there are a lot of dvds out now that feature the high intensity interval training that JJ recommends. I have been using the firm for years. they have a set with 13 dvds so it never gets boring and the girls are very cheerful and upbeat. I have had it for about 2 years and still use it regularly.

Zakame, congrats on not cheating! I am on week one also...anyway I have been still tracking my food with the Lose It! app. and i noticed the day that i felt really hungry, it was because the soup i had made for lunch while it seemed really filling for an hour was under 300 calories. Also i have noticed that most of the powder mixes only have about 15gs of protein and 100-200 calories...making it necessary to use two scoops.
I splurged on the $10/lb wild sockeye...it was the best tasting piece of fish i have ever had. finding lean clean protein on a budget will be tricky.

Hello THATLLPREACH
I just recently bought a shaker cup specifically made for on the go. It also has a pill minder and cup for your dry mix that attaches to the bottom. I bought specifically for travelling. It doesn't chew up my chia seeds like my vitamix but I'll just have to get past that or use something else. This you could even have ready in the fridge to grab quick on your way out the door. I would take some healthy muffins for an easy breakfast or snacks. Here is a pintrest site that may help, I just did a google search for no egg or dairy muffins and this came up. Hope it helps. http://pinterest.com/heather_artiste/vegan

Thank you all so much on the help with up-ing calories. I think I've discovered part of the problem is a really wacky schedule. Got caught yesterday with no way to make a shake or grab something healthy so ended up with a shake at 1:00 in the afternoon, some almonds at 2:00 and . . . yup, that was about it for the day! NOT GOOD!! I need to plan ahead way better.

But here is yet another obstacle looming in my future. I can get through my daughter's graduation party (I'm planning the menu to suit me!!) But during the first week of re-introducing foods, we are going on vacation - camping - with no electricity. I'm not going to be able to do the shakes. HELP!!!!! I'm trying to think of the easiest two foods to bring back in so that campfire menus are a little easier. We're cooking for 4 teenagers as well. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Usually your body needs at least 1300 calories a day.

First make sure you are being completely honest on your portion sizes when you log it (the tracker on spark people is great). If you are logging the right portion sizes and not leaving anything out there are many ways to up your calories. It hard to say when I don't know much of what you are eating and how many times you are eating right now. For your shakes you can try and add vegetable to your shake like spinach, kale, broccoli, and other vegetables (i find the green variety mix the best). For your meals maybe try adding more vegetables also or add a serving of rice or quinoa to your meal if you are not already. Also if you are cooking something use a tbsp of olive oil or coconut oil. this will add about 120 calories. hopefully you have at least 3 meals a day. Also i saw you do already snack on nuts which is another good way to up your calories. I think one thing you shouldn't focus on with the tracker is the type of calories. I think its more important that you get your minimum calories although you should limit foods such as fruit that are high in sugar as they will spike your insulin.

I keep my sugar to 5 gms or less per meal, otherwise the sugars, even fruit sugars, start messing with insulin resistance and a host of other functions.

I eat a lot of oranges and apples, there are 21 carbs in each of them. Probably more sugar then I should have but sugar is not a problem for me. I have to have my fruit.

Thanks ININDIANA! I have been snacking on nuts, but the trouble with nuts is they up my fat. According to the tracker I am to low on carbs. I think I read that someone added oats to their shake. Has anyone really tried that or am I imagining?

Hi THATLLPREACH

I'm guessing for your current weight you should be consuming more calories. I use the nutrition tracker on Sparkpeople and it tells me how many calories I should be eating everyday. They also give me tips on how to up my calorie intake. Adding healthy nuts. Let me know how that goes. Sheryl

I have a question. In the past week, as I have logged my food on the tracker, I come in between 800 and 1000 calories. I'm not sure if this is where I should be for these three weeks or if I need to bump up something, but what?? Any help out there? Wisdom? Experience?

