Thank you - did I read that 2 TBSP of hummus can be a "flavoring" vs using it as a carb?

I thought of something else I enjoy that doesn't require a fat.. Homemade Taco salad. Brown up your ground turkey breast with "smart" chili type flavorings and serve it over lettuce and other veggies as a taco salad. Use salsa or hot sauce as "flavoring" and 1/2 cup beans as your carb. This I could eat daily-with beans on HC days and without on LC days.

Also for me it doesn't work to combine two meals together because I get real hungry and then when I go out to eat it is SO much harder for me to eat appropriately. Everyone is probably different but I tend to go low calorie for that mini meal before going out to eat but I don't skip it.

Hi all,

I joined this team and think I may give this a try. I have the book and read most of it. I think I'll try the Classic plan and save the turbo for if/when I hit a stall.

I have a couple of questions and concerns and I thought maybe some of you more experienced Carb Cyclers could comment.

1) I have figured out how to get in my veggies on LC days easily, since fat is allowed. However, on HC days I can't imagine eating a cup of green beans (for example) without some healthy fat.. or a salad without some dressing.. What does everyone else do? Here are some things I came up with that wouldn't require fat and would love some add'l suggestions:

Cucumbers and onions/vinegar salad
Sugar Free pickled beets
Greens in green smoothies
Celery or carrot Stix (boring!!)
Homemade veggie soup or cabbage soup
Zucchini noodles
Sliced tomatoes and other veggies stuffed into a wrap or sandwich with mustard.

2) I dine out several times a week. I am tempted on those days to combine two mini-meals into one larger meal. I'd stick with the LC or HC day as best as I can. How horrible would that be?

3) I often wake up late (like 8 a.m.) because I am retired, AND I have to wait an hour after taking a pill for my thyroid in the a.m. before eating. This would make my last meal at 9 PM.. I just don't want to eat anything that late.. I am not really an after-dinner snacker. On these days I'd want to combine my dinner and after dinner snack. Again, how horrible would that be?

I can't help but think that I would still get results since I have over 100 lbs to lose. This would be a huge change for the better.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a bunch!

Judy

Thanks for the answer. I am so glad that I was on the right track. Today, I was on a High Carb day and found me at the higher end of the alloted carbs. Hopefully I am doing this correctly. Thanks for all the help

Laura,

Your carb level is about what I get on my low carb days when I tally up the numbers. He does not specify in the book - and I find that both frustrating and liberating. In the end, I just try to make sure I follow the guidelines in general and not get too hung up on details (after all, what is a thumb-sized portion of salad dressing, or is it a thumb-tip sized portion) Good luck to you, and let us know how it goes.

Hello all,
I just started Carb Cycling today and was wondering how many on the average should you have in the period of a day? For the day which is a low carb day, i ended up with 73. Should it be lower? If so by how much?
Thanks in advance for answering my question

He gives lists of what to eat for low carb veggies and what veggies can be used on high carb days. You two could look up the nutrition contents on each and see what the carb numbers are and make some lists?

Thanks for all the feedback. I just reall wish there were numbers or a range associated with high carb vs. low carb.

SAM, I would use regular PB and use it on low carb days. Sometimes when we try to buy "healthier" versions of foods, they up the carbs, fat or sodium to make up for subtracting a fat a carb or sodium. It's a catch 22

Low carb means a protein, two veggies that are low carb (at least) and a fat, so the bread can't be used on that day unless you use it for breakfast. It can be used on high carb and/or reward day though.
The peanut butter- I have no idea what the fat and carb count is for that kind, but you could compare it to regular peanut butter. It sounds more like a reward day thing if it's higher in carbs though.
Maybe others will have more thoughts on it all.

Can anyone tell me what constitutes low vs. high carb? Is there a number associated with a high carb item? For example, I have low carb bread. Can I eat it on a low carb or a high carb day? I also have a question about peanut butter. I enjoy Better n'Peanut Butter because of its low fat count, but the carb count is higher than natural nut butters? What is better, lower fat or carbs? What day should I eat it on?

