Yesterday I was off and it was sunny after having a week of rain and dark dreary days that reminded me of fall not spring.. Noni and I took a drive to Vancacover with our bikes attached to the bike rack so we could do some cycling around the Sewawall. I think a few other thousand people had the same idea. Yes it was a little crowded but there was lots of room to move about.

Seen some birds also

and some flowers

It was a good day.

Inspection is over...phew.... I have yet to see the final report, however she said she seen no major violations. That is good. We have a couple of things that need tweeting, nothing of real consequence. I need to buy a cooling wand to cool my soups and sauces quicker, a brighter light in the fridge, raise a shelf higher off the floor, and for me to buy more storage containers to keep mice from contaminating cake pans and slicer. I walked her around and described how we serve - she looked over my menu - I told her he two most high risk items I bring in are the turkeys and chicken and in doing so I told her how I thaw them and store in fridge.
Thinking about it - we actually are a safe kitchen, as Noni told her we eat here too so we are not going to do anything that would cause us not to want to enjoy our meals.

For lunch I served Chinease food - processed - sweet and sour pork, chicken In a sauce, spring rolls, fried rice, stir fried Vegetables (fresh) and a soup.

Supper I am serving beef ribs, chicken breasts, corn on cob, friend rice and home made buns and a salad

The sun is out, it is about 15c and I am relaxing finally.

This morning we went to the condo picked up our extra matteress with a another staff member then back to camp. Tonight we should sleep well with this matteress.
In the mean time I am going to sit outside with Dalhouise and watch the robins and hummingbirds.

Tomorrow the plan is to go to church, then go visit Mom and hopefully take her out for supper.
But right now I must be still, relax, and not think about what I am going to do next.

My week has ended.. Feeding 161 people- they sure ate a lot. We never got ahead of the on slaught of hungry campers. Our salad bar of over 30 choices was emptied every lunch - normally it last for the next day as well - and of course we make fresh every three days... But not this week they ate everything every lunch time. My soup was eaten every day as well and I made much more than normally required - which is a good thing and the home made bread gobbled down every supper with no left overs.. The quantity was good - these guess we're a little older than our normal and it was cold so this made people more hungry. Besides that they were very active outside all day doing camp things.
Noni and I are exhausted. My day began mostly around 650 and bed again between 2030 and 2130 hr hours. I also had to deal with the bad matteress as well... I was sucking back, back pain medicine, that took away the pain but made me drowsy. No afternoon breaks like I would normally take but straight 12 hours shifts or longer..
But the week is over now... I have the weekend off.. Well not all.. I need to do some work on Sunday to make sure we are ready for health inspection Monday morning.. A few little tweets need to be taken care of before I can feel comfortable facing this inspection.

If it does not rain I hope to bring our mattress from the condo to the cabin tomorrow ...

But for now I am off and can try to relax...

Ike's .... 161 guess are coming for supper, and staying for breakfast and lunch for the next five days. It is an international group of some kind - new to our camp.
As I look around we are looking pretty good - we are set to go..
Reality for my new dishwashing girls.. Now is the time to develop a routine and listen carefully to the procedures and systems I have been telling them about. It is so hard to teach during staff training as nothing is routine - we cleaned and cleaned the kitchen area / dishpitt area to get it serviceable .. But this afternoon the whys all come into place and hopefully they will understand.
Two very different girls.. One very clever on the ball - the other - well let's just say I think a few cards are missing out of the deck ....
Or is it that parents just failed to teach plain common sense... Can I help / teach this young lady?
Example - I reminder that she needs to fill the sugar container at the coffee station - white normal sugar.. She goes and fills the container with icing sugar...
There has been more of these little funnies with other simple common sense things ..
Oh well she is friendly and seemly happy right now..

Camp days.. Well the dishwasher is up and running properly. The pot sink is in working order.
My two new dishwasher people seemly are doing well.
The kitchen sink has stopped leaking.. I think I plugged it with dirt when cleaning the ovens.
I did my first official meal last night - chicken cordon blue - wild rice - fresh asparagus with a cheese sauce. And for dessert chocolate chip banana cake. Later for snack we served cookies, a cheese tray, vegi tray.
My day began at 7:30 am and I went home at 8 pm and then... Spent two hours doing my food order on the computer. Longer than normal because most of the history from last year was wiped out and I had to search for things I wanted.
Today I called the rep to order the few things I could not find.. Deliver is tomorrow..

Bed .... You might not believe this but it is true.. I went to the kitchen .. We had a couple of extra metal shelving - so I brought them home to the cabin and lifted the matteress ... Placing between the box spring and matteress went the two metal shelves.
I find it a little hard .. Noni loves it. Our sore backs however seem to be fixed with this solution.

No heat in the lounge ... It is very cold in the evenings and morning for breakfast. Our heater I saw was loaded into the camp truck and taken to the city. Should be back in a few days. I am glad I stay in the kitchen.

Next week we have a new food inspector coming.. .. Inspection - a new inspector I wonder how strict she is going to be.. We are a pretty ruget establishment - I'll be ready as the best we can be...

This day is a new day.
Eco lab has been here and we are up and running.
Heater guy is here for the last 2 hours working on the heater
Stove guy came here to work on pot sink - not my stove - came and left --- camp maintence guy is working on plumbing issues
Pot sink should be working this afternoon - I think I heard that stuff had to dry before he could do more to the pot sinks.. All I know is that I see him in the bathrooms right now.
Slowly we keep moving forward
A good thing my tea order has arrived tat I ordered just before Mexico..

