The weather here is really nice and we are in a drought side of the weather pattern that comes out of the Pacific. We either have an El Nino or La Nina but right now no one is sure what is happening.. We had a cold and stormy Nov, Dec then no rain Jan Feb March..
until Last weekend when we had a storm come through .... this makes the skiers happy and adds to the snow pack that melts all summer and supplies the water to the central valley of California and LA.

I put some pumpkin seeds in the ground... we had a thunder storm last evening so there was a thorough soaking... need to plant the rest of my onion sets.

I just did that with a few for the BOB. :) When I plant seeds, I just put them in starter pots or put them directly in the ground.

I use two paper towels( but you could just use newspaper) and just wet them.. no glue and they stick together and just tear apart to plant the seeds.... great tip!!! did I get it from you last year?

Great idea! I'm surprised the glue doesn't hurt them. Guess you'll know for sure if you produce tastes like Elmer's hoof.

I thought it might be a nice idear to put a couple seeds (heirloom) of different kinds in my bug out bag as an extra little stash. I wanted to still label them but not have to use little bags or something for just a couple of a lot of different kinds of seeds. Then, I remembered seeing a tip on Pinterest how you can make seed strips for planting using newspaper strips and Elmer's glue, so I used that idea. :) You can still write what they are on the strips and just rip it into sections when you want to use them and plant them with the paper.

I guess I will finally make the solar heater that I have been talking about.
Paint the inside of a box black and line out side with foil.. then another box inside with newspaper or cardboard filler... Put the food in and it is a summer slow cooker.

Gallon can...rubbing alcohol....roll of toilet paper...together they make a nice little heat stove

when lit, it burns for a very long time, puts off a lot of heat, and you can even warm up food over it.

I got the Firesteel in the mail today. It works great. It puts off nice sparks for starting fires.

I have learned to tune noises like that out. I don't even notice them...conditioning after all the years of teaching in which NONE of the bells apply to my schedule or class.

Ours have all 4 paws declawed, so they stay in at all times. It started when we had all Siamese, which would be stolen if let out. Then as others joined them, it gave them an unfair advantage, so clip clip.

I find rubber gloves are the best thing for cleaning up cat hair, especially off furniture...done in seconds.

I used to listen to CarTalk, I have not heard it in awhile.

I have a BOB for hubby in his car, in case he gets stranded in the snow, because he has an hour and half drive to and from work. He likes nuts, so I have nuts in his bag for him with his water and some bandages and such. This time of year, the nuts keep pretty well because it is colder. I have some of those hand warmers packs that he can out in his gloves or boots in case he slips off the road, I found them in the hunting section of the store.

The rest of the family is here at home, because we will bug in if something happens because we have a good place to stay protected here.

I have a pack of cards in my BOB. lol Puzzle books would be nice too. Also, I have a note pad and pen. I try to put everything in plastic bags too. Can never have too many and they keep things from getting wet.

You may want to get familiar with evacuation routes and shelters in your area. In any case, it would be good to have some food in there that stores well. If a major disaster happens, in all the confusion, you might not eat for a few days if you don't have something with you. Maybe a mylar blanket for each member of the family. They are flimsly but they are supposed to help relfect heat back to your body and they are small and lightweight. The astronaught people came up with Mylar blankets. lol I bought some cheap on e-bay. Actually, I bought this one "kit" for just $11.00 that has an emergency mylar sleeping bag, mylar blanket, and mylar tent. It helps keep you dry too if you are out in the wilderness. I think it's a good idea to make a list of "grab" things. Things that you need every day so can't pack away in your bug out bag but want to take with you in an emergency.

I know I should be prepared but all I have is some water bottles and my gym clothes in the trunk of my car. I know where my meds are and can grab them but do you bring your bank stuff? something to read? something to sleep on or in? and where do you take it to?
We have had times like last year when the Pacific Gas and Electric gas lines burst and every one in a two mile radius got evacuated. With no prep time... So I know it can happen. There was a plume of smoke from the gas seeping out and burning...

Bags are so personal....
what's in mine, is not necessarily what's in my husband's.
what's in the house is not the same as what's in the car, etc

I do feel like I'm constantly re-assessing each type of bag based on newly gained knowledge or experiences. My current bag looks nothing like the first one I ever put together.

At a minimum:
things to help me get out or get home
shoes and socks - in case I have to walk (and wore heels that day)
food/water/first aid
flashlight/candles/matches
self protection - knife or etc

I had found a generic list online and used that to start with and filled the bags with those items. I have been rotating my food, I like to rotate my bags in April and in October because it coincides with a semi-annual conference that I attend every year so it is easier to remember. My unique Item... well besides personal medicines, I think it would be a family photo, pre-addressed stamped postcards with my emergency contacts info on it and a CD backup of my genealogy files.
Yes I have bags for my kids. How do I get them involved? I would make the kids race and grab their kits, open it and put on the clothes from their kits. That was pretty funny because they had gone through growth spurts that meant the clothes in the kits didn't exactly fit well anymore.
My bag I could carry for awhile. I wouldn't be happy about it and I wouldn't be going fast but I could do it. My bag doesn't roll.

So what is in yours?
Do you rotate your food in your bag?
Do you have something unique that other (like me) people might not have thought of?
Do you have bags for your kids?
