I finally got out the almond milk 6oz with frozen berries and banana and water to the line
a dash of pumpkin pie spice and so very good!!!! I would rate it a desert!!

Earlier in day tried rough chopped walnuts, almond milk blackberries and apple with apple pie spice and bit of honey fill to line with just a couple ounces water. I'd give it a ten also!

Thank you BRAVELUTE for the links.

My today's smoothie was pretty much like yesterday's. But this time I added peppermint that my sister in law gave to me from her garden. It enhanced the flavor.

Okay, Last Day for May, 2013 challenge, but I'm going change the name to AA Smoothies tonight and we can continue to collect recipes from each other.

Something to think about: I was watching a Fuhrman DVD last night. He mentioned that if we put spinach in a smoothie, that we should also include other greens like romaine, to control the oxalic acid.

I'm going to share some links for smoothies:

Today's smoothie was more like the traditional frozen smoothie I get at Panera:

frozen banana,
frozen berries
frozen mango
almond milk

I had to chop the large frozen fruit pieces smaller so the nutribullet would handle them.
Process with enough almond milk to make a creamy dish like sherbet. Top with chopped walnuts.

Add more milk for a "shake" consistency.

Coconut or hemp milk may also be used.

For more sweetness, add reconstituted raisins or dates.

Yesterday's smoothie was memorable. Memorable so that I never make it again.

I did red cabbage, blueberries, apple, grapes, a bit of lemon, ginger, cinnamon. The flavor was good, but it was chewable. No large pieces, but so much pulp that I couldn't swallow it. And my teeth were purple with purple bits stuck all over. I'm not sure why. Perhaps the nutribullet didn't process this combination properly.

I think the ingredients were healthy, and tasted good together. So I'm thinking if I want to try it again, it's going in the juicer, at least the cabbage and local blueberries to get rid of the pulp, then do the rest with the juice in the nutribullet.

My today's smoothie:
***parsley
***flaxmeal
***ginger
***napa cabbage
chia
avocado
banana
pineapple
cantaloupe melon
cucumber with peel
Taste 7.5/10
While I was writing, I noticed that my smoothies don't have too many AA. I'm thinking that maybe, instead of pure water, I can use tea. Because I'm not a fan of tea this might be a an opportunity to include AA tea in my diet. Also, I need to use at least 2 fruits AA.

Also, if I drink the green smoothie outdoors, under the sunlight, maybe I can add the VITAMIN E. LOL emoticon

My today's smoothie:
**ginger
chia
honeydew melon
banana
avocado pit
**dandelion
Taste: 4/10. I couldn't finish it. I learned something though: to wash the greens just before using them in the smoothie. The dandelion looked pretty in the store, but after I washed it, dried it and put it away, it really started degrading.

BRAVELUT, you have very good ideas for next challenges.

Sounds like your smart doctor might have at least jumped up and down, if not skipped around the office!!

This is off smoothie topic, but have you tried roasted veggies? I LOVE roasted carrots. Roasted tomatoes on pizza is to die for. And I won't eat garlic unless it is roasted.

Green beans steamed are amazing. So is broccoli.

And what about raw asparagus. Wow!! never knew you could do something besides turn it to tasteless mush. Raw is delicious!!

And a combination of veggies in a stir fry with a little miso paste or roasted garlic is pretty good, too.

First day in a month I have not had a smoothie of some kind...
I don't really want food either...a little bug nipping at me I think ...
Just having sips of water tonight and will put lemon water with my night time meds.

I like the idea of keeping this thread going...I learn so much from you girls ...Like using the lemon peal too?!?! My Dr was so encouraging today...I told him again, that I don't like veggies very well and he smiled and said "Keep making smoothies and try to get in 5 veggies a day some way" so I will keep working on it!" He kept telling me he was so please with my progress...So smoothies, Here I come all the harder to learn and eat healthy and "Just do it!"

