Cheriah, I'm not a psychic but I see some pain and suffering in your future if your daughter's boyfriend accepts the offer. Good luck!

Those other people are pretending you're not there, so that they don't feel self conscious, so just ignore them.

Ummmmmm...........I am still fresh starting. LOL Starting NOW! I was going to do a mile run yesterday so that I would have a benchmark for a time to beat and discovered my fitness has drastically decreased. I couldn't even jog one lap without walking, sooooo I am readjusting my goal for the one miler. My current goal will be to jog one lap without walking. I will try again today. I think I could've done a little better, but I was feeling self conscious that other people were around and felt like they were "watching" me. Of course, they probably hardly noticed me or cared but confidence is something I definitely have to work on.
Thanks for asking about me though. It really helps to reaffirm my goals.
You guys are GREAT!

Hey guys! I really need to get back on track. Tomorrow is Monday ----the perfect day to "begin again". My husband has been on vacation this week and I haven't really been checking my emails or been eating well or tracking anything, but just reading your posts here in inspires me that I CAN get back on track again and that it is never too late to start!

Hi Beebarb, I do low carb and it really works for me...but yes, you gotta watch what you eat...I replace my grains with fruits and veggies, but do have some granola occasionally with my yogurt and do have small treats at times...I don't look at it as a "diet", but as a way of life....it will be challenging over the holidays, but I've got some alternatives I'll be making with less sugar, lower carbs, etc, and if I do indulge, small portions...LOL...when I started low carb I did gain a few pounds, but stick with it and the pounds began melting off, and I felt a whole lot better when I didn't eat the breads, pastas, grains, etc...had a lot more energy, less "brain fog" and no "crash" at 3 pm....hope if you stick with low carb, it works for you,,,at least you are trying!!! I'm glad this is a sticky too, yes, interested in seeing who replies!!! Take care, Cheri

Welcome back Lissy. Cheri, congratuations on your loss. Way to go! I'm glad you decided to make this thread a sticky one. It will be interesting to see who responds and what progress we've made. Me - I haven't lost a thing but, until this week, I hadn't gained either which is a good thing. Gaining weight by leaps and bounds is what brought me to SparkPeople. I gained this week because I was trying to go low carb and acted as though giving up potatoes and bread gave me carte blanche to eat anything else I wanted. Hopefully I'll have those pounds off by Sunday.

Hi Lissy!!! My motivator was my health in general, and being an almost 50 year old woman with "changing issues", I keep myself busy and break the stress built up in me through my workouts....I track everything I eat and workout every day.....It has really helped in every way, not to mention being able to buy and wear clothes which fit nicely and looking good in them again. I have learned to say "no" when I have to to things I just shouldn't be involved in, and I realize others can function without my help. It was just time to get my life back, and I'm glad I did. I bought a Bodymedia link and I love it, but I got it wet and it does not track everything as it should, so I'm holding out for the water resistant one which should be coming out soon. I did buy the SP activity tracker and it does work good, but I'm spoiled on the Bodymedia which tracks EVERYTHING! I'm thinking of giving my SPAT away to someone in this group, but have not figured out how I would pick them....would be right in time for the holidays too....got any ideas? Glad you are back, and take every day one day at a time!!! Cheri***

Hi Cheriah1993! Good job on your weight loss. You are the only one that has replied so far...... I was very motivated when I joined SparkPeople but unfortunately I got overwhelmed with the site and all the emails and quickly stopped altogether. Then of course I gained everything back plus more. I am back on SparkPeople again to try and find the motivation that got me started up last time. I will NOT make the same mistakes this time and I am more efficient with my time on the site so that I accomplish what I log in for. Thanks for replying! People replying back to me seems to be one of the best motivators of all regardless of what the post is about. I guess it's just nice to know that someone is listening. How about you? What has worked for you?

Lissy

Hi Weightliss!!! I'm still here and I am glad you are too...had a lot of changes since starting SP....today is the anniversary of when I thought I was going to die last year (ended up in the ER) and decided to finally take hold and be responsible for myself,,,since I have always done for others and put myself last.....I am down 50 pounds since 1 year ago today, and still have some to go, but not much. I have much more appreciation for life that I did not have a year ago, and my life couldn't be happier as of now. I'd love to hear from more of the group also....many wanted a challenge to be posted for our group, but honestly, I'm not sure which one to do as there are so many that repeat from group to group. I think I'll make this a sticky..... emoticon

We all started this journey together the same week! Just wondering how many of us are still floating around out there in SparkPeople. I quit for awhile, but I am trying to get back in the swing of things again.
High fives to all of my peeps from the SP Class of March 17-23, 2013 that are still out there trying. We can do it!

