I have to work on getting back to running. I walked a 15 mile event a week and a half ago and had been doing a lot of long walks for training (usually 5 to 7 miles a day and 10 or so on at least one weekend day) and I've had a hard time shortening my walking up and down hills for miles to have energy to work on the running. I'm still doing the very long walks. Yesterday 6 1/2 miles.

I got out yesterday. I only walked because it's spring break and my friend had her kids with us. We didn't get far. A little chilly with the wind. We are going on a family hike tomorrow, but I'm hoping for a run on Friday. I hope you all are doing well!

Hi there! I ended up walking almost 5 miles today. I didn't run today because my shin splits are still hurting. When I walk they are tender, but after I run they ache. I need to ice them for a few days. I'm hoping to be able to start running again on Monday. I will walk Friday so I'm still moving, and then the weekend I can ice them really well and we'll see.

Great Job! It's awesome that you got out there. I am only going out MWF for now. My shins are really hurting still. Today I'm going to go walking and a little running. I will post how I do later today. It's rainy here in Southern Idaho right now which will make it sort of fun, or it might be a rec center day.

I think you're doing a good job listening to your body. I have shin splits pretty bad, especially in my left leg, but I can only do what I can do. Walking is better than nothing for sure! emoticon

that's good, I think. I did walk about 40 minutes. I hope they don't throw me off, because I originally was commenting on your status, so it's ok I did no running.

My hip is a tiny bit tweaked. I don't know if it is really from running; it just seemed to make it moer pronounced.

Today, I ran for maybe a 1/4 of a mile and then walked the rest. I walked a total of 4 miles. My goal is to walk before I can run, but try running as much as I can. I feel pretty good for what I did. I didn't run for too long, but for a beginner I'm telling myself that I did what I could today and that's enough and I'm happy with it. emoticon

I started using a couch to 5K, but it really progressed faster than my level of running and that held me back over the last two months. I have a tendency to quit instead of slowing it down. When it had me run for 5 minutes straight I couldn't do it and instead of trying for 3-4 minutes I stopped altogether. This time, I'm going to just do my own running program as I get comfortable. I have issues with shin splits and knees. I started water aerobics to help build the muscles in my knees, it helped, but then the gym has closed the pool for construction over the last month.
Don't convince yourself that you shouldn't run. You can do it, but just start slower. My brother came back and ran with me and he said I was running way to fast for being a beginner and I was tensing up. So we started running just slightly faster than a walk and it was slow, but I could keep running and it felt good. Maybe slow down a bit.

Thanks for the encouragement! We can do it. I may just run what I can, but walk for 30 minutes afterward until I can add more. I got that idea from "running for cookies.com". It's a gal on this website who shared how she got started. It's her blog and it's super encouraging.

I think that's awesome to do your first 5K. Great! Did you use a special program to train?

Your ahead of me. I'm started my 3 time around. This time I am SLOW, because my left hip was irritated.
maybe know what the deal is.

'm not convinced I shouldn't run, just learn some tips or warm ups. I'm trying to figure it out.

Anyhow, I'm happy for you. emoticon

Hello, I'm new to this group. I started training for a 5K over the winter and I ran/walked my first 5K today. I finished. That is what counts. My training was interrupted through the winter, but after today I'd like to keep it up and be able to call myself a runner. It was great being around people with the passion to run. It was encouraging. It's so hard for me. I have issues not being able to pace myself and breathing. My breathing needs to be better controlled because I'm prone to panic attacks and running can sometimes trigger that, but nonetheless...I'm running. I'm doing it and I'm excited that even though it's super hard, I'm doing it.

I walked in the neighborhood to a upward hill street behind my hose, and ran past the school and around the corner. It took around an hour. I don't run much yet, but hope to prevent the hip issues.

I also read here, it's not good thing to run on the sidewalk, so I ran on the edge of the street.

WTG! I hope no hip issues for you!

Yesterday I got in my 11 miles of jogging and 1 mile cool down walk. Furthest yet! Woot.was carrying a camel pack on back to stay hydrated. It weighed more than I thought...6 lbs after run!
Rest day from running but will do strength and a power walk! emoticon

Friday I ran down the hill behind my house and around the block. It only about 4 blocks, but I'm starting back again. I hope I don't get a problem with my hip again.

I've only had it sometimes from riding my bike or running, not anything else, and only on my left side. emoticon

There's a little park 1.5 miles from my house that has a .5 mile trail in it. My daily routine is to walk to the park and then do 2 miles in the park at run/walk 2/1 or 3/1, then walk back home. The whole thing takes me around 70 minutes. I was so happy to find a message board with walkers/joggers that aren't doing 8 minute miles! I don't want to be fast, I just want to be consistent.
