I've been trying new food combinations and focusing on more vegetables with bean and rice conbinations this week. I have noticed on my tracker that I am consuming less and less protien. Does anyone have any ideas what I can do without using protien powders or substitutes to add more non meat protiens items to my diet so my protien ranges can get back into the recommended ranges again.

To me HEALTH means Energy. Stamina. Flexibilty. A relatively pain free body. Enjoying healthy food. You are your body, and your weight loss efforts will succeed exactly to the extent that you mange to do the work on behalf of your embodied self. You’ll do much better when you focus on making positive changes to improve your health and well-being, rather than on fighting your bad habits.

Hi thanks for the info. I was feeling a little discouraged. some non weight things were not going well and i was waffling on my exercise plan. My overall mood tends to affect my weight. I get stressed out sometime. I am unable to work right now and that is an issue for me. financially i need to work so that is always a source of stress. your answer helped me kind of refocus. Thanks

It's not unusual to gain weight when you start exercising. Go to the search bar & search for the articles on weight gain while exercising. It happens to me every single time! I also suggest reading articles about non-scale victories. The scale fails to measure so many really important things about health. SP frequently advises not weighing in for a few weeks because improvements are being made in your health & body, but the scale isn't the best tool to report that. Hang in there..stay dedicated & pro-active. And read the great SP info!!! It's awesome!

There's also a place where you can look up specific topics such as medical conditions or perhaps precautions while using blood thinners. And of course, your doctor's nurse would be a good source of advice, too.

I would not worry about 2 pounds. If your feeling other changes your weight will catch up. As for veggies and blood thinners I am not sure. Hopefully someone else will have advise on that.

I just started this challenge. i hope it will help me. I have been logging my food and on the thirty day ten minute exercise challenge. I have mobility issues so I am limited in the exercises that I can do. I gained 2 lbs over the last 2 weeks. I was very surprised because I was feeling so much better and so many things improved about my body. I was very distressed about the 2 lbs. I am trying not to let it derail me. I am also limited in the amount of veggies I can eat because I am on blood thinners. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

One of my coworkers heard me mention that my trainer would like me to cut a lot of my sugars out of my diet. He just handed me a think Thin nutrition bar. Anyone try these? Have any issues with it?

I used spark coach for a while. You get a lot of information and ideas. If you need the extra motivation it might be helpful. You get a video or article to read every day and you can write a spark coach and get an e-mail back.

Congrats on finishing the challenge and best of luck on your journey!

With SP, you are never too late for a challenge...there is always one suitable for you both in terms of exercise as well as food and lifestyle. Good luck!

My question today: can I still have a cheat day during this holiday week. The food is just too tempting!

Here is a copy of the welcome e-mail!

Welcome to SparkPeople's Official "Eat Up, Slim Down" Challenge. When you joined this Team, you started a series of 4 weekly emails that provides action steps and tips to complete the challenge. You can always check the weekly e-mail information on the weekly links on the team page as well.

You can discuss this challenge and your progress along the way and offer support and tips for others in the SparkTeam message boards. Pay special attention to the "Sticky" topics set by your Team Leaders. These include important info to help you make the most of this challenge.

To earn your SparkTrophy at the end of these four weeks, you must track your progress in the box at the top of our Team page. Simply check the box next to each week's action steps to show you completed them. We've also set up some Team goals (near the bottom of the Team page) that are optional if you'd like to track them; doing so will help you get more out of this challenge, but isn't essential to earning your trophy.

Good luck on your Challenge!

Sorry ladies I was on vacation for bit. I am not sure why your are not getting your new e-mails when you join. I will contact someone at SP.

If you start on the main page for this challenge you will see each of 4 weeks listed. If you click on week 1 for example it will give you a list of what you need to do for that week. After you complete that week (if it takes you longer that is ok) click that you have completed it. Then after all 4 are completed you will receive your trophy!

I joined this challenge today and have not received an e-mail yet either, which doesn't help me begin today. I made sure the "send weekly challenge e-mails" was checked and still nothing. It also seems no one reply's to the questions here either. Is this an inactive team/challenge?