Hey Jenn - Definitely don't let the scale judge how well you are doing. I have only lost 3 lbs in that last 2-3 weeks, but my body is still changing, even if I can see it immediately. Others see it. Keep up the good work and never STOP!

Hey Jenn - don't worry about the emoticon numbers - they will fluctuate. Consentrate on the little things that you notice changing. Today I put on a pair of jeans that have been very tight on me they were uncomfortable, but when I slipped them on this morning, they felt good, So I know something is happening, even if the scales don't show it.

Stick with it, we are all in this together.

My weight goes down then up.

I have started exercising, but it's just walking. I suppose it could be water retention in my muscles.

I am tracking all calories and I just feel a little frustrated with the scale. I weighed in the other day and I was 151 pounds. Next time I weighted in (same time of day) I was up to 153.

Shucks! Anyone else having this problem? I always think it's because I'm old. 56 yrs. My husband can lose 10 pounds in 2 or 3 weeks. Not me.

I think life is not so much about waiting for the storms to be over, as much as it is, learning how to dance in the rain.

celebrate small successes and take it one step at a time. so many times people focus on a large goal of lots of lbs or inches and i know for me i have to take it in small chunks to be successful otherwise the disappointments become overwhelming. you cant change all at once so find one thing a week to change and go from there. you will be successful!

total to date since Jan 10 I am down ten lbs and 23 inches. I am trying to get to 200 by june 1 and continue to work towards my goal. I am struggling with sweet cravings during the day and at night at times but know it is out of boredom. I am ready for iowa spring to finally get here instead of our 2nd winter so that I can get outside and do more. I also need to ramp up my cardio when I go to the gym but have noticed that the treadmill hurts my shins but that the elliptical machines are all full when I go to the gym. I have also increased my weights an also ramping up my weights as I love lifting weights. any suggestions for sweet cravings that are easy on the go and not crunchy?

JavaJenn, I'll have to look into the Spark recipes. Those sound good.

I started Insanity yesterday! It was on my porch when I got home from work, so I popped it in and just did it right away. (I figured might as well not waste that expedited shipping money). So the program comes with a calendar to stick to and it starts on a Monday, so I did the supplemental abs DVD instead of the designated first disc. Ohhhh man. These moves are H-A-R-D hard. I think the disc is meant to do after you finish the program, so i just modified the moves to fit me and just kept moving. The video is really great- the trainer is motivating, thee are lots of his trainees to watch, and some of them get tired and have to take rests which is nice to see!, and there is a timer at the bottom of the screen showing your progress within the 30 minutes and also during each set of moves. So it will have a 15, 30, or 60-second countdown so you can see how much time you have left during the move! I am going to do that video again today because I see the difference already in my legs and waist (I admittedly gain muscle quickly- but not lose fat, mind you) I am slightly sore but not too.

I might try another supplement video if I'm up for it later in the day. I have a wedding to go to tomorrow so....dress on, legs out!

Stay strong over the weekend, Sparkers!

In 4 weeks I have lost 5 pounds. I track all of my calories. I have been trying to stay within my suggested calorie range which is 1200 to 1500 a day.

I track all of my exercise. I have recently added walking as an exercise because I enjoy it more than any other exercise. I couldn't walk far in the beginning, but now I walk 2 miles. I am taking osteo bi-flex and my arthritis pain is getting better. I think the exercise is helping with that too.

I have found that drinking water before I eat helps me eat less. I don't wait until I'm hungry to eat because if I do I tend to overeat.

I also am eating more slowly and trying to leave something on my plate.

I have found Spark recipes very helpful. I made cabbage soup and the second day I used a slotted spoon to let the excess broth drain away then added the veggies to some pasta. It was very good.

Spark is working for me. And this is my first time using SparkPeople emoticon

It has been a few wks since I last posted - things are going ok - need to adjust my calorie count I think - the emoticon numbers are slowly going back up.

