I contacted my friend who has been posting pictures of the Great Gray Owl. At first he was hesitant of telling me where.. Must have felt guilty because he called me late last night and gave good directions of where he has been seeing it. I wake up several times in the night with anticipation because of this new information. Up at six am - I am out the door just before seven and on the trail by 0710 hr hours. I walk with much hope building and failing as I begin to think I won't see it. I turn my head and there it is... I get two quick pictures before it flies away.. I am so pleased, so full of joy.... I seen it, that is all I needed and a picture as proof.
Later in the morning when walking with my wife we seen it again and Once again I was able to quickly snap a few more photos. I am a happy happy camper...

Out the door to drive to the Estuary.. I have heard reports that a Great Grey Owl has been spotted in the area. People are being careful not to mention the exact spot.. So I went hiking at dusk last night two trails and then this morning I went out again and rehiked the two and another one. The last trail looked more promising with many ever green trees. No luck..
Nevertheless I enjoyed the hike.
It is a strange feeling last night walking in the woods in darkness. Oh the thoughts of bears, cougars, wolves and other things that go bump in the night..... That entered my mind..
Then I began thinking about the people who are about to through hike the PCT trail or the Appalachian trail. Months of wandering in the wilds - that would be scary..

Spent several hours walking and sitting in Vancouver. Chinese New Year parade brought us to the big city and then we walked around afterwards looking and investigating different markets. Who needs to travel thousands of miles to get a taste of China when it is right in your backyard. On the other hand... This is only a taste of the real thing thousands of miles away - just wetting the appetite - a tease. Hmmmm I wonder if a future vacation to China should be in the making or not.

13 February .. The Great Backyard Bird Count has begun.
So since I am supposed to go count birds I need to see them..
I began counting from my Condo armchair
4 Stellar Jays, 2 Black capped Chickadees, 5 Darkeyed Juncos, 1 Song Sparrow, 5 House Finches, 4 Chestnut backed Chickadees

Then when I walked the Dalhouise I observed - 1 Northern Flicker, 2 Spotted Towhees,
9 Mallard Ducks, 1 Common Merganser, 5 Bald Eagles, 18 Canada Geese

Then I returned home ate lunch, became bored watching TV so I went out again to visit the estuary, hoping to see more birds.
I seen - 21 Common Mergansers, 9 Buffleheads, 1 Double Crested Cormorant, 5 Mallard Ducks, 1 Great Blue Heron, 7 Canada Geese, 8 Chestnut backed Chickadees, 2 Golden crown Kinglets - and on the way home my old friend the Northern Pygmy Owl was waiting by the side of the road perched in his tree branches looking for something to eat.
Not bad for day one...

Besides all that I hung up,at the Condo a humming bird feeder and a Niger seed sock feeder ... Let's see if any new birds come to check it out..

I just came home from the public library 2000 hr hours.. At 1800 hr hours was the start of a talk of a man who has cycled five continents. I was impressed with his slide presentation. He talked constantly ... My butt became a little restless, but nevertheless it was a good talk. I went to his Facebook page when I came home .. Garth Rides for hope
I am encouraged to get out on my bike more..

Cabin Fever... Finally this depressing winter time feeling is upon my wife and I. We have a vacation planned for the first week of April but that is a long time away.
We are sitting in our chairs bored.. TV is boring, Noni is getting bored watching her YouTube videos on baking.. I get out for walks but I don't stay out all day.. Maybe I ought to stay out longer... But that is selfish.. Noni is at home bored...
Camp our employment start up date is mid April ... Then we will be longing for time off...
Our funds are low right now.. Otherwise I would plan a Road Trip. .. Might go on one regardless because we are bored.

Swish swash went my shoes in the muck. Every step my feet swish swash along in a very wet muddy trail. So much for keeping my new shoes nice and clean. But I don't care - I am throughly enjoying my walk in the rain.

The rain is falling, I am drained of all energy and I am sitting comfortably in my cozy chair watching birds come and go at my feeders drinking a hot cup of coffee - life isn't so bad I was thinking to myself... Then along came Dalhouise....

I took Dalhouise for his walk around 0930 for 65 minutes at the pond in the rain.. I must had been funny looking with camera and binoculars hanging around my neck with a Hugh bright umbrella keeping the steady rain off of me -- and my Dalhouise in his bright red rain coat on as well.. Anyways I recorded in my field note book ..
A Great Blue Heron, a Belted Kingfisher, two American Dippers, a flock of Mallards ducks about six of them, two Hooded Mergansers and two immature Common Goldeneyes ..
I heard a Bald Eagle but could not spot it ..

