This is what I love most about Spark People!! You get such awesome advice and encouragement! I have now checked out the "11 exercises" and intend to do them regularly. So thanks for that :) Also for the Galloway info.....so interesting and relative for me. I think the only way to go for me now is...............FORWARD!

So many thanks to you, Slenderelle, and to all who answered my query emoticon

I'm 63 and use the Galloway method (run-walk-run) for runs over 2 miles. Galloway can start with 5 seconds run and 55 seconds walk. That's how Jeff Galloway himself rehabbed after hip surgery. There may be a Galloway group in your town. Google "Jeff Galloway" and you can see. I love the group runs with people at my own level. The team here on SparkPeople is good, too.

Also, when I was heavy I had bad knees. I used the Spark article, "11 Exercises to Strengthen and Stretch Your Knees" for several months - maybe a year - before I started running and I think it helped a lot. Of course, getting to goal weight helped, too. I think I got the title of that article right. If you can't find it, SparkMail me and I'll send you a link.

I did check with my doctor before I started running. That gave me confidence that it was okay.

Congrats on your regular exercise habit. You are doing great things for your body! Best wishes with your running. It can be an awesome joy!!

I would recommend the Galloway method of walk/run/walk. There is a group here on spark that is super helpful with it. I don't run solid anymore but actually do the run/walk method and I love it.

For me when I was 12 years old, the tendons were tiringaway from my knees . So I grow up with knee pains all the time if you want to try running there are a lot of c25k programs out there that are free you can try and see what fits you or if to much pain over and above the normal workout aches. If so you tried that is all you can ask of yourself . I used the nhs c25k and downloaded it to my ipod it tells you when to walk and when to run it also has ok music to keep you going . Good luck and have fun with it . It took me about 3 extra weeks to complete because of listening to my body and let it tell me if I'm ready to move on. emoticon

I am 64, 5'5" and female. I have a problem knee (injured many years ago and inspite of an operation still gives problems from time to time). I have been walking to lose weight and get fit for about 2 months now, increasing my distance and speed gradually till now I walk an average of 4 miles each week day at an average speed of 2.9mph. I have begun "power walking" and enjoy it. Someone told me I should start trying to walk/run and then stick to running. Every time I am out walking I try and summon the courage to run but each time I chicken out! Should I stick to walking (occasionally using the power walking technique) or should I really make an effort to introduce running to my daily walks? Your opinions would be great. Thanks.