I'm with you 100% on this not just being about losing weight... It's also about all the health benefits that come along with it... My BP is also down into the 110/68 range, my joints don't hurt anymore, and that embarrassing gas and bloating is GONE!!! Of course, the weight loss is also nice. *grin* Down 40 pounds and counting. Everyone really has to be mindful of all the forbidden foods hidden inside of anything and everything processed. Reading the label and knowing what it says is a big key. emoticon
You are so right Hen, it is definitely worth the effort and there is more out there to eat then most people think. I think that once you heal your body on the inside and have lost your weight there may be room for an indulgence here and there, but you probably won't want to. For the most part I just feel our bodies are over polluted with all the chemicals and garbage we consume. For me it isn't just about the weight but also numerous health concerns. The jury is still out but I've reduced my blood pressure and I don't have the angina attacks that I use to have. I am also hypothyroid, even on medication, it has been impossible to lose a pound a week let alone 7 pounds the first week. emoticon

Welcome back Suze... You're right - It is worth it!!! I just finished the last of Cycle 2 and am thinking I'll just pop back to Cycle 1 for awhile... There are so many good things to eat, without the 7 Hi Fi foods... I too enjoy the shakes, although I make mine Green Smoothies... I still have several pounds I'd like to lose, and am quite happy going back on Cycle 1.

Starting another 21 day round tomorrow. Ate some of the dreaded 7 including sugar, artificial sweetener, a little pizza crust...so that would be bread. Stress lead me to it and I caved. I do know that I feel great when I am eating very clean and did not have any infractions for a 29 days....so I will do it again and hopefully get rid of these five pounds when I start running again too. I really enjoy the shakes I make. They are delicious!!!

Keep it up everyone! It is soooo worth it!!

Hello: On Day 6. Don't have the book yet. I been eating (what I thought) was pretty healthy for years. But, no matter what I do, I can't lose weight. Tried WW and would be disappointed to sticking to program, working out and losing .10 a week. I'm so hoping this program works. Until I get the book, I do have question. I see we can have nuts, but do the nuts have to be raw?

Hello, just started the virgin diet. I've been having stomach problems ever since I switched my diet 6 years ago to start losing weight. Biggest foods I think affecting me are dairy and eggs..I ate them far too often over the last years and I'm almost positive I have an intolerance to them. I get bloated and gassy after eating them for several days.
ANYWAYS...I have a big question. Has anyone gotten bloated, constipated and gained weight the first few days?? That happened to me and it seems like some of it has passed today..its only been 2-3 days so I know I need to give it time...just seemed like everyone lost weight quickly.

LET'S DO THIS!

The great news is, when you do get rid of the sugar, you will feel SO much better!!! It still amazes me, how much better I feel, since I ditched the Hi Fi foods... Hang in there, it's so worth it!!! emoticon

Good Morning SOLMARSAIL & ESKIELOVER52 - emoticon

At the top left of the screen, you'll find a TRACKER button... That will take you to all kind of things you can track, from food to fitness.

Some teams post daily... This one is pretty hit and miss, but I enjoy hanging out here just the same... You'll find some great information by reading some of the previous posts.

Best of luck on your new way of life!!!

Good morning, everyone. I haven't officially started The Virgin Diet but hope to start eliminating the 7 foods today anyway. I had to order a different protein powder yesterday as the one I previously bought had changed their formula and now has fermented soy as an ingredient. Hopefully it'll be here next week so I can start the shakes.

I'm happy to find a support system! I've never been on sparkpeople before, so it may take a while for me to find my way around here. Do most of you post daily? Is there a place to track your food?

Looking forward to getting acquainted with everyone.Right now I need to get ready for work...

The great thing on this plan, is that soon (within a week, for me) your cravings lose their power over you... Once you get those HI FI trigger foods out of your system, you no longer crave them... At least that's the way it happened for me, and I'm sure it'll work for you too!!!

No, I'm using vanilla rice protein powder I found on amazon. I'm putting hemp hearts and flax seed in with it. And then of course almond milk and berries. It's pretty good. I just finished my first one.

Hi all! I'm new around here. On day 4 for Cycle 1. Mostly cranky the last two days but losing 4 pounds kind of evens it out. My protein powder finally arrived today so I look forward to trying out a shake in the morning. Nice to meet you all! emoticon

Well, today is DAY TWENTY-TWO on the Virgin Diet, and I'm planning to move on to Cycle 2. I've only lost 7 pounds in 21 days, rather than 7 in 7, but that's okay. I can see and feel a difference, and as long as I'm letting go of fat instead of gaining, I'm happy. My husband Dave has lost 12 pounds in the same amount of time.