The owner is here and frustrated too

Today surprised surprise - the plumber showed up, the heater guy showed up, the dishwasher Eco lab person showed up and our fridge / stove maintenance man showed up... You are thinking wonderful everything is now fixed and ready to go -- Right!
Wrong.. I can't believe it.. Nothing is working. Nothing is fixed. They all must come back with parts of this or that so things can work.
We have no heat in the lounge
We have no water to the pot sinks or to the main bathrooms
I only have use of two ovens
The dishwasher is not fully functional and none of our new chemical dispensers are working.
Tomorrow I cook the first official meal for the staff.. Staff training begins.
25 people for the week a week lateral have 161 arriving for the week ..
I sure hope everyone comes back to get us up and running soon.

Waking up with sore backs my wife and I. The bed mattress is horrid. I am thinking about placing it on the floor direct get it off the old the old metal frame. Do you think this will help?
Should we use the box spring?

He was suppose to be here on Friday.
Official meal is Tuesday night when all program staff arrive to camp..

Look what came in my mailbox this day. My lady friend from Ontario sent me a book "Life on Earth by David Attenborough". What I find interesting is that just last night I watched a documentary about said author.. Showing the history of film and wildlife photography from the beginning till now. But look at the envelope.. So many stamps. She had asked the post office to put as many on as possible..
Also I recieved a postcard from her that she bought 40 years ago and was tucked away In a old cookbook from Banff Alberta.
Then I have a postcard from Amsterdam from Mike?

Now my mailbox will have to wait till next Thursday before I can check it again. I think I will be pleasantly pleased when I get home and open it.

The bags are almost packed and zipped. This time tomorrow morning 1015 we will be in the air on our way to Mexico. With all the crashes these last 6 months my anxiety of flying has gone up a notch.. However I keep assuring my self - whether in life or death I will be with the Lord... But still I struggle with inner stress... But I really want to go to Mexico.
Dalhouise today wow...he really gave me a hard time as I tried to squirt his medicine in his mouth. Giving him his pills are easy just hide it in a treat, but the syringe is a different storey. Growling, squirming, running away the chase - the calming words and the trying all over again.. Finally I am able to get his mouth open enough to squirt -- done. Tomorrow good luck with the sitter giving hm his last dose. They asked me if it was hard or easy -'I said easy - it was honestly until this morning.. We talked about her two year old who hates the squirt and it is a struggle every day giving him his.. Tomorrow she will have to,deal with two babies... Good luck.
Dalhouse now see two, suitcases - we can't hide it any more - he knows..
- my stress about flying is over riding my stress about leaving him.. Gotta think about the beaches - the new adventures - the food ... Stop Watching the News

Dalhouise sure does look sad and sore. He wobbled out of the clinic like a drunken sailor walking along the wooden boardwalk back to his ship on a Saturday night.
I wanted him to have his needles up to date and that spot on his left hind leg that is still bleeding looked at before I took him to the sitters on Tuesday. Well during the examinanation it was clear even to me that he had a tooth infection that had to be dealt with.. This past month I could tell something was wrong - and there is No way possible he knew we are going away. I only took out the suitcase on Friday so that he wouldn't know it... Well he was coming to me wanting to be hugged. - sit on my lap - hitting me with his paw so I would cuddle him and pet him. He wanted me to make him feel better...
The doctor said he would almost immediately feel relief after the tooth was pulled because it was that badly infected - he actually pulled two.. I was told.
The old age lumps - I don't know what they really are - they were refered as that so - that is what I call them were removed as well. One on his mid back near tail and on his left hind leg.
Dalhouise kept biting the one on his leg and it was always bleeding. I was concer about infections after he swims in muddy ponds / creeks or when he gets rolling around in the dirt. Camp life is paradise for a health dog. Dalhouse is turning 13 on his birthday and he is a very healthy - young at heart dog for his age.. All those kids coming to camp must keep him that way..
I am happy to say as I close - this morning he is looking alittle more chipper.

( send him a get well postcard:)

Not a lot of hking done today. walked around the park with Dalhouise. Walked to the plaza and back again pushing a little cart.. I had to go buy a new car battery. When I came back from our bike adventure in Surrey I accidentally left the dome light on and so the next day I had a very dead battery. I called the motor club and got a boost.. Dave around for an hour and let the car idle for about half an hour.. Turned it off and went to bed. Next day I go try to start the car it is a no go.. Battery is dead again. I had inklings that it was going before and I think this was the last straw with the dome light left on. Thus the walk to go buy a new battery.. Once I got the batter home the plumber was just about to leave from doing a job here on site.. ( do you remember my last month plumbing bills) well I asked him if he would help me change the battery as I don't have tools.. He agreed - nice guy...
The car works now and so we drove got some groceries and I bought a new hand held GPS.
Remember my GPS died when I tried to turn it on on the bike trip to Surrey. I need to have a GPS for Mexico in five days from now..
I didn't buy a better one - same brand and company as the one I had because it was on sale. Discontinued .. So I got it for 89 dollars.. Regular I see was 199.$. I just didn't want to spend so much money right now. Need it for our vacation and property taxes and ultiities tax coming due in the nex 60 days.
Hopefully it will work ok for a year or so..

Thank you..
Yesterday I walked Dalhouise in the morning around the pond for a hour.

