I have found that I only do well in shoes with "zero heel lift" like my Fivefingers (barefoot running shoes) or my Merrell "gloves" . I have severe arthritis in both knees, as well as my feet and would be in so much pain that just walking was torture by days end. Since discovering a shoe that worked to eliminate the pain I have completed 4 5k's and hike with my Nordic poles every week.
If you still have too much pain you might want to talk to the running stor about trying a shoe more geared to barefoot style running, they are the ones that are very flexible and have "zero heel" so you strike on your forefoot rather than your heel. (less shock on the knees that way).

Good luck and congrats on getting out there.

Thanks for your reply. After about a week my leg pain stopped, so I think it had to do with the new shoes. I also noticed the heel in my new shoes were higher than the ones in my old shoes, which seemed lower to the ground. I appreciate the feedback!

I would call and talk to the salesperson at the running store. Most of us newbie runners have some soreness in our legs as we progress in our training, but the professionals at the store will maybe be able to tell you if what you are experiencing is just normal pain or if the shoes are causing something else altogether.

My running store lets you make returns even if you've tried them out. Maybe call them and ask about exchanging them.

I've been running for about 2 months now and last week I decided to get some new shoes at a running store. I bought my previous pair based on how they looked on the shelf and since my arches collapse when I stand as well as I over-pronate, I figured I should go to a real running store and have someone help me out.

I'm still on a walk/jog plan to get up to a 5k, however in my old shoes I was able to run almost a mile without stopping to walk. I started using my new shoes on Saturday and went out Sunday and tonight as well. I'm noticing a lot more muscle soreness in my calf and shin muscles. I put one of my old and new shoes on each foot and I was able to tell that my new shoes have more of a lift in the heel (if I'm saying that right). Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I'm assuming I'm just having some soreness because I'm using different muscles now, I sure hope I didn't end up getting shoes that weren't for me.