I'm looking forward to challenging the soy, gluten, dairy and eggs to see what can be added back in and what can't. I'm still ambivalent about this as a lifetime eating plan. Not that I'm suffering in any way of it, just that it still feels limiting and kinda boring. As I've said before, though, I'm not much of a cook and have been eating the same things over & over again. I need to look for recipes. (I don't know how to find the Virgin Diet recipes people have posted on SparkPeople--how do I do that?)

You'll find me next on the Cycle 2 topic!

Glad to hear you and getting something positive from this new eating plan. I find having 2 shakes a day helps. Usually I have a shake in the morning and then have a lunch 6 hours later and then for dinner I have a shake. I think it helps the body to having a shake for the last meal (especially since I go to sleep 2 hours after) So the body has something easier to digest before bed time. Sometimes it takes time for the body to heal. Even now when I didn't think I could keep losing weight (although I kept telling my mind that I could), I keep dropping weight.

Last week I did have one spoon full of chili. It had broth in it which I found out after had barley in it (gluten). I was astounded by how little gluten effected me so badly. I felt super dehydrated after and couldn't get enough water in my body and put on around 7 lbs over night and became extremely bloated. After a few days my weight went back down, and then some. I am pretty sure it was that as I don't think there was that much sea salt in the cabbage soup I ate. I did not know my body reacted so badly to gluten.

Sometimes you may not feel that much different after taking out the foods, but sometimes when you try and test the foods later, your body may react very negatively to it.

It is great to feel empowered and feel great that you are doing something positive for your body and health.

Thanks. I do feel pretty good and I will pay attention more to portions and will try to do two shake meals. Gasp. Had success eating out twice and not getting derailed, but asked questions and got the cleanest food possible on the menu. Felt very empowered!

Here's to a good week for everyone!

Excellent advice Barb. Weight loss should only be secondary. If you focus on weight loss and stress yourself out, your body is more likely to hold onto it. You have to imagine yourself losing weight and at your ideal to get your brain to operate with your body with what you want it to do.
Also depending on how much you need to lose can make a difference. Hopefully you are feeling something else positive, as it truly is a new way of living

While I'm here, I'll just report that Dave and I are on Day Twelve of the Virgin Diet plan, with no slips so far. I haven't weighed myself again, but I look less flabby in the mirror, so I guess I'm still losing weight. Yay!

Last night I went to a rehearsal for my chorus, and people brought all kinds of yummies, including handmade chocolates. Oh, I yearned to try the chocolate! But I didn't want to sabotage my progress. Instead I had one section of a fresh orange brought from Florida the day before--wow, was it sweet after having no sugar this long! I also took one homemade cookie, brought it home and froze it. I'll maybe have it sometime in the future when I've challenged wheat and can have sugar occasionally.

Hi Martha, Congrats for sticking to the Virgin Diet even though you're not getting the results right now that you'd hoped for. It's a healthy way to eat, so that's a reward in itself. Are you noticing any other benefits? Such as looser clothes, better skin, less aches & pains? Our bodies are all different, perhaps yours will suddenly dump a bunch of pounds at once. Or perhaps you need to look at portion sizes in your two balanced meals a day.Or you could try doing a week of two shakes a day. Also, consider your stress levels: if your stress is high, your cortisol levels might be raised, which makes it hard to release weight. Just some thoughts. I encourage you to keep doing it, and keep posting! Best of luck!

Hi I am on Day 7 of Cycle 1. I have not lost anything yet and have not had any of the seven deadly sins foods. I am doing the shake in the am and balanced meals for lunch and dinner. I do not eat much of the foods anyway; minimal dairy, only sprouted wheat products and not a lot of that, no soy or corn intentionally (it sure sneaks into processed food products though!) I am drinking my water and doing fiber so not sure what is amiss here.

Maybe cuz the food eliminations are not so dramatic for me? HELP!!

