start out with about 20 words per page.

Put all the words on flash cards. Look up each one ( http://dict.leo.org is a great resource), write the translation on the back, and try to memorize them all.

The next day, test yourself. If you know the word, put it in Pile 1, if you don't, put it in Pile 2.

Every week or so, test yourself again on Pile 1, and mark the cards of the words you know with a checkmark. Put the words you don't know into Pile 2.

When a Pile 1 card has 3 or 4 checkmarks, put it aside into Pile 3, and re-test in 3-4 weeks. If you still know it, archive it. If you have forgotten it, cross out the checkmarks and put it back in Pile 1.

If that sounds confusing, feel free to write me with questions.

Eine frage, bitte. Mein deutsch ist nicht so gut. Ich habe drei jahren im High School klassen, und ein Semester im Uni klassen (201 level). Mein problem ist meine Vokabeln. Es ist sehr, sehr schlecht! Wie kann ich verbessern? Ich kann nicht ein anderen Deutschklasse nehmen.

English (just incase I totally screwed that up, and for further explaination).

I've taken 3 years of high school German, and a semester of College German at 201 level. I also spent a month in Germany "studying abroad". I would very much like to improve my German, so that I can speak and understand more conversationally. I really can't take German 202 until I further my understanding some more. My main problem is my vocabulary. I completely forget what words mean. Even the basics I have forgotten mostly! :( What would be your suggestions to improve? I am going to attempt to watch movies I've already seen in English, and watch them in German, and also listen to audio books of books I've already read? Maybe read some books?

GO TEAM! YOU CAN DO IT!