Some days are better than others when it comes to eating - but am going to be more dilegent in paying attention to what enters my mouth.

Water is no problem - always have a water bottle on the go, and refill it often, and at the end of the day I am drinking @ 90 oz +

So emoticon to you all emoticon

Just checking in- Hi everyone! This is my first time writing on SparkPeople. There are so many avenues to use I am overwhelmed, but I figured I might as well start with the group of people who signed up and started the same week as I did! Hi!

I signed up for SparkPeople because of an occasion I have at the end of April that calls for me to dress for warm weather and DUN DUN DUN...a pool. Let's call it the Short Shorts Convention. So for this SSC, I want(ed) to lose 20 pounds (about 3 down so far eek) and get my thighs, butt, and stomach toned enough to feel ya know, comfortable and happy and relaxed enough to have a good time and soak all the good times in instead of constantly thinking about my outfit and what angle I'm standing at and is my under-chin sticking out and are my arms squished against my side and is my stomach fatter than hers. Well I hope it turns out that way, but I'm not at my goal currently and I have less than 20 days left. But since starting to do some more and different exercising (workout videos on youtube), I might be okay with it because I already feel stronger and more confident and that might be enough to make me feel content during the Short Shorts Convention. And I know that by sticking with the small changes I've already made I can get to my ultimate goal EVENTUALLY.

So anyway I started strong, as I'm sure a lot of us do, and then the weekend hit and I had a special occasion to ahem, drink for. Which meant the day after and two days after that I craved lots of salty, crunchy, and cheesy (read: unhealthy, calorie-loaded) food. Gah! I can really see that alcohol is something I need to reconsider if I am going to get serious about losing the weight. I'll think more about this.

After my regrettable binge, I have been casually more conscious of what I eat. I printed out a template for a food journal that keeps track of what time you eat your food. I am not disciplined at having meals at the same time every day (My job location and time varies every day) and I know our bodies crave consistency. I have also been using it to track what times I go to sleep and wake up, because, again, I am all over the place in that area too.

I have at least one kale/fruit smoothie every day to replace a meal (banana, greek yogurt, kale, oranges, frozen blueberries & others, ginger, water). I am trying to eat more eggs (not adding cheese is haard). Dessert is an apple with almond or sunflower nut butter (I'm allergic to peanuts). I am eating steal cut oats for breakfast and snacks sometimes. Green tea and lots of water every day (the tea helps my mind and body understand that meal time is over).

What I am craving (sorry ahead of time :(): sandwiches, macaroni & cheese, pasta, chips & guacamole, bagel & cream cheese, Chinese food, burritos, a bacon cheeseburger, and candy. (I am obviously more of a salty/savory-tooth than a sweet one). Ok so those are the things I am craving and NOT going to eat for the next month. After my Short Shorts Convention, I'm sure I'll indulge sometimes but I really want to make a lifestyle change where those indulgences really are that- a treat, an extra, a luxury.

I started doing 30 minute youtube workout videos. Jillian Micahels has a good ab one that I can do in my room. There are lots of good ones out there and they're FREE. I love the ones that use your own body weight as resistance and that you can do in a small space like your own room. Something that isn't free and rather expensive actually, that I ordered yesterday, is the "Insanity" workout DVDs. It is a 60-day 40-minute per day program that a few acquaintances have done and I am set on completing. They hopefully arrive by the end of the week and I am pumped! These are meant to do in a small space and you don't need weights. I am getting into these videos because as much as I LOVE running outside in the city and getting lost and seeing people and architecture and spending time with my dog, sometimes I really just do not want to leave the house! Seriously though. Plus I can do them if it's dark outside. I can do them before going to work super quick. And best of all I can wear my freaking pajamas.

Wooowee Sorry for the long message, guys, but I really wanted to put it all out there so it feels like I told someone and see if that helps me stick to better habits every day.

Good luck this week, everyone! Let's do this, son!

Eating one or no meals a day is NOT a good way to lose weight. It can lead to serious health consequences due to not getting enough nutrients. The minimum number of calories an adult should aim for is 1200 calories per day, but it depends on height, build, gender, activity level, etc. In your diet portion, Sparkpeople should have given you a minimum calorie range to aim for.
It isn't a matter of self control--it is a matter of what your body needs in order to continue functioning properly.