It's cooked oatmeal. You go by your fist size though- so you can have more than 2/3 a cup of cooked oatmeal for a carb. My thoughts on it is that he gave us the 100 calories list to help us figure out how to get to the minimum on LC and HC days and/or make the calories last on rewards. :)

I have a question about oatmeal. In the book, it states that 2/3 cup is a 100 calorie serving. Is that dry oats or cooked? I love to eat oatmeal in the winter, but I was unclear about the serving size.

At Walmart. It's in their vitamin section. It's less than six dollars. The doc said the pill form of B vitamins your body will just pee out. Sublingual really works -my blood test proved it- before that he was wanting me to take shots to get SOME B. I'm so glad the sublingual B complex works so well. :) MUCH cheaper!

I'm wondering if you might want to add some sublingual B-complex since you're so tired. Maybe your thyroid isn't right. I am only guessing of course, since these things I was low on when I was so tired before. The sublingual b-complex brought things up to where the B levels needed to be at my next bloodwork.

WI was today, and I am only down .8 from last week, (where I have been for three days straight) which means at the end of 5 weeks, I am right back where I started. This week was my full week on since slingshot week (so I just finished week 5). I didn't wait, and went ahead and tweaked it this week. What I did to tweak it was not have 5 carb meals on my HC day. My body simply has never liked nor handled that many carbs a day, and I know this. So I went to two carb meals, and the other 3 low carb. Today is another HC day and I have only done two HC meals.
Serious frustration with the scale, however, let me tick off the things I have in non scale victories.
- the pants I tried on before beginning, now fit, and are wearable in public. 2 weeks ago they fit but I wouldn't have worn them in public. (too bad they are summer capris!)
- I have regularity in bathroom which is odd for me (gross I know, but true)
-my hands and feet had been peeling badly and they have cleared up
- my skin looks better
-I am stronger
-I haven't counted a single calorie in 2 weeks, and I am so happy to be released from that bondage! (I just go by the portion size he has set up for us)
The negatives:
-I am exhausted all the time. Every minute of the day, I am exhausted. I can't even imagine why, being I eat so many healthy foods
- the scale
So all in all girls, Pros vs the cons... I think we can see the scale isn't everything, which is a hard lesson for me to accept.
Also, I have had an epiphany from my husband reminding me that I hadn't eaten processed foods of any kind since May. And suddenly I start the plan, and on Sunday's reward day I consumed processed foods like they were going out of style. So, my body had no idea what I was doing to it. I have come to the conclusion that on reward day, I will still only eat whole foods, but use the reward portion of it to indulge in a combo of fat and carbs that we dont get all week long. Like Heidi Powell's peanut butter protein bars which have oats and honey. On a typical day I cant eat those because of the carbs and fats being combined. Or the caramel apple cake made with white whole wheat flour and agave syrup instead of sugar. See, treats and rewards but whole foods, clean eating type.
I will let you know next week how I did with the tweaks.
:) Thanks for the encouragement!

This is the response I got back from Heidi's admin on her website. I asked if maybe it just doesn't work on everyone because I've gained.
"Thereís more to measure than just the scale. Are you feeling it in your clothes being loose? How about your endurance on the exercise? Are your portions correct? Donít give up. Letís try boosting the intensity of your workouts and double check your portion sizes. Good luck! :)"
I'm kind mad at this answer, but I have started tweaking the program for myself, and fingers crossed, think I'm seeing some results.