METALJEN73 - thanks for the info! That's so funny - because I came home from an hour and a half of strength training at the gym, and I ate a banana - and STIR FRY~ ha ha - I didn't even know that was on the list, I just knew it sounded good! I'm going to make a grocery list, and keep these items stocked in my fridge and cupboards~ Awesome sauce~

LM.JACKSON – I am a veggie lover too! My problem is eating enough fruit, there’s a lot of things I don’t like and even more that I think I am in the mood for when I buy them, but then they just sit uneaten in the fridge. I haven’t been drinking enough water, either, I live on coffee and Monsters.

SP_COACH_TANYA – thanks for the article on protein. I’m not a vegetarian but I am looking for ways to get more protein in my diet. I have a question, I posted it on my blog but never got an answer – I go for 45-60 minute walks with my boyfriend’s dog about 4-5 times per week and someone told me it’s good to eat a banana after a walk. I did that today, but then I also ate an egg white omelette with turkey sausage, tomatoes, spinach, fat-free cheese, salsa, imitation crab meat and ½ cup of hashbrowns. Is that a good post-workout breakfast? I don’t know where I heard it, but that it’s good to eat protein after a workout? Is that true?

THEHEALTHMASTER – when I go to Subway I either get a flatbread or I get whatever sandwich I want turned into a salad – the Buffalo Chicken is good with spinach for the lettuce (that iceburg stuff has no nutrition in it!), and I get the low-cal Sweet Onion for my dressing. It’s delicioso!~ I just realized this, but I can't remember the last time I went to McDonald's or Burger King - OMG!* That's a huge weakness for me, too!

GET2BEFIT – how often are you weighing yourself? I know, personally, I fight with that thing nonstop and my roommates have threatened to take it away from me because I weigh myself every 2-3 days instead of once per week like I’m supposed to. I’m obsessed with it! Higher numbers do NOT represent defeat. Your body is going to change depending on your menstrual cycle, water weight, what time it is, when you ate last, all sorts of things. It’s just a number. What you should focus on is how you feel (I’m preaching to the choir here, FYI, just repeating what my roommates tell ME!), how your clothes fit, how much energy you have, etc. and make small changes that you can actually stick with for the long haul, because if you just make a bunch of rapid changes and then don’t follow through with them, the weight will come back. Make sure you record your accomplishments! I have a note on my mirror that says “NO AON GIRL! EVERY WORKOUT COUNTS!” – AON Girl is “All-Or-Nothing” – I have been so hard on myself for the days I only exercise 30 minutes, instead of 45 or 60. It doesn’t matter if it’s 5 minutes, if I get my heart rate up and break a sweat, it counts. I think a lot of times we (especially women) beat ourselves up and what we see is so much worse than what other people see. I wish you the best of luck and if you need some support, I got ya back! *hugs*

Don't be so hard on yourself!!!!! Life gets in the way sometimes. I think you should be proud of coming back to refocus!!!!! Besides, I seriously doubt anyone doesn't experience being a human yo-yo, you will get there!!! I fell off the wagon many many times, hell I STILL do, which is why I average a loss rate of 1-2 lbs a MONTH right now LOL.

Keep your chin up and smile!

PS. There is no such thing as FAILURE, only LEARNING EXPERIENCES. emoticon

Had to edit because I forgot to mention that I read somewhere on here that mixing a bit of juice with club soda would help substitute for regular soda.... maybe that would work for you? I do it occasionally when that urge just wont go away and actually like it, and the calories stay fairly low because it only takes a couple ounces of juice.

I continue to surprise myself. Im guessing it's been AT LEAST 6 months or longer since my last log-in here and my weight gains as result. To my surprise, I lost 2 lbs this week, amidst eating last piece birthday cake Friday night! My goal is to not eat red meat, only special occasions --- like Grandma's 95th birthday I count as special occasion, that was in January, my birthday was April 30th and I had 8 oz sirloin----- so relatives' birthdays and national holidays I consider special occasions --- my toughest challenge is trying to find something other than soda to control soda. I drank 4 bottles water today and if I have another tonight it'll be 5 bottles but it doesn't stop me craving for it. I tried making a smoothie, and it was great! it was great but some of it spilled and only got 1 cup out of it.

