Now this may sound like it isn't for me but keep reading.

These last two weeks have been so busy there's been no time to do anything but the basics around the house even, so of course the bird feeders in our yard have been empty for 4 or 5 days. It turned warm a few weeks ago so I didn't think much of it. Overnight Monday we had a cold snap with some snow and the chickadees and blue jays started checking in for seed and peanuts. They'd sit in the tree outside the kitchen window for a minute or two chirping or squawking. You see, one of the feeders hangs from the railing outside the kitchen window and they're used to finding seed there.

So, on Wednesday before breakfast I took the time to refill that bird feeder and put peanuts on the railing. The hustle and bustle of the day seemed a little bit easier to take after that few minutes I had, watching the chickadees swoop in and out, the red polls jostle and flap for space on the perches, and the blue jays try to take peanuts without being seen!

There are no roses to smell in the garden right now but, to me, stopping to watch the birds is just as refreshing. I'm so glad I gave myself the time to do something I wanted to do. (Bonus! It didn't cost me a penny, we already had the sunflower seed and peanuts on the veranda!)

Yesterday I had a ton of housework to do as I had been out Christmas shopping most of Saturday and we went out Saturday night. But I was just feeling really tired (we got home late late late Friday night, I'm getting to be too old to do that LOL), so I took a couple hours just to chill out on the couch and play on the computer and watch Sex and The City episodes. I did end up doing some of the housework, but having that couple hours to just relax really re-energized me.

I did two things for myself this week...i bought nail polishes and nail care items and gave myself a manicure. Before I stopped caring about myself, I ALWAYS use to have my nails done. People would also comment on that to me. Secondly, I received a monetary gift and instead of immediately paying bills or using it for groceries, I bought myself a new coat, new boots and a new scarf. I have started accounts at a few online sites and they allow you to make WISHLISTS....i have been marking items I would like and putting them in my wish lists. So now I have a visual reminder of things that I would like for me. Usually I would think of things I want but with life being so hectic it was easy to forget them; when I would get the money I always had a physical bill laying around, reminding me to pay it. Now having the visual list of clothes I want helps me to focus on doing for me, putting a little time with excercise and food choices, and money into me because I am worth it.

Its a daily struggle but consistency not perfection will carry me to my goal....
Be careful of your thoughts, for your thoughts become your words.
Be careful of your words, for your words become your actions.
Be careful of your actions, for your actions become your habits.
Be careful of your habits, for your habits become your character.
Be careful of your character, for your character becomes your destiny."

LOL Knuckles, I love it! Buy yourself the Christmas present that you really want that you know no one else will get for you. Sometimes no matter how obviously I hint no one gets it! wrap it and put it under the tree from Santa :)

As an admitted only-child, I never found I've had a hard time rewarding myself with physical things. (Really, I wasn't a spoiled child... but other only-children know what I'm talking about!)

However, I do find that I don't take time for myself very often. So my "doing something nice for myself" goal is to remember to take "me time" each week... like taking extra time at the gym to use the sauna and whirlpool or spending time reading for pleasure. :)

I also buy myself new clothes that fit! :) (Now that I'm thinking, I need more of those!)
I often go out with friends for a cup of coffee and think that as part of something I do for myself beacause I love it!

By the way, I go to college and I attend a course called Art of Living. At the last lecture the lecturer asked whether we had done something for ourselves that day. And not many people could respond to that.

It is devestating to find out that so many of us don't do anything for themselves...

I bought myself flowers today! Just a little bouquet from the supermarket, but they look so pretty on the table and there was nothing behind them except that I liked them, I wanted them and now I have them. :-)

Been a long time since I bought something so frivolous, especially for myself. It felt really good and I smile every time I walk past them.

Winning!

