I am going to pick up my dress tomorrow. We just set the date for Oct 2013. I've been engaged for well over a year but just went for my first shopping trip 2 weeks ago. I tried on 9 dresses and found THE dress. The bridal consultant offered me that I could purchase that dress (for significantly less than ordering it). Given that it was in perfect condition, and she assured me it could be altered down 3 sizes I took it. I think it will be nice to try it on now and then instead of having to wait until the last minute.

I am a big planner and so I needed my dress as early as possible! The way I'm dealing with weight loss is, I got a corset (lace-up) back. emoticon Corset backings have a lot of flexibility. If it does need to be taken in (in a year and two months in my case), then they can easily take it in from the sides. I tried on my dress and imagined a few inches gone... and it should still lace-up okay. Maggie Sottero and Christina Wu all have many dresses with corset backs. (My dress is by Moonlight. (You can also have a corset back put into a dress if your dream dress does not have it). My reception dress (Mori Lee, with corset) is going to take 15 weeks to come in. In general I think you should allow for 6 months however, because I've heard of dresses taking that long.

I bought my dress in 2011 and I'm getting married in 2013. As long as I can fit into it (I fit now, but can't breathe), I'll be okay and no alterations will be needed. But my dress is also very simple. I agree with the others - start looking early and the Bridal Dress Consultant will answer any questions regarding alterations. emoticon

I agree with the ladies below. Also you should factor in how ornate your dress is and if you're doing any customization. The dresses I'm considering (I have 4 contenders lol) will take about 9-10 months for total completion because of the level of beading and lace work. In addition I'm having buttons added down the back of the dress.

All the best to you as you look for your dress! emoticon

It will depend on where you get it from and whether you have to order it. Some places, you have to order your dress 6 months ahead of time and then it takes 2-3 months to do alterations. This is why they usually recommend buying your dress 9 months out. My own experience was buying it from David's Bridal, taking it home the same day, and then it sitting in my closet until 2 months before the wedding when I took it back to David's Bridal for alterations (raising the hem, shortening the straps, and adding a bustle), and it was ready in 3 weeks, with no additional alterations needed. I recommend giving yourself time though. At least pick out your dress early so you can find out if it needs to be ordered. Your timeline is all about the dress you pick out.

Does anyone know what the general timeline is for ordering your wedding dress and making alterations? How far in advance do you need to pick a dress for the order and alterations not to cost a fortune in rush ordering?
Thanks everyone!