Came home ate lunch and drove to Surrey/ Cloverdale area to bicycle 11 miles around the area waiting for our friends to get off work.

They invited us to join them for supper at the fish and chips restaurant. I thought the area was flat.. Boy I was wrong.. Up hill we peddled and down hill we flew over and over.

Luck was on our side... It didn't rain. We had slight winds and sunny conditions with overcast moments. We rode all around the place exploring dead end streets and nooks and crannies...
In the morning I loaded my GPS - I planned to geocache as we cycled. When I arrived and turned my device on - it did not. I changed the batteries - still nothing - it is dead. I have been having issues with it - having to keep hitting the reset button.. Now even that does not work.
So NO geocaching done today.. That almost changed my mood - but on top the hill looking over towards the route I was about to go I see a spot I exspect to see birds - I didn't see what I thought I would but I was hopeful and once I began riding that was enough happiness

Today I feel like I accomplished something .. Checking the bank account early I found to my delight that the income tax refund was in.. Hurray... So I was able to pay off the visa and put some money in our RRSP s for next year tax breaks and some into our savings... Then I went and did some banking for my mother at the bank and while I was there I put some money into one of my account to pay for my life insurance policy that is due in April. Next it was a stop at Service Canada to print out the application for my wife's permanent resident card that is due this year and then over to Walmart to get pictures for this application. Did a stop at the drug store to get a copy of Mom's prescriptions tax report receipt and then a drive to the accountants office so that Mom can get her taxes done. Earlier in the day I collectd all her receipts and papers. Now it is out of my hands - hers is more complicated than mine and so I did not want to make mistakes.
I walked Dalhouise to the post office where I mailed a couple of postcards and bought some stamps and postcards already stamped so that I can mail more. (Hint)

The rain has startd here.. It was nice while it lasted - sunny weather..
Last night out of character for Noni and I - we met with camp staff to eat out tougher. We met at an Indian restaurant. I have been wanting to check it out for a few years but Noni has always refused as she said she was not too fawn about this style of food.. Well finally we went. She ate her portions.. I ate my fill. I thonk I will take my mom here at some point in the not to far future. The price is average - it cost me fifty dollars for the two of us.. However I am not minding it so much as I did enjoy eating goat curry stew... Rice, Nana bread, lamb k bob, and chicken k bob, and noni had chicken curry. With that I washed it all down with chai tea made with milk.
Talking and listening to the camp younger staff... It was good .. I think we are going to start the year off on a good right foot.. We have a temporary new office girl too and hopefully this will help us start well together - as the office staff and I some times have these little major conflicts. It was a good time of fellowship - and I was able to make them laugh a coule of times by being just me.. I am a strange one at times - I am old enough to be their fathers.. Noni their mothers.

My body is still sore a day after the scrubbing of the kitchen. I cleaned everything including the ceilings, walls and all table surfaces and shelving.
The hardest part now is knowing I have to go back in and reclean it all before I actually start cooking and serving.
Dalhouise is away at the groomers.. I took him out for an early morning walk and then dropped him off. He was so sad and tried to dart out the door escaping from the hug of the groomer when I approached the door. Poor little guy.. He knows..
Now I am home and the house is so empty without him.. I miss him .. Crazy eh!

After dropping Dalhouse off I walked downtown Squamish to the secondhand flea market. I went in and asked if they had any postcards.. The man behind the counter said maybe and pulled out a bundle over four inches high. What I could see - the date of some postage stamps are 1926
I ask how much.. He was not sure.. We browsed through them and he said I could have them all for 25 dollars - I said I have a twenty .. He said OK and I walked out with a bundle of older postcards..
Not sure yet haven't done due dillgence ... But one quick view on Google is that one set is worth 15 dollars alone. And I have several.. So I may have lucked out big time... Regardless I am happy with my growing collection.

Going to work.. I havent said that in awhile. But tomorrow morning I must wake up and get ready to go to work. Over the winter the kitchen has grown a covering of mould to keep warm I guess. So before the fire inspector comes in, before the maintence man can come in and repair broken pipes, before the fridge maintence company comes in to do a cleaning -- I must come in and remove the mould..
Wonderful...
Today I went and bought a safety mask because I am going to wash the kitchen with bleach..
I have a solid day of scrubbing to do.. I am going to be so tired tomorrow night...

Made time ths day to take car inor the service center for the spring semi annual maintence and winter tires removal.. Shopping for the supplies to cook Mac and cheese for fifty people at church Sunday and to go for a two and half hour bike ride and a visit with Mom. I guess it was a successful day... I even BBQ supper for Noni and I. I did some birding while riding our bikes and came across this unknown duck.. It looks like a Mallard hybrid cross with either a Green wing Teal or Wigeon..

supper BBQ

almost got stopped

spring is here

must not forget winter

Dalhouise next week goes to the groomers

Time ... I had so much of it that it seemly stood still. Now the days are beginning to go faster and faster. Yes there is a bump in the race track.. My trip to Mexico can't come fast enough.
However last night I did my taxes for 2014 - been putting it off ... but last night I filed them.
Last week I had my eye appointment and this week picked up my new glasses.
Today I made the appointment at the garage to have my car receive it's semi annual maintence done and snow tires taken off. Next week Dalhouise will be going to the groomers.
Before the end of the month I need to take Mom to Vancouver....
Once work begins I won't have many opportunities during the day to get away from work. I need to cook breakfast, lunch, supper..
So as we put all our ducks in their row.... there are so many little things that need to be done before we move from thenCondo to the little cabin in the woods and Work.

