Welcome to the team! I love that we have a place to support each other through this way of eating.

Yeah on increasing your fat intake and dropping the weight! I too have to follow 75-80% fat intake in order to lose weight. Otherwise I just don't. So I listen to my body and go for it. ...yum!

Not a problem LITTLEWIND53- I totally understand!

Whoa MOTHERBEAR4- how do you eat all of that fat? That is a problem I am finding. But I guess what I am doing now is working with the addition of the bulletproof coffee - I have lost another 2 pounds so yeah! I am down to 320 and I haven't budged in so long.

What is awesome is I know I can stick to this one because I do not crave anything. In fact I am finding it hard to eat even a small plate of food sometimes.

And I like veggies now- but I put Alfredo sauce on everything.

I am wondering what the KETO FLU is- it is a deep body ache? If I do any excessive at all I hurt! and it seems like it is all the way to the bone. I went swimming with my kids yesterday and I hurt everywhere today.

Thanks everyone for your help- I am excited that I am going in the right direction now!

Okay - Don't panic!!!!!

So the calculations to lose 2 lbs a week are my minimum settings and the 1lb a week is my max settings. Also when you lose like 10-20 lbs you should calculate again and change settings.

I use 80% fat, 15% protein and 5% carbs. I also added on to my tracker to track carbs for a low carb diet. This will subtract the fiber in your food to actual give you an accurate daily carb reading (which will not be in the main tracker totals).

The reason I follow the 80-15-5 is because of Stephanie - She is also in that KETO CLARITY book which I have preordered from Amazon.

She also has a facebook page - She self taught herself to heal her mother who I think was getting alzemiers (sp) and turn her mother's health around.

This can be done - you just need to get the ratios right. I try everyday to get to my ratios and sometimes I fail. but I don't get discouraged.

For me at 190 lbs ((I lost 57 since end of September 2013) my carbs are 14-20 grams, Fat is 98-142 grams and protein is 41-60 grams. I have maintained 190 since 6/6/14. To many social things this summer.

But I love eating bacon, sausage, eggs, Dark meat of the chicken and crispy skin, Pork rinds, etc. and cooking with butter, bacon grease, olive oil, coconut oil. I add coconut oil to my coffee and I use it to moisturize my skin.

You should eat FULL FAT nothing low fat, eliminate or limit processed foods (wheat, rice, pasta) Fruit to one serving a day. I use coconut milk to make smoothie and cook with too. Stevia by sweet leaf as my sugar. Sea Salt (from health food store) as my salt. Drink plenty of water - There's lots of info in the group forums.

Usually people who start this may get what is called the KETO FLU which basically your body's response to the healthy changes which doesn't last long. You are getting your body to burn the fat off and using ketones to fuel your brain. Carbs make your brain FOGGY.

Also if you want to know more how we got this Standard American Diet stuff that is brainwashing almost everyone read "Death by Food Pyramid". That is an eye opener.

I am a member of several groups - Paleo, Primal, Low carb. The weight I am now I had not been since 1993. I am constantly learning about KETO - and thanks for the link to Maria's blog which I will bookmark.

Sorry..... I have vision problems and everything is blurry and I don't always interpret the blurr correctly.......... I thought you had gone from 336 to 328.......

I am not sure why I do not get this message in my email- I have to figure that out.

Thank you for your advice I am definitely taking it- LITTLEWIND53- I am not sure where you got that I lost 8 pounds... I wish! My post is that I gained and kept gaining - last week I gained 2 pounds a day- and then today finally I went back to my lowest weight in the 3 weeks 322.

This is what happened :

Start weight 326

next weight 322

next weight 324

next weight 328

yesterday (crying 330)

today 322!!!!!! very weird.

all weighing in the morning - no clothes

I guess I have never been normal so I will probably not start now- but here is my weight loss so far : starting at 326- 322 = 4 pounds in 4 weeks. I will take it.

My mom lost 6 pounds in 1 week! I guess keto is unpredictable? All I know is I am going to stick with it even though the scale is really weird. If I average out to 1 pound a week I am still happy. But what is with the 8 pound weight gain- has that happened to anyone else?

p.s. edit I did take the advice and added more fat and added the bullet proof coffee the last 3 days

Welcome to the team!

