I've just joined the challenge and I'm still learning how it works.

In Spring 2013 I lost 15 pounds not doing anything special, just trying to cut calories. I was too tired and my legs hurt too much to exercise at that time. After the 15 pound weight loss (from 205 to 190), I couldn't lose any more and gained 5 or 6 pounds back.

In summer 2014 I watched Forks Over Knives (highly recommended especially for anyone with heart health concerns). I decided to try the whole foods plant based way of eating for a month - just in time to take advantage of the Farmer's Market! It was such fun to try new vegetables, to go to the Farmer's Market twice a week and meet other local people who were either raising food or wanting to buy fresh and locally. Within 2 weeks I was feeling better than I had in longer than I can remember and my walking pace just automatically increased. I through out my original plan to try it for a month and decided I would try it for 3 months and then have blood work done. I had not gone as long as 3 months without going to the doctor and they always do blood work.

That was sometime in June. It's now almost December - almost 6 months. I have had no need to go to the doctor. I will go for a check up and prescription refills in December. It's the first time in years that I haven't had multiple sinus infections in the fall.

I lost weight very fast, down to 179 over the summer, but then regained up to 186 in the fall when fall semester started back. (I teach college math). I found SP in late October and joined. I also started wearing a FitBit, although I'm taking a break today.

I have passed my previous low weight of 179.0. I'm now at 177.2. I walk almost every day. Sometimes only a little more than 10 minutes and some days I walk really a lot. However, in addition to tracking steps and exercise minutes, I am trying to be very conscious of time spent sitting. I keep reading that sitting for more than 1 hour at a time is terribly unhealthy and that sitting for up to 6 hours undoes the beneficial effects of an hour of exercise! So, I am spending more time standing and moving around, even if the moving is not up to exercise levels. This is much easier on teaching days since that automatically adds 2 hours of standing and light movement time. I stand some at my desk. I can tilt my office computer screen and read standing up, and I can do very light typing standing up if I put the keyboard on a book, but I can't do substantial amounts of typing standing up. At school if I walk from building to building that adds exercise steps and cuts down on sitting. I was an usher at a concert last night - stood at the door before the show and at intermission, cleaned up afterward, alternated sitting and standing during the show. Today I'll be doing laundry so I'll have a time set to go off every 45 minutes or so while typing tests, grading papers and so on.

I have had a hard time eating completely whole foods and completely plant based. I never miss meat and rarely have any. I do miss cheese some and it can be very hard to get whole plant foods with no cheese if I eat out. I can ask for it but don't always remember that I need to do so. If I cook and eat at home, no meat and no dairy is not a problem at all, but not using oil has been a bit of a challenge. Also, avoiding processed food is very difficult. Whole foods taste so much better and they are not more time consuming in general to prepare but they require a lot of planning and doing things ahead of time so that I have something ready to eat or ready for fast food preparation and eating when I need that. So, I slip when I get too busy to really take some time for food preparation. I'm now buying fresh produce from Bountiful Baskets every 2 weeks. That really helps since my house is just full of tons of fresh fruit and vegetables that are very enticing.

My big focus on SP right now is tracking fitness. It is a bit hard to track recipes, even salads, with a long list of fresh vegetables and fruits, and as long as I'm eating fresh fruits and vegetables, with beans and whole grains, I know I'm getting good, healthy nutrition. Exercise is a huge challenge for me, so that's where I feel Spark People tracking can help me the most at present. I will fall away from even 10 minutes a day if I don't have the help of wanting to get the spark points and wanting to see those graphs going in the right direction!

I am a little confused as to how this works. But anyway, my goal is to clean up my diet. Dropping the processed foods especially sugar. Whole food eating is the strategy. Planning/preparring meals the night before will be my tool for success. I will look into some food plans on my lunch break.

Never give up!

Really don't understand week 1. What I thought was a link to determine calories didn't calculate anything. The other two steps are thinking and reading? I never got a welcome email which maybe explained things better?

I walk 2 miles a day, 6 to 7 days a week emoticon and I'm staying within my calorie range.

Since this is the official first day of summer, I have decided to eat lots more raw fruits and veggies emoticon emoticon

It took about 3 weeks for me to notice much of a change. It took a long time to gain the extra weight, makes sense to me it will also take time for my body to adjust to this healthier lifestyle.

I feel much better and stronger. emoticon

So this Monday I just started back exercising again - doing 30 min per day/5 days per week along with a 10 min. dog walk each night. Giving myself every friday off after long week work and then either mon or tues off from exercise. I'm starting to feel a little better after a few days. So this tracker when set up says I'll reach goal in Oct - 4 months - usually with my body takes longer to lose weight but would be great if got done in that time - Need to lose 30 lbs and get that flat tummy again.I'm trying to gradually work my way up to 8 glasses per day, hard when don't drink it too much. Most days this wk only got 4-6 glasses but better than used to. Trying to really cut down on soda so most days per week I'm mostly just drinking water.

yes it is discouraging to not lose but we all know our bodies are changing and healthier things are happening. i have lost 20 pound in 5 months. i already feel lighter, breathing better when i walk or climb a hill. i have actually been able to go outside and play with the grandkids and not have to stop every 5 minutes. just keep at it and we will ream the benefits sooner or later.

2lbs in a month is a great accomplishment! Also, don`t forget that muscle weighs more than fat. You may be losing more than the scale is telling because you`re building muscle.
All the best!