I think the purchase of the bike rack might be my best decision in a long time. It is easy to put on and take off the car. More importantly is the fact that it is extremely easy to load the bikes onto it and off.
As I drove down the highway I kept an eye in the rear view mirror making sure the bikes were still with us. Stress.. But no need to be fretting about that.. When we arrived at our designation about 43 miles from home.... All was well - fastened just as I left home.

The day was cold and overcast, but there were no uphills to deal with. Yesterday's ride was more up than down and Noni did not like it at all - I was not too happy either but I took it in stride figuring I was burning more calories going up. However it sure was pleasant driving along flat dikes and seeing the sights.

This day was suppose to be sunny and 17c ... I don't know what happened because it was cold and overcasted and slightly windy. The good thing was I was dressed for it.. I was chided by my wife when we left home from Squamish, that I was overly dressed.. I proved to be the one warm and cozy as we biked today in Steveston. I have been wanting to do this now for a few years and with our new bike rack - this was the day to do so with the false pretences of a hot sunny day getting me going. Of course I had the GPS - I get to geocache and bike and do some birding all in the same day... Can life get any better? I ask myself.
The only thing that made it better.. I actually found some caches, and seen some birds and the riding was not all uphills. Life is so good.

So I bought the bike rack but so far it remains inside my car. But that is ok because I did go for a hour walk with the Dalhouise and then this afternoon went biking riding with my wife for two hours. Man there is a lot of up hills compared to the down hills.
In the sun it was very warm - but the shaded areas sure were cooler.. Should I wear my jacket or not... One moment I was too hot then I was chilled to the core. For awhile I took off my outer heavy jacket and tried to pedal to keep warm but that wind.
Oh that wind howled in my ears... Litteraly howling so loud .. and cold on my chest and stomach.. So back on went my jacket - and it felt so warm and cozy.

The sun is shining brightly yesterday and today..
I did cook a breakfast for 30 men on Saturday but only half actually showed up.. So I had lots of left over food that was given away to one of the families that need some extra help..
I was teased about serving the quiche - you know real men don't eat quiche ...
Then I came home and slept two and half hours... I really was not feeling well .. And so once more I lost a sunny bright day.. I manage a short walk with Dalhouise ... Noni took him out earlier in the morning for a long walk..
Today I woke up before the set alarm .. With the time change I wanted to make sure I was not late for church.. Walked Dalhouise then managed to get to church on time.. I think many others did not make the time change as we had a lot of free space today.
Now I am in the process of deciding what to do this afternoon.. I am hoping for a bike ride..
But I am still feeling slightly out of sorts.. But I don't want to waste this afternoon.

What happened to yesterday? I don't know.. I did go,for a Dalhouise walk, I went to my appointment to the eye doctor for my annual four year check.. Yes I was scolded for that he wants to see me every two years. I went now because I know I needed new reading glasses..no choice. Then the day was gone..
Today I have plans to go to Vancouver .. I was asked by my employer to go pick up at the kitchen supply place the new sink and tables he ordered. My kitchen is getting a face lift.. Hurray! Since I want to get some new pots and other trinkets, I will gladly go especially since he is paying for the gas and items..
I will also stop in at one of the supper stores to buy some food for the men's breakfast I was asked to cook for. I have said no on a couple of occasions ... But the man who was going to do it made other plans and backed out after the church organized this function ... So in desperation they asked me to help -- what can I do? I said yes.. And so now I must shop and prepare this meal. Tomorrow about thirty men will be coming - that is not so bad - but the churches kitchen sucks... That makes it difficult to cook..
I have decided to cook and serve .. Oatmeal - bacon - sausage - hashbrowns - Eggs probably scrambled and pancakes. My wife will make cinnamon buns for me to bring later today.

I need to get ready - gotta go to camp to pick up the camp van as my car is too small for the new tables and sink.. I will bring Dalhouise with me so he can run a it before I bring him back home and pick up Noni. Then into the big city we go..
Have a good day everyone.

I was surprised when my wife got dressed and was ready to go walking with me this morning.
Normally I walk alone with Dalhouise around ten.
Well today the three of us went hiking together. Cool at first but soon we boh were unzipping as we warmed up walking in bright sunshine.

The scenery was pretty amazing.
Bird sightings were alittle scarce but still rewarding..

Today the family - Noni and Dalhouise and I went shopping in Vancouver, eating at our now not favorite restaurant and then hiking with a mission to locate a geocache. Lighthouse Park - a beautiful place but our hearts were going thump thump, thump .. Up up up the trail went, then we took this other path that was not a main trail but the GPS said to go that way.. It was up and over bare rock where both Noni and Dalhouise slipped.. Then we had to go down this slippery steep path that almost didn't seem even like a trail.. Eventually we came upon a large trail .. We walked on giving up the idea of finding a cache as the distance now was indicating further away, and we were not going to turn back I that route we just came from. Just hiked on enjoying the sun and wilderness until we came to the shoreline of the coast.
I have been here before so I knew where we had to go to get back to the car ... Off we go.
Once we arrived at the paring lot I give Noni the keys and tell her to rest with Dalhouise as I wanted to go look for this cache one more time. I move at a fast pace back to the General location of cache where we had became disoriented ... I stop to catch my breath... And the GPS begins to settle down - I am about ten feet from it. I look high and low and zap there it is.

It was a good day

Who am I what do I do?