I wore my older shoes because it was so wet.. My feet hurt again so now I know I must throw them away.. My new ones might be ok for awhile - but they are heavy I am finding out.. But yesterday my feet did not hurt when I wore them most of the day.

I checked out a link on the web that was dedicated to identify birds and bird song. I listened to several bird songs and my dog went crazy. First time I played it he was sleeping on the footstool and he sat up and stepped on me to see where the sound was coming from - so I played it again and he stuck his nose next to the speakers of my IPad.
A few times doing this he hops on the floor and looks under my chair ... Then I stopped - it is too early to tease Dalhouise

Coming from Ontario - I agree seeing the first Robins always to me meant that Spring was not far behind.. Here in BC this does not hold the same truth as I think we are in forever Spring.
However to see more and more lately indicates that Spring is basically upon us.

The weekend is over. It is Groundhog Day. I woke up and I am alive so it is a good day.
I have a warm home, a full stomach and more than enough clothing to choose from to wear.
I have had my coffee and my dog is laying at my feet. To add the cherry on top of my cake my wife is preparing breakfast.. Man life is good this day.

It was a sucessful day. We ate at our favorite restaurant but only order the small portion instead of the large one which we normally do. We had good times chatting and visiting with our friends. One friend even help set up and teach me things about the iPad and cell phone I had no idea about.. I seen an American Wigeon in a pond at the side of the road that I got a photo of. And I found a geocache... A good day...yesterday.
Today 31 January
Went outside to walk Dalhouise and seen an American Robin near the entrance door.
We continued to hike around the " Pond" where I heard an Bald Eagle but could not spot it. I think it is on the other side of the highway. But I did see a Crow, Great Blue Heron, a Belted Kingfisher, an American Dipper. And a pair of Common Mergansers, ( F/M)
Walk was from 1005 to 1145

The plan today is to drive to Surrey / Cloverdale to visit a couple of friends and to eat at our favourite fish and chip restaurant Salty's. I have loaded new geocaches into my hand held GPS. I don't have much confidence that I will actually find any but I am hopeful. I think we will bring the Dalhouise dog with us today...

Oh what a day it was.. I am so thankful I moved from Ontario to BC. We - my wife and I went on a hike, my blog says it all.. But to post on my team page I will limit and reshare.
A two hour hike became a five hour hike ending in sore feet and physical exhaustion but feeling good.
Why am I so thankful - I don't remember too many hikes in a light sweater nor picnics in January along any unfrozen snow covered lakes.
How did a two hour hike become a five hour hike... I blame it on geocaching..

The day ended with my wife holding hands, and still talking to me.. That makes for a good day in my books

Bird sightings 28 January
Condo feeder....
0748 One Song Sparrow
0759. Three stellar Jays
- nothing else came so at 0830 to 0915 I walked Dalhouise around the "pond"
Seen..
Bald Eagles 2
Mallard Ducks 4
American Dipper 1
Great Blue Heron 1
Belted Kingfisher 1

Then it was time to drive to Burnaby Lake and feed the birds there - I have not yet made a list of these.. I need to look at my photos and identify correctly
But there are many to add to my days listing in my field notebook

Just to name a few birds -
Buffleheads ducks, Mallard Ducks, Green wing teals, Common Merganser, Hooded Merganser, Greater Scaup, Red Wing Blackbirds, Black-cap Chickadee, Dark-eyed Junco's and Rock Pigeons.

This morning it looked overcast, grey, not so inviting to go out hiking.. So made the decision not to hike the 10 km trail around Burnaby Lake. Maybe tomorrow, Noni wants to come too.. But we will leave the Dalhouise home.. That is the plan ...
So today it was a walk to Willow Park, and around the bloc, with Dalhousie who seems to be still suffering from yesterday's long walk. After the walk leaving Dalhouise home - it was Noni and my first swim of the year in the local swimming pool. Now my arms are a little sore but I do notice ... I seem to have a spring in my step - I have more energy each day... I don't have this at the end of the day.. It is exhaustion by the time I get in bed and fall asleep when my head hits the pillow

BACKYARD NATURE HOME | PLANTS | ANIMALS | FUNGI | ECOLOGY | GEOLOGY | GARDENING | TOOLS

KEEPING NATURE NOTES:
YOUR NATURE JOURNAL
Let me show you something...
I've just risen from my computer, walked across the room to my library, and taken out an old, black, vinyl-covered, three-inch-thick, three-ringed binder from way back in my school days. It must contain a thousand pages of loose-leaf binder paper of the kind highschool students use. Groups of pages are separated by stiff boards with colorful plastic tabs attached. The green tab reads "ferns," the yellow one "insects," and the blue one "RR weeds." This latter topic reflects a special interest I had years ago when I lived in St. Louis and loved to walk along railroad tracks looking for exotic weeds.