I'm gonna try coming back here on a regular basis here. I'm afraid to use the weight tracker because it'll show a weight gain. Last time I weighed I was 202 pounds (I'm guessing). A week ago today I weighed 230 and today I weighed 228. higher numbers represent defeat, lower numbers are progressand i don't want defeat staring at me if I record the weight gain. doubt I will record it, its depressing just thinking bout it.

Tammay I too went from vegetarian and chose to convert to a 100% plant based diet ( not really vegan because I eat honey.) I found out that when I focused solely on calories I became tired and hungry all the time! Vegans need to make sure to consume plenty of good fats and protein, and many of those sources - avocado, olive oil, nuts, seeds, etc are pretty high in calories!! It freaked me out a bit!! LOL However, when I focused on whole foods and consuming proper nutrients my calorie intake increased, but so did my energy, and I really started to lose pounds steadily without trying.

Here's a link to a list of foods high in potassium:

es/food-sources-of-potassium.php

and the link for foods with calcium:
http://www.healthaliciousness.com/articl

most of the foods are low in calories and have fiber so you don't eat a lot to feel full.

Hi LOLY20. You can have your soup at any time you want. There is not such a thing that we need to be awake to digest the food. The food is going to be digested anyway. The only thing that you need to check out is how you feel. Listen to your body. If you have acid reflux, maybe you can use more pillows when you eat late at night.
Is a lot better to have the soup and feel satisfied than to keep awake feeling hungry.

Tammay, I'm with you. I just joined this challenge but don't want to actually start until May 1st. As long as we are doing the challenge, I'm sure that will be ok.

Loly - keep in mind chicken soup usually contains a lot of sodium, so if you eat it late at night and weigh in the morning, it will probably show a temporary gain.

Still waiting to find out exactly what week one involves. This info should not be so hard to come by! How about simply including it in the email that's sent when we join, and spelling it out more clearly?

If week one does mean that we must stay within the guideline limits, I will drop out. When I try to stay below 2000 calories, I get hungry and eat after supper, which is what I most need to stop!

Hi There,
I just joined the challenge because I really feel like I need to focus on eating whole foods and less on counting calories. I'm a vegan (or more of a vegetarian who has been trying to eat vegan for a while).

Here's my question: Although I signed up for the challenge, I won't be starting until May 1. So I'll just be reading posts and articles for the time being. I noticed that there are weekly to-dos that you checkmark on the main page. Can I start this whenever I want, since I don't plan on starting until May 1?

Thank you!

Rotem

Here is the link to the Week 1 challenge. Am I correct that all we're supposed to do is read the article, track our food, and stay within our limits? The limits will be my challenge. I've gone over every day and actually raised my goal weight so I wouldn't be required to eat so little. I don't think I could ever consistently stay below 1500. 2000 is hard enough! I'm also concerned about the issue of having to lower intake when you reach a long plateau; that made me want to have higher limits to begin with. I will try, though! http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/challen

i think there's enough to count as one serving; not one serving of spinach, but in total. You could always bring some vegies from home if you're worried. When I was working I always brought my lunch and snacks. They weren't healthy back then, but they were cheaper, faster, and tastier! Once a week I went to my favorite restaurant, a small local Szechwan spot that I dearly miss!

Curious on your thoughts. I was ordering a 6" Sub from Subway. Of course I'm trying to be healthy and looking at calories, nutrition, etc...I get spinach, pickles, peppers, and cucumbers. Are there enough veggies on a 6" sub to even be able to count it as 1 serving of veggies?? There's no where near a cup of spinach on that sub!! I wanted so badly to count that as a serving of veggies but felt the guilt in my (chubby) gut!!!
I tire of salads quickly and sometimes I must grab something quick on the run for fuel...Subway is a great go-to for me on those days.