Great minds thinking!! I was just thinking I could just change the name of the thread to Our favorite AA smoothies, and we can continue to post our smoothies as we create them.

I also like what you do with the asterisks on the AA ingredients. I'm thinking I could put the AA ingredients first.

I have a proposal. Let's keep this thread open, for us to post about the smoothies, besides the month's challenge.
I want to try some of your smoothies. I also want to learn about mistakes that we want to avoid.
What do you think?

Zippy Apple Nutribullet, absolutely delicious!! 5 AA ingredients, 6 if you consider the raisins were grapes.

*apple
*spinach
*1/4 lemon with peel (everything I've been reading lately says put the peel in, so I got brave!!)
*ginger, don't know how to tell you how much, I slice it very thinly, used 2 pieces that were 1/2 inch in diameter (1.5 cm)
*cinnamon
4 chunks of frozen mango
small amount of golden raisins (dried without sugar) about a heaping tablespoon.

Add water to the line, about a cup

Beautiful bright green and a bright wake up flavor!! I probably wouldn't have added the mango if I hadn't mangled the apple in my corer/peeler. The corer part was angled to the side, and I had to put it through a 2nd time and I lost a lot of juice. There shouldn't have been any juice!! ; ) So I think you need to have 2 fruits, either 2 small apples, or apple and something else.

I'll be doing this one again AND I'll probably keep the mango. Could substitute reconstituted dates for the raisins, also.

Note: my friend came over this morning for about 3 hours. She was suffering from either a cold or allergies. I made her this smoothie. She left with no problems, feeling much better. I had to send her the recipe.

Yes, BRAVELUTE, that's the one. My mistake. I don't know how come I didn't read properly. It doesn't contain any oatmeal, but flaxmeal. No wonder that it sounded a very interesting mix the combination of oatmeal and lettuce.

Craftsfan1, re: my smoothie with oatmeal??

I think you are the only one who gave us a smoothie with oatmeal. I don't think I've ever done that. Were you reading the last one I posted on 5/27 with mango, banana, blueberries, and flax?

Thanks, Craftsfan1, prickly pear is what grows wild here in FL. I'm not sure if it's native or not, but it certainly has become naturalized. Though, I'm a native, I have never tried to eat it. I do know from trying to remove it from a spot I wanted to use as a vegetable garden, that the spines can be quite fine and definitely get in your skin.

If you were to tackle this as a food project, I'd keep a pair of gloves to use only with prickly pear, and store them in a ziploc bag.

Hi team, I want to give some information about the cactus. Not all the cactus are edible. The one that I use sometimes for my green smoothie, since it is considered as a leafy green, according to "Green for Life," by Victoria Boutenko, is the Opuntia ficus-indica.
In case that you are interested, you can find some information at http://www.wikihow.com/Eat-Prickly-Pear-Ca
ctus.
The cactus pads need to be handle with care. In case that you get a spine into your skin, as I have a couple of times, you can remove it by coating the area with nail polish, letting it dry, and then peeling it off, or just leaving it there for a while (the nail polish)..
You can find this edible cactus in some chain supermarkets or in Mexican food stores. You can find it also peeled and cut.

Mmmm-BBR Bullet

1 slice dried mango-20 grams
*1cup fresh blueberries
1/2 (50 grams) frozen banana
*cinnamon (1/4 teaspoon)
*1 T flax
1 cup romaine

Fill with water to the line on the large nutribullet container. (I think it held about 1 cup)
This will thicken a little if you process, let sit 1 minute, process again, then serve but it isn't necessary. It will thicken while you drink it.
Very delicious

My Green smoothy today was a failure - I think the spinach was a bit old and the whole thing had a bitter, GREEN taste and I threw out the second serving... Made myself drink the first one for the food content but did NOT enjoy.

On the other hand my apricot/vanilla Gk yogurt and banana fruit one was so delicious!!!

