I have no idea why I should know this as I can't find it in any of our shops

What is Acai?
A berry from Brazil
Acai (pronounced ah-sigh-EE) is a berry from Brazil that's been widely touted in the United States for its health-enhancing powers. In addition to removing toxins and increasing energy, the alleged benefits include burning fat, reducing food cravings, and boosting metabolism. Typically the berry is sold in the form of juice (for as much as $40 a bottle), capsules, or powder. What supposedly makes acai berries so beneficial is their high levels of antioxidants, which help fight harmful free radicals

Riboflavin is another name for which vitamin?
Vitamin B-2
Riboflavin (vitamin B-2) is involved in several vital metabolic processes in the body. It is necessary for normal cell and tissue function. Riboflavin is needed for normal protein and energy metabolism

One of the trouble with this quest is that there appears more than on answer but B2 is what they are looking for.

This one is one of the true trivial questions: About ____% of the calories you consume post-workout should come from fat. The "right" answer is 15%
I swear it said how much protein should eat. My eyes are playing tricks on me! I said 25% thinking protein and got it wrong.

Not a hard question but as I did not understand it I looked it up.
It seems from what others say both answers are right. This did not ring true but Coach Jen said that false is the right answer. but as some had put this and got it wrong I decided not to answer it and move on.

The question :

True or False: The ''Freshman 15'' is a myth.

Questions like this drive me crazy. It could be my my math background that makes me so black and white but this question and answer drive me nuts! How many nutrients are lost when whole grains are refined into white flour? 17

The explanation says During this process, grains become less nutritious, losing 25% of their original protein content and 17 other essential nutrients. Since it says 17 other doesn't that mean 18 nutrients. I got it right since I'm on to them already but really ...

__ GRAMS of sugar listed on a nutrition label is equal to 1 teaspoon of sugar.
4 grams
Next time you're reading a nutrition facts label, do this math to find out just how much added sugar that food really contains! Every 4 grams of "sugars" listed on a food label equals one teaspoon of sugar.

True or False: After a hard workout, you should see weight loss almost immediately.
False

Oh yes here is another on of those questions

Cutting calories today (through diet and exercise) will not necessarily show up on the scale at the end of the day or even by tomorrow. Your weight can fluctuate from day-to-day for reasons that have nothing to do with your diet and exercise program. Much of this fluctuation is due to water and food intake. While your scale may show changes throughout the day, fluctuations that could be due to food & water alone are not permanent weight losses or gains. Weighing yourself immediately after wearing a "sweat" suit, getting into a sauna, or finishing an intense workout might (or might not) show a loss on the scale. But that is temporary water loss that will come back after you re-hydrate yourself by drinking. Remember—you’re trying to lose fat, not simply "weight" or water weight

What does 'isometric' mean?
Same length

I was lucky with this one

But it was confusing when I found the right answer.

Isometric means "same length." This is a high-intensity contraction of the muscle with no change in the length of the muscle. In other words, your muscles are working hard but the muscle itself remains static. Isometric exercises are good for variety and some strength maintenance, but they don’t challenge your body enough to build much strength

How many cups of popcorn does a large tub from a movie theatre usually contain?
20 cups
I missed this one saying 10. But what is a cup and how big is it 500mls 250mls ???

On average, a large popcorn (which contains 20 cups) boasts a mind-boggling 100 grams of fat—the equivalent of more than six fast food hamburgers. With about 1,300 calories, that large popcorn packs almost a full day’s supply of calories for the average dieter.

Individuals who do not absorb vitamin B-12 properly might have what condition?

Pernicious anemia

A lack of vitamin B-12 may lead to anemia, fatigue, nerve damage, stomach problems, a smooth tongue, or very sensitive skin. Some people have a medical problem called pernicious anemia in which vitamin B-12 is not absorbed from the intestines properly. They are missing a body chemical called intrinsic factor that comes from the stomach lining. Others have a diseased intestine or have had a large part of their stomachs or intestines removed. These conditions require treatment with vitamin B-12 injections.