I randomly open the notebook, find myself in the red-tabbed "birds" section, and now I type what's on that page so you can see:

April 18, 1976
(Easter Sunday) Kentucky: McLean County;bushy, weedy area around bridge over Cypress Creek on Knobbs/Semiway road 1 mile E of Semiway; 70, light breeze, clear, from 6:30 to 8:30 AM
1: Mourning Dove
2: Red-bellied Woodpecker
3: Purple Martin
4: Blue Jay
5: Crow
6: Tufted Titmouse
7: Carolina Chickadee
8: Carolina Wren
9: Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
10: White-eyed Vireo
11: Black-throated Green Warbler
12: Hooded Warbler
13: Myrtle Warbler
14: Yellow-throated Warbler
15: Yellowthroat
16: House Sparrow
17: Cardinal
18: Goldfinch
19: Rufous-sided Towhee
20: White-throated Sparrow

My first sensation upon looking over this list is that it's really neat knowing exactly where I was on Easter Sunday morning way back on April 18th, 1976. I was visiting my parents on the farm in Kentucky. I can visualize that early that morning, perhaps even before my parents presented my Easter basket -- a tradition continued far into my adulthood -- I entered my old Volkswagen Beetle and drove to Cypress Creek a couple of miles away. If I think hard, perhaps imagining more than remembering, I can even remember that early-spring morning, the fresh, pale green leaves unfurling on trees, the odor of moist earth from still-unplowed soybean fields along the creek...

In short, this sheet of paper is a souvenir of a time past. It evokes memories of a life and way of being that exist no more. It feels good to remember those Easter baskets, and driving in the old Volkswagen down the gravel road to Cypress Creek, as the cold air gushed through the rusted-out spot below my feet... And it's even good to see which birds I saw that day.

To tell the truth, the list itself isn't a very spectacular one. Not a single species on it can be considered rare or out of the ordinary. These are exactly the birds to be expected along a bushy, weedy creek bank in mid April, in my part of Kentucky.

However, it's also true that what I now know very largely results from my having compiled hundreds of lists similar to this one. In 1976, I was just learning which migrants arrived first. Once I'd amassed several years of lists, gradually the impressions began dawning: Yes, Black-throated Green and Hooded Warblers, and Yellowthroats, they're the "early birds," the migrating species arriving first during spring migration. If today I'd read that on that Easter Sunday I'd seen a Blue-winged Warbler -- which now I know to be a late arriver -- I'd be sure I'd made a misidentification back in 1976.

In other words, my nature study notes have always been, and continue to be, a real "tool" I use as my insights into nature keep growing, evolving, and branching into new fields of interest. It can be the same way for you...

Now I continue thumbing through my notebooks' bird section. I remind myself that by no means have my birding experiences been limited to weedy creek banks near my childhood home. Many of my lists are souvenirs of exotic places. I've birded in over forty countries, and I have lists from them all.

Ah, here's the list from the time I saw my first Chaffinch, spotted downtown near the University of Santiago de Compestela, Spain, back in 1980, during a visit with my friend Sergio. And here's a good sighting of the Gray-collard Becard, seen in southern Mexico near a town with the jaw-breaking name of Ocozocoautla, and here's the wild peacock seen next to that Hindu temple, in India, in 1996...

Therefore, for me, there are three main reasons for keeping nature study notes:

They are "tools" that help me learn
Rummaging through them evokes great memories of being in the field and doing and seeing interesting things
It's a lot of fun to show your lists to others, as I just did...
Of course, nowadays I keep my notes on the computer (and back them up fastidiously!) You might be interested in the computer-friendly ideas for organizing your notes on our Note Organization Page.

When you get some solid identifications of plants and animals in your Notebook, be sure to consider posting your IDs at the wonderful iNaturalist.Org website.

I am often - well to be correct I do most of my activities outside. I see so many things that I would like to remember but I have the shortest memory in the world and so I have begun to attempt to write notes in a field notebook. I am not so observant or clear as to what to write. I think it would be a real good idea especially if done correct and during the winter I look back on summer notes or even years later to review them and to be taken back to the time written .
Also I think it would improve my observational skills.
As I keep doing my recordings I think I am getting better at including times, conditions of environment. I don't always include temperature which I want to

Do any of you relate to this?

