OK. Happy Thanksgiving. Merry Christmas and all the other holidays that congregate around this time of year. I'm sorry if it feels like I've forgotten about all of you. I haven't!! But I seem to be involved in things outside of the computer a LOT more now since I bought the SP Tracker.

I ordered one for my sister, also. We both think the tracker is addictive. I guess that's a better addiction than Christmas cookies, cupcakes, or egg nog. Anyway, I'm out getting my steps, miles, etc. and generally much more active than ever.

In fact, I don't seem to enjoy sitting in front of the computer screen any more. It's as if someone gave me a post hypnotic suggestion to stay out of the recliner, and OFF the laptop.

I hope you are all doing well. I still receive notifications when you post and come around periodically to keep up with you.

If you have a specific question of concern to ask of me, feel free to send me a spark mail.

I know that is late, but still, I wish you all of you, my emoticon a wonderful Thanksgiving day.
I ended up helping with the Thanksgiving dinner. I made a flan in the pressure cooker and macaroni and cheese in the rice cooker. The flan was fantastic and I had a very small piece. The macaroni and cheese was not good. I followed the instructions that I found in Youtube. It was dried.
After dinner, my kids invited me to the theater. We watched "Ender's Game." Although is not my line of movies, I enjoyed spending time with them. And of course, I didn't avoid the popcorn and soda. Sorry, but I decided to enjoy the food today.

I went and got more blood work done today, then went to the dermatologist, followed by a flying trip to the pharmacy.

For fun I walked/ran the dog this morning. It was still Very Windy, so it was a real challenge. Now I am cooking a yummy dinner with plenty of AA ingredients.

That is what I am doing for my health today.

My blood pressure had crept up to 165/95 at one point. Doctors never prescribed meds for it, but I prescribed getting healthy for myself instead.

Just like I had a colonoscopy today in the interest of keeping up to date with my screenings to catch any cancer recurrence early.

Funny thing. After my PET scan on Friday, I woke up from a dream where the report said I had 165 cancer spots show up. I guess that was more like a nightmare. Don't know where that dream came from, after all I've done for my health.

I'm chalking that nightmare up to subconscious worry.

What did you do for your health today?

I had my monthly visit with my oncologist--bloodwork, flush the port, B12 shot, and hear how well I'm doing. And I AM doing well. Blood pressure today was 90 /63.

But they are always surprised that I have lost more weight and always make sure it is a planned weight loss. I assure them I'm healthy, and working out by walking and swimming, and eating a very healthy diet. I don't think they are used to seeing people who continually, gradually lose weight.

I'm not either, for that matter. And I attribute this to the AA foods. I know others have had my success and more with no knowledge of the benefits of these foods. But It has been an easy journey to include these foods and feel so great!!

LESLIELENORE, I'm sure that you will get there. In your first blogs you talked about your dream of being able to kayak, and you got it. Now your project is to find the balance, and you will get it too. emoticon

I am having trouble finding the balance of calories in vs calories out. I have kept losing weight for the most part, which has actually put me a little underweight from where the nurse thinks I should be. I don't want to start gaining back a lot of weight though, so I am being cautious about adding calories.

LESLIELENORE, I know that you are on maintenance. For what I have read, it is not that easy to be in that stage. I wonder if there is a similitude to when we started the change from eating whatever to start the diet to loose weight.

Good for you!! Wish I could say the same. I was anxious to get back home to my cooking, my ingredients. Fruits and vegetables. I think things will work out, but the worst was lack of natural fiber. So once I get that straightened out, I should be back to normal. Whatever that is.

I just got back from vacation yesterday and weighed in, and I have lost a few pounds. I shouldn't be too surprised since I exercised a lot, but I also ate out a lot, so weight gain was a concern. Glad to know a vacation doesn't have to derail me!

Hi team members. Yesterday I cooked quinoa for the first time in the rice cooker. I watched a video about how to do it. The quinoa turned out great! Next time I'm going to try the lentils.

'pears they're right where I put them. But that is very cool how "keys" shows up like buttons. Now I have to go try that on other web sites. I've always known control F would bring up a search box, but I've never seen the words shown like they are here.

Thanks for sharing the tip!!

I think I need less virtual help in finding my real world keys!!

Gentle hugs for you Chandra as you move and are caregiver for your mom ... I have been there though continued to live at home, spent many nights with her and planned her care and other caregivers for 5 years ---NO regrets!!! I am blessed! My dear youngest brother has the homestead and he and his wife have remodeled it and it is lovely retreat for all five siblings now whenever we wish to visit.