One thing I truly dislike about this plan is that we are all guessing what, how, when. He never fully gives the specified answers. He never tells us what happens IF it doesn't work even for someone who is faithful and rigid on it, like me. After 4 weeks and being up 2.2 lbs from start is making me think maybe it doesn't work for everyone. If by some highly unlikely miracle I lose a bunch of weight this week, then I will come back and eat my words, but as it stands right now, I'm not very positive about it anymore, and quite frankly, I'm tired of going to bed at night feeling guilty like I am doing something wrong. My whole life has been blaming myself for not doing something right, and this is just something added onto it now. Knowing I am doing right, but being punished with weight gain.
I would feel better just going back to counting calories, never going above 1200 and at least knowing that when I gained it was because I slipped up. I'm certainly not liking that I follow every single darn thing the book says and I gain. That's just ridiculous. However, this is my reward day, and I vow to now eat processed foods, nor will I be eating crazy. Going right back to Turbo this week, perhaps my body will realize I'm doing it some good and let the weight go!
Happy for all of you that the plan works for. It would however be helpful of Chris set up his own message board for questions.

Samsullivan200, I'd say that they are allowed on the plan, yes, but would be a carb due to the amount of carbs in them. It's not a high carb amount- 9, if I'm reading it right, so up to you, but I'd not be afraid to have half another carb with it.

Yeah, I tend to think like this too. I had to let go of it some. I know the 100 calories chart is just to help you figure things out a bit better if/as needed.
It should be:
Breakfast: 3oz of protein meat (low fat), a cup of a carb, and 2 cups of veggies. That's what is needed for every breakfast for a woman. Of course you can substitute a low carb protein powder that is worth 15 grams of protein (give or take) instead of meat.

Every high carb meal can be the same as above, but on low carb day breakfast is the same as above, but you have a tbsp. of fat instead of your carb choice (which for a carb choice you can have a root vegetable, a fruit, or a grain) for the other four meals.

Every meal you can have up to 2 tbsp. of flavor shots if you want to.
1200 calories (though it can be higher- just as long as you're eating what you're supposed to) for low carb day.
1500 calories for high carb day (though I find it difficult to get there on those days).
Up to an added 1000 calories spread out over the meals for reward day.

Hello! I have read a lot on carb cycling, including Chris' two books. The one thing I'm having trouble with is the fact that I still don't quite understand how much to eat for each meal. I do much better if I have structure, such as being told I can eat x calories of x nutrient at each meal, etc. For example, I know he says to eat a "palm-sized portion" of protein for a serving but I want to know the exact amount. Even the recipes he provides seem to vary...some say 3 oz cooked ground turkey, some say 3.5 oz. So I am confused!!

So - If I am to stay at 1200 calories on a LC day (I am a woman), would I eat like this?

meal 1 (HC): 100 calories protein, 100 calories carbs, 50 calories flavorings/veggies
meal 2, 3, 4, and 5 (LC): 100 calories protein, 100 calories fat, 50 calories flavorings/veggies

Chris gives 100-calorie portion sizes/weights but if I only used those for each meal, that would be 300 calories a meal = 1500 calories

I'm sure, as usual, I am overthinking this - but like I said, I need structure or I will push the limits and not lose.

Thanks in advance for help!!

Am I reading right that on a LC day for my snack I could eat 4 boiled eggs & just take the yolk out of 2 of the eggs? Also, Could I just eat 2 boiled eggs? Or would that be unbalanced? I just think 4 boiled eggs would be hard for me to get down......thanks!

Well it does make sense since they have a bigger amount of carbs per cup. Thanks!

Ok ladies and gents, I asked Chris on his FB about carrots, squash and pumpkin, and this is the response I got back today:
~Chris Powell: Squash and pumpkin are veggies, and your carrots are a carb!~

I hope that clears it up for anyone who was wondering, and it sure was bugging the heck outta me! I am so glad to hear the answer!
Tomorrow is WI for week 2, after having gone through a reward day Sun. I'll let you all know how I did.