I also want to add that this was on her Sparkpage under the 'My Program' portion:

"Keeping within SP recommended calories every day. For the first 4 months I mainly kept from 1400-1500. Later, I tried to keep from 1200-1350. Now that I am so much more active, the range is up to 1620-1970 * Wow! Seems like a lot now, but I'm adjusting. "

I know it may seem counter-productive but you must eat a certain number of calories in the day to safely lose weight. If you don't get enough calories, your body may go into starvation mode, so you won't burn fat--you'll lose muscle tone.

Please, make sure you eat all your meals and snacks. In the long run, as long as you make healthy choices, it will definitely pay off.

I shop at Walmart for a lot of things, but not meat. Almost all of their meat has the 15% solution in it that's a headache trigger for me. So I go to Safeway for meat, and a few other things, every three weeks or so. I use their Just for U site to see what's on sale and that pretty much dictates what's on my meal plan for the next few weeks. I package the meat in individual servings and freeze it. After that I just decide day-to-day which meal I'm going to fix. I'm really not good at sticking to a weekly plan.

Betab - I just started but what I do is every three or four days I cook up a lot of chicken breast different ways, and a fridge full of veggies so it doesn't take long to whip up what what I want. I eat a lot of taco salad...no chips of course.

You would get more response if you asked in "the chit-chat" room.

Try drinking a glass of water before a meal and one or two after? And one before you go for that snack, and try making yourself remember to then wait fifteen minutes? But whatever you're doing, it's working! Keep it up!

Thanks for the encouragement. I gave myself a free day yesterday for Easter and am starting again today. With two brothers and a sister who are already type 2 diabetics, I really have a good reason to make this work and develop the healthy habits SparkPeople encourages. But not losing any weight when I think I'm doing everything right is a big disappointment, so I have to whine a bit.

Bebarb, like Peggers said, hang in there.

Make sure you are eating enough because if you don't eat enough, your body will go into starvation mode, and it will hold onto the fat it has. Also, make sure you aren't just going by weight. Remember, muscle does weigh more than fat, so you may not notice a change on the scale, but you might start noticing a change in the way your clothing fits after a while. Under the 'My Trackers' heading on your starting page, if you click track my weight, you have several other measurements you can track, and you can edit that to track more or less measurements than what they have showing.

Bebarb - hang in there! If you are eating right and exercising somethings going to happen! Make sure you are eating enough calories not to be in "starvation mode" and you should be ok!

Wow,
Everyone is doing so well and I still haven't lost a pound. Don't know what I'm doing wrong! If I don't eat enough by the end of the day I get a message telling me it's not good to do that, so cutting more calories is not the answer. And I am working out 45 minutes or more a day and trying different routines. I was dieting before I joined and not losing anything so maybe I was already on a plateau. I hope I get over it soon.

Day 7 - stood on the scales this morning, and had to weigh myself 3X - couldn't believe what the scale was showing. Down 6 lbs - wasn't expecting that at all. I know it is my first wk, and I know that # won't happen all the time. But it did make my day !!!

Weigh in was ok today. My scale shows a number 6.4 lbs lighter than the doctors office last week. I don't know if this is a loss or not since #1 different scale and #2 different time of day, but at least the number is lower. I will be using this scale from now on, so I won't know until my next doctors appointment how far off it is, but from now on it should be consistent.

SO far so good...lost 1 lb, but self concious and changing up work-outs so I don't get bored. Spin on bike even though there is no class, than on treadmill facing wall today instead of one facing outside with a lot of light. Just trying different options for everything. Do stomach excercises every gym visit now and feeling the difference. Drinking water and eating right, but still sneaking the sweets during the 3pm office break, ugh.

I would leave some of the teams that you are not being active in OR if you look at some of the posts, you'll see that THEY are not being that active on that team and devote your time to teams that motivate you, not just an additional team that wants to know if you drank water or weighed in. Find a team that supports you and keep the posts for those. Change the mail settings for the others. Some teams you might want to keep as resources, but you'll soon figure out which people you stay in touch with on a regular basis. Also, it seems all those digests must come out on Mondays. That doesn't mean you have to read them all on Monday. Check back with different teams throughout the week if you want to keep in touch or receive info but not leave them. If you got a bunch of those just read one. Read another one tomorrow. I'm the same way and I'm afraid I'll delete something that would've been helpful, but ultimately MOVING YOUR BODY is going to be more helpful than any tip you read and never carry out.

