I'm 63 and use the Galloway method (run-walk-run) for runs over 2 miles. Galloway can start with 5 seconds run and 55 seconds walk. That's how Jeff Galloway himself rehabbed after hip surgery. There may be a Galloway group in your town. Google "Jeff Galloway" and you can see. I love the group runs with people at my own level. The team here on SparkPeople is good, too.
Also, when I was heavy I had bad knees. I used the Spark article, "11 Exercises to Strengthen and Stretch Your Knees" for several months - maybe a year - before I started running and I think it helped a lot. Of course, getting to goal weight helped, too. I think I got the title of that article right. If you can't find it, SparkMail me and I'll send you a link.
I did check with my doctor before I started running. That gave me confidence that it was okay.