Startinginlimbo, I did exactly that, I a meal, meal, dessert, meal, dessert.
JHITCHCOC, I definitely feel the same way "made it through a reward day"!! By last night I was cursing the ground Chris stood on. I felt so horrible, and I wonder if that's not his ultimate goal, to make us realize eating how we used to makes us feel like crap! I was SO happy to get back on a low carb day today. I know we aren't supposed to WI again til Sat, but I did, because Im a rebel :P And I wanted to know. I had gained 2 lbs from Sat. So, now it's up to Chris's plan to get me back down those 2 and then some! I'm still not sold yet, being my first week.
Are you also training for your runs, or just using his workouts?

I just got "through" another cheat day. I too struggle to get up to the 2,400 calories. Funny. Had no problem before. Now I am so aware of how my body feels I look at foods and translate how that will feel after eating it.
I had planned for a piece of pumpkin pie. Had a piece which brought me to almost 2,400 calories but the other meals had me SO full. I had a hard time getting the pie down. This FEELS wrong this cheat day.

Anyway, glad to be on low carb day today and I guess that is what the cheat day is really about. Looking FORWARD to feeling hungry again.

Weight was down to 169lbs last weigh in. Normal BMI is 164 so almost there. I feel best though at 155lbs. Finally heading in that direction.

Also made some parmesaan cheese mistakes. Lots of salt in that. Felt yucky for a couple days.

Had a GREAT run this past Saturday. My pace is SO much faster and I feel strong.

It's in the Eating Forum part of the group, called What did you Eat on your Cheat Day, I believe. Here is where you can go right into it, push reply and write what you ate if you want:

Yep, when you try to cram that much junk into your system at a time you (me too) do feel that way. I found that I need to be sure to have protein too. You could always take some chromium to balance your blood sugar more. So maybe next time, a meal could be protein with fries and then a dessert. Another meal, protein, and dessert- not a huge one thousand calorie batch of carbs all in one meal. :) The protein can be something that isn't low in fat and/or salt on reward day. Like Chris says- it could be bacon. :)

I saw your comment, but where do you post the reward day's food you mentioned? I made up my 1000, but I really don't think I'll eat like this again. I feel like crap!

Hahaha, yes, you can have those things- just keep it to the five times a day, the every few hours thing. Eating cake and fries and brownie edges and reeses pieces and and and will make up the 1000, but that's a lot to eat in a short time, lol! You likely only have one meal left to go for the day, right? Have fun!

Well, I'm certainly gonna test his theory! :D I'm counting cals, and if I need 1,000 over my normal limit, I have 1,000 to go. Ugh!!
**edited**
Cause when he says eat what you want...well, I want cake, and fries, and brownie edges, and reeses pieces, and, and, and. Surely he can't mean that? I do stick to one portion and 5 meal times, just to let you know it's not an all day free for all.

I know! I felt that way the first time too. Now I'm just thrilled to go all out -mainly because it's so true, it does play with your metabolism and you do end up losing weight at the end of each week. Chris is right -we have to trust him on it. :)
Sure hope you got plenty of calories in!

Reward Day?!? Omg! This feels SO wrong! I went to Red Robin and had their Shroom burger, but only ate half my meal too. Still, I feel like I can't possibly eat everything I want in moderation at my 5 meals and lose weight. How can this be??
I assume you all have, how did you do your Reward days? Eat what you want all day at meal times, or still held back?

The book does list sites that probably do have answers. I'd have to go look through the book and find them and see. I guess you could. I did just ask at ask.com and I found this pumpkin pie recipe by Chris that is LOW carb. :) http://www.reshapethenation.com/blog/comme
nts/ode_to_the_pumpkin_pie/
This one lists squash for what is acceptable veg for the two fist sized portions, and so I'm sure that means all squash. http://millennialcareerwoman.files.wordpre

Thanks startinginlimbo! I saw that thread as I was looking yesterday, and one seemed sure of the answer, and another made her doubt the answer, so I figured I'd leave the question out there. Does Chris have his own message boards where we could get the answer?

No, do not have a fat with any breakfast, unless it's a reward day and you want to do it that day.

I know I'm suppose to eat carbs for breakfast no matter what the day is, but am I suppose to have a fat with breakfast as well?