Everyone is doing so well, nice one. For the first time in year's I took the bull by the horns and went swimming. It was great, and strangely enough my energy levels are quite high, although I am just nicely relaxed.

Then....hubby was going out for a brisk walk, so I thought I would go with him, did a really nice brisk 20 mn walk, so far so good. That swimming though was brilliant I cannot wait to go again. Going to pop-over to the leisure centre to check out what classes are going on, I have the bug now.

The only concern is this, I cannot keep up with all the E-mails from SparkPeople. Motivational wise it's great, but what do I do exercise or sit and answer the hundreds of E-mails and get a fat derrier?? emoticon

I try to reply to the one's that state 'Reply' but they are swamping me and my evening is spent hogging the computer much to the annoyance of the rest of the family! What to do.

Tomorrow is my first weigh in and I have no idea what to expect (mostly because it is a different scale). I can't go to the doctor every week though so using my at home scale will make it easier to keep track. My food is still very difficult for me because I LOVE carbs and now have to limit them. In the past I never had trouble keeping my calories and fat down because I didn't have to worry about the number of carbs. I am getting tired of salad for lunch already and it has only been a week.

I love water and drink tons of it, so that has been the easiest part for me. I am struggling right now to get my workouts in. I can do the few minutes here and there, but I like to have a long workout to feel like I 'did' something. I was able to get in an hour last night and I should be able to get another in tonight. The rest of the week will be tough.

FWIW, I would not count coffee as water unless you drink decaf, because caffeine is a diuretic and can be dehydrating.

Had a pretty good first week. Lost about 4.2 lbs. Signed up to A LOT of teams! The most supportive team so far is the Partnership for Accountability team, emoticon because you actually partner up with people to be accountable to which helps a lot. I'm glad I have been keeping track of nutrition, because my problem is usually not having enough calories. I'm usually low on protein, so I added a protein shake as my morning snack.
emoticon I don't worry about water too much, because I've also heard that water dilutes the stomach acid making it harder for you to digest food.
So, I usually drink water when I need a sip during a workout or if I feel hungry but it's not mealltime then if you have a glass of water often times you'll find you are thirsty not hungry. Also you might be getting more "water" than you think if you are drinking coffee emoticon and eating high water content vegetables and fruits. emoticon emoticon
Copy link about water into your browser, definitely something to think about:

My first week went great and I lost three pounds! I have done very well on nutrition, and thanks to the tracker I can see where I am struggling with getting enough of some of the minerals. Drinking all that water is a challenge also, but I have managed to drink my 8 glasses every day.

I was just coming over to start a thread checking on everyone's first week. I love that one of you has already done that!

It looks like there will definitely be some celebrations. If things didn't go quite as you planned, don't sweat it. I have learned during my long journey that you can't change the past. Forgive yourself and move forward. We all will have those times. I still struggle with it and I'm over 2 years into maintenance.

We are all in this together!

It is 5:45 am Guelph Ontario, Canada time and can no longer sleep. Slept alot yesterday so knew I'd be up early today. Night Shift does this to me on my days off.

Not a bad wknd overall. Eating was not the greatest, but did get some walking in (even if it was not planned)

Because I started late in the wk, I will consider this my first official wk on SP. So Friday will me my weigh in day and my check in day for how things are going overall.

Adjusting to a new weight loss program can be hard, but I know we can all do it. We have each other for support and we are probably going thru some of the same battles with food and exercise. Don't be afraid to talk about it, we are all here to help.

I have a wkness for Mars Chocolate Bars - especially during PMS so my hubby is so kind to buy them for me when he sees my mood swings - he has always picked up on that even before I figure out why I want to hit someone and scream bloody murder !! I usually don't let it bother me too much because I log it in and adjust my eating around those extra calories - thankfully because of my age those mood swings are growing further apart and one day (soon I hope) they will stop.

Will be walking my grandson to school this wk again. I have not been able to because of Knee issues, but last wk I had a cortizone shot in my knee, and I can now walk without pain and limping. So going to give it the good old college try this morning !! emoticon

Have a good day everyone and emoticon emoticon

Interesting to see how folk are getting on with their first weeks :)...Keep going sparkers :D

Up early (like middle of the night UK time) cos I just slept all day yesterday cos mind was rotten....Depot shot is due and the increased meds aren't working yet. Pants...

