I'm new to Keto. I used one of the calculators suggested below. Now I have my numbers and I just need to plan my foods to meet it.

1259 kcal Daily Calorie Intake
25 g Carbohydrates (8%, 100 kcal)
75 g Protein (24%, 300 kcal)
95 g Fat (68%, 859 kcal)

Thanks I did that one too. I think if I ignore the calories somewhat I think I need to increase my fat. I am losing about 1/2 pound a week the way I am doing it now so maybe a little tweaking could not hurt.

Thanks for sharing those calculators. I am still learning a lot about this way of life. I read everything I can. I really do not follow any specific plan. I just focus on low carbs and real food.

did you try this one. I read you really don't fret too much about calories if you got your ratios right.

Hi Jen! Well, the answer to your question is very individual. If you are still losing and staying at 1300 calories....AND you aren't starving and frustrated, then you can just stick with that. If you start stalling though, then perhaps add in more fat to bump up your calories and your fat intake and see if the changes help. Keep us posted!!

I tried that calculator and it came out to 1900 calories per day. Can that be right? I am doing 1300 now 60/30/10. Should I change this? Any advise would be great.

Here's ruled.me's calculator; I used it this morning.

All the different calculator's numbers are similar....

Those numbers don't seem right at all! 700 cals a day is WAY too low! And the percentages should be somewhere around 75% fat, 20% protein, and 5% carbs.

This is what I got

Your Personal Results

Here are your personal macros:

692 kcal Daily Calorie Intake
25 g Carbohydrates (14%, 100 kcal)
76 g Protein (44%, 304 kcal)
32 g Fat (42%, 288 kcal)

If these numbers are too confusing, here is a visual representation of your macros and your deficit. The size of each area is correctly scaled based on your ratios.

does that mean lonely eat 700 calories a day? I went on a diet like that before it was NO carb..... Any suggestions? I need to see if a cook book would work for me.

MISSCUS ~ I am using the Spark nutrition tracker. I change the grams to what I need in F/C/P areas - add to track also the carbs for a low carb diet so that it subtracts the fiber automatically to get that daily total.

Now to see that percentage pie chart you click on daily feedback and the charts are near the bottom.

I use sweetleat stevia as my sugar.

MOTHERBEAR...WHAT food tracker are you using? I also like to see the pie chart that shows the % of fat, protein and carbs. Then I tweak my foods for the day to get it as darn near perfect as I can. However, I just realized that Hall's Cough Drops, has bumped me to the 10-12% level of carbs. I only have a couple, but the sugar sure adds up!! Going to buy the sugar free. I always get a dry raspy throat at night, breathing through my mouth. It's just not something you can just stop doing either.

ARINAR AND BAMATEACHER, I love my BPC. I am typical, I also use 1 TB coconut oil, and 1 TB butter. I need to buy unsalted butter though. I put this in 2 shots of espresso from my machine, with a tsp of erythritol or xylitol, or yucky splenda if that's all I have. I cannot, and have never been able to drink coffee without a bit of sweetener. I've never used sugars though.

Today I'm making Almond Joy Fat Bombs. And this weekend after I grocery shop, I'm making the Key Lime Cheesecake Fat Bombs. I must have one each day, to get my fat intake up to where it needs to be. BUT I DO LOVE THEM!! It's like eating candy, and the funny thing is that I've never been a regular candy eater, maybe only every couple weeks I'd have a Reese's PB Cup. I guess that's why I like the Ketogenic Reese's Peanut Butter Cup Fat Bomb recipe so much.I use Hershey Special Dark Cocoa, it's yummy. I did try using 1 1/2 tsp, and it was too much cocoa. Made it bitter. So back to following recipe at only 1 tsp. I use xylitol for sweetener, since it keeps me regular LOL. I

I'm thinking about trying Keto/bulletproof coffee again. It's never been one of my favorites, but so many say it's all they need in the mornings, I'm willing to give it a shot again.

