Last weekend I worked we were so busy, the nights wehn your lucky you get bathroom break.. This week i work Wed, Thur, Fri and it is so slow and boring. We have a couple of surgeries coming in tomorrow. I like when it's busy but not so busy you don't have time to go to the bathroom. Slow nights, I have to be really careful not to snack. Hopefully, tomorrow night will be steady

TAMI-42 & EBBUNNY I am sorry that you are feeling discouraged. I know I have been in an "I don't want to" place for the last 1/2 week.

As both of you mentioned change will come in time. I chose for my progress marker a rabbit because their are some times when I make great/fast progress & other times when I. Seem to be sitting still & getting no where. It sounds like each of you are working towards a healthier liffe. Your positive actions mean more than numbers on a scale or frustration. I have a couple psychiatrist friends who say that even having frustration is important in our lives, as it can be a motivator topush you the next step forward.

As I mentioned, I have kind of been in a emotional funk since Thhursday (the last time I got out of the house was Wednesday). I seem to have overcome it this afternoon, as I got a couple of things done around the house. Tuesday, I see my psychologist for my weekly brain tune-up. I am also hoping to go to a religious service, while I am in the city.

Remember, each step doesn't necessarily move us forward, unless we learn lessons from each step we take.

I'm feeling quite frustrated today. Not sure if it's hormonal or just an overwhelming sense of not being adaquate. I know I just started- in my head I know I can't expect to see a dramatic change in a week. But when the scale doesn't budge- not up or down- just not at all- it's frustrating because my diet has changed- and I'm working my tuckus off! I know it will take time- but today- I'm cranky because of it.

hmm - i am discouraged today emoticon

I eat as healthy as possible and will admit to having a hard time fitting the exercise in and still, I gain weight. Ready to throw in the towel but scared to actually do it.

Got talked into getting good tennis shoes for walking/running with my church friends that are training for the 1/2 marathon. They feel pretty good on my feet. Also got a pedometer, as I tend to loose my free ones. This one has 2 clips, so hopefully at least one of them will stay attached when I crouch down to see whether that imaginary dog is under the bed or not.

Practicing "no" is a good thing.

WARNING: Don't practice some of the "no's" I am in the habit of:
NO to exercise, NO to healthy meals, NO to what I need/want

Instead say "no" to loafing on the couch all day/night, taking on others responsibilities, the cookies, candies & many of the other "treats" of the season

To a healthy New Year in 2013

JMOSESRN- I hope your relief made it in this morning. I agree that 12 hrs is enough. Some shifts we want to have end before they even begin.

CMITCHELL34- I hope your night off is relaxing. Those 3 in a row can be tough, but it does allow us to have blocks of time off the those 8-5ers don't get..

I'll keep putting job applications in hopes to get some good news.

Working the night shift here in Vermont. We're getting hit with this storm. Fingers crossed that my relief makes it in into morning so I can go home. 12 hours is enough.

Relieved to be back to a normal schedule. I was at work 23 hours Wednesday/Thursday with the blizzard. Worked 17 of those hours. Yucko!

Hi. Well, I'm on my 3rd of 3 shifts- whew!! Last night was terribly exhausting, so today I didn't exercise, but- thanks to drugs, I slept really well today. So, hopefully tomorrow morning I will re-start my walking routine, which I've neglected since Thanksgiving- I need to rid myself of these few pounds that crept back on the scale.
There are no layoff where I'm at, but one day we're slow and get pulled to another unit or flex off (woohoo), then the next they call for extra help to come in - you just never know (it's an ICU).

Here in the St. Louis area we are have hospital layoffs. One hospital alone cut 174 job, 25 of them, management. I, work in the OR as a instrument technician in central processing. Surgeries will always keep me and nurses in business! We have been understaffed and overworked for months now. My coworkers are getting sick and calling in. And injuries are happening everywhere! The demands of the RN's in morning or too numerous to mention without getting trippy and spastic trying to please everyone is so hard. You please one then you neglect one..vice o' versa.
I make myself exercise before I go to work, yoga, weight lifting, I have to make myself do it. And I learn to adjust my back to where it pops just right. Boy! I feel so much better when I pop my back.
Working night shift has been a challenge I had to visit my Dr. to get on sleeping pills and anxiety drugs. So, far, so good.
I hope you guys are doing well in the world of medicine. It's a jungle out there!

Carpe Diem!!

Oh- vacation sounds nice! Hope you enjoy your time off MS! I've just finished my first of three 12 hours for the week. Came home and planned to go walking, but my plants needed some TLC, so I did yard work and gardening for an hour, now I'm going to sleep. Hope everyone enjoys their shifts this week and tracks food and exercise every day!!

Happy Monday! I'm on vacation this week. I couldn't be happier after working all this overtime since April. Today I decided to get my life back on track. I'm not going to say diet because I want this to be a permanent change. I want to be healthier and happier!

