Sounds like a wonderful trip! I'm sure you will have lots to share with your students to inspire them. The language would definitely be challenging. I wonder if there is a group near you that focuses on Hawaiian style music.
Tomorrow evening my daughter and her boyfriend and my two granddaughters and I will get together to play for their parents. :)

emoticon Home again after four weeks on Hawai'i Island, (the Big Island).

I got to participate in several kanikapila and also a class. The chords and strum patterns were easy. Trying to sing the Hawaiian lyrics as required in the class did not go well for me. Trying to read and memorize a mixed bunch of sounds is hard. It will take a much longer exposure to the language before it begins to resonate with me.
emoticon
We also got to hear some of the top Hawaiian entertainers in evening concerts: John Cruz,, John Keawe, Kapono, and Brother Noland. There were "Hawaiian Legends" concerts on Thursday evenings at the Don the Beachcomer Tiki Bar in Kailua Kona. Good shows.

I just ordered "one more ukulele" emoticon Yep.

I ordered a Bass Ukulele. I've been interested in playing bass. Sang bass through high school and college and later in a community choir. I just finished playlig bass in a steel band. I like to listen to the bass lines in songs. So it seems like a natural extension of my music.

I took two workshops on Bass Ukulele at the ukulele retreat we just attended and got some good basic instruction and I want to put it into action.

I ordered a relatively inexpensive, $160, acoustic/electric bass for starters. I already have an amp for the electric hook up.

Last night the college steel bands performed on the street at the big farmers market in SLO. There are three bands that played. I played the 6 Bass in one band, then joined a second band to play "Yellow Bird" on my small transportable marimba . The bands each did three sets during the evening.
emoticon Steel Pan, great fun!!!

And that clears the deck, the Uke classes and the Steel Pan class are over. Now I can concentrate on learning to play Bass Ukulele. I'm utilizing a makeshift Bass to get started and before I spend the money for a U-Bass. I may have to postpone that purchase until after we stop traveling, April to August.

Good for you, sounds like fun.

There were around 80 people (my guess) at this four day retreat. It is put on by the Ukulele Club of Santa Cruz. Workshop leaders were mostly club members.

"One more ukulele!" I like the way you think. :)

I just got back from the Portland Ukulele Association monthly strum. It's a great group, usually 50 or more people. Very fun!

Had a fun four days at the "Smoldering Uke Retreat" this weekend in Carmel Valley, CA. Mostly, I was in a coast mode after just finishing teaching two 8 week ukulele classes. But the workshopsI took gave me new ideas and skills to try working on "Triplets", three for one count strums, are one of these I could improve on.

My big lesson was a two part workshop on playing the U-bass. That has been one of my goals. Almost bought a U-bass in January. But, the store had sold the one I'd been considering getting.

I figured that was a sign to wait until my scheduled cleared and I got past teaching two beginner classes and taking a Steel Drum class at the college. Been playing the bass drums in the steel band. That was a part of my bass training. We have our Final this Thursday by playing on the street at the big "Farmers Market" in town. FUN

"A ukulele player only needs one more ukulele", and this time it will be a U-Bass.

It is the Hawaiian word for a group strum.

"We eat and we drink and we sing all day, kanikapila in the old Hawaiian way."
That is a line from John Cruz's popular "Island Style" song.

emoticon FINAL EXAM emoticon
Next week is the final session for my Beginning Ukulele class. I told them there was no "Auditing" the class, everyone gets the exam:

QUESTIONS INCLUDE
1. We've been playing CHORDS for 7 weeks... WHAT IS A CHORD?
2. Name three things that V7 chords do for us.
3. Describe minor chords.
4. KEEP THE BEAT: What is Common Time? How many beats per measure? Waltz Time? 6/8 time means what?

PERFORMANCE (We play)
1. “All My Loving” It has most of the chore chords we’ve been learning.

2. Classic Ukulele: “Ain’t She Sweet ~ Five Foot Two” aka "Ode to the V7 Chord"

3. “12 Bar Blues” We're going to have a jam! Know the pattern and strum.

4. Play “Island In The Sun” using the Island Strum pattern.

emoticon Then we're having a Kanikapila for the rest of the class

Talked myself into starting a " Ukulele Fest ~ Kanikapila," on June 5th
It is the kickoff for the Summer Concert Series in the Park. Two + hours long.
emoticon
I've lined up four or more local ukulele groups who will showcase their program then lead everyone is several group strums. Then I've got an Hawaiian Trio who's leader has a house full of young Keiki hula dancers who will dance while this band plays. I'm sticking them in the middle of the groups. And to end, I have a large group of hula ladies with their small band. I'm giving them 30 minutes to end the afternoon's program, Grand Finale!!!
emoticon emoticon
emoticon Crazy, I talked myself into doing this. No one pushed me into it. ???? emoticon
But, is should be a fun event.

We are half way through this 8 week "Introduction To Ukulele" class. Tonight the class meets the Bb chord. This will allow us to play songs in the key of F !!!