Though am fully aware how easy it for me to lose weight if I stick to SP and know I mustn't lose too much (am actually only about 10 lbs over weight) otherwise doc will put me on weight gainers...

Even though I have a mile walk to the docs later I just so want to go out for my early am walk I think I will..so looking forward to it after a day indoors yesterday. Has to be done...

So just sitting here gearing up for that...

I did pretty good with my eating all week, (a little off last night) but struggled with exercise. I typically do get my workouts in, but this week was particularly crazy and next week isn't looking much better, so I'm going to have to figure something out.

One thing that really surprised me this week was the amount of sodium I have been taking in. It's on the high end of the range and I have gone over a few days. I will need to start watching that closer.

Mmmbacon - I also just switched from WW and like seeing my target numbers. I love the simplicity of the points, but I found myself "working the system" and fooling myself into thinking I was eating better than I was.

My first week has been a mix of great and not so great. I met my daily goals of exercising at least 10 min, drinking water and blogging every day, even though I barely squeaked a work out in last night. Food has been a disaster though. We have been glued to the TV watching basketball and eating pizza. oops :)

I am getting into exercising now for just 10 mns a day, which suits me fine. Although today my second day on SP i struggeled something rotten and the last 9mns or so from the end of my exercise I was clinging onto the machine. I giggle about it now.

I weighed myself last night and got the shock of my life my weight has ballooned from what I originally belived it to be. But got over that now. The only problem with me is that I have such bad, severe headaches that I have to take regular medication every night and two of the side effects are Sleepiness and it increases your appetite! So i am battling against the pills. But it's ok I will get there. On a positive note at least now I am moving my body and eating properly not snacking on junk all the time. emoticon emoticon

Och you can do it Sara :)...Hugs

Well I was hoping to be down to 76.5 today but no joy cos I had a huge yoghurt last night so like 76.8...which is okay. If I can get down to 76.2 this week I'll be happy...

Anyhow been in bed all day with paranoia so like not eaten much so just about to drink my water and read my bible and go from there.

Got GP tomorrow and it's a 25-30 minute walk each way so if I wrap up warm and put on my music I should be fine for exercise...

Blessings folks

Jo

I just rejoined Friday, so have not had much time to adjust to all this. Wknds are the hardest for me - too much going on and find I don't eat proper or on time. Usually grabbing whatever , wherever, and whenever!!

I am determined to make this happen this time. I need to lose or I will continue to have the health problems I have and I am also tired the of Dr's saying "If you lose a few lbs, it will be better for you", but none of them offer any help in doing this, even after you tell them you have been trying for X amount of yrs!!

So cheers to us !!

There is only one way to succeed in anything, and that is to give it everything.

You have not failed until you quit trying!!

I just had my first WI on Spark - down 3.2 pounds this week! Which is very encouraging considering the amount of strength training I've been doing.

I upped the recommended calorie range quite a bit - I've been on Spark before and found the low recommendations to be my biggest enemy (I was hungry, grumpy, and feeling deprived/bingey). I just switched over from WW, so I made it roughly equivalent, and will continue to change it as I lose. I love Spark because it's much more accurate, and I feel like I have so much flexibility to eat all of the foods that I love - healthy, indulgent, and otherwise

As for teams, I love the Done girls (Done Being the Fat Girl team).

Hang in there Jo! Remember that the process will have lots of ups and downs (literally and figuratively), and it's soooooo doable and worth it!

Just for your highs and lows of spark people. It's the first week and weigh ins will be looming all too soon. Have you managed to log your food and drink your water? How have you found it. If you've done SP before how have you found rejoining SP? Any really neat teams you've joined?

For me I haven't logged each day and I found my mega low cal hummus recipe a nightmare (and needed garlic). I just can't live on less than 250 cals for lunch anymore LOL....

On the positives am now hopefully back on track but have to stop eating all that cake (homemade...sooo tempting) at the women's group and eating out so much (I have a favourite cafe on the way to volunteering.. - fab good value homemade food).

So here's hoping tomorrow I'll be down but who knows?

Jo