No problem about the spelling of my name :). Happy to hear the success you and your hubby are having. I posted quite a few recipes on here. I will try and put some more up there for you if I get a chance.

Sorry I spelled your name wrong, DanaW..

Now I'm on day Nine of the first Cycle. Dave and I weighed ourselves Monday night, a week after the last time. Dave has lost TEN pounds in one week! He's had to tighten his belt a notch. I'm proud of him! I lost a more modest three pounds, less than I'd secretly hoped. But, honestly, three pounds in a week is just fine, given that I haven't been struggling a bit with the weight loss. Also, this first cycle is really about getting ready to find out about any intolerances I have, so the weight loss is just a bonus! (or, so I'm trying to think!)

We need to look at the recipes people have posted, since we're eating the same stuff too often and it's getting boring. (Not the shakes, luckily.) I'm thankful to "those who've gone before" for posting recipes.

How's everyone else doing in cycle one?

Awsome to hear how well you and your hubby are doing so early on in the plan. I Have been on the plan for almost 2 months now and I still love it. I only tested eggs and decided just to stick to phase one for awhile as I am pretty positive I cant eat the others and don't really feel the need to. I like how you add vegetables to your shake also. It can help quite a bit. I think everyone is different especially when it comes to the cravings, but its great you are having a pretty easy time with that right now. I think it helps because you are feeding your body more nutritious foods and you are keeping your blood sugar stable.

Hope you continue the success and reap the rewards of this new plan.

It's now almost the beginning of DAY FIVE of Cycle One. Thanks for the supportive messages. My hubby and I are both doing well. We're only weighing once a week, but I can tell I've lost at least a little flab, because my stomach is flatter (less bloat) and I hooked my bra one hook-and-eye row tighter!

I've been varying my shakes with different kinds of berries and alternating between kale and spinach as the green ingredient. Those shakes are so filling! I'd meant to have two shakes a day, but I'm so full I've only managed one a day, plus one small meal and a snack, each day so far. It's good to know I could eat more if I wanted. I've never before been so un-hungry when actively trying to lose weight. So far I've been able to turn down offered pizza, cake and cookies, and not have a hard time.

I have felt some cravings, though. It's been weird to crave food when I'm so full-feeling. I can't identify what I'm craving, perhaps just eating itself, just filling my mouth with food over & over. I've felt the way I do before a binge, but with nothing in my mind that I want. At those times, I just keep checking in with my stomach and it keeps saying "I'm perfectly fine, not hungry" so I've been able not to eat. I think this might get harder before it gets easier, since it's still very early days yet with this eating plan.

What I've been eating besides the shakes: beans/rice/chicken dish, salad, apples, walnuts, rice cakes with avocado or hummus, peppers, turkey roll-ups in brown rice tortillas.

Anyone else at about the same place as me on Cycle One?

That's why I can it an eating PLAN. Or just that I have a new, better way of eating. It is not a diet, its a lifestyle change. Congrats on starting the new plan today. It helps having your partner do it with you. I think it makes it easier to continue doing it. It was the hubby who didn't want to test foods yet and to wait longer and let the body heal a little more first. Anyway good luck to the two of you and I am sure you two will learn so much from each other and learn so much about yourself.

Today is my long-awaited FIRST day of Cycle One. I've posted a bit here and there and have been reading everyones' experiences while DH and I got ready to do this. I'm so glad he's doing it with me; it will make it much easier if we're eating the same foods.

So, I've had my Virgin Shake this morning: blueberries & kale with the Vanilla powder, also some flaxseeds. Kinda disappointing that with a whole cup of berries, all I could really taste was the vanilla. (I LOVE blueberries!) I plan to go with 2 shakes a day for at least the first week, but I wonder if I'll get really tired of it, even doing different berries.

I think I have a sensitivity to chocolate, so I'm not going to try the chai or chocolate flavors of the shake powder. Too bad, because I love chocolate, too.

I'm excited to find out what my husband Dave and I can learn about ourselves by doing this diet (though like others here I don't like that word!) Both of us have over 50 pounds to lose.
Wish us luck!