Heavy - heavy rain - raining dogs and cats .. It was so heavy I did as little walking outside today as possible. I took out the Dalhouise for a short time - later I took him to the beach and opend the car door and let him run.. He runs down the beach path while I drive on the road..
Lazy me... But it is raining so friging heavy.

I was away for 2 weeks, just long enough to really get off track. Family, friends and celebrations make it difficult to keep making the healthy choices and to maintain normal routines. I'm determined to use the experience to stay on track through the holidays

Thank-you, I am trying. I am trying to be brutally honest about my food intake and I don't count all the minutes all the time on my exercise. That way I have a little wiggle room. I know one thing that really adds up the calories is the oil, butter, salad dressing, it amazes me how many calories I used to consume just in those things.
But I like spark because it helps me track my calories a lot easier than looking up everything, and also my exercise. And its good to have other people in the same boat as I am.
Well have a good evening everyone.

Easter Sunday weight 194.4 lbs. I have been going up and down in weight. Start weight on 12/30/12 was 195.8 but got up to 198.8 on 3/17/13 and 196.6 on 3/24/13.

I am tracking food on the SP nutrition tracker, exercising 3 days per week at the Doctor's office gym with volunteer fitness trainer and using SP exercise videos on 4 days of the week.

I am tired of the depressing life I have been living so getting out of the funk with good eating and exercise. I also see therapist 1 time per week.

Marilyn

I have "The Spark", "SparkPeople Cookbook" and "Spark Solutions"

I set my ticker to my highest weight of 210 lbs because it gets upset and doesn't want to save when I gain weight instead of lose.
on Dec 30, 2012 I joined SparkPeople and weighed 195.8

emoticon Good job on the weight loss. I also have a really hard time stopping at one, if they are fresh its really hard. So great job stopping at one.
I lost some weight this week also, I have been in a slump on exercise this last couple of days. My calories have been ok, I just need to kick it up a notch and get moving, it has been colder outside so I haven't wanted to go ride my bike or do yard work. I think I will invest in a stationary bike yet again! I have bought and sold or given away so darn much exercise equipment, that's why I refuse to join a gym, it is a waste of money for me because I go for a month or two and then not at all. Oh well one step at a time. One day at a time. BUT I WANT IT ALL NOW emoticon
Have a good day

Lynn - emoticon on the weight loss! Don't think one chocolate chip cookie is that big a deal. Me, on the other hand, has a hard time stopping at one. LOL

Really long day at work today - very tired (didn't have a good night sleep) tried to stick to my healthy eating, but caved even after giving it 15 mins - worked the first time, but the temptation got the best of me....I can never resist a chocolate chip cookie! Even did a workout when I got home from work after dragging at work - got my second wind. Good news I finally broke that 12 lb mark emoticon weigh in this morning and lost 1.3 lbs!

krys... I did a little exercise and I was tired at bedtime bu sore so that kept me up some, I am tired again tonight, maybe I just need more sleep. I get 7-8 hours but maybe not getting restful sleep, I will have to ask the Dr. about it if it keeps up.
Slapoutkid...I hope you get it figured out with your husband, maybe if you try some healthy recipes that are really tasty he will come around.
Well have a good evening

SLAPOUTKID - I agree that you are committing to a lifestyle change not a diet. You might try the meal planner and work around foods he will eat. I sent a link in the email this morning.

MOTELMOM - you did well with that cardio! Don't exercise too late in the evening; it might keep you awake longer than you want!

Slap.. don't say you are on a diet, say you are changing your eating for life. I had to laugh when you said you were going in for your mammogram, there is an add running around here called squeezing for a reason, its for mammograms. They are going to throw a party and everything. It would have to be one heck of a party for me to go unless of course it was time for my mammogram.

No I never did figure it out Ray I think its just part of old age, you have to catch those thoughts fast, they like to run away.
Well I got up early this morning and did 10 min. of cardio, but now at 6:30 I am ready for bed, maybe I will do some more exercise to wake me up
Well off to find something to do, take care. emoticon

Hello Everyone!
I have been off and on Spark People for a few years, never seriously though. I hope to visit everyday. I find lots of good ideas and articles here. My problem with eating healthy is my hubby. He just about refuses to eat anything he thinks is "diet food". So when I say anything about losing weight he becomes very suspicious and won't eat anything he thinks falls under diet food even if he always ate it before. Anyway I am going to renew my efforts to eat healthier and exercise. Thanks for all the good tips! Gotta go now...time for my yearly mammogram.