I admit I thunked that chord for 50 years and hated it. "Ukulele Mike" Lynch was the one who gave me the insight into properly fingering it: "Get your wrist forward, and open it up." Yes, there is a tendency to pull back, get tight and the thunk strings. Now I rarely have trouble with it. Thanks Mike

Dementia Prevention

Yes, 3/4 of the class are in the 60+ age range with a couple 80 year olds. We're all working at dementia prevention, and having fun doing it.
emoticon
At the other end I have a teenager in both classes. The fifteen year old in the evening class missed the first class because he mom had the wrong day in mind. Mom contacted me, upset and wondering what she could do. I invited them to my home for a catch up lesson. And when we sat down for the lesson I handed Mom a ukulele, too. "Your not going to just sit there." Mom love it, joined the class and is one of my more enthusiastic students.

I've had a couple weeks of Steel Drum class now and its great fun and a learning experience. This time around I'm on the 6 Bass because generally I'm interested in working on the Bass part of music and expanding my skills in this area.

I also got asked to join the Intermediate Band and play "Yellow Bird" with them on my marimba. I did this with a steel band 5 years ago. It will be fun. I'll take my little 2.5 octave marimba. Much much easier to transport than the big old 4 octave Deagan Imperial marimba.

And, in the other sector of my busy musical life I've got two beginning Ukulele classes to teach on Tuesdays with a total of 39 students. Getting people stated playing music is big positive for me. Watching them blossom and begin to really understand some of the elements of music, not just hearing a melody. +++

Not bad for an 'old guy' in his late 70's. Its my dementia prevention medication. I'm using all parts of the brain!!

Hope the arrangement works for you group and you have fun with it. If you are picking a part, I find it easier to play up the fretboard with those barre chords and fingerings.

A small study/practice group I participate with sometimes does this with "The Girl From Impanema". Two people play chords off the nut. I play midway up the neck, 5 - 7th fret, and one man has it down by melody notes. This gives a much fuller sound to the song. I can e-mail you an arrangement with multiple chords if you are interested.

The James Hill Ukulele in the Classroom class sounds interesting. I'm sure I could learn plenty for that course.

Six people sounds like a nice sized group. And playing individual parts, a ukulele choir, can be rewarding.

Another simple technique, is play a song using the same chords with one person plays the chord off the nut and another plays the same chord up the fretboard Nice for a duet.

I'm in the Ukulele in the Classroom course. The sessions go 6 weeks at a time with a 2 month break. I wish the break wasn't so long! We are 3/4 of the way through the 1st of 3 books. I love the format of playing different parts together. We have a small group of 6.

Yes, maybe a quarter of the students have attended my classes in the past. They repeat for; 1. an opportunity to play with others; 2. and gain confidence in their playing.

3 Some of them took the classes then haven't really continued to play/practice and need the commitment of the class to get going again.

Happy Strummin'

Two classes of 20 students are almost full with over a week to go before classes start. There is a 4:00 PM and a 7:00PM class. I expect them to be full and more.

These will be the 12th and 13th classes I've had in the past three years. I guess my teacher reputation is holding up, but I know the real driver is the ukulele. Everyone wants to learn to play ukulele.

emoticon THE POWER OF THE UKULELE emoticon

The next beginning ukulele class doesn't start until Jan, 19th and it is already full with a waiting list.

So, do I run a second class as I did in the Fall?? I'm thinking of maybe a late afternoon class ahead of the evening class. I was trying not to over run myself with Beginning classes this time around. We are even charging more for this class than what I'd been charging and thought that at might reduce class enrollment. But, the class is still inexpensive at 8 weeks for $60.

Additionally, FOR ME: I've already signed up for a Steel Drum Band class one night a week, . I took these classes several years ago and had a great time. They are run through the Community College. Guess I'm going to keep busy.
I could certainly have worse choses to be having to make. emoticon

Banjo ukes are mostly a matter of strumming techniques. The tuning is the same as a regular uke so you don't have to learn another fretboard and chord structure..

The U-Bass and E-Bass are Baritone Uke sized instruments, but they are tuned as a regular 4 string Bass; E A D G. I'm currently using a "Bass For Kids" method book so as to not over strain my old brain.

Okay, my immediate goal is to dig in and learn to the play Bass guitar.
Or more specifically the U-Base Ukulele.

This has been an interest for me for a long time. Now that I'm between teaching ukulele classes until January 19th when the next class starts, this is a good time to concentrate on ME. emoticon

My simple goal is to learn to play a good bass line for the simple three and four chord songs I teach in the beginning ukulele classes. Then use it to help students hear the basic chord structure and keep in rhythm without dropping or adding beats.

James Hill just put out a great little video on youtube suggesting the G6 is the best chord.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWhhw__
mdwM&feature=youtu.be
Put that all together in one line. This form is determined to split it.at the m. ??

I'm suggesting I prefer GM7 emoticon

Check out his video and try moving the G6 around.
Then try a GM7 and move it around, yes it becomes a barred chord. emoticon
I love that Major 7th sound.

