Can food labels that list "0" trans fats actual contain some trans fats?
Yes emoticon

Any food that lists "hydrogenated oil" on the ingredients list does contain trans fats, even if the label says zero. A labeling loophole allows any food that contains fewer than 0.5 grams of trans fat per serving to list "0" grams of trans fat on the label, so always check the ingredients list!

Caffeine is found in certain headache medications.
True emoticon

The blood vessels in the brain dilate (enlarge) during a headache. Caffeine constricts the blood vessels, which lessens the pain. It is also a mild pain reliever. This is why caffeine is found in headache medications like Excedrin Migraine (130 mg per 2 tablets), Midol Complete (120 mg per 2 tablets) and Anacin (64 mg per 2 tablets

The ''Freshman 15'' is a myth.
True emoticon

A 2011 study published in Social Science Quarterly showed that the typical weight gain during the first year of college is just 2.5 to 3.5 pounds and has little to do with higher learning and more to do with becoming a young adult. The not so good news: About 10 percent of freshmen will gain 15 pounds or more during their first year. And that's just the first year. Experts aren't as concerned about these actual pounds as they are about the rate at which students put them on. A 2008 study found that college students gain weight six times faster than the general population. And according to researchers, young adults continue to gain weight (1.5 pounds per year on average) during the four years after they graduate, too. Not all of this can be chalked up to "growing up," though. If left unchecked, the weight gain many experience as young adults can become a serious problem.

Which of the following statements about HDL is FALSE?
It's the unhealthy cholesterol emoticon

HDL (High Density Lipoprotein) is the good, healthy cholesterol. HDL picks up and carries excess cholesterol away from artery walls and brings it back to the liver for processing and removal. You want this number to be high (at least 60 mg/dL)to protect your heart. Levels too low (less than 40 mg/dL) are bad for your health, increasing your risk for heart disease. Click here to learn about other important cholesterol numbers, like LDL and triglycerides.

Chronic stress can literally make you sick.
True emoticon

According to the National Institutes of Health, hormones (like cortisol) that hang around during chronic stress can put us at risk for obesity, heart disease, cancer, and a variety of other illnesses. Take time out of your day to do a relaxing activity you enjoy, like journaling, meditating, going for a jog, or talking to a friend on the phone. Return refreshed and kick your stressors to the curb!

Which burger is lower in fat?
Wendy's Jr. Hamburger emoticon

Wendy's Jr. Hamburger makes a smart choice. Enjoy this burger for 280 calories and 9 grams of fat (3.5 grams saturated fat) and both your taste buds and your waistline will be happy. Hardee's Slammer is a bit lower in calories (240), but higher in fat (12 grams) and saturated fat (5 grams), which you should try to avoid if you're watching your cholesterol levels. Both of these are the lowest-cal burger options at their respective locations. If you want cheese, factor in about 40 more calories, and always say no to the high-fat special sauces and mayo.

In Tabata training, what percentage of your maximum heart rate should you shoot for to reap the most physical benefits?
75% emoticon

While you don't have to have a heart rate monitor to do a Tabata-training workout, it certainly can come in handy. "Maximum effort" is by definition about 90%-95% of your maximum heart rate (calculate your max heart rate here), but working out this hard is generally reserved for only advanced exercisers and athletes. For Tabata training workouts, aim for 75% or more of your maximum heart rate to reap the most benefit.

Health problems such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension and depression are UNRELATED to the amount and quality of a person's sleep.
False emoticon

Studies have found a relationship between the quantity and quality of one's sleep and many health problems. For example, insufficient sleep affects growth hormone secretion that is linked to obesity; as the amount of hormone secretion decreases, the chance for weight gain increases. Blood pressure usually falls during the sleep cycle. However, interrupted sleep can adversely affect this normal decline, leading to hypertension and cardiovascular problems. Research has also shown that insufficient sleep impairs the body's ability to use insulin, which can lead to the onset of diabetes. More and more scientific studies are showing correlations between poor and insufficient sleep and disease.