My week is just starting tonight, I'm doing 3 12-hour shifts and will really try to walk or do a video after work at least 2 of the mornings. I was pretty lazy on my days off, I think I exercised once and didn't even walk during the 4 days(nights). Of course I slept all the first day and the last day (today). It's just so easy to be lazy for me when I'm off ~

Getting ready to head to work, day 2 of 3, just cooked chicken and mixed vegetables - already tracked it. I track from midnight to midnight - just easier since that's how the tracker works. So far today I have 350 calories from last nights eating and 350 from my dinner now; but I also have 45 minutes of walking that I did this morning after work!! emoticon

So I started the Beach Body Challenge yesterday and I am using the Shakeology shake. I thought I was going to die when I did the first video, oh I am doing the Turbo Jam, bit I did ok. I am going to have to figure out when I am going to do it on nights that I work, I think that my only option is to do it when I get home instead of hitting the pillow!!!

We went live with epic in March and things seem to be getting back on track. People still complain about it but I do like it for the most part. Give it some time and you won't ever want to go to back to paper charting again!!!

The hospital I work at went live with Epic at the beginning of June so I completely feel your pain! I also worked like a 110 hours in 2 weeks...it was enough to drive me nuts. It has finally settled down quite a bit and feels a lot more routine. Still the occasional glitch though. But it will get better, I promise! I hope you enjoyed your time at Myrtle Beach! I don't have a true vacation until the end of September...6 weeks to go and definitely counting down!

We are using Soarian. We are live on all campuses but only using half the system. The doctors go up with doing their own orders next month. This will be interesting! LOL I wish you the best of luck with the new system, its challenging but hopefully will pay off in the end.

My day has been great, but I'm sleep deprived. Insomnia is a pain!!

Here I am trying to get back on track....grr...up 20lbs from last year at this time despite running four 1/2 marathons and doing one spring triathlon during the year. Just need to resign myself to the fact I always have to track my food...clearly I am unable to make good choices by myself :(

My day is going great! Because it's a night. Yes, I stay up on my nights off. I'm married and my husband works opposite from me - I believe it's the secret to our happy marriage emoticon but I am working tonight, Monday and then Tuesday and yes, our charge nurses on Post Partum NEVER take an assignment when they are in charge. On rare occasion, they do take staff assignments if we are short, but again, it's rare. And, sometimes, we on postpartum take care of special care babies that are housed in their mom's room if the SCN is short-staffed, but the SCN nurse shares the responsibility and handles meds, IVs.

I have a question for the night nurses out there but I'll post it on a separate thread!

You asked....

I work in a 70 bed level III NICU, and no matter how many times we tell the Clinical Leaders (nurses who don't take and assignent....ever!) that having all of the rooming in babies in one assignment sucks, they keep doing it. sooooooo.

I am trying to tell myself that I can't do anything about my lazy, incompetent CL, I can only control my response to her.

Worked Sat night, VERY busy! Found out 2 of my co-workers have turned in resignations, Boo! Have been busy already this morning at home, so much to do. Having to fight the urges to both eat and go back to bed. Why is it so difficult to "be good"?

I did some walking today at the Osage beach mall. My daughter and I had fun. I didn't spend too much money which is great. Patty 453 you post reminds me of the movie airplane where Leslie Nelison says this is a bad week to quit ...smoking, drinking, etc. That is a funny movie. Patty 453 forgive yourself and start fresh. Uggh emoticon Am now realizing that a vacation week was probably NOT the time to try and start this better living thing.....while I have been very active (for me) I have made some really bad food choices and the scale is moving in the wrong direction. Think I might restart Sparking next week, when I am back at work.

I have lost some more weight. I'm down to 266lbs. yeah. More water and good eating today. Cleaning house and packing. Next week on vacation, we will be doing a lot of painting. The joys of moving.

Patty 453 give Daisy an extra snuggle for me. My two are Selphie and Bloo (Selphie is in the picture with my cat). I am so excited. I had a victory today. No doughnuts. Day shift brought in doughnuts and I did not have one bite. yeah for small victories.

TGIF! Off for the weekend. And knee-deep in spring cleaning, thanks to a 'surprise' visit from West Coast SIL, coming Sunday. (How'd this place get so grimy over the winter?) No rest for this wicked one.

LOVE all the dogs!

Sure hope I sleep better tonight, and that all of you are doing well!

HKLULU, yes it is a dachshund. Her name is Daisy and she is spoiled rotten, but is my snuggle buddy when I get off work in the mornings.

Patty 453 is that a dachshund? I love my dachshunds. I had a good but busy day. I was getting all my errands done and cleaning house. Taking out the trash, trash day tomorrow. I like to get as much done as possible before starting my work days, 3-12 hour shifts in a row.

