YAY Greta!!! It means we're NOT crazy (power in numbers). Well, at least it means we are not crazy for chewing gum. I even blow bubbles too... once though, I tried to blow a bubble and spit the gum out on accident. I don't think anyone saw, but I was embarrassed.

Audrey! I chew gum too! When I first started running, I had a hard time controlling my breathing and my mouth would feel like cotton. Now, my breathing is more regular and relaxed. I sometimes even blow bubbles when I get bored or am on a tough hill. I think it helps me relax. My family (runners!) think I'm crazy and say I am expending unnecessary energy, but hey, it works for me! I always start my runs with gum. On my long runs, I even stash some extra pieces.

To PREVENT side stitches I found that chewing gum works for me. I don't know why it works. From the other comments, it sounds like a good breathing pattern is key and maybe chewing gum gives me that rhythm?!? Worth a try.

This is taken out of "Running for Mortals" wriiten by John "The Penguin" Bingham and Coach Jenny Hadfield: "If you get a side stitch, focus on exhaling as the foot on the opposite side of the stitch hits the ground. So if you have a stitch on your right side, exhale as your left foot hits the ground. Slow your pace, and the stitch will disappear." Hope this is helpful to.

Side stitches are usually caused by irregualr breathing--taking quick short breaths in thru your mouth. Try slowing your pace a bit and taking deep breaths in thru your nose and out thru your mouth.

My guess is that you are running too fast and/or your run is too close to the last time that you ate. I have heard of runners say that when their right side hurts, they will raise their right arm to alleviate that pain ... same for the left side. Give it a try!