In order for exercise to improve your cholesterol levels, it must be:
None of the Above emoticon

Exercise can increase your HDL (good) levels while lowering your LDL (bad) cholesterol. You'll be happy to know that you don't need to spend countless hours in the gym to achieve the heart-health benefits of getting active. The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes of exercise on most days of the week.

Even moderate activity, if done daily, can make a difference. Research shows cholesterol improvements are related to the amount of activity and not to the intensity of the exercise. Even if you lose little weight, exercise can help you improve your cholesterol levels. Heart-healthy changes can occur inside your body before any benefits are seen on the outside.

Although everyone should consult their health care provider before starting an exercise program, in most cases, you won't need medical supervision to exercise safely and effectively.

Where does most of the fuel you burn during exercise come from?
Stored carbohydrates and fat emoticon

Most of the fuel you use during exercise doesnít come from the food you've recently eaten! It actually comes from the carbohydrates (called "glycogen") and fat that's stored in your muscles, liver, and fat cells. Thatís enough to fuel 1-2 hours of very intense exercise or 3-4 hours of moderate intensity exercise

When exercising with high blood pressure, what is the best advice to follow?
All of the above emoticon

When you have high blood pressure, listening to your body is important. Always talk to your doctor first. Your top priority is to neutralize the threat of blood pressure before you push yourself toward more dramatic exercise goals. Frequency (number of exercise sessions per week) is more important than intensity.

To lose body fat, it doesn't matter what you eat as long as you stay within your calorie range
False emoticon

Your body has many complex processes that determine when energy gets put into and taken out of storage (fat cells). These processes are directly affected by what, when and how much you eat. Eating a healthy, balanced diet will make it easier for your body to burn fat and prevent the food you eat from being stored as fat. Whole, minimally processed foods and nutritionally-balanced meals are better than meals that are high in refined sugars, sodium, and/or processed grains. It's much harder for your body to turn lean protein, fruits, veggies and whole grains into fat than it is to turn sugar and refined foods into fat, for example. And more research is showing that a diet of whole foods is metabolized more efficiently than modern-day's processed food products, which may slow metabolism and lead to weight gain.

What are the 4 fat-soluble vitamins?
Vitamins A, D, E, and K emoticon

Four vitamins are fat-soluble: A, D, E, and K. Fat-soluble vitamins dissolve in fat. To be carried in your bloodstream and throughout your body, they must be attached to body chemicals made of lipids or fat. Your body is able to store these fat-soluble vitamins in body fat. Getting a new supply each day is not essential. Harmful, toxic levels of the fat-soluble vitamins can occur when excess amounts are consumed on a regular basis, usually from supplements

Appetite and hunger are one in the same

False emoticon

Appetite is not the same thing as hunger; it actually refers to an interest in food. It's often said that someone's appetite can override their hunger and fullness. When some people feel stressed, they could lose their appetite and choose to ignore feelings of hunger. (Others respond the opposite way, eating in response to stress or negative emotions despite a lack of hunger or strong feelings of fullness.) And how many times have you sat down to a delicious meal and continued eating even though you were experiencing sensations of fullness? That, too, is an example of appetite overriding the signals from your body. As you start becoming more aware of hunger signals, do not confuse appetite with physical signs of hunger.

With each step you take, how much force do your knees and hips experience?
2-4 times your body weight emoticon

Every time you take a step, the force on your knees and hips equals two to three times your body weight! Climbing down steps will increase the pressure on your knees and hips by six-foldóthat's 900 pounds of pressure for a person who weights just 150 pounds. Your risk of developing osteoarthritis generally increases with the amount of weight that your joints have to bear. Once osteoarthritis has developed, being overweight exacerbates the condition.

What symptoms might indicate you have the flu as opposed to a cold?
All of the above emoticon

Sometimes it's hard to tell whether the symptoms you're exhibiting indicate a cold or the flu. But in general, all of the characteristics above indicate the flu. Colds are characterized by nasal congestion, coughing, sneezing and sometimes a low-grade fever (under 100 degrees Fahrenheit). While a cold comes on gradually and mildly, the flu arises suddenly. The flu can cause cold-like symptoms like nasal and chest congestion, but it also results headaches, overall body aches, a high, persistent fever (102-104 degrees F), and exhaustion. It can take several weeks to recover from the flu.