Its always nice to have company, but sometimes its also nice when they go home lol.

Beautiful day here today, got a small bike ride in, and some yard work, my calories for lunch were high, I ate 3 tyson chicken bites thinking it wouldn't be to bad but they are high in calories, I should have looked before eating them. So I will be on the high end of my calorie scale today.
Once I recover from the yard work i will try to get more exercise in.
I know there is something else I was going to do but for the life of me i can't think of what is is.
Well have a wonderful rest of the day

Took our visitors (sil & her hubby) to a craft bazaar and then shopping at the mall. We had a good day! They leave in the morning; so I should be able to catch up better tomorrow.

Great job losing 2.8 lbs. emoticon i gained some of the weight you lost, you can have it back. emoticon
My biggest problem is evening eating when I sit down to watch tv and unwind for the night. I actually have been eating fairly light at breakfast just so I can have extra calories at night. I am going to work on not doing this at least 2 nights this week. So that is my goal no eating while watching tv 2 nights this week.
And I have lied to myself about how much exercise I am getting so I am going to work on being more accountable about my exercise.
I enjoy veggies and fruit more now that I am trying to eat them. Junk food has way to many calories for what I am allowed, so I have to be very selective about what and how much I eat of that.
Well have a good afternoon.

I lost 2.8 lbs this week. I exercised Monday 1 hour and Thursday 30 minutes at the doctors office fitness room. I was going to go on Tuesday but they closed because of the snow storm. I also caught a cold so Thursday was sick but still went and did 30 minutes. I was still sick on Friday so did not work. Did work yesterday 3p-11p. I stood up for part of my shift. Because I was sick I was not able to eat like I normally do so that helped.
This week I am going to try to only eat when my stomach says I am hungry and only eat a small amount at a time. I am going to stop obsessing over what I eat and how many calories. Nothing will be off limits. I just have to be sure I am truly hungry before I eat anything and then measure the amount. I hope this will help me get over the cravings and will want to eat more healthy. The more I tried to watch the calories and what I was eating the more I ate. I am not a big fan of veggies and fruit but I can eat them. If I stop obsessing about substituting veggies for junk and just eat what I want when I am truly hungry maybe I will naturally eat more veggies. I will be buying more veggies tomorrow. I am also going to try to buy less junk to have around. My biggest problem is that junk food is grab and go but veggies require preparing unless all I eat is carrots and celery No more food ( except fruit- so kids don't eat it) in the bedroom. If I want to eat anything I will have to go downstairs to get it. I just have to make sure anything I buy to eat is veggies because the kids will not eat those. They eat fruit and meat. The only veggies they eat is corn and white potatoes.

yes its been in the high 40's and no wind some days, In this state high 40's is almost summer, lol, today it was a bit windy and the wind was cold so I did some walking and some yard work for exercise instead of a bike ride.
i just got done with meds for a sinus infection so I know how you feel, I have a steriod nasal spray, i hope that doesn't make me gain weight, I know I was starving the whole time I was on meds, I was trying to not go over my alloted calories but it was hard, the hardest since I started, this week has been a bit better.

I like how you phrased that - think I'll steal that 'sloppy' idea! LOL My meds are working for the sinus infection, but because it includes steroids, I know weight gain is on its way! UGH!!

How is everyone, are you staying on track? Mine track is a little sloppy at times but I am still pointing in the right direction, the weather is getting better so I can ride my bike that will help with my exercise.
Otherwise life is good.

I broke down and went and got antibiotics, my crud was just moving back and forth between my sinuses and chest. I already feel better after only a couple of days, I hate being sick.
But now that I am feeling better I am alot more hungry, will have to watch myself close now.
Hope everyone has a great weekend, the sun is shinning and for this time of year it is beautiful today.

ye I got sick on Friday, and I have been taking everything under the sun to try to shorten the cold, but still feel lousy. My calorie control has been better this week, my exercise, so, so. My husband bought me a podometer for my b-day, and I swear it must be wrong it says I walked 16000 steps yesterday. i had a busy morning but that is kind of crazy.

Hope everyone is mending and getting over all the crud going around.

At the top of this page is an orange tab called MY TRACKERS - click on that. The first item is START - click on that. In the top left hand corner, under WELCOME, is a link called: Account / E-Mail Preferences - click on that. There are 3 tabs, the last is called COMMUNITY - click on that. There are a bunch of green buttons, the last one says: SIGNATURE AND TICKER - click on that. Pick the one you want, scroll down and pick the icon, etc. you want. Signature is down there too.

Hope this helps!
