Now that we're at the end of July, I took this fitness test again, with the ramp level at 6.

I was disappointed that my VO3 level number thingy was at 40.

I see that last time I took this fitness test, I scored a 43.

So I guess I have lost some fitness there or something...

The pre-set test on our machines at the gym is 5 min.There is no gradual increase of incline or resistance...it is just 5 min. at the preset incline and resistance

Well, it was bugging the crap out of me too! So at least we're alike in that way :-)

I'm not really a numbers person either. I can do some higher math but after a certain point, it's all mumbo-jumbo. My husband on the other hand IS a numbers person and it is just AMAZING to watch him figure out the odds or play cards (because he can keep track of what's been played)... oh my.

I found that I had the BEST results with the fitness test when I:

1. Stayed within the recommended strides per minute range (100-130).
2. Did not change the crossramp incline (stayed at 10).
3. Did not change the resistance but let the machine change it for me throughout the test.

All 3 times I've done it, it kept me at 19 minutes. Has anyone had a longer test time? A shorter test time?

I have an answer to the heart rate ratio / timing thing.

It's not a ratio. The elliptical is telling you how much time you spent in the appropriate heart rate zone, based on your age and weight (or maybe just age).

It's kind of interesting that you interpreted that as a ratio. Are you a numbers person? :-)

It was a pre-set test...I didn't raise or lower any of it..it did it itself, from the get go. I just pushed fitness test, entered my weight, age, gender and it started raising itself....right from the beginning. I will probably try it again, maybe in a couple of weeks. I tried to research it when I got home. I also thought of trying a different machine next time too.....If I can make it start low, then by all means I intend on that...unless it just over-rides me and does whatever its pre programmed to do from the beginning.....oh well. I'm feeling better now, but boy it was a blow to my fitness psyche, LOL

i think you set yourself up to fail. you want to set the machine to a comfortable crossramp, and low as in (1) resistance.

once the test starts, the machine automatically increases the resistance (but not the crossramp) and it gauges your VO2 max accordingly.

by setting a stiff resistance to begin with you had no where to go but down.

i suggest you try it again, let the machine set the resistance, just enjoy the ride.

you say you can outrun your kids. I found out yesterday i can too :) my 11 yr old took off at full speed (and she is F A S T), SURPRISINGLY i found myself saying "race" and even though she had a good 50' head start, i nailed it, and beat her by 5 feet. 1/4 block sprint.

i cant begin to explain what it does to my self worth (i'm 40) but even my kid is REALLY glad i'm not a vegetable anymore.

I tried the test today and wish i hadn't. It said my vo2 was 24, very poor....I think I'm in pretty good shape, I've lost 113 pounds, I've been working out cardio and lifting for the past month 5 days a week,(4 days a week for the past year) I take kick boxing classes, I can out run my kids (distance-wise) i can out-bike them....grrr. I took the test 2 x's because I just couldn't believe the first result was true... :(
I should add that the test was a pre-set 5 min. test with an incline of 5 and I didn't check the resistance, but it was pretty stiff...my avg. hr is 145-150 and my max is 170....

Well of course you can lol and yes i have switched to doing the manual intervals so i can go a longer time but at the same intervals as the weight loss program. Thanks for the help! emoticon

I have done the weight loss program in the past, but I don't any more because it's pre-programmed for 28 minutes, which I don't like. And the term "weight loss" is a joke. Do intervals if you want a weight loss program.

But now that you've mentioned it, I will probably have to do it just to see if I get a ratio too. Can it wait until the weekend? ;-) I'll do it then for sure :-)

no not the fitness test. i dont even know how to get to that. I go to a basic 24 hour gym. i will check the model. have you ever done the weight loss program on the elliptical. does yours have that option? the stats come up after you finish it.

Is this specifically for the fitness test program or for when you do any program? (Or do you only do the fitness test program on the elliptical (LOL)?)

I guess I need to be more aware of what's going on. The next time you're on the elliptical at the gym, take a look at the panel and see what the model number is. Could be that you belong to a fancy gym with more updated equipment than the basic gym I belong to.

(Please understand that when I moved 2 years ago, I really struggled with the decision as to which gym to join: the fancy one or the basic one. I went with the basic one, which I think, for me, was the right choice, but there are times when I wistfully wish I could have afforded the fancier gym...) (Oh well...)

im not sure what model it is. It is at the gym. No moving handlebars. When i complete my time i get a readout that shows max heart rate average heart rate and then the ratio thingy lol. it says target heart rate zone.

I did the fitness test again this past Saturday and got a VO3 reading of 43. It is essential that you stay within the 100-130 strides per minute range, it seems.

The Precors at my gym do not give the THR read-out in ratio. It tells me how many minutes I've been in the "cardio zone". I use the 546 without the moving handlebars. Which model are you using?

Because I have no idea what that ratio means. Hmm...
Do you have one of the home models? (i.e. not commercial but for home usage)

since you mentioned that I have a question. I use the precor elliptical and when you finish your program it gives you a number for target heart rate in ratio form (i.e. 6:30) does anyone know what this means?

OK, I did this again today, and I still ranked "HIGH". It still took me 19 minutes.

BUT -- this time, my VO3Max Rate was 40 instead of 43.

