The Lambs Quarters are tasty! I just steam, them and put a little butter on them. They actually harvest them in some countries but, of course, here, we just call it a "weed". lol

We use the Peterson Field Guides to help us identify wild edibles and medicinal herbs. I love trying to identify everything in my yard. The past several years all I've done is collected dandelion leaves and flower heads. This year I've actually begun to use much more of what is growing wild in my yard ... white clovers for jelly (oh yum!), plantain to make salve, lambsquarters (simply identified as of yet), red bud (learned what they were after they were at the edible stage), and cleavers (keeping on hand as dried herbs). I know I have a lot more to identify out by the pond but I'm pretty happy about what I've gotten id'ed and using so far!
Several friends have also been identifying "weeds" in their yard as well and we've gotten some pretty interesting stuff that we can trade around if the need arises :D

I updated my Wild Edibles blog post with Maple, passing it on:
emoticon

Maple seeds can be eaten raw, dried, or cooked. You can also roast them in the oven at 350 degrees for about 8-10 minutes. You can also add them to salads. Dried ones can be powdered to add flavor to food or thicken sauces or soups. Just open up the plump end (opposite the wing-like things) and pull out the seeds. They are best eaten when green but can also be eaten when they turn brown but will have more of a bitter taste. Some maple seeds are more bitter than others. If they are bitter, you can leach out the tannins. Some say to boil out the tannins; but when I made acorn flour, (oak trees) I found it's actually better (and uses less energy) to do warm water baths. Soak for an hour or so and then pour off the water and repeat if necessary. This worked great when I made the acorn flour, and took the bitterness right out. I haven't tried this with maple seeds, but I don't know why it wouldn't work the same. I'll do an update later. :)

Besides making Maple syrup, you can also eat the inner bark (raw, boiled or roasted) and young leaves (raw or cooked) as they emerge.

I like trying wild things. I'll put flowers in a salad and Trout Lily bulbs to make it more interesting. :) Now, I'll have to try daisy greens. I guess they are quite popular in some countries.

If people had to live off the land, I bet they would lose the excess baggage in a hurry. No need to go to the gym with all the bending, picking, hunting, and gathering.

I finally ordered a book I've been wanting to get, one of them anyway, off Amazon today. Nature's Garden by Samuel Thayer. It's supposed to be pretty good.

The thing is, and this may sound nutty now, but there are talks of global food shortages possible in the future, hybrid seeds and GMO crops developing problems, etc. etc. I think it's a really good idea, even if someone doesn't want to or need to eat wild foods now to at least familiarize themselves with wild foods in their area (unless of course they are in the city).. Maybe get a few field guides. If the internet goes down or power goes out, it may not be so easy to look things up in the future. People can have an abundance of food on their property and not even know it. We used to live off the land. :)

People can just stick to the more obvious ones and do a spore print for good measure. Take the cap of the shroomie and set it on a piece of paper overnight or for several hours, and it will leave a print and show the color of the spores. :)

Wow, that is a world of information. I love the portion on mushrooms and the other on the edible herbs and flowers. I have a boat load of mountain mint.

I love eating mushrooms, but have always been too much of a scaredy cat to try and pick them myself. My luck I would only pick the poisonous ones. My hubby refuses to eat "fungus". Course he also won't eat anything found in water either. I have stretched his eating habits a lot over the years, but Mr. finicky still has a long ways to go.

Here are a few web sites I've used. When I'm trying something I didn't know was edible before, I check at least a couple of sites on it to make sure and look at different photos.