Please continue to share your heart and burdens with us ... and maintain your good health through it all!!! More hugs and wiping tears of thanksgiving for the memories

I would like to keep my apartment, but I don't think I can afford to keep paying rent and chip in for expenses with my parents.

BTW... mom is home from the hospital this evening. She has a walker and is complaining about the heat.

There was a time when My parents moved temporarily to my grandfather's house to care for him when he got cancer. He died 6 months later and they eventually made the move permanent.

They could have stayed in their home, with Mom driving across town daily, or just staying there herself. There really wasn't money for nursing home care. They were happy to have gone through that major upheaval. At the time, my sister was in high school and had to change schools.

When I was so sick, I was grateful Mom lived around the corner, and she had to stay at my house a few nights after I came home from surgeries.

So what's the point? I guess I'm saying, it's what family is for.

But I'm wondering if it would be possible to keep your apartment a couple of months until you decide if it's going to work out in the long run as a permanent move?

I'm glad that your mother will come back soon from the hospital. I know that the worst part of the cleaning is to sort, sort, sort, specially small items.

I have spent two mornings so far working on cleaning at my parents' house. I have been making some progress but it is slow going as I have to sort through everything, because my mom has antiques and family photos stuck in stacks of junk. Today I found my parents' marriage certificate and wedding pictures. My dad was glad to see them. Back then he was skinny and had hair! I probably have another week's worth of cleaning to do, but my mom will only be in the hospital a few more days, and since she forbade me to touch her stuff
i can't do the cleaning while she is home.

NC is lovely, not as warm as I remember past summers. It has rained for a short while every day, sometimes during the night. I didn't bring my scale so I think I'm suffering withdrawal.

But I did bring my resolve to continue to eat healthy food. I'm so glad I have a house here so I can cook, because there are only 2 restaurants which have a clue about how to prepare vegetables. And I can't afford to eat there on a steady basis.

Ingles (grocery store) does have a great salad bar and the park in town by the river is a very nice place to go eat then walk.

My heat pump had nothing wrong with it. WooHOO!! I thought I'd have to spend thousands replacing it. Now I wish I had signed up for a class at the folk school. I'll come back when something is offered in the fall : D That's my favorite time, cool and colorful.

I'm just back from the oncologist. Everything is great. I put stats into the progress forum.

Pretty good morning. I walked 1.2 miles. I'm hoping to get to the pool but it appears that will have to be worked in around the storms.

I'm heading to NC Maybe Wednesday or Thursday to hopefully get my heat pump repaired or replaced. I'm probably goofy for trying to get it fixed now since I'll have no airconditioning until they do. Probably should wait until October.

Not as much as I am! This adds extra fuel for his meals at home to continue that perkiness when he comes home.

Have been ordering DH's meals since admission, went back through his meals since Friday an noticed that I have ordered more fish an poultry than red meat and he has not complained. So along with the AA veggies, fruits that are AA he has not complained either. Also he has been more active and much more perky.

Good for you. I find sweeteners very difficult to control or eliminate. I know it's not a requirement here with AA, but I'm on Food exercise 6 for Fuhrman that wants me to eliminate all sweeteners for 2 weeks. Day 3. I don't think I'm a bear, but, hey, I live along. The only one who would know is my dog, and Jewels Isn't talking!!

Hi MICHELLE142. I hope all gets better and better with your DH.
IM_HIS, your healthy improvement is amazing. Thank you for sharing because it is very encouraging to know about how the AA is helping our health.
I'm still learning more in deep about the AA. Now that I'm aware of that, I pick more AA items in my diet and recipes.

Good action gong on, sounds great!

Been MIA from here an other teams as hubby has been having a small problem with dementia. However, this past Monday he put himself into a Big problem. He fell early Monday morning and twisted his Right Femur. When the doc. opened that leg to put a rod down the bone marrow, he found a bunch of bone dust. When he twisted the bone and it snapped it also exploded the bone surrounding the break. Now he is doing better and rehabing to learn to walk once again. ..............So I have been ordering his meals from the hospital menu and have noticed that there are no AA foods on that list for Calcium, protein, or those foods that will help his pain. Spoke with the Nutritionist and she just gave me the look as to say. " What are you talking about?" I did some explaining, an we are to get together next week before DH is discharged.

Keep up the good work!

Since my program now is almost strictly vegan, with a very small amount of animal product during the week, my protein levels in the tracker are always low. And on days when I really push my workout, I worry about that.

So I found an article that even I think I can trust the info, and possibly implement some of it when I feel like I need to "fuel the vegan athlete" in me.