Martina from KetoDietApp uses coconut oil and butter and then lists optional ingredients such as egg yolks, gelatin or other protein powder, coconut milk, cinnamon or vanilla, liquid stevia.

I've gotten used to non-sweetened coffee and actually prefer it that way. Right now I just use coconut milk, but I might play around with some of these other options. She says the Tbsp coconut oil and Tbsp butter are the essential ingredients.

I got silicone molds from Amazon yesterday. I'm going to try to make some low-carb gelatin treats in them.

I love clicking the daily feedback button on the nutrition tracker to see my percentage chart ~ do it several times as I tweak my ratios too!

My coffee has has 1 TBS of Coconut Oil with the stevia and a little flavored creamer. I have this big Starbucks ceramic cup (holds 2 cups i think) have 2 of these in the morning.

Today I also ate eggs & oatmeal too for extra energy since I am helping BFF pack some stuff up of her daughter's later this morning.

Since I have soooo many molds for my products, I was considering using some of the candy sized molds for Fat Bombs. But, my molds are dedicated to only my products, as is my blender, and other pots and utensils.

However, I MUST eat an entire Fat Bomb to get my fat level up to the keto 70-25-5% ranges. I still use MyFitnessPal, since you can see the % pie chart, and then tweak your macronutrients to get the %'s correct. Awww, poor me! I must eat a whole Reese's Fat Bomb. And I'm also including a bulletproof coffee in the morning. I do love those two things in my diet. I go to sleep thinking about my Keto coffee, and then in the morning, I await the moment when I go make a Fat Bomb, and then try to forget about it for a while so it can freeze. Then all of a sudden, I remember it, and sitting here at my computer (where most of my work is these days) I sit and eat it and listen to my music on iTunes.

I am in heaven during those moments. Within 30 min after having my Keto coffee, I am already up and moving!! Since DH has been gone, he left saturday am for California family visit. I have reverted back to a night shift. Went to sleep at 6am last 3 days. Got up at 11am. I've gotten soooo much done!

My dear dear sister is trying so hard to stay Keto. But she's stuck with this "Ideal Protein" program, and seriously, the carbs are just too high to stay good in Keto. Every night I take a screenshot on my phone of my % Pie Chart and text it to her. She needs to text me hers!!! LOL.

FYI, I found silicone candy molds at the .99c store for, you got it, .99c! There were actually in the children's toy section but they make nice candy sized fat bombs.

Here's another great site, with a great Recipe tab. I LOVE THE FAT BOMB recipe with peanut butter and cocoa. It's just that, to help you get your fat intake up in a palatable way. You'd swear you were eating a Reeses Pnut Butter cup. So keto, so good! emoticon
www.ruled.me/

These are the silicone cupcake liners that I use for the Fat Bomb. I divide the recipe into two cupcakes and freeze them. They freeze much faster! They are a bit pricey, but not taking care of myself, is even pricier.....

Hello everyone. Been awhile since I've posted here. Well, it's been over 4 months now and the weight continues to drop, slowly, but in the right direction. I've used my blood ketone meter to help tweak how much carb and protein I need to remain in ketosis. For me protein is as huge a factor in my blood ketone (BK) level as carbs.

I also found this website (link below) about 5 weeks ago and started computing my meals and my daily intake in terms of ketogenic to anti-ketogenic ratio and it's helped.

www.mydreamshape.com/keto-calculator
/

I know if I eat more carbs or protein than the calculator recommends (goals), by adding fat to get me to my ketogenic ratio (for me my KR is 2.24) even consuming way more calories, my BKs are just fine. It's empowering. So check out the link above and let me know what you think. I'm now at a goal of 50g of protein, 118 of fat and still under 20 on carbs. Calories are now around 1,330 to lose and it's working.

Good for you searching out what you need to do what you have to for yourself.
I wish you the very best. I know to lose I have to be lower than many think. I am not pushing low calories right now. I have to get feeling better. I am maintaining.

