I'm a bit surprised your doctor is vague on this issue. Most ortho offices have docs that special on certain injuries and are very knowledgeable with sports injury. This being so, usually a specific plan is drawn up to allow for healing(surgery is necessary). If you aren't satisfied with your doctor, who is the one that should be advising you on this issue, it might benefit you for a second opinion.
Hope you heal quickly and are back at what you enjoy doing soon.

Has anyone had MCL problems and what did you do about it. I am wearing a brace and taking a break from running. But I don't want to have to quit running-I love it too much. However I don't want to hurt my knee anymore than it is. Any advice? My dr are vague on the issue