If you you have concerns about getting enough protein or other nutrients because of the level of your workouts, then here's the link:

https://www.drfuhrman.com/members/Newslett
erDownload.aspx?issue=42

Edit note: I've heard from others the link doesn't work. I might have been in a members only part of the site. If you are taken to a list of possible pages, you are looking for Issue 42, 2010, Fueling the Vegan Athlete.

Sorry if you can't see the article. If you are interested or have a specific question, let me know and I'll try to summarize major points or pull the answer out of the article.

Yes. I have not been eating pasta, cookies or drinking any diet drinks. Instead, I have been eating oatmeal, flaxseed, quinoa, sweet potatoes to satisfy my hunger for starches.

My veggies have been kale, spinach, collard green, purple cabbage, beets and carrots

I have been drinking green tea instead of diet drinks

To satisfy my sweet tooth, oranges, strawberries, apples, and blueberries

Turmeric, garlic, onions and ginger are big spices for me.

I have not had any sugar, have been using stevia instead.

The results: My left land had a large lump near the wrist, the size of a hard ball. It was so painful that it kept me up nights--it is now the size of a quarter. My left hand was so swollen in could not close it. Now just the left pinky finger is swollen. My ankles and calves were swollen plus continuous charley horses when I got up in the morning for the first 2 hours...now have not had any. Also, I have taken off 2.5 pounds. And I am sleeping through the night!!

I'm glad. Do you notice a lot of AA foods being added in to the wheels to add fiber?

I think a lot of them are on both lists--fiber and AA

I'm taking a beautiful fresh fruit salad with cinnamon yogurt on the side to a luncheon in a few minutes, but wanted to check in. It's nice to be able to take something which I consider to be healthy. Besides watermelon, cantaloupe, and pineapple, the salad also has strawberries and blueberries, and of course the Greek yogurt with cinnamon for those who add that.

Do yourself a favor and eat AA fruits and veggies this weekend. Herbs and Spices wouldn't hurt, either. So many health issues will clear up!!

Hi LESLIELENORE,
I read this week a blog about exertion headache at
http://www.sparkpeople.com/blog/blog.asp?post=is_your_exercise_routine_turning_into_a_headache

The blogger recommends drinking coffee and then plenty of water.
I hope that your headache passes soon. Get well.

I have been busy trying to survive 10 months of an ungrateful, spoiled exchange student. Now that she is gone, perhaps things will level out. She left her room in a mess, plus put things that were of value to us to be thrown out with her dead fish. I am so happy that I listened to that inner voice say, "Check out what she tossed out." Now I know where all my silverware went--in her garbage.

I am getting back on track since I gained weight. Thank you for the Full Plate website. I am making a commitment to the diet. I know I need to be here.

Chandra, I hope you're back to normal by tomorrow!!

Craftsfan1, He told me before normal range was 1-4. It was over 4 today and he said he'd like it to be around 2 at least, if not 1.

He said there was nothing else for me to do. I'm still looking though for a natural answer for this problem. So if you hear of anything, point me to it!!

I'm glad that everything else is OK. What kind of food is helpful for the thyroid? emoticon
I thought that your doctor wanted a range of .4 to 4.5.

The thyroid test was down from 9.6 to 4.2. He was pleased with the 10 pound weight loss since March 26 despite that. And I'm upping the dosage to 75 from 50. Don't need to go back for 3 months. WooHoo!! Everything else seems great!!

How are all of you doing?

Okay, I said I'd change the May 2013 Challange name to Smoothies. And I don't seem to be able to do that. I thought I was able to modify titles before. So don't know if it's a temporary problem or what.

So I think I'll just start a new thread in the recipes section and we can continue to put smoothies there.

And since this appears to be a problem, I'm going to ask you to record your June Challenge salads in a Salad thread under recipes also. If that challenge takes off like the Smoothies, we'll definitely want to find all those ideas later!!

My head says most people braise collards, turnips, and mustard greens.
I also chop them and cook in my pressure cooker. Check recipes in SP recipes for all of them.

Think cabbage when you think of cooking collards or mustard greens. Think spinach when cooking turnip greens, onlh a little tougher.

Dr. Fuhrman's recipe has you steam these greens.

Sea vegetables are any edible plant growing in the sea. You know sushi? it is wrapped in nori, which is a seaweed.