Which is working as I am feeling a lot better, in another week or so I hopefully will be ready to work on dropping some weight.

Walk through your journey with a loving open heart and as well mind. Treat others as you would like to be treated.

I've decided to change my goals a bit. I posted at a lowcarb forum to find out about exceeding my calories in order to get any where close to my low end of my FAT goal and got some good advice. Several agreed so I've reduced my FAT in order to keep from exceeding my calories.

MY NEW GOALS FOLLOWING THE GUIDELINES BELOW --

Protein - 65g
Carbs - 0 to 20 g
FAT - 110to 129
Calories - 1,500

This makes sense to me -

Percentages don't matter. There is no specific requirement for amount of dietary fat, other than an absolute minimum of 30 g/day to prevent gall bladder issues (though higher is of course better and recommended on the NK WOE).

What you are supposed to do is eat the correct grams of protein for your lean body mass, eat the amount of carbs you desire, such as to stay in ketosis, and then eat the rest of your calories from fat.

EXAMPLE - I shoot for about 70 g protein a day, carbs vary but I have 25 net as my goal (35 total, 10 g fiber), and the rest from fat, which is about 110 g to get to 1400 calories. If I go over or under calories it should ideally be from variations in fat consumption (though in reality that isn't always the case).

Remember if you are eating at a calorie deficit (to lose weight) your body will also use additional fat from your body stores as a source of calories, not just the fat calories you consume.

I think many doctors are held to the standards of their boards, and actually seldom believe us. I can tell him one thing and he will believe what he chooses. If I gain he will blame it on me over eating. Or worse yet, treat me as a liar. Because his science teachings tell him different. I even mentioned to the staff about worrying about GMO, vegetarian feed and antibiotic and hormone food items, they dismissed me and passed over that conversation. I am 56 years old, battled weight half of my life, have health issues and even when they claim they are not prejudice against obese older people, they still dismiss us to easily.

Oh you sound so much like me, I have really messed up myself with extremes too. UGH.

I own that movie! And just recently re-watched it.

Good on your for being so active and physical with your health plan! WOW!

To find our sweet spot where we have energy, burning fat and meeting our needs, is truly the key. It sounds like you have put your work in too. Oh to have that magic wand, would be so wonderful.

My best to you and with great success.

By the way...I've read a lot of information from doctors who say a Keto diet is especially beneficial to those who ADHD, MS, Autoimmune illnesses, and some others...so it really surprises me, especially coming from the renowned Mayo Clinic, that he is so biased about it for weight loss too!

Lol..I know what you mean. I don't understand why some doctors won't take our word for it...we do spend ALL the time with ourselves...can't really put all the blame on them, a lot of people say they are trying everything to lose the weight but in reality very few do...but we're not one of them...

I came to my numbers through trial and error over the years...I have gone as low as 600 calories without any weight loss whatsoever and actually felt my body shutting down...I increased to 800, then 1000, then 1200, then 1500...all the while never losing at all...I only seem to kickstart my weight loss when my calories are 1800...as long as it's low carb that is...

Of course because I'm still getting over the prejudices of the past low cal-low fat- diet philosophy that was ingrained in my head at an early age, it makes it hard for me to reach 1800 and stay there without panicking...this time I will because I know for a fact that with Keto it really works for me to lose...fat helps lose fat, right? I have been so "fat" deprived over the years by limiting it because of the "low fat" diets that I now see how much my body needs it...and not just from a weight loss standpoint...mental clarity, clearer skin, less allergies, my health improves a lot with a higher fat intake...So I'm slowly getting up to 1800...normally I just average 1200