Today I was not feeling well and had the "runs" so I did not eat much all day, including veggies. How does that work on the challenge? I am in week 1 and was doing OK until I had this bug today. Can I just skip a day and start counting again tomorrow??? Thanks!

As I mentioned, if you are wondering then click on the Week Link and it'll open up what is supposed to have been sent to you - at least then you are aware of what the week's challenge is about. I think you've given it lots of time, try contacting Coach Nicole as she's the Coach overseeing the group. I hope it works soon for you, that's frustrating.

I never got anything in Spark Mail at all, and that was 5 days ago that I signed up. I'll triple check my settings...... thanks.

It is sent to the SparkMail (and not the email). It takes 24hrs for the sparkmail to arrive from when you first start the challenge. If you click on the link in the open week, it'll open up and describe the challenge. It's the same explanation that you recieve in the SparkMail. If you don't get anything, check that you haven't turned off the sparkmail feature and if you still don't, then send out a help request.

I just have to say that this challenge is a little confusing, because it says I will get each week's challenge in Spark Mail, but that has never ever arrived.

I see where I can find it at the top of the page, but the "how this challenge works" post states that it will arrive in spark mail, and it simply doesn't.

Or maybe it says it will arrive in EMAIL rather than Spark mail, which is a real issue, because I do not allow email from Spark..... my inboxes are all clogged up enough as it is..... could that perhaps be the difference? That is does not get sent to Spark mail but to email?

This is not a journey to weight loss; it is a journey about choosing life one day at a time.

So I guess I was a day early, as the challenge flipped over this morning. The goal for week 2 is eat veggies and learn to love veggies. I have always ate lots of veggies and I have always loved veggies. Is it possible to flip into week 3?

At the top of the group page there is a section where you see the link for Week 1 through to Week 4. If you click on the link you will get the goals for Week One. A sparkmail will also be sent out to you shortly. It is under Challenge Details.

Here is the information:

Week 1 Action Plan

Discover your calorie range. This is the first step to ensure that you are eating the right amount to reach your goals. Your calorie goal for weight loss is a range; you don't have to eat at the very bottom of it, and you definitely should not eat below it. This week, track your food, eat within your calorie range, and find that "sweet spot" in your range that allows you to lose weight while still feeling energized and satisfied.

Consider mini meals. If you're a snacker, or find yourself feeling hungry throughout the day, then eating more frequently may be a diet strategy that works well for you. For many, eating more often is a strategy that leads to better satisfaction, more self-control when temptations come around, and higher energy levels.

Learn how to earn your trophy. By completing this challenge and tracking your goals in the "Eat Better, Feel Fitter" Challenge SparkTeam, you'll be eligible for a special SparkTrophy at the end of the month.

I was wondering, when does it flip over to the next week. I clicked that I completed week one, as today is the day (I am pretty sure, as I think I put it starting at the same day as my doctor diet group) and it hasn't changed. Thanks.

I have noticed a few people on here mention not getting enough calories. I have that problem too because I had nissen fundoplication surgery (for acid reflux) and I can eat very little at this time. That is why eating small meals several times a day is such a great idea. It helps me keep my calories at a somewhat reasonable level. I do run into times when I am just too full and can't eat anymore, but I try not to worry too much about it. I don't want to mess up my metabolism by eating too little but by getting in some exercise most days and eating several times a day, I am happy.

Thank you, Coach Tanya! I really need to work on getting more vegetables into my diet, which is why I am here. I just wondered about the fruit, since I tend to like fruit much more than veggies! emoticon

Our challenge focus is on increasing fiber and fullness by adding more vegetables to meals/snacks. When enjoying fruits, standard servings remain typically at a half cup of an unsweetened applesauce, juice packed canned fruits, fresh berries or frozen fruits. One medium size piece of fresh fruit is considered a serving as well as 12-15 grapes.