Which item is the lowest-calorie dessert at the golden arches?
McDonald's Kiddie Cone
Who what where are golden arches

All in all, both of these options can fit into a healthy diet. Surprisingly, the Kiddie Cone is one of the lowest calorie items on the entire menu, at only 45 calories and 1 gram of fat. It will satisfy your sweet tooth and help you keep your portions in control. Unfortunately, the 35-calorie Apple Dippers come with a 70-calorie caramel dipping sauce. Still, they make a good choice for only 105 calories and half a gram of fat--and an even better choice if you don't eat the dipping sauce at all. If you have a few more calories to spend on your sweet tooth, consider ordering the larger Vanilla Reduced-Fat Ice Cream Cone. It's more than 3 times the serving size of the Kiddie one, but still low in calories (150) and fat (3.5).

I got this right but there is more than one answer

A potassium deficiency can lead to...
High blood pressure
On average, the potassium intake in the United States is well below the recommended intake level. This may be a contributing factor in high blood pressure. Also, with prolonged diarrhea, vomiting, or laxative use, a potassium deficiency may occur. Kidney problems may also cause severe loss. A deficiency will result in the following symptoms: weakness, appetite loss, nausea, and fatigue.

False

A tricky one this

The term "whole grain" is used in lots of food ads, and on the front of food packages, from bread to crackers to cereals. But whole grain is NOT the same thing as whole wheat

n order to lower your triglyceride numbers, you need to lose:
7-10% of your body weight
Since your body releases triglycerides into the bloodstream from your stored fat, the less fat you have available, the lower your triglycerides will be. You don't have to lose a lot of weight to see a benefit either. Losing just 7-10% of your body weight (just 14-20 pounds for a 200-pound person) can make a difference in your triglycerides—and for your heart!

Not so much hard but to remember which type is which

For optimum health, you want your HDL cholesterol to be...
High (greater than 60 mg/dL)

HDL (High Density Lipoprotein) is the good, healthy cholesterol. HDL picks up and carries excess cholesterol away from artery walls and brings it back to the liver for processing and removal. You want this number to be high (at least 60 mg/dL)to protect your heart. Levels too low (less than 40 mg/dL) are bad for your health, increasing your risk for heart disease. Click here to learn about other important cholesterol numbers, like LDL and triglycerides.

There is another question just like this, so don't mix the answers up

Who is more likely to develop high blood pressure?

It depends on the person's age

Your risk of developing high blood pressure increases as you age. Men over 45 and women over 55 are more likely to have high blood pressure than their younger counterparts. Up to age 55, men are more prone to high blood pressure than women, but after menopause, a woman's risk increases. By age 75, high blood pressure is more prevalent among women than men.

Which conventionally grown vegetable tends to be HIGHEST in pesticide residue?
Celery
I was wrong by putting bell peppers
Here's the "dirty dozen"--the list of the 12 most contaminated fruits and vegetables, listed in descending order, starting with greatest levels pesticide contamination): apples, celery, strawberries, peaches, spinach, nectarines (imported), grapes (imported), sweet bell peppers, potatoes, blueberries (domestic), lettuce and kale / collard greens.

There must be two question on this as the last one I answered was Bell peppers. I know there is on on fruit who's answer is raspberries.

Beta-carotene is a form of which vitamin?
Vitamin A
Your body can get vitamin A in two forms: retinols and beta-carotene. Retinols are found in foods that come from animals such as meat, milk fortified with A, fish oil and eggs. Bete-carotene is found in red, yellow, and orange vegetables and fruits, and many dark-green leafy vegetables.

False
The average American licks her way through almost 5 gallons of the ice cream each year, according to the Canadian Dairy Info Centre, but New Zealanders, at 6 gallons a year, eat more!

Not so much hard but there are two answers

1)What is systolic blood pressure?
Both A and C
Got it wrong

Blood pressure, the force of blood against artery walls, is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) and recorded as two numbers: systolic (pressure on the arterial walls as the heart contracts) over diastolic (pressure on the arterial walls as the heart relaxes between beats). Both numbers are important.