It's funny you mention the brain...I just watched the documentary "The Perfect Human Diet" with CJ Hunt where he tracks down scientists, archaeologists and finds out from history what the human diet was and what happened to cause the obesity epidemic...the scientists and archaeologists have analyzed neanderthals and early man fossils and determined that the fact they ate a high protein, high fat diet is the reason our brains evolved to the intelligence levels that helped differentiate us from animals, primates and so forth...as well as the fact that we were lean, mean hunter/gatherer machines...they go so far as to show a timeline using the 40 yard line in the football field where it shows that early man's way of eating lasted millions of years, taking up over 39.95 yards and that the current model of eating has only been around for less than a 100 years...they say "now which is the fad diet and which is more natural to us?"...lol...I love it

Your doctor as many are uninformed and uneducated, sorry but mine is too. He is with keto for brain issues, but not for weight loss. I need both go figure LOL He wanted me to see another doctor to help me lose weight as he believes that he has done as much as he can for my MS. I believe doing ketosis is what has helped not him. The Mayo clinic is where I doctor and I am not going to do their diet plan. No way! I will work on me and using a ketogenic diet plan. I am lower fat around 60% right now, but as soon as I can I will try upping it again. I am just slowly working toward a higher number. I am still in ketosis (very low though) eating a few more veggies.

What happens when you add more fat? You have room to go up to 1800 right?
Are these the numbers you decided on or a program/site?

What I did to find my numbers was; actually took a few weeks and charted everything, from food to activities to see what I would have to eat to gain and on what days I would eat higher calories and lower calories. It took me awhile to figure out for me that my high number where I gained was 1500, maintained 1300 and lost at 1100. On my higher days I made it as well my workout day. My system is very messed up and it takes an act of God for me to lose. But I am more about the health right now, and hopefully when I get a handle on that, the weight will start to come off again.

Basically, I'm trying to do the 70F/25P/5C ratios or as close to it as I can get. I am a heavy weight lifter and heavy into cardio, but I haven't been eating enough (yes, everyone is always stunned even my trainers say the only problem they have with me is that I don't eat enough!). Ideally, my calories should be around 1800 for the amount of activity I do...I've always been under 1500 (yet no weight loss go figure!)...hence the fact that I have almost shut down my metabolic processes...I suffer from Hashimoto's disease, arthritis, sleep apnea, allergies and gastro-intesitinal issues...so it's always very challenging to juggle everything...

Surprisingly...when I did Keto at the end of last year and beginning of this one...all my symptoms improved greatly and even though I've always had great blood work (never suffered from bad cholesterol or bad triglycerides, or high blood pressure, or any hypoglycemic/diabetic issues)...I proved to my doctor (who warned me about KETO not being healthy for me...blah, blah, blah) that my body's reaction to KETO was to finally start healing itself and get me feeling better than I ever did without any meds!

Here is a good place to start...explore. There are dual (ketone/glucose) strips that work together usually. Cost a bit those darn papers. This is the cheapest I have found.

My insurance doesn't cover them at all, cool if you could get a script for them.

Thanks, Erin. I will use the site.

I want to get a blood ketone tester. I will ask my doc about it.

It seems like there as many methods for calculating how much protein, fat and carbs we're supposed to eat to get into ketosis as there are diets!!

Which method did you use and are you finding it successful? Can you share your breakout?

How many of you are "tracking" in a nutrition database to make sure you are meeting your goals? If you aren't tracking are you losing? or maintaining?

Do you test via "blood" or "urine" to ensure you're in ketosis? Do you care?

I used the formula from the "Optimal Diet" by Jan Kwasniewski. I ran across it on a website. My breakout is as follows -

165.1 cm height
65.1 kg ideal body weight (143.5 lbs)
65.1g Protein + 10% = 71.6g
179g - 251g for fat range
33 to 36g for carbs

I went to a website to check my daily calorie requirements and it was: 1,916 per day
My calorie goals are: 1,500 - 1,800 per day

I'm going to start at 1,500 calories and go from there and will try to limit my carbs to 25 as I really don't think carbs agree with me.

I now have migraine.........lol. Too much thinking and my face is so fat my glasses are too tight!! ;)

Thank you in advance for sharing!!

D