We work at a children's camp. Spring and fall we have school groups come to learn team work and bonding or year end field trip. Summer is straight fun summer camp activities. I am in charge of managing the kitchen the owner just wants to come and eat and pay the bills everything else is left to me. I plan the menu - order supplies - keep a record of stock - cook all soups, sauces, entrees and also prepare and cook all special need menu items such as vegitarian, gluten free, egg and dairy free special needs..
My wife does all the baking and prepares food for a 30 - 40 item salad bar every lunch. I also help her with prep for this too
We make 90% of all our food from scratch.
We have home made bread every day - home made soup every lunch.
Ths sounds like a lot? It is... But we do it for six months with a few days off here and there. I am good at multi taskng but I do become grumpy as I tire out. However it is very satisfing to me to see happy faces eat my food.
We cook roast beef, Turkey, chicken, ham dishes.. Tacos, Mac and cheese ( not Kraft dinner but the real thing) we have a BBQ meal, grilled cheese with tomato soup, chicken fingers ( processed) you get the idea.
I make soup from the stock of the beef or chicken turkey meals and gravy all fresh.
If you are serving beef gotta have some Yorkshire pudding.. Yes I do that too and this is for children ...
I love my job other wise I would not be doing it ... But I get so tired by the end of next fall.

Living where I do - on the west coast of main land BC this month will usher in Spring - we are always a month ahead of the eastern provinces.. I think...
Today after church and a short visit with Mom I came home and napped for two hours.. I must had been real tired.

Yesterday I finally went to the George Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary in Delta BC. It was a fabulous day birding. The drive getting to it was not the most pleasant but all was forgotten in the joy of seeing so many birds, including three lifers.
I went hoping to see the Sandhill Crane, ( I did) but I also saw the Great Horned Owl and the Black crowned Heron.. Just amazing. My listed bird seen for the day ---- Trumpter Swans, American Coots, American Widgeons, Northern Pintails, Rock Doves, Euraisan Doves, Robins, Starlings, Canada Geese, Mallard Ducks, Spotted Towhees, Song Sparrows, Fox Sparrows, Black capped Chickadees, Red wing Blackbirds, Great Blue Heron, Northern Shovelers, Wood Ducks, Hooded Mergansers , Common Mergansers, Buffleheads, Golden crown Kinglets, Anna Hummingbirds, Cooper Hawk, Bald Eagles, and Greater and Lesser Scaups.
I think that includes my list of the day - like I said it was a fabulous day.

I contacted my friend who has been posting pictures of the Great Gray Owl. At first he was hesitant of telling me where.. Must have felt guilty because he called me late last night and gave good directions of where he has been seeing it. I wake up several times in the night with anticipation because of this new information. Up at six am - I am out the door just before seven and on the trail by 0710 hr hours. I walk with much hope building and failing as I begin to think I won't see it. I turn my head and there it is... I get two quick pictures before it flies away.. I am so pleased, so full of joy.... I seen it, that is all I needed and a picture as proof.
Later in the morning when walking with my wife we seen it again and Once again I was able to quickly snap a few more photos. I am a happy happy camper...

Out the door to drive to the Estuary.. I have heard reports that a Great Grey Owl has been spotted in the area. People are being careful not to mention the exact spot.. So I went hiking at dusk last night two trails and then this morning I went out again and rehiked the two and another one. The last trail looked more promising with many ever green trees. No luck..
Nevertheless I enjoyed the hike.
It is a strange feeling last night walking in the woods in darkness. Oh the thoughts of bears, cougars, wolves and other things that go bump in the night..... That entered my mind..
Then I began thinking about the people who are about to through hike the PCT trail or the Appalachian trail. Months of wandering in the wilds - that would be scary..

Spent several hours walking and sitting in Vancouver. Chinese New Year parade brought us to the big city and then we walked around afterwards looking and investigating different markets. Who needs to travel thousands of miles to get a taste of China when it is right in your backyard. On the other hand... This is only a taste of the real thing thousands of miles away - just wetting the appetite - a tease. Hmmmm I wonder if a future vacation to China should be in the making or not.

I should had gone for the car ride to Vancouver or Whistler! If saving money was the goal.
We went for our bike ride but that did not prevent a stop to do some shopping... Our tires were a little low so I stopped at them community center that has a little bike repair corner to pump up our deflated tires. The pump was broken - more air went out of the tire than what went in. Still enough to ride further to where we bought them last year... So off we ride tomthen bike shop.
As quick as you can say one two three I have purchased Noni a nice new pink basket, an odometer and a new U lock. Leaving the store 30 minutes later I was two hundred dollars less.
Ouch...
From there we can continued to ride around the village - over and around to the beach area and then eventually back home. From the reading of the new odometer IT said 13.5 km.
I estimate between three and four Km to the bike shop from our place. So this would be about 18 k in total. 10 miles.roughly.

I have been out for a walk this morning with a couple of friends, now I have to decide what to do this afternoon. It is sunny and warm. I see effects of wind blowing the tree branches and long grass growing in my flower pots - so I am debating whether or not I should go for a bike ride. Noni wants to get out of the house.. I could drive to Whistler or Vancouver but this will cost gas money and most likely money spent shopping as well. I want to save some money so I don't particuly want to do either of those last two options. Noni is pasting around the house so I know she is very bored.
So I thnk it will be a bike ride.. After all it is sunny and warm - the rains will be coming back too soon..