I've been doing Keto (modified) for 3 weeks now and have lost 12 pounds. I see a daily change in the ketosis strips, so I think that is normal. I've done Atkins and Keto and like this much better. I keep my carbs down to under 40 grams. This is just my body. I'm sure I'd lose more weight if I could keep them under 20 grams but I just don't want to be that strict.

From everything I've read all I can tell you is that the more fat you add in the better. The body turns extra protein into glucose to burn instead of burning the body fat you want it to. The point of Keto isn't high protein and low carb, it's high fat and low carb. I find that adding butter to my steaks, eating chicken with the skin, cooking with healthy oils, and using mayo and bacon grease helps increase my fat grams. The more fat you add the more you'll see your body change....and you won't be nearly as hungry.

I weigh myself every day, but every day before I step on that scale I remind myself that the body isn't a calculator, that it can retain water, and the tiniest change in food/hormones can cause small gains that aren't permanent. For example, this weekend I stayed on plan but drank too much diet soda, which I don't drink during the week. I woke up on Monday with a 2 pound gain. I drank loads of water yesterday and this morning I'm down 3 pounds. Anything can make that number change...it's the overall direction that you want to pay attention to.

You should think of this process as an experiment. You didn't gain the weight overnight and it won't come off that way either (cliche but true). You have time to adjust things and figure out what works for you. I suggest you spend a week or two cutting back your protein and adding in more healthy saturated fats. Don't go too insane with the low-carb, try keeping it under 30 or 40g and see how it goes. Drink tons of water. Focus on getting that fat percentage up to about 60% or more of your daily calories and watch what your body does. Don't be surprised to see a week of tummy issues, though. It takes some time for the body to adapt to eating that much fat. I'm 3 weeks in and I only started having solid poops again by the end of week 2.

I find that this strategy works really well for me, and I try to stick to as little processed foods as possible. I'm finding this way of eating much easier than Atkins. Knowing I have a little play room allows me to eat some veggies I enjoy, play a little with dairy, etc. Keeping it to under 20 grams is just to restrictive for me.

Just keep remembering that this is a long journey and you have time to get things to that sweet spot...that perfect alignment of health and happiness. Don't push yourself to reach that immediately. Give yourself a break and allow yourself to make mistakes. You can totally do this!!

Hi, having being doing keto for 7 weeks now, but the scale seems to play jokes with me. Up 1kg next week down and then up 1kg.
So frustrating I wanted to cry. Now I just don't go on the scale. All I know is my body feels and moves better. It will take a long time for my body to recognise what I'm doing is good for it. I think your patience will be rewarded.
I also stopped the bullet proof coffees and fat bombs so I can shift some weight.
Also try and stay away from dairy for now.

I am still very new to Keto and after several weeks, I see no changes on my strips..... So I really cannot say.

But I do know that every body is different, and what works for one, may not work for another. I must say congrats on the weight you have lost. To me, 8 pounds in 3 weeks seems VERY good....

There are many sites that can help you get your ratio's right, and for what I have read they are all advocating high fat, moderate protein and low carb. Do you know what percentage you get of each????? If you are low on fat, there are some great recipes for "fat bombs" Check out the recipe forum.....

Read some of the other threads here, You will find links posted that can give you further information....

Good luck to you and let us know how you are doing....

Hello everyone- I am new to keto but I am on week 3 of low carbing it after watching the Fat Head movie. I am not sure what I am doing wrong- I have the keto strips and I have been in ketosis for 3 days now but it took a long time to get here- and I weigh myself every day which I probably shouldn't do.

I started at 326 lbs then went to 322 then went to 324 and now I am at 328!

What am I doing wrong - I can't find any info except for that I cut my carbs down below 20 and I have been really strict about that.

Not sure about adding fat? But I have been doing what I think is mostly Atkins without knowing much about it- I really need to lose weight I thought if I cut down the carbs and went into ketosis it would be an automatic thing. Maybe I am just one of those people who gain weight no matter what? emoticon