My day's going well, I'm ready for work, have my lunch bag packed and am ready for my12 hours shift (2 of 3). I've been good about keeping up with eating smart and spending less time being sedentary. One nice thing about weekend shifts is the extra 15% pay that goes with it - a good incentive. And it's a different group of people to work with, so almost like a different job. Well- have a good weekend everyone - and keep moving and eating well.

Keep on Truckin'

Going good - Just got flexed off for tonight. Yay! Will have Christmas Dinner with my family and watch the Green Bay Packer game. Of course, I had to ask about my little patient - he's re-intubated - again - for the 5th time. Wish they'd okay a trach, family is against it. hmmm.
o well. Merry Christmas Night Shift Nurses!

Filling up after a couple weeks of low census . . .we actually shut down one of our ICU units for a week! Back up and running, although acuity is pretty low (intensivist must be pretty desperate too!). Nice pace for a change :0)

Havent posted to this Team in awhile. Trying to surround myself with positive people striving for the same goal - healthy lifestyle. Just finished a 6 nite streak of 12 hr shifts in the ER. Looking forward to a few days off. Started the 10 minutes a day exercise challenge a week ago. Im happy with myself that I was able to get at least the 10 minutes in even while working - something that has been a problem in the past.

This is the first day of my journey to a smaller me. I exercised, tho not as much as I had liked I got in 30 minutes of yoga , and some squats, lunges, and calf raises. I think that is a good start seeing as how I havent exercised in over 3 years.

So how is everyone else doing?

By the way my name is Ruth Ann and you will find my introductory entry on th introduce yourself here forum.

Have a great day everyone.

there was a ton of drama on my unit yesterday and the day before, but today wasn't too bad. well, there was a little craziness, but it wasn't nonstop like it sometimes is. my partner is getting over being sick and, thankfully, i don't seem to have caught anything from her. i'm keeping my fingers crossed! although it does seem that i am more often a vector for things than a sufferer...i'm probably colonized with god only knows what!

shift #2 of 3 tomorrow. i had time to do a little cooking tonight, so at least i'll have some veggies and whatnot to take for lunch. today i had to grab random things out of the fridge and cupboards as i hadn't had time to prepare anything. we got a ton of beautiful broccoli and kale from the farmers market. yum!

have a great weekend :)

Working on the last hour of a Friday night shift.... emoticon I had so hoped the full moon drama would be over for my weekend..(as it was actually full on Thursday).... BUT Nope... patients are crazy....However a busy shift makes for a "shorter" shift...I think.

Enjoy your Saturday! Drop a note and let us know what is going on in your world emoticon

Happy Friday!!

Andalex - your sleep will stabilize...... just takes a little time.. and we are getting ready to set our clocks BACK.... so maybe that will help. If you're like me... doesn't matter which way the clock is swinging... I stay messed up on time for weeks......

I feeling a little irritable tonight.. not sure why. I got a little nap in before work... but really would have rather just stayed in bed.... I'm getting ready for a heavy work week - a little OT next week - but hopefully it will help the christmas fund.... since currently there isn't one...

Wishing everyone restorative sleep and sweet dreams....... emoticon

the no sleeping thing sucks. my system's still sort of in shock, even after two weeks of day shift, but i'm still hoping my sleep patterns will get better. i've had my fair share of 36hr+ stretches of being awake, and i'm not eager to repeat that again! coffee and benadryl are my friends :)

Our scheduler tends to shake up our schedule a bit from time to time.. mostly depending on when she wants to work and when she wants off..

the schedule usually is 8s M-F and 12s on the weekend..... but for me.. this past weekend was 8-12-8-8, so not that bad. However, I could not sleep today and was still awake at 4pm. I actually called a co-worker to see if she's swtich around with me.... silly me.. she didn't return the call..... but I'm at work now. Not too bad, I brought candy and went trick or treating... GIVING out candy, not collecting it... tho' I must say, I had my share..... Tuesday and Wednesdays are off days for me this week... woo hoo.... am ready to be at home

emoticon YIKES!!! it's November 1st

A trip to the mountains sounds great!! So beautiful. But I'll have to settle for a trip to the beach, I guess! Doing something relalxing on my days off sounds like a great idea - like a mini-vacation. Let's see- sleep all day tomorrow, then try to stay awake Sat and Sun, then sleep all day Monday for working Monday night.... not much time for a vacation... oh well. ps-- this is a more positive spark team then some I've seen.... :-)

ahhh..... definitely my soul was fed..... it's back to work Monday night at Midnight..........

Today is going good! Better than yesterday anyway. Although I agree with Happyone331 about wishing I wasn't so tired on days off. Having more energy to get stuff done would be great.

On a stretch off. I need sometime to just relax at home. Can't wait to use my time to eat right, exercise, organize, and decompress.

Hope everyone's day is great. I have been off for a couple of days and living the day shift routine. back to work tomorrow for 5 out of 6 twelve hour nights. What was I thinking when I signed up for that? Actually, I do much better at work with my eating because I control what I eat, by what I bring. I try not to sample what others have brought in to tempt me.