Here is a comparison chart you might also find useful. www.sparkpeople.com/resource/food_li

Hope that helps.

The focus of the challenge is to help members develop healthy eating habits that will help you stay full and satisfied on your weight-loss journey. Getting more low calorie (many only 25 calories per half cup serving) but fiber filled vegetables in a day allows you to accomplish this. A couple fruit servings (typically one per meal) are also encouraged but not the focus of this challenge.

Hope that helps.

SLACHETKA,

I've noticed that if you have your nutritional goals set to something other than the default and then change your weight loss goals, the nutrition goals are automatically reset.

I've had to save the calories, fat, carbs and protein numbers so that when I reset my weight loss goal each month, I can also go in and fix the other targets to where I need them to be.

Maybe that is part of why you see your calorie numbers changing.

Hello! I'm brand new to the challenge. I joined because I desperately need to learn how to co-exist with vegetables! Thank you for the info about veggie serving sizes. I wonder, though, what is a serving size of fruit???

It could be caught in a spam filter depending on your service provider. We have linked the weekly e-mail information on the team home page in case that happens. You can click on Week 1 to get started.

It can be tricky when your scale doesn't give you the option of selecting different measures that's for sure. Typically, most vegetables servings are 1/2 cup/4 ounces or 1 cup/8 ounces. Here is a link to an online conversion resource. calculator-converter.com/conv
erter_g_t
o_c_grams_to_cups_calculator.php

Here are the typical amounts needed for handy reference:

.5 cup = 118 grams
1.0 cup = 237 grams
2.0 cups = 473 grams

Hope that helps.

Hi, I measure just about everything on a digital scale in "grams" units. I've have googled this question without a successful answer. My question is: How many grams equals one serving of vegetable?

Beginning to make some substitutions can help such as using a cup of quinoa instead of whole grain rice to double your protein intake in the same volume. Or adding lentils to your soup, stew or chili instead of lower protein bean choices can provide another easy boost. This article might help with additional ideas.

I seem to have a problem getting enough protein - I am within range on my other measurements (calories, carbs, ...) but really have a hard time getting in protein - unless I eat 6 egg whites and eat 2 servings of greek yogurt a day I rarely hit it. What / how do you get your protein into your diet?

The USDA listing will have the information and if you enter the item yourself and include all the data into your listing on SparkPeople and then save it in your favorites, you will be able to calculate the amount. However, if you are just finding a listing in a drop down in the food tracker it may or may not have that added by others.

Here is a listing for apples as an example -- ndb.nal.usda.gov/ndb/foods/show/2142

Focusing on one challenge at a time is a good idea to help you get the most from it. Hopefully once you have mastered the challenge the focus of that challenge can carry more easily with you into the next. I'd suggest picking one to get you started and then save the other challenges to help keep you motivated for a longer period of time.

I fight several of the mineral goals too and potassium is one of them. If you Google potassium foods a long list will come up, There are actually good resources her on SP. What I really like is to pre-plan so I can log into Tracker before I eat. I can't eat all of the calories I am supposed to so I use to set priorities for protein and see if I can do anything? This method will work if you are having a problem maintaining your calorie range in the same manner. Hope this helps!

I have seem to fallen off this one and I am getting back this challenge. I am doing to many challeges and maybe I just need to focus one of them at a time. Question which challenge are we doing and what week are we in?. I do not think that I have been getting emails requarding my challenges, maybe I have and I could have been over looking them. Sorry about that.
I just restarted the challenge since I could not tell where I am on this. its hard to keep track of the challenges that I am doing. There must be a better way to keep track of all this.
I do eat a great deal of veggies, but recently I have been told to cut back on the fruits because of the acid in them is affecting my teeth. So what can I put in place of Fruit?. I am also cutting back on suguar intake. I eat pretty healthy, but my biggest thing is the amount intake.
Suggestions are welcomed. Thank you.

I can do anything with God on my side!