Because they are high in cholesterol, eggs, especially the yolks, should be avoided at all costs.

False emoticon

In the past, people thought that because eggs are high in dietary cholesterol, they were not a heart-healthy protein option. We now understand that saturated and trans fats are more responsible for raising your cholesterol levels than dietary cholesterol, and an egg a day (which has a mere 1.5 grams saturated fat) is a healthy habit for most people. Even though most of the fat is found in the yolks, itís important to include them! Most of the vitamins and minerals, as well as 40% of the protein, call the yolk home.

What does 'isometric' mean?

Same length emoticon

Isometric means "same length." This is a high-intensity contraction of the muscle with no change in the length of the muscle. In other words, your muscles are working hard but the muscle itself remains static. Isometric exercises are good for variety and some strength maintenance, but they don't challenge your body enough to build much strength.

Cold and flu season is in full swing! To stop germs from spreading, how long should you wash your hands at each session?

20 seconds emoticon

The number one way to defend yourself during cold and flu season is to wash your hands, including under the nails and in between fingers for at least 20 seconds with warm, soapy water - and to do so frequently.

The best way to get rid of belly fat is by doing more abdominal exercises like crunches.
False emoticon

There is no way to target weight loss to a specific area of the body because your body decides where it wants to put on weight and where it wants to take it off. The midsection is a common "problem" area for many people. The best way to lose fat is through cardiovascular exercise. It is important to do a variety of abdominal exercises (including crunches) to keep your core strong, but until that excess fat is gone, you will not see the muscle definition.

Rewarding yourself for completing certain goals each week is an example of:

Incentive reward emoticon

Because the inherent benefits of nutritious eating and exercise aren't always noticeable to the naked eye, it helps to program in external incentives for acting in healthy ways. Hold off on seeing that blockbuster movie, buying that new song for your iPod or having that fancy dinner out: You can use those favorite items and activities as incentives for working on your wellness throughout the week. That is why reward systems work so well when creating health, fitness or weight-loss goals

Residents of developed countries (like the U.S.) are MORE likely to experience allergies than people in developing areas of the world.

True emoticon

Generally speaking, developed countries have much higher incidences of allergies than developing areas of the world. Scientists believe that the clean and sanitized homes of the industrialized world are actually detrimental to the immune system, and that exposure to illness-causing bacteria is necessary for the immune system to function optimally. When your immune system is not challenged by natural foes, it malfunctions and becomes supersensitive to seemingly harmless substances.

False emoticon

Thin people, fit individuals, and even those who are at a healthy weight (and healthy body fat percentage) can have cellulite, just as some unfit and overweight people may not have it. Most women will have cellulite to some degree. Whether or not you develop cellulite depends on factors like genetics, gender and hormonal levels.

About ____% of the calories you consume post-workout should come from carbohydrates. 60

60 emoticon

Roughly 60% of the calories you eat at this time should come from carbohydrates. Contrary to popular belief, your body needs more carbohydrates than protein after a workout, to replace the muscle fuel (glycogen) you used up and to prepare for your next exercise session.

Even if you eat healthy and exercise regularly, your cholesterol levels are more likely to be elevated if you are overweight.

True emoticon

Being overweight increases your blood cholesterol levels since your body stores the extra calories you eat as triglycerides. When these triglyceride levels are high, HDL (good) cholesterol levels tend to be low, a combination that is associated with an increased risk for heart disease. Losing just 10% of your body weight (25 pounds for someone who weights 250 pounds), can improve your cholesterol levels.

According to the glycemic index, people should eat more foods that have...

Low Glycemic Index emoticon

One system for classifying carbohydrates is the glycemic index. The glycemic index ranks foods on how they affect blood sugar level by measuring how much the blood sugar increases after one eats. For example, white bread is digested quickly into glucose, causing blood sugar to spike quickly. Therefore white bread has a high glycemic index number. In contrast, brown rice is digested more slowly, causing a lower, more gentle change in blood sugar. It therefore has a lower glycemic index number.

Soluble and insoluble fiber have the same functions and benefits?