Zombiecat's idea of trying something new is a good one! Today I took a class on cheese-making using a Groupon. I found it very interesting, and learned cheese is very easy to make, so I'm going to try it out soon here at home. We learned how to make mozzarella and ricotta, and they were both MILES better than the stuff you can buy at the store, and you know exactly what's in it when you make it yourself!

Try something new.

I decided to try participating in NaNoWriMo this year. I'm not a writer. I haven't written a story since high school and I may never complete an actual novel but it is kind of fun to see what comes out.

I agree with wearing nice clothes that fit too. I just recently bought some new shirts that are medium instead of large and I'm getting compliments more about how nice that outfit looks or "are you losing weight? good job". One thing I do every day at work is make sure I smile & say good morning to everyone I see. It just sets the tone for a good day and it really cheers other people up.

Pretend you're making tea for your great aunt Matilda, you remember, the aunt that you actually really like. And we're talking English tea here, a proper tea cup or pretty mug accompanied by a little tea sandwich and just a cookie or two.

Place the tea, delicious morsels, and a trashy romance (or rich fantasy) book on a tray or at the table (shove all the crap sitting on the table on a chair so you can't see it ;-). Turn on some nice gentle music.

Then sit down and, in your very best Aunt Matilda voice say, "oh sweetheart, this wonderful! Thank you so much - this is such a loving thing to do." Sip the tea, read the book, nibble at the snack. You so totally deserve to be treated well.

Great ideas so far!

I agree with getting clothes that fit properly. It makes me feel so much better about myself even if I am not a my goal.
I have a big waist but small hips (apple shape I think it is called) so clothes that fit my waist look baggy everywhere else. It really helped my frustration level and self esteem to just buy maternity pants that fit my hip measurement. These days they have jeans, pants and skirts that don't look different from non-maternity clothes.

Yes, complimenting myself can be hard at times when all I see is the things I'd like to change. Making time to do something I know I'm good at, especially if it's something I don't really have to do, can give me a sense of accomplishment that carries over into the things I'm struggling with.

So glad others mentioned wearing the colours you like - it seems everyone around here wears black or drab colours all the time and I love bright colours. I decided that I don't have to "fit in" and now I wear whatever makes me feel good.

Every once in a while, give yourself a little treat just for being you. No goal acheived, no special reason, just because you love yourself. Buy a book you wanted to read, take a mental health day off work to do whatever you want, get a new colour of nail polish - something frivolous just for you.

Living peacefully has its challenges.

I like everything FITTEREVERYDAY said.

My favorite nice things I do for myself are:
Go for a hike, alone or with a good friend. Getting outside can really make someone feel great.

Give myself compliments. This can be so hard when you're trying to lose weight and aren't where you want to be. I try to focus on how much I've accomplished and how amazing my body is for handling all the years I didn't take care of it.

Read a good book (good as in enjoyable for you). Read, listen to, or watch something funny, LAUGH. Make time for play even if you don't have children (or grandchildren). Listen to music. Dance like crazy...even if you can only chair dance it's fun. Do something just because you WANT to. Tell yourself nice things (do this more than once a week!!!). Give yourself credit.

I also suggest buying yourself clothes that fit and flatter you. Wear colors you like. Wear clothes that are just comfortable sometimes.

Time to stop trying to solve things with food (lack of included) that food won't solve. Food solves one thing: bodily hunger.

Along the lines of wear a cheerful color, mine is to wear clothes that make you feel good. I was hesitant at first to go out and buy clothes that fit me after I dropped down a size.... I figured, I won't wear them for very long since I plan on losing more, so why bother. But I started to feel like a slob wearing my too big clothes so finally I broke down and spent about $100 on a couple of pairs of jeans and a few tops that fit from Old Navy during a sale. I felt so much better about myself when I had stuff that properly fit.

Sometimes I think it is hard to think about doing something for ourselves. I thought it might be helpful to start a thread where we could list some nice things we could do for ourselves for inspiration.

Wear a cheerful color.
Take the scenic route.
Eat your favorite meal.