Thanks for the feedback. I am a vegetable lover so getting 5 fruits and veggies a day is not a problem. I often get more. I have always had a problem with leg cramping so I worry about my potassium levels. I do enter a lot of my own foods and even add them to my recipes so I can get a more accurate potassium count. I also work hard at staying hydrated ... sometimes I think my 8 glasses is not enough.

It is good to know that meeting my vegetable goals each day should keep me at the levels I need.

Unless you are adding the potassium amounts of all the foods you are entering, you will likely be low in potassium on the tracker since the Nutrition Facts label only lists the items that are required by law to be listed on food products. Potassium, Ca, Mg and folate etc may be listed as percent daily values, but since they are not required to include exact amounts, they do not include exact amounts so neither does the data base.

If you are getting five servings of fruits and vegetables each day, you are most likely meeting your potassium needs.

If you have problems with consistent low blood pressure be sure to talk with your medical provider. Increasing your sodium intake slightly (500 mg) may help but not always so do a small trial to see if you notice it makes a difference and work with your medical provider to find the best solution.

Hi, when they say a cup of this or that in portion sizes, how big a cup do they mean? Can anyone provide an image reference, please?

Having a problem getting enough potassium every day ... what are the best fruits/vegetables to accomplish this.

The closest I've come to being in range for the day was a week ago when I came within 600 mg to just reach the bottom of the range.

I am prone to low blood pressure; average 90 / 60. I usually feel fine when it is 90 over 60. When it falls below 90, I get migraines. I like eating vegetables. I feel good when I eat them. But if I eat 5 or more for several days in a row, my blood pressure falls below 90. I've tried to increase my salt intake. But I do not want to get used to too much salt. Is there another option other than reducing vegetable consumption? Thanks! Susan

Thanks! I will agree that I gain so much from Spark that I just don't want to give it up. It has really been quite the tool to get information to my oncologist. When I was able to show him him my sodium intake for a month and what I was consuming daily for a month (my husband has to eat as little salt as possible due to blood pressure) he had the info to show me one of the reasons that he couldn't get the level up was how little I was consuming. I made his adjustments and it went up 5 points above normal. W/O Spark I would be on salt pills as sodium is one of the indicators he looks for as an indicator there is a problem!

I don't know how many calories you are consuming, but I don't think the program will let you set it for less than 1200 since that seems to be considered a healthy number of calories per day.
If it will let you change how many pounds you want to lose per week or month (I can't remember which it is) you could try increasing those and that might give you fewer calories per day.
I usually am under on my calorie count also, but I just don't worry about it. If your doctor is okay with your counts, I wouldn't worry about what a program that is trying to help as many people as possible says. I'm not knocking SparkPeople because I think it provides a great site to really help people track, be responsible, and get encouragement, but I think you have to adjust it to fit your needs

I posted this earlier but still need help so am posting here rather than when I posted first time.

I am always under my calories required. But I am so inactive I just don't get that hungry. I run my food reports for my monthly oncologist report and other than sodium which he wanted me to consume more of he has not changed anything. (Sodium is a critical indicator for new cells) He definitely doesn't want me at the 1550 level and is pleased with my weigh ins. I look at my chart daily and weekly and potassium is always low but he doesn't think I have anything to worry about. I do have a problem eating fruit as I just don't like it.

I have brought my calorie count down on my tracker but it always goes back to the standard.

Any suggestions?

Jean

I have a question about the week 1 challenge, eat 5 vegetables daily. I usually eat about 5 servings of FRUITS and vegetables, and am not sure about swapping veggies for fruit or eating 2-3 more servings of veggies on top of that. This is my first day, so please let me know!

If you can forward me your e-mail I can take a look at it (Tanya@sparkpeople.com). What were you disappointed about regarding about the quiz for portion control or am I reading that incorrectly.

As a part of Challenge week 2 I was suppose to take a quiz on portion control, I was very disappointed, but when I click on submit nothing happens. Is there anything else I can do, instead?

Be sure to check your spam folder/filter to see if it got captured there. No worries if it doesn't show up, the information for each week is linked on the challenge home page next to the box you check when you complete the action steps.