3 Individuals who do not absorb vitamin B-12 properly might have what condition?
Pernicious anemia
A lack of vitamin B-12 may lead to anemia, fatigue, nerve damage, stomach problems, a smooth tongue, or very sensitive skin. Some people have a medical problem called pernicious anemia in which vitamin B-12 is not absorbed from the intestines properly. They are missing a body chemical called intrinsic factor that comes from the stomach lining. Others have a diseased intestine or have had a large part of their stomachs or intestines removed. These conditions require treatment with vitamin B-12 injections.

True or False: To lose body fat, it doesn’t matter what you eat as long as you stay within your calorie range. The answer to this one is False according to the trivia folks.

I just finished reading 8 things you always wanted to know about dieting by and it clearly states "While eliminating "non-essential" foods like soda, sugar, sweets and the like can help you lose weight and enhance your health, people lose and maintain weight loss and improve their health simply by cutting back on these foods rather than eliminating them entirely." I think this is a contradiction.

True or False: Vitamin C is only found in fruits.

The answer is false. If you know that the best source of vitamin C is in fruits you have to be sure to read the question carefully and remember that veggies have them too.
I have been thinking of fruits as freggies lately kind of all is the same breath since we make fruit salad that has veggies and vice versa. The best sources of vitamin C include citrus fruits (oranges, grapefruits, tangerines), strawberries, peppers, kiwi, and cantaloupe. Good sources include some green-leafy vegetables, cauliflower, tomatoes, potatoes, and pineapple.

For best results, how long should you hold a stretch? The trivia answer says Research indicates that for optimal benefits you should hold the stretch for 30-60 but other artivcles say 60 - 90 seconds or Research into the subject has shown variable results which depend on age. It surely isn't etched in stone.

An HDL ("good" cholesterol) level of __________has been linked to lower disease risks and protection against heart disease for both men and women.

The right answer is 60 mg per dL

The trivia explanation says According to the American Heart Association, men should aim for HDL levels of 40 mg/dL or greater, and women should aim higher than 50 mg/dL. Levels of 60 mg/dL or more for both genders have been linked to lower disease risks and protection against heart disease.

I have mine measured every year and my doctor only talks about 50 mg/dL for me.. I have never heard of a goal for 60 from anyplace else besides SparkPeople.

True or False: You should always avoid exercise when you have a cold. Trivia answer False

Trivia explanation: If the cold is primarily in your head, it's okay to exercise, just at a lower intensity (provided you feel okay and have enough energy). Once you are feeling 100% again, then you can slowly increase your activity back to your pre-illness level. If your cold is below the neck (in your chest), try to refrain from activity until it clears up. The best thing you can do for your body when it's trying to fight a bug is to give it rest.

Tricky question

Today there was a trivia item about Vegans and B-12 supplements. The correct answer according to trivia is true. However, in sparkpeople article it states:
To ensure you get enough B-12, select eggs and dairy products daily. For those who don't eat eggs or dairy, look for vitamin B-12 in fortified vegan cheese, yogurt, and non-dairy drinks; fortified cereals; fortified veggie burgers and faux meats; and nutritional yeast. Based on personal choice, one of these recommended plans should be used to ensure adequate vitamin B-12 intake.

This leads you to believe that there are many sources of B-12 that are available for vegans without resorting to supplements,

I hate when they expect us to know the better calorie count for two salads that are 50 calories apart and neither is a good choice for lunch. To me the best answer is neither

I like this thread!

Sorry I haven't been around much. I just completed my summer term where I was working 6 days a week and didn't have much time for anything. Except for this coming weekend (when I am going away with my husband and will have no internet access) I should be back pretty regularly.

The blood pressure-lowering benefits of exercise can be observed how soon after starting a workout program? Within hours

Looking at the explanation this one was pretty tricky. Most studies on this refer to the permanent changes to blood pressure which takes a few months of consistent exercise to see. It is unlikely that lowering your blood pressure for a few hours can truly impact your health. "Within 3 months" was one of the potential answers and probably a better answer to the question.

According to the American College of Sports Medicine, the blood pressure lowering effects of exercise can be observed as soon as one to three hours after a single 30- 45 minute workout! This response can linger for up to nine hours post-exercise. Permanent blood pressure changes can be seen as early as three weeks to three months after beginning an exercise program.