False emoticon

Eating foods with soluble fiber may help to lower blood cholesterol and decrease your risk of heart disease. These foods may also help lower blood sugar levels, which is important if you have diabetes.

Insoluble fiber is often called roughage or bulk because it keeps the digestive system running smoothly. This helps with constipation, hemorrhoids, and other digestive problems. It may help to prevent some types of cancer.

Lipid panels and fasting - The spark quiz answer is wrong based on current guidance.

How long do you need to fast before getting a lipid profile test done?

24 hours
******9-12 hours******* Spark quiz correct answer
6-8 hours
You don't need to fast before a lipid profile test

Actual correct answer: You don't need to fast before a lipid profile test.
Or more realistic correct answer: whatever your doctor tells you, because a lot of them don't know current guidance either, and I guess they'll interpret it according to the fasting window they give you. Also, the tests normally used are not very accurate at high or low ends (and studies do not show any relationship between high cholesterol and heart disease). Other than that, great question.

https://www.statnews.com/2016/04/29/fast
ing-cholesterol-testing/

Whatís behind the new recommendation?

This change has been coming for some time. It is driven by data from a dozen-plus studies that include more than 300,000 people whose cholesterol and other lipids were measured when they hadnít fasted. Their levels predicted cardiovascular risk, as well as, or possibly better than, fasting lipid levels.

Nonfasting levels might be better?

After you eat, your digestive system converts some of the carbohydrates and fats into triglycerides. Their level in the bloodstream rises, then gradually falls. If the triglyceride level rises too much, itís a signal that the body has trouble metabolizing food. Think of eating as a stress test for metabolism. Thatís something you canít see if youíve been fasting.

Cholesterol doesn't play a significant role in your body; it's just bad for you.

False emoticon

Cholesterol is a building block of body cells and hormones. It makes up 50 percent of your nervous system, and is necessary for metabolism. In moderate amounts, it is essential to good health. But the dangers of high cholesterol, including artery blockage and heart disease, are well-documented. Other studies suggest that very low cholesterol levels can also be harmful and dangerous. The key seems to be making sure your body has enough--but not too much

There are 5 components of fitness. Which of the following isn't one of them?

Warm Up emoticon

These five components of fitness should be included in your own fitness program. To be considered fit, you need to meet certain standards in each of these five areas, which include 1- body composition (your weight, fat mass, lean muscle mass, and fat distribution), 2- aerobic fitness (ability to sustain moderate-intensity activity for extended periods of time), 3- flexibility (the range of motion of several joints), 4- muscular strength (maximum amount of force you can perform with a single contraction), and 5- muscular endurance (ability to repeat high-intensity muscle contractions). While warm-ups aren't part of the 5 components of fitness, they should be part of your workouts. You should warm-up before aerobic, strength, and flexibility exercises.

One gram of fat contains 9 calories, but alcohol is not a nutrient because it cannot be used in the body to promote growth, maintenance, or repair. It is a toxin that is broken down as an energy (calorie) source and can be converted to fat.

Surrounding yourself with people who tend to overeat makes YOU more likely to overeat, too.

True emoticon

Surrounding yourself with people who tend to overeat makes YOU more likely to overeat, too. Researcher Brian Wansink (author of "Mindless Eating") found that we mirror (to a point) the amount that our company consumes. We consciously and/or unconsciously follow the "consumption norm" of those we dine with by emulating how much they eat in order to achieve acceptance. Dr. Wansink's studies reflected this behavior, and it's important to be aware and attempt to make a conscious decision about how much you eat when eating among others

Which of the following statements about alcohol's effects on blood sugar is correct?
Alcohol Can Both Raise AND Lower Blood Sugar emoticon

Alcohol can interfere with your blood glucose control, both raising and lowering blood sugar. Once in your system, alcohol initially lowers blood sugar, which can lead to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Some alcoholic beverages can raise your blood sugar because of their high carbohydrate content. To prevent your blood sugar from going too high, avoid sweet wines, liqueurs, and sweetened drinks like daiquiris, margaritas, pina coladas, etc. and choose lower-carb drinks.
