I have to second "Five Women Wearing the Same Dress." I played Francis in college and it is still one of my favorite theatrical experiences.

I was also a member of a theater company in Chicago that did a lot of plays with 100% gender reversal - all the female parts played by men and all the male parts played by women. It was kind of campy, but really a lot of fun.

So the original post was over two years ago, but what the hey... I was in Stage Door with about 20 women -- a few men -- kind of a long, boring play, but kind of good too. It's just 30s humor and is a little dated... but the right actors could pull it off.

Nothing wrong with strange and edgy. In fact, I like strange and edgy! I'll have to check out that play.

I have been in "The Women" and it's a hoot. A lot of fun to do! I've also heard of it being modernized, which might be a fun project.

You might consider "Fefu and her Friends"--a little edgy and strange at times, but challenging from an actor's standpoint.

Another thought: Of courese there is always "The Women" with a cast of about 30 women. However, it is very, very dated. You would have to play it as a sort of period piece. There are some fun roles.

I also see no one has suggested "Steel Magnolias". Probably way overdon.

I realize you have chosen the actual production long ago. But thier seems to be an ongoing discussion in this regard. So I thought I'd throw my 2 cents in.emoticon

My daughter-in-law will be appearing in an all female production of "Titus Andronicus" in Minneapolis in June.

I was in a production of the Scottish play a couple of years ago. We had one guy playing the Scottish Lord, and 5 women did all the other parts. It was a blast. Besides, being one of the witches, I was Duncan, a murderer, and the porter. I loved doing the porter's speech.

So our friend the Bard can be adapted to all or mostly female casts.emoticon

Okay, I'll second the "A My Name Is Alice" vote. Back in my college days I had to run follow-spot for a 6 week run of the show - so I still have pretty much every song memorized. While at the time it was fodder for recurring nightmares, upon reflection it was actually a pretty solid all-female show. It's more a collection of stand-alone numbers than an ensemble piece, but still worth a look.

It also depends on audience they are targeting. I like the below suggestions...also, dramatic but sweet two woman play "Grace and Glorie" by Tom Zeigler (easy single room set for small theater), also some of the Nunsense series musicals are all woman and always draw a good crowd plus actors enjoy it no end---just requires a number of rolling set props and will fine in small theater as well. I know there is more but those are the first that come to mind!

Why We Have a Body by Claire Chaffee 4 women

The Women - it's an old warhorse, but it's something like 18-24 women in it, and it's wickedly funny

David's Redhaired Death - 2 women

It's tough to find great plays with mostly women that aren't completely unknown - we struggle with that issue every season...

Well I can see that I am 3 months late coming to this discussion - just found this corner of Spark. A, My Name is Alice is a great all female musical. I did an all female production of Romeo & Juliet a few years ago, but it was not a lesbian version. We were actually portraying the men as men. It was fun, I was Friar Lawrence. The girl who did Romeo was fabulous in the role - really convincing as an adolescent male.

Crimes of the Heart is a fabulous suggestion - of course there is always Steel Magnolias.

I'll suggest it to my friend. :) I am actually not involved w/ the production. I still haven't done any theatre since coming out to LA. I did ensemble in one opera, but that's it. :/ It's been 2 years since I've had a role in a production. I really need to get over my audition fright. yipes stripes. :/

I need to stop saying "if" or "when" and just do it. That's why I'm here. Let's do this together!

I'll second the vote for Nine -- I know you're doing a straight play this time around, but maybe next time...it's a really, really great show. I just started working on a production of it and I'm so in love with the music. This is one of those shows where I'm happier being in the ensemble instead of playing a lead because the choral work is so lovely. We're doing it with a cast of one man, one boy...and twenty women!

This idea is probably too late, but if a musical is possible, what about "Nine"? It's mostly women, other than Guido and a few small boys.

We've just had this problem in our drama class at uni. We just today chose "The Fansdale avenue ladies dramatic guild presents Macbeth" 3male and 8 female i think it was. major face, very funny. Really hoping to either play Mrs Reece, Henry (so i can be a girl playing a guy playing a girl) or Felicity. But holidays started today Hooray! for 2 weeks so i've got a break and don't have to worry about it for now.
btw I'm new to the group. Studying a BA in Drama and i act in various community theatre productions. I'm from Australia and I love to read.
I'm trying to lose weight for a production we're doing at the end of the semester.
look fwd to getting to know you all

They ended up choosing "Last of the Red Hot Lovers", but they are keeping all of the suggestions I gathered for them for next year. Hopefully I'll be able to be a part of the productions. :) I haven't done any theatre since graduating in May 05. I miss it!

The Vagina Monologues comes to mind for an all female cast.

Another really nice small show is Over the River and Through the Woods (3 females, 3 males) Very cute, heart-warming production.

Another small production, wonderful script is WIT. Tough show, but a great script. One main female character and some smaller ensemble parts could be mostly female.

Hey everyone,

A friend of mine needs a show pronto get up and running for his small theatre company. The production they were working on fell through and they have the space rented so they'd like to fill it! They are looking for a straight show with an all female or primarily female cast. Steel Magnolias is being done by a pro theatre nearby so they can't get the rights. Anyone have any other great ideas?

I need to stop saying "if" or "when" and just do it. That's why I'm here. Let's do this together!