Hi BRAVELUTE, as far as I have read about the apple seeds, there is no problem to eat the apple including the seeds. The amount of cyanide content actually is good for the health. I don't have the book "Green for Life" by Victoria Boutenko, that talks about it, because I returned it to the PL.
The avocado pit, has a lot of soluble fiber in it. But be careful, because not all the blenders are capable of processing the pit and might be damaged.

Someone told me last week that apple seeds were not good for us, but I haven't researched it myself.

I haven't tried to do the avocado pit, but I've read that people do. I'm happy just finding out I actually like avocado!!

Do you leave your apple seed in? I have been debating about it to myself and this article says to leave them in ...even the avocado seed!!! which did not work in mine! left it in fairly large chunks. :(

Hot or cold soup: I seem to like savory soup warm, and fruity soup cold. But that might all change in the winter if I don't warm up soon.

I'd like to make sure I have shared this link about smoothies: nakedfoodmagazine.com/smoothies-sipp
in
g-your-way-back-to-health/

I might have shared it when I started this challenge, but it won't hurt to do it again, an case someone missed it.

I found it while poking around the Naked Food magazine site. An article today said they would donate 4 meals to children for every paid subscription. And I know I paid nothing for mine, so I tried to find out how to have a paid subscription or buy a printed magazine. I didn't find that info, but did stumble upon these smoothies once again.

I was away from home all day ... did make my own orange juice
1 1/2 cup ice and water and 1/2pealed orange whirred in the blender

had my oatmeal then out the door. Home tonight to make DH supper and then early to bed...Fibromyalgia doesn't respond well to this kind of day but tomorrow will have smoothies and rest much of the day.

God bless you each one and talk with you later.

Cruciferous blended salad:
*cabbage
*strawberries
*cinnamon
*almond milk

I read a Fuhrman article about how good cruciferous veggies were, that one important enzyme was locked in the cell walls and needed good chewing or chopping or blending and that cooking destroyed that enzyme, the hotter the more destroyed. He wanted me to eat one CR. veg raw and one cooked daily. So I decided I'd pulverize one each day in a nutribullet drink.

Do you know what the cruciferous veggies are?

arugula
*bok choy
*broccoli
broccoli rabe
brocollina
*brussels sprouts
*cabbage
*cauliflower
*collards
horseradish
*kale
kohlrabi
mâche
*mustard greens
*radish
*red cabbage
rutabaga
*turnips
*turnip greens
*watercress

I think I'm going to use the nutribullet to make a soup broth today out of the more flavorful or bitter greens like watercress and broccoli. Purple cabbage might be good, too. I'll let you know.

*also on the AA list

I had a very good (at least I liked it very much) and weird smoothie that I made with my own frozen fruits and veggies;
- chunks of frozen pineapple
- chunks of oranges
- cactus paddles without thorns
- ginger
- parsley

LindaF49, thanks for the info. Feel free to start a thread about any of those topics as you start to do them. I am particularly interested in dehydrating, and storage procedures. Freezing would also be helpful. I've not been much for canning, however, I do have a cannery available where they let you use their equipment and help you.

Okay. Today's smoothie: 6 AA

Breakfast: almost a repeat of yesterday but no coconut and added 1/2 carrot. I liked this much better:
*1 c cabbage
*1/2 carrot, chopped
*1 orange
*.5 cup unsweetened applesauce (I'm out of apples)
.5 canned, crushed pineapple, in its own juice (we do have fresh pineapple, but they are all green and hard as a rock. They don't even smell like pineapple.)
*.5 teaspoon ginger
*.25 teaspoon cinnamon

Dinner: 4 AA ingredients
handful of shredded romaine,
1/2 frozen banana,
1/2 c. ripe mango,
*1 c. plain almond silk "milk",
stevia,
*cinnamon
*ginger
*flax seed

This was delicious. I'm freezing the rest of the mango for tomorrow. Ripe mangoes are all over right now. I've never seen so many here. Ever!!