13 February .. The Great Backyard Bird Count has begun.
So since I am supposed to go count birds I need to see them..
I began counting from my Condo armchair
4 Stellar Jays, 2 Black capped Chickadees, 5 Darkeyed Juncos, 1 Song Sparrow, 5 House Finches, 4 Chestnut backed Chickadees

Then when I walked the Dalhouise I observed - 1 Northern Flicker, 2 Spotted Towhees,
9 Mallard Ducks, 1 Common Merganser, 5 Bald Eagles, 18 Canada Geese

Then I returned home ate lunch, became bored watching TV so I went out again to visit the estuary, hoping to see more birds.
I seen - 21 Common Mergansers, 9 Buffleheads, 1 Double Crested Cormorant, 5 Mallard Ducks, 1 Great Blue Heron, 7 Canada Geese, 8 Chestnut backed Chickadees, 2 Golden crown Kinglets - and on the way home my old friend the Northern Pygmy Owl was waiting by the side of the road perched in his tree branches looking for something to eat.
Not bad for day one...

Besides all that I hung up,at the Condo a humming bird feeder and a Niger seed sock feeder ... Let's see if any new birds come to check it out..

I just came home from the public library 2000 hr hours.. At 1800 hr hours was the start of a talk of a man who has cycled five continents. I was impressed with his slide presentation. He talked constantly ... My butt became a little restless, but nevertheless it was a good talk. I went to his Facebook page when I came home .. Garth Rides for hope
I am encouraged to get out on my bike more..

Cabin Fever... Finally this depressing winter time feeling is upon my wife and I. We have a vacation planned for the first week of April but that is a long time away.
We are sitting in our chairs bored.. TV is boring, Noni is getting bored watching her YouTube videos on baking.. I get out for walks but I don't stay out all day.. Maybe is ought to stay out longer... But that is selfish.. Noni is at home bored...
Camp our employment start up date is mid April ... Then we will be longing for time off...
Our funds are low right now.. Otherwise I would plan a Road Trip. .. Might go on one regardless because we are bored.

I took Dalhouise for his walk around 0930 for 65 minutes at the pond in the rain.. I must had been funny looking with camera and binoculars hanging around my neck with a Hugh bright umbrella keeping the steady rain off of me -- and my Dalhouise in his bright red rain coat on as well.. Anyways I recorded in my field note book ..
A Great Blue Heron, a Belted Kingfisher, two American Dippers, a flock of Mallards ducks about six of them, two Hooded Mergansers and two immature Common Goldeneyes ..
I heard a Bald Eagle but could not spot it ..

So that is my day in the rain..

I checked out a link on the web that was dedicated to identify birds and bird song. I listened to several bird songs and my dog went crazy. First time I played it he was sleeping on the footstool and he sat up and stepped on me to see where the sound was coming from - so I played it again and he stuck his nose next to the speakers of my IPad.
A few times doing this he hops on the floor and looks under my chair ... Then I stopped - it is too early to tease Dalhouise.

Coming from Ontario - I agree seeing the first Robins always to me meant that Spring was not far behind.. Here in BC this does not hold the same truth as I think we are in forever Spring.
However to see more and more lately indicates that Spring is basically upon us.

The weekend is over. It is Groundhog Day. I woke up and I am alive so it is a good day.
I have a warm home, a full stomach and more than enough clothing to choose from to wear.
I have had my coffee and my dog is laying at my feet. To add the cherry on top of my cake my wife is preparing breakfast.. Man life is good this day.

Yesterday was a success - great time spent with friends, ate a small portion of fish and chips instead of the normal Hugh portion, and I found one geocache container.

Went outside to walk Dalhouise and seen an American Robin near the entrance door.
We continued to hike around the " Pond" where I heard an Bald Eagle but could not spot it. I think it is on the other side of the highway. But I did see a Crow, Great Blue Heron, a Belted Kingfisher, an American Dipper. And a pair of Common Mergansers, ( F/M)
Walk was from 1005 to 1145

The plan today is to drive to Surrey / Cloverdale to visit a couple of friends and to eat at our favourite fish and chip restaurant Salty's. I have loaded new geocaches into my hand held GPS. I don't have much confidence that I will actually find any but I am hopeful. I think we will bring the Dalhouise dog with us today...

Oh what a day it was.. I am so thankful I moved from Ontario to BC. We - my wife and I went on a hike, my blog says it all.. But to post on my team page I will limit and reshare.
A two hour hike became a five hour hike ending in sore feet and physical exhaustion but feeling good.
Why am I so thankful - I don't remember too many hikes in a light sweater nor picnics in January along any unfrozen snow covered lakes.
How did a two hour hike become a five hour hike... I blame it on geocaching..

The day ended with my wife holding hands, and still talking to me.. That makes for a good day in my books

Bird sightings 28 January
Condo feeder....
0748 One Song Sparrow
0759. Three stellar Jays
- nothing else came so at 0830 to 0915 I walked Dalhouise around the "pond"
Seen..
Bald Eagles 2
Mallard Ducks 4
American Dipper 1
Great Blue Heron 1
Belted Kingfisher 1

Then it was time to drive to Burnaby Lake and feed the birds there - I have not yet made a list of these.. I need to look at my photos and identify correctly
But there are many to add to my days listing in my field notebook

Just to name a few birds -
Buffleheads ducks, Mallard Ducks, Green wing teals, Common Merganser, Hooded Merganser, Greater Scaup, Red Wing Blackbirds, Black-cap Chickadee, Dark-eyed Junco's and Rock Pigeons.