I bought some and was just reading aout them : Crimini mushrooms are also known as white button mushrooms, brown mushrooms, brown cremini mushrooms, baby or mini bella mushrooms and portobella or portobellini mushrooms. Most commonly, crimini mushrooms are around 2 inches in diameter, while portobello mushrooms are more fully grown examples of the same species around 4 to 6 inches in diameter.
Selection The best crimini mushrooms are firm, fat and brown. Avoid wrinkly or slimy mushrooms. Crimini mushrooms are usually available in either fresh or dried form, and certified organic mushrooms are the healthiest. Before eating them, clean them with a damp towel or cloth or a mushroom brush, as too much water makes them soggy.
Cooking : Small fresh shiitake mushrooms are an acceptable substitute for crimini mushrooms in recipes, if necessary. Cooking crimini mushrooms, especially via sauteing, is the healthiest and tastiest way to enjoy them. These mushrooms are often enjoyed with onions, tomato or other vegetables, and sometimes stuffed with cheese or inside an omelete
Health Benefits : Crimini mushrooms are good for you. They contain immune system supporting phytonutrients, vitamin D, anti-inflammatory compounds, antioxidants, protein, dietary fiber, healthy conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), zinc, selenium, copper, potassium, phosphorus, manganese, magnesium, iron, calcium, folate, choline and the B vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 and B12. Crimini mushrooms are especially notable among mushrooms for their strong immune system supporting qualities.

Also went to the site and took the questionair ..such fun and interest... will be interesting what my blood tests show about the D after taking Rx for a couple of months!

Got the analysis report back on that questionnaire, so have a question. On the food list in one area suggested are: Sea Vegetables,Mustard Greens, Swiss Chard, and Collard Greens. Also mentioned was Crimini Mushrooms which I have never heard of. Is there a special way these greens need to be cooked? (Have never fixed them before) and what are Sea Vegetables?

Bravelut, this cocktail is just a mixed of cubed fruits and roots. I called it cocktail after "Del Monte Fruit Cocktail." It is not a liquid cocktail. It's more a mix of cubes of fruits and roots.

Hi BRAVELUTE, regarding the fruits and roots cocktail, I make a mix with fruits like apples, oranges, peaches, pomegranates, grapes, papaya, pineapple, kiwis, watermelon, dragon fruit, cactus fruit, mangoes, and cucumber (bananas, berries and melons don't fit well in the cocktail). I don't use grapefruit, because I don't like the taste, but you can add it. The roots that I add raw are like carrots, beets (cut in little cubes), radish, and jícama Last time I tried the Daikon radish and it mixed very well. I think that next I will try the turnip.
I usually like to make them with a ratio of 1:1 with whatever combination of fruits and roots that I have available.
Once the mix of fruits and roots is ready, you can eat it plain or sprinkle lemon juice, bottled chili sauce like Tapatio, paprika, etc.
After joining this team, I'm trying to eat this cocktail more often and now I can name it my AA cocktail.

I did the questions and analysis, and it said I needed more D, B12, E and Zinc. I take a Vitamin D supplement, especially during the cold, dark winter. The others? Well, I have to think about those.

Sorry to change the subject, but you can carry on with the lima bean discussion right around me. I found this site this morning:

www.whfoods.com/foodadvisor.php

I completed their questionnaire which basically asked where I lived in general, my age, health issues, and how much I ate of different foods each day or each week.

It then generated an interactive report that showed what nutrients I showed I was probably deficient in with percentages. B12, D, and zinc were critical. E, B3, and B5 were critical. Everything else was pretty much perfect. Well, I already knew the B12 and D were problematic and the doctor prescribed supplements are taking care of that. So, I'm checking my multivitamin to about the E. I know the Bs are in my B Complex I take.

I'd like to enter the way I was eating a year ago. I'm sure the deficiencies have changes!!

The site appears to have a wealth of info on foods which they consider to be healthy. I don't agree with their healthy list, but that's okay. You probably won't agree with it either.

emoticon Last Fall there was a Food Network show on canning and freezing. According to that program the pods are not used in either canning or freezing. I looked yesterday at the store for the frozen, no Lima pods were found. Called the local Extension and they said that usually only the bean was canned or frozen as the texture of the pod changes over time and is not very eatable when prepared once canned or frozen. Checked with some of the ladies around here that put their produce up in the fall, they leave the pod alone around here.

Linda, about the limas.

Here is a resource, but I couldn't find the answer to your specific question.

www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspic
e&dbid=59#purchasequalities

I've never eaten limas in the pod, but when I read the article, they said you could cook young limas in the pod and serve them as an appetizer like edamame.

So have you ever eaten the lima pods? I think that would be the thing to figure out--are the pods edible like sugar snap peas or green beans (after cooking) or are they pretty much a lost cause like edamame?

Interesting question.
I know I prefer frozen baby limas as opposed to the mature.
I know I can buy dried lima beans without the pods. So that is an option for you.
But I've never even seen lima pods to try them.