Let me see if i can find the info on the elliptical fitness test. If i find it, I'll post it.

you know I've had that same thought if i'm 10-15 mins in and another hrm interferes there goes the test.

but if your hands are always on, that is "supposed" to bypass the HRM signal.

sorry it failed you :(

i retested again as a 40yr old, and it stopped me for "high heart rate". My HR was 128! and just barely lit into the cardio area.

Maybe the same thing happened to me?

here's the funny part, my numbers were almost the same, I made it to 45/high when it did that.

Well, I've tried this on two different machines at the gym (thanks, Gutti!) and got "invalid test" and no score both times. Kept my hands on the HR whatsits (may have removed one very briefly to brush hair back or something) all the time; the first time I was wearing my own HRM, the second time not. Both times the test went on for about 20 minutes, did warm-up and cool-down; got up to level 13 yesterday during the test; carefully kept the pedaling between 100 and 130, at 110-120 most of the time. So I don't know what I might be doing wrong...maybe other people's HRMs in the area are making it go wonky?

i also am going to re-test maybe as a 30 yr old this time... 85% of a 40yr old max heart rate is plain stupid. I run on the treadmill @ 94% of max Hr for miles....(3 miles today)

i don't think it effected your total, since if it looses your heart rate too long it stops the test.

but if your like me you can always do it over. :)

besides 43 is a damn good number.

It took me 19 minutes in total.

The VOMax number was 43.

My fitness level was "high".

It told me to slow down twice.

My numbers might have been different had I not had to let go of the HRM handlebars for purposes of music selection on my Inno (XMRadio) for a few seconds. The HRM had a hard time picking up my heart beat/rate when I came back from fiddling around.

It was very VERY hard to stay within 100-130 strides per minute at resistance level 1. I think I got as high as resistance level 11.

I will try this again some time for a follow-up.

wow those are great numbers, congratulations!

I find the hardest part about the entire test is keeping the pace between 100-130, maybe i'll try it more on the high end see what it says.

I hope to get numbers like yours, but unfortunately 85% max heartrate for me (a 40 yr old) is 153, and when i work out, it's normally at 160-165. maybe i need to lie about my age and become a 30yr old for the test... what da ya think ?

The test took me 16 minutes including warm up and cool down. At the end it measured me at V02Max50 and fitness level high. It actually told me I had to slow down at certain times. emoticon

I think you need to keep your hands on the heart rate monitor section of the handlebars at all times. Otherwise, the machine can't measure your level of fitness.

Try it again, holding on the whole time, next time and let us know!

So, I tried the fitness test this morning and I don't know what happened. It started with the 3 minute warm up and then ten minutes in it said no fitness score. Are you supposed to keep your hands on the handles at all times? It gave no further instructions other than the warm up time and that after the warm up I had hit my target heart rate....what am I doing wrong? The one I use has the moveable arms so I do that too.

I'm still "getting acquainted" with my new elliptical. I love it.. which i NEVER thought I'd say about anything to do with exercise. Mine has lots of different programs, so far I just use manual and stride along for 30 minutes. I do find on mine the HRM runs 20 points higher than my HR with my Polar monitor, so I won't rely on my handles. I hope it has some kind of endurence test on there, this sounds like fun. I always LOVE to witness my own progress. Good for you Gutti!! When we first purchased our Bowflex last Aug.. I had trouble even getting situated on the thing and grabbing for the handles, I reflect back on that most days while i'm using it.. and give myself a little pat on the back for what I'v accomplished.. seeing our results, no matter how small, is a real motivator!!

when the fitness test starts it shows 30 minutes on the timer, and counts down. I've never gone the entire 30 mins w/o the machine ending the test early.

it usually ends for me when it gets to resistance 13-14 which with a 3 min warmup is about the 17 min mark.

i'm gonna do it again tomorrow. or tuesday. you're supposed to start "fresh" when your well rested, and i did it after running 3.5 miles. which probably elevated my heart rate too quickly.

the fitness test is nothing to be afraid of. you can just stop if you want. unless your in your early 20's I'm pretty sure the machine will end the test before the 30 minutes. It will end when your speed goes too low/high or your HR gets too high. If you're like me, i usually workout w/my heartrate higher then the machine stops at... today i was like... it's done? already? i wasn't even winded. (hence the reason i'm gonna do it again)

The first time i did the test i used the handlebars. so you do not neaed a hrm.

start peddling, and when it comes alive hit the performance button until it says fitness test. hit ok, it will ask age, weight, gender, and begin. Keep your eyes on the display, it gives directions during the test.

Would I need a heart rate monitor to do the fitness test? or would the HRM on the handlebars suffice? How did you do the test?

I have not done this test on the elliptical (yet). I don't know if i can, because I am healing an injured foot/knee. But I should probably give it a try.

The Precor Ellipticals (and most precor fitness machines) at my gym have a fitness test (under performance button) that after entering age / weight / gender will do a warm up, and slowly build resistance every minute (starting @ 1) until the test ends or your HR exceeds 85% max.

It then tells you VO2 max (oxygen intake), and your fitness level LOW/MED/HIGH

long story short has anybody else done this?

when i was 2 months new and thought I was awesome I did this test and was V02Max 34, fitness level medium, today I retook the test (after running 3.5 miles on the treadmill), and I had a V02 max 44 and fitness level high.

just a little more confirmation that i'm kicken butt!

anybody else do this and what numbers are you seeing ?