The produce stand also has coconuts with coconut water inside, and no coconut meat. Never heard of such a thing.

I don't know how much new info my brain can take!!

Smiling at this lovely discussion and think it would be good to develop a thread for how we preserve, can, dry, freeze, dehydrate our goods as the summer of produce is coming.

For quick answers, these were home dehydrated two summers ago I peal the pear, cut it into 10th with an apple cutter that you press down over the fruit and it cores it and cuts it into 10 equal parts then I dry them fairly crisp to shrink them down as much as possible for storage. They are dipped in apple/pear juice with extra Vit. C or "fresh fruit" to keep them lighter colored and "pretty" I did not have access to drier last year so DD and I canned a lot of sauce that I have enjoyed but found one last jar of the dried ones in the store room.

Today's smoothie:
**10 almonds coarsely chopped then into the blender with other
**2 oz greek yogurt plain
**4oz strawberries home frozen
65 gm banana (1/2 of banana pealed)
Ice water to the mark
**1 tsp honey because I was wanting a sweet treat even with the banana
**Dash of pumpkin pie spice (**Cinnamon, **nutmeg, **ginger and allspice)

I give this a 10++ will use as a replacement for ice cream which I crave from time to time and will not let come in the house as I loose portion control with it easily and too many un-needed ingredients in the financially available brands.

I had no idea. I've dehydrated, but that was it. No juice.

That sounds absolutely delicious to have pear juice later on.

Yes you can.....my youngest before she dehydrates her pears for the Winter gets plenty of juice and packs the juice for through the Winter as well as will use that juice in baking as a substitute liquid. How she does that, I have never been around at that time.

I was just asking because I've never seen pear juice and she was working with dehydrated pears, had reconstituted them in apple juice.

You were asking if the pear flavor would come through the yogurt or water. Suggested pear juice for the vitamins/minerals whether the whole amount of juice or partial with the yogurt. I'll use juice similiar to the fruit to help flavor the yogurt. But then again that's me1

I'm wondering if it was the yogurt? Would the pear flavor come through better with water? or almond silk?

Do you dry your pears in slices? And do they dry leathery or crispy?

Mmmmm sounds good

I guess I will share my disappointment
Tried some home dried pears in my fruit smoothie this morning and did NOT like the outcome.
Reconstituted them overnight with apple juice
Then added frozen black berries, greek yogurt, nutmeg and honey per my usual routine and it was poor flavor...I'm thinking the pears were just not good quality as I have tried this combination with fresh pear before and like it...I do like raspberries better with pear too...but it was a disappointment . Better luck next time.

Today's smoothie: Tropical Blend 5 AA ingredients

*1 c. shredded cabbage
1/2 c. canned pineapple (fresh would have had more flavor)
small banana (80 g.)
*small navel orange 90g.
*5 g crystallized ginger
*1/4 t. cinnamon
1 c. Trader Joes Coconut Milk Beverage (60 calories per cup)
*15 g. almonds
15 g. coconut, unsweetened

Note: This coconut milk is not sweetened, very much like plain almond milk but has a definite coconut aroma and flavor to it. It is different from the canned coconut milk. Not sure why. They probably have more water in it.

This morning I only had 1/4 c. of the milk left so finished the cup off with water.
Wish I had done it with something frozen. Even so, it was pretty good!! I guess I was expecting it to be sweeter. So next time I will add a date and see if that is closer to what I want from this.

*1 T TJ roasted flaxseed with blueberries
*1 handful shredded cabbage
*1 small apple
*.5 c. strawberries
*.5 c.raspberries
*5 g. crystalized ginger
*.25 t. cinnamon
*1 c. almond silk original

Next time, I want to add a SMALL amount of celery, since I enjoy celery in my waldorf salad. And I think I'll switch out grapes for the raspberries.