This morning it looked overcast, grey, not so inviting to go out hiking.. So made the decision not to hike the 10 km trail around Burnaby Lake. Maybe tomorrow, Noni wants to come too.. But we will leave the Dalhouise home.. That is the plan ...
So today it was a walk to Willow Park, and around the bloc, with Dalhousie who seems to be still suffering from yesterday's long walk. After the walk leaving Dalhouise home - it was Noni and my first swim of the year in the local swimming pool. Now my arms are a little sore but I do notice ... I seem to have a spring in my step - I have more energy each day... I don't have this at the end of the day.. It is exhaustion by the time I get in bed and fall asleep when my head hits the pillow

I sure was off, the couch yesterday. I went for a 90 minute walk with Dalhouise the dog and then in the afternoon it was a three hour bike ride that included geocaching. Unfortunately I could not find the cache. Neither could the person before me either so I assume that the coordinate are off - it is a new cache.
Once again seen Bald Eagles, Mallard Ducks, Mergansers, and the Pygmy Owl.
It was a beautiful sunny day, warm and comfortable.. I even took off the long johns ...

Another post about a Field notebook, that I found while researching

BACKYARD NATURE HOME | PLANTS | ANIMALS | FUNGI | ECOLOGY | GEOLOGY | GARDENING | TOOLS

KEEPING NATURE NOTES:
YOUR NATURE JOURNAL
Let me show you something...
I've just risen from my computer, walked across the room to my library, and taken out an old, black, vinyl-covered, three-inch-thick, three-ringed binder from way back in my school days. It must contain a thousand pages of loose-leaf binder paper of the kind highschool students use. Groups of pages are separated by stiff boards with colorful plastic tabs attached. The green tab reads "ferns," the yellow one "insects," and the blue one "RR weeds." This latter topic reflects a special interest I had years ago when I lived in St. Louis and loved to walk along railroad tracks looking for exotic weeds.

I randomly open the notebook, find myself in the red-tabbed "birds" section, and now I type what's on that page so you can see:

April 18, 1976
(Easter Sunday) Kentucky: McLean County;bushy, weedy area around bridge over Cypress Creek on Knobbs/Semiway road 1 mile E of Semiway; 70, light breeze, clear, from 6:30 to 8:30 AM
1: Mourning Dove
2: Red-bellied Woodpecker
3: Purple Martin
4: Blue Jay
5: Crow
6: Tufted Titmouse
7: Carolina Chickadee
8: Carolina Wren
9: Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
10: White-eyed Vireo
11: Black-throated Green Warbler
12: Hooded Warbler
13: Myrtle Warbler
14: Yellow-throated Warbler
15: Yellowthroat
16: House Sparrow
17: Cardinal
18: Goldfinch
19: Rufous-sided Towhee
20: White-throated Sparrow

My first sensation upon looking over this list is that it's really neat knowing exactly where I was on Easter Sunday morning way back on April 18th, 1976. I was visiting my parents on the farm in Kentucky. I can visualize that early that morning, perhaps even before my parents presented my Easter basket -- a tradition continued far into my adulthood -- I entered my old Volkswagen Beetle and drove to Cypress Creek a couple of miles away. If I think hard, perhaps imagining more than remembering, I can even remember that early-spring morning, the fresh, pale green leaves unfurling on trees, the odor of moist earth from still-unplowed soybean fields along the creek...

In short, this sheet of paper is a souvenir of a time past. It evokes memories of a life and way of being that exist no more. It feels good to remember those Easter baskets, and driving in the old Volkswagen down the gravel road to Cypress Creek, as the cold air gushed through the rusted-out spot below my feet... And it's even good to see which birds I saw that day.

To tell the truth, the list itself isn't a very spectacular one. Not a single species on it can be considered rare or out of the ordinary. These are exactly the birds to be expected along a bushy, weedy creek bank in mid April, in my part of Kentucky.

However, it's also true that what I now know very largely results from my having compiled hundreds of lists similar to this one. In 1976, I was just learning which migrants arrived first. Once I'd amassed several years of lists, gradually the impressions began dawning: Yes, Black-throated Green and Hooded Warblers, and Yellowthroats, they're the "early birds," the migrating species arriving first during spring migration. If today I'd read that on that Easter Sunday I'd seen a Blue-winged Warbler -- which now I know to be a late arriver -- I'd be sure I'd made a misidentification back in 1976.

In other words, my nature study notes have always been, and continue to be, a real "tool" I use as my insights into nature keep growing, evolving, and branching into new fields of interest. It can be the same way for you...

Now I continue thumbing through my notebooks' bird section. I remind myself that by no means have my birding experiences been limited to weedy creek banks near my childhood home. Many of my lists are souvenirs of exotic places. I've birded in over forty countries, and I have lists from them all.

Ah, here's the list from the time I saw my first Chaffinch, spotted downtown near the University of Santiago de Compestela, Spain, back in 1980, during a visit with my friend Sergio. And here's a good sighting of the Gray-collard Becard, seen in southern Mexico near a town with the jaw-breaking name of Ocozocoautla, and here's the wild peacock seen next to that Hindu temple, in India, in 1996...

Therefore, for me, there are three main reasons for keeping nature study notes:

They are "tools" that help me learn
Rummaging through them evokes great memories of being in the field and doing and seeing interesting things
It's a lot of fun to show your lists to others, as I just did...
Of course, nowadays I keep my notes on the computer (and back them up fastidiously!) You might be interested in the computer-friendly ideas for organizing your notes on our Note Organization Page.