Still sailing along on Cycle 1 for the second time. I'm down a total of 14 pounds so far since starting the JJVD. Not as much as I had hoped for by now but I guess 14 pounds in 30 days isn't too bad.

I know what you mean about adding foods back in. I guess that's why I'm repeating Cycle 1.
I did so well the first 21 days that I'm afraid adding ANYTHING back will mess things up.

JJ was right in the book. Once you take those foods out and you feel how much better you feel, you don't want to add them back in. Day 32 for me. Tested eggs one day and that's it.

Glad you are having a good experience, DIVAMAMA. I was super surprised that I never experienced a headache or moodiness like I have always had with other diets.

I am 2 days into Cycle 1 (repeating again) and down a total of 12 pounds! I am VERY pleased!

Ok... it's day 3 of cycle 1 for me and I feel absolutely great. On day 2 and 3, I experienced some minor headaches but that is an expected response as my body adjusts to this new way of eating. However, I am completely satisfied, full of energy and balanced overall. I feel like I did before children (lol). No seriously, I am enjoying this new chapter of my life and looking forward to the days ahead. I have lost 3 lbs already to boot!!! emoticon

I have to agree, DANA, about the sugar. I have also noticed that I am more optimistic and just overall happier!

I think it works so great because there's little sugar. This allows you to balance your blood sugar levels. She simplifies servings so it helps avoid over eating. I think it's great that you are also staying on cycle one.

One think hubby noticed yesterday was he feels less depressed. He is happier and more optimistic (he is a bit of a pessimistic). It is amazing to see this for him. It was because of him we are staying on cycle one

Well, yesterday was Day 21 for me on Cycle 1. During the last 3 weeks I have lost 11 pounds and some inches (I didn't measure but my clothes are looser). I definitely feel much better...not as down and lethargic as before. I also believe my skin has even improved.

I did so well that I think at this point I'm going to do Cycle 1 over again before I try to reintroduce any of the 7 foods back into my diet. The most important thing this diet has taught me, is portion control. I've always had a problem with that and I have no idea why the JJVD has finally changed that for me, but it has. I also have a new respect for good, healthy food.

I think I am just going to move on I think. I don't want to slow down weight loss if I am pretty sure I can't have it. I will try it again at some point. I really want to be down 20lbs by Vday. About 7 more to go.

I first started to notice the reaction about an hour and a half after I ate them. I was very nauseous and had a headache in the back of my head. It's the same symptoms I used to get from eating bad tofu. Not fun!

Are you going to try another egg meal tomorrow? I did that to confirm, even though I was very sick from it again! LOL At least now I know for sure.

How did the eggs make you feel? Day 1 and I don't feel great after eating the eggs, but I don't feel horrible. How long did it take the symptoms to show up? I poted my reactions in the cycle 2 thread.

Well, I guess I'm back to being Vegan again. I had not planned on adding in any dairy, but I wanted to add eggs. I've been testing them and now I found out I have a 4-day sensitivity to them. I never knew I had a problem with eggs!! JJ says if you react on the 4th day, you could eat them every 4 days or once a week with no problems. The way I feel right now, I don't want to chance it. I called my twin (the one that has her own chickens) and she said, "Oh yeah, I can only eat them about once a week because I get bad stomachaches from them." I never knew that! LOL

We're going to try gluten next. I would love to have regular whole wheat flour once in awhile. My egg test actually went one day longer because we had some leftovers. But, I'm glad I confirmed it!! Three more days until we try gluten.

DanaWutzke, I did the "stupid vegan" high carb diet for many years. I ballooned up to 190 pounds by eating too many bad carbs and "Frankenfood" (processed fake meat soy products). We started eating the "Eat To Live" way (Joel Fuhrman) and I dropped most of that weight. We put the veggies back into our vegetarian diet. ;)

How is everyone else doing?

The hubby got me to be vegan for about a year. I found I ended up eating too many carbs to get the protein my body needed. My body prefers lower carbs and lean protein. We didn't eat egg. I prefer to focus on plant base but also have protein. Meat is also the only complete amino acid. I just didnt find it worked that well for my body. It did make me more aware of foods though and made me a better cook. I still stayed away from flour and found better alternatives.