May Challenge of at least 3 AA foods in new smoothie
***Dark cherries
Banana [ran out of storage and frozen apples so will be buying them next trip]
***Quinoa [just 2 tsp for first try will up that to 1 Tbsp next try]
***Nutmeg
***Gk Yogurt
Ice water

Thanks for sharing that you add cinnamon with Kale, I'm still trying to like the green things.
When adding the cocoa powder, I have done some honey and some without esp if banana in the smoothie but I do like just a pinch of salt to bring out the flavor.

For those of you that may want to cut the time when preparing smoothies.
I freeze all my fruits like melons, watermelons, apples, pineapples, mangoes, bananas, papaya, avocados, ginger, etc. I wash them and cut in bite size pieces. I also freeze avocados, celery, and cucumbers.
When they are frozen, I just put them in plastic sandwich bags, and then in big freezing bags.
With this method, I don't have spoiled leftovers.

Of course I peel the items that need that like watermelons, avocados, etc.

May Challenge of at least 3 AA foods in new smoothie:

Actually this is a "left over" smoothie idea...I notice that most of my fruit smoothies are a little more than I really want in one sitting and the empty 6oz yogurt container was sitting there so I thought ...hmmm what if I made a sherbert/sorbet kind of dish by just pouring some of my smoothie into that cup and sticking it in the freezer of the fridg?

Well tonight I came home from physical therapy, tired, stressed, hungry...fixed my good supper but "wanted icream", my go-to comfort food that I don't keep in the house anymore!!! So I pulled out that cup and let it set about 10 minutes on the counter and then enjoyed!!!! I am one happy girl!!!
This one was strawberries, greek yogurt, apple, honey and splash of vanilla plus ice/water in the original smoothie and this was about 5 oz because I allowed a bit of space in the container for expansion when it froze. Nummy!!! WiIll do this again!!!

And I did just that -- forget to post them

This what I call my Clean Out The Fridge Bed-time Smoothie" I'm not hungry after it at all, its also great for Breakfast on the go!

Used:

10 oz. of crushed ice
8 oz. of water
1 Tbs. of Hazelnut paste
1 Tbs. of peanut paste
8 oz. of Crane-grape drink mix
1 tsp. honey
2 mint leaves

Right now its cold and delicious, lucky I made enough for breakfast tomorrow. Found a recipe for mock V8, think I may give that a try I made in the Ninja Blender part.

Breezy Blueberry Banana nutribullet:
Frozen banana,
*1 c. frozen blueberries,
*1 c. spinach,
celery,
*ginger,
*cinnamon,
stevia

I will do this again with half the celery. I had made a very thin slice across the whole celery bunch and put all those little pieces of stem and leaves in the nutribullet. It was very strong. Perhaps if I hadn't used the leaves it wouldn't have been as strong. It was overpowering, where I could taste all the flavors in yesterdays smoothie.

For some reason, I wanted the celery. And I feel better today after having this smoothie. So lesson learned. When adding a new ingredient, I'll start out with a very small amount.

I'm wondering if cucumber would complement the blueberries better.

Morning nutriblast:

*frozen strawberries,
* blueberries,
frozen banana with
*spinach,
*ginger,
*cinnamon,
stevia and water added to the line--about a cup.

My teeth are still frozen.

I'd rate this a 10. I also like to add almonds, but I'm saving those calories for pizza later today.

Lunch smoothie: Green Tea, Mango, Flax Seed, honey, strawberries. Not bad with the green tea and mango. That deserves another try!

Morning smoothie: Soy milk, cherries, apple, honey, dash of nutmeg ice

Yeah, I am learning and loving it!!! This got an 8 from me...I like greek yogurt and a touch of vanilla better!

I bought my first genuine maple syrup today so looking forward to a little bit of "legal sweetness"

In honor of the thread for Green Smoothies, the challenge for May is to create a smoothie, any color, with at least 3 AA ingredients, share here in this thread, and rate on a scale of 1 - 10. You might share how others who tried it liked it.