I did the same thing with carrots at first.
Well, if it says squash under veggies, I'd say that includes both of them. I notice that pumpkin has a lot less carbs per cup than butternut squash though, so might want to be careful.
Another gal did answer in another area that she believed it'd be a high carb root type vegetable deal, likely due to how high the carbs are compared to other veggies. I guess it's up to you to decide? It would be good to know for sure. Hopefully someone does know what Chris has said about these two.

Question... I just discovered carrots are root vegetables, and are considered carbs, I have been eating them as vegetables. Oops.
Also, is pumpkin and butternut squash considered carbs or veggies, as it says squash under veggies and I thought that might only mean yellow squash. I however can not find squash under carbs. I read on Chris Powell's FB (I think it was there) a while ago that it is considered regular veggies. Does anyone have Chris's standard on this?

Thanks. Oh I know. It is often hard for me to get that many calories too. I figure I need to add more "flavor shots" or protein.
Yeah, no fat on high carb days. No fat for breakfast only on low carb days.
That's cool you're on turbo too.
Yes, the 9 minute missions are important. The "shredders" really are anything that will get your heart rate up so they can be anything you want to do for exercise. Therefore you can use your own workout plan, just adding the shapers for 9 minutes five days a week.

*Edit* Sorry, that went through before I finished. I like that his 9 min missions change for 4 weeks straight. That mixes things up so much so that I will never get bored.

Talleysgrl - I don't do the exercises from the book. I do my own exercise thing - biking, swimming, walking, kettlebells or a DVD workout. I have to change things up otherwise I know I'd get bored and not stick with it. I started working out in Mid-July and am still doing 5 - 6 days a week for 30 - 60 minutes per day. Good luck to you I'm on my 3rd week.

Startinginlimbo, that is great! 5 lbs in the first week. I'm telling you, I didn't get 1500 cals in with my high carb day yesterday, I just couldnt figure out how to do it with keeping all the portion sizes correct, even though I did eat all 5 meals. I figured out this morning that Im not supposed to eat fat with the high carb breakfast, or on the high carb meals. So, this being my first week, I figure it's my learning week. I'm also on Turbo. I love this plan, and since I ate this way mostly anyways, it's not too hard. Right now, it's just learning the schedule of it all and what goes where.
Is everyone doing the 9 min missions and shredders too? That's where it's hard for me, because I've had my own workout plan in motion for months now, cardio and strength training. However, I think for one month Ill do it his way, starting higher on the shredder time, and see how it goes.

Thanks for your reply on how your slingshot week went. I'm hoping mine goes as well. I'll have to watch my calories closer next week just to be sure I don't eat too many.

I haven't read book one but that's what it looks like each time I've read book two, yes- a total of two cups of veggies, each meal, or more (he says we can have as many as we'd like).

I'm feeling a bit confused. Am I reading correctly that no matter what Carb Cycle you choose you still have 2 handfuls of veggies with each meal?

Great to have you with us TALLEYSGRL. It's nice you got that first question answered by reading through.
I'm feeling like this plan is pretty doable. I'm definitely losing inches, and am a size down.
Like you, I started during a week, and I think it was a Thursday, but I had chosen my reward day for Sunday. So I did reward day that day, and by the next Saturday morning I had lost five pounds. I haven't lost so much in a week since, but did mess up with what I was eating (was having root veggies for regular veggies, and fat for low carb breakfasts, etc.) definitely inches. The plan definitely works. :)
It was cool to lose an inch in the hips and an inch in the waist on slingshot week!
As far as full weeks go, this is my fifth since starting the plan.
Oh, and I have been doing turbo all along.

Chefshutter, I did slingshot week for my first time last week. I lost an inch on my waist and an inch on my hips, and about a pound. When you think about it, you're still not taking in a whole lot of calories, even during high carb days. I'm looking forward to how it has revved up my metabolism to get losing the weight faster again. :)