When you get some solid identifications of plants and animals in your Notebook, be sure to consider posting your IDs at the wonderful iNaturalist.Org website.

I am often - well to be correct I do most of my activities outside. I see so many things that I would like to remember but I have the shortest memory in the world and so I have begun to attempt to write notes in a field notebook. I am not so observant or clear as to what to write. I think it would be a real good idea especially if done correct and during the winter I look back on summer notes or even years later to review them and to be taken back to the time written .
Also I think it would improve my observational skills.
As I keep doing my recordings I think I am getting better at including times, conditions of environment. I don't always include temperature which I want to

Do any of you relate to this?

It is around seven AM and the road - highway is just a buzzing with people headed north to Whistler. I live halfway between Vancouver and whistler along the main route. I think today will be a good day to be on the ski hills if younare a skier - I'm not, never have been and now since the head on car collision not even a possibility. It also appears at the moment to be good driving conditions.. We had major heavy rain this week.
Anyways by the amount of passing vehicles Whistler is going to be packed today... Good for that towns economy

It is kind of funny to watch .. Dalhouise runs so fast for an old dog. As we drive towards the beach about a mile away he begins to get so excited and whinny ... Then when I pulmthrough the gates... I go just far enough to make sure no cars are coming around a bend... Then I open my door and Dalhouise climbs all overme to get out. Then he runs in front of the car - I wait for this because I know he wants to pee on the tree at the passenger side.. Then he runs I front of the car a few yards past the fence and then over to the walking path... I now am following him in the middle of the road as he runs 10 km to get past the fence... I drive in the middle to prevent any cars from becoming an issue if they should appear.. Once Dalhouise is on the path I drive slow on the wrong side with flasher going for his safety. The road is a pot hole dirt path with lots of room for cars to go around us.. Once Dalhouise is about to thirds down this path I drive ahead tomthen parking lot and wait for him... He never leaves the safety path along the ocean.... Depending on how busy the area I might driver further down the parking lot to the official sandy beach area and wait. He knows the route well and comes along at his leisure happy as any wet dog can be...

Heavy - heavy rain - raining dogs and cats .. It was so heavy I did as little walking outside today as possible. I took out the Dalhouise for a short time - later I took him to the beach and opend the car door and let him run.. He runs down the beach path while I drive on the road..
Lazy me... But it is raining so friging heavy.

I feel you pain, when the number of steps gets screwed up. I have never walked at Burnaby Lake but that's on my to do list this year. Have a wonderful walk.

Last night I looked at my old fashion pedometer and it read only about 1700 steps... That can not be true... It must had gotten reset some how during the day. I had walked Dalhouise earlier in the day that would had been at least 2000 steps right there and then I was geocaching in the afternoon - that I believe would had brought me close to ten thousand steps alone..
Today I am not sure what will happen - we have the plumber coming this morning to fix broken sinks, drains and to remove a broken garburator and to instal our new dishwasher. How long will this take? I have no idea. Then I think by afternoon the rains will be upon us so that will limit my outdoor activity, especially right now as this cold bug will not let go completely. This nasty dry cough came just when I thought I was healed ...
My mood is better though at the moment... I do hope I get to hike and geocache Burnaby Lake before th end of January though...

It is a gorgeous day in Northern BC, Granisle in particular. Got up by 7 and took the dogs for a long walk. Managed to track over 5000 steps and saw foxes.

Migraines are starting to subside... thank goodness.

I tracked my whole weeks worth of exercise tonight... its been tough to get on the computer and get things done lately.

I understand the motivation issue NYX, Sometimes it easier to do things with a in real life group of people. I did find that weight watchers was a good program and it actually was the catalyst for me to get to where I am today. Weight watchers is good because it teaches you what your eating, you have to journal all your food, just like spark but you get to meet once a week with in real life people and get the accountability you need at the weigh ins.

Good Luck girl... its really about calories in and calories out and I KNOW you can do it!

Cold is under control.. thank goodness!
Very sorry to hear about your migraine Heather, I cannot relate, but hope you feel better soon.

I am 'considering' another weight loss program in conjunction with SP.
I did really well with SP alone last fall... since then.. nothing.. my motivation has dwindled.

I'm not keeping the records I should be and I've not lost a single pound since September, other than those that I regained and re-lost.

I find I cannot stay motivated by myself. I have no accountability other than to myself.
I still walk almost everyday, but never by myself. in fact I seldom exercise by myself. I have a fitbit which is my one motivator, but I'm not even as loyal to it anymore. I still eat reasonably well, but I've not been quite as strict on my diet as I was before. A few more happy-hours, a few more chocolates than before, maybe a slightly larger portion than before.

I think I need accountability... so that's why I'm considering another method along with SP.

Any suggestions??

Nyx

Tax Season for me, so I'm CRAZY busy and don't know how often I'll be checking in.

Still walking a couple of miles most mornings... it's nice that it's lighter in the morning... as least for a week or so yet.. lol

Did an Aqua-Fit class last night...... man, was I stiff this morning!! LOL.. who'd a thunk it??

Going snow camping with my Pathfinders at the end of the month on Cypress... it's a challenging camp... a hard hike in, plus building snow shelters... I'll definitely burn a few calories on that weekend!

Heather... glad to hear that your Practicum is done... are you still dancing??

Have a GREAT week everyone!