Since there are no others that I can jam with, the jam tracks I have should be a plus for helping me play with others. LOL

It sounds like you are making a great change to your lessons. Can't wait to hear how your students like it!

My amp has a slot for 2 plug ins AND ear phones. My amp is a Fender G-Dec. A super nice amplifier! It has over 100 preset tracks, but most of them are not to my taste! :D It has an sd slot so I can also record tracks from other sources and plug them into the amp.

Playing against any other source of music pushes you to keep the rhythm, stay in time. If you are not playing regularly with regular musical groups then the pre-recorded clips are a good exercise. The biggest problem I find with new players is a tendency to drop beats. They do not hold a chord for the full count.

Today I ordered a PA and instrument amp for my classes. It will include a wireless headset mic. I've been borrowing a little PA from a friend to do my classes because the large classes can't hear me. I've also been hanging my little practice amp from my music stand to increase the sound of my instrument. This amplifier has both wireless mic and a guitar plug-in for my instruments. It should be an improved system for class.

Today I was messing around with my amplifier and found out how to use the jam tracks I have. Of course, they are for guitar, but hey, I didn't do too badly with my ukulele. It does help one to learn to stay on strum and in beat! LOL Another something to work on! :D Love playing my ukulele!

The Fall ukulele classes are over.
They are fun to teach, but it is nice when the pressure is off. emoticon

I've agreed to do another series starting January 19th for 8 weeks. " Introduction to the Ukulele " for all the folks that got one for Christmas.

It was the last one for the year. They only run them during Daylight Savings time.
It was a good strum and a good time. I can't sing those Hawaiian songs, but generally know the melody and enjoy strumming along.

I do sing at home. However, right now I only hum in public! LOL

Thanks for the encouragement! I have improved and I did get garage band on my computer to record it! I did notice I make a lot of mistakes trying to be perfect when I listened to the playback! LOL

As you play and begin to hear the chords in the music you may be surprised how much your singing improves.

I have several students who couldn't sing, and yes they were out of tune and all over the scale. As they began to hear the chords they were playing in relationship to the melody their singing improved significantly.

Don't give up on singing, its fun too. emoticon

I hear ya Rich. I tell everyone about the Ukulele and how versatile it is. We are riding/camping this weekend for the Breast Cancer Awareness Ride. I plan to bring my Ukulele and play with some of my other friends that play mandolin and guitar. It should be fun. Some even sing...not me!! I sound like a sick coyote. LOL

I would love to teach people to play...that is my nature to show others what I can do! Good Luck with your lessons! :D

Glad you have found your musical preference with the ukulele. It is a remarkable little instrument. So many options for what and how you play it. Jake has sure proven that.

emoticon
Me. I'm still stuck in beginner mode as I help people get started with the instrument. And that's okay. I get to teach music! And, it is not reading a line of notes and playing it on a instrument like a clarinet.

It is fun to see people not only begin to play the ukulele and have fun, but to also begin to hear music beyond a simple melody line. As they learn to hear the chord structure even the worst singers begin to start singing in tune,( or closer to being in tune). Rhythm and Chords are the basics, and that is what a ukulele teaches.

I have finished the Picking lessons from Brett McQueen. I am continuing to practice at least 30 minutes per day. I really like the classicals. I have been playing from John Kings Ukulele Masters "The Classical Ukulele" A great book for beginners or experienced players.

Glad you made it home safely Rich. Those mudslides sound horrible. Good Luck with the Ukulele classes.

We're back from the two week trip to Cabo.
Good trip , but a tough two days getting home. First a canceled flight out of MX to LA. Then the next day got caught in the traffic mess from the Mudslides closing two major routes north/south in CA. Only our coast route was open and it became a parking lot for150 miles. Our 2.75 hour drive home from LA took 7.5 hours.

emoticon
The Continuing Ukulele class starts again this Thursday. It is another 5 week series. I've been busy preparing lesson plans for the first two weeks. This is the 5th time I've taught this segment so I have some idea where the whole class is going, but I'll adjust as we move along.

Go get 'em! I started a new Challenge today! I originally lost 37 pounds. Now I've gained 10 pounds back!! I am now working to lose those pounds and a few more. I am loving the new Jumpin' Jims Classicals book. I have learned so much since the first time I picked up this instrument. My favorite is picking. As always I am still learning to play in sync with the music! LOL

This is a monthly potluck and strum held at the local Red Dirt Coffee House. It draws in many of the locals with Hawaiian connections, Kama'ainas. There were at about 20 strummers sitting in for the strums. Also had a blind girl with a beautiful voice who sang several of the songs. As usual, some of the women did hula dances. And the young girls,( 8 to 14), group danced to several songs, too. Nice weather, great time.

Had a great time strumming with the local 'ohana at the monthly kanikapila. The Hawaiian songs are generally simple chording, the strum patterns can be lively and fun. I let them sing all those Hawaiian lyrics. I did take the lead on Waimanalo Blues, it has English words. emoticon

Today it was about Steel Pans, or drums. It was the Stone Soup Music Festival in our local town and one of the groups appearing was 'Steel The Band." I enjoyed listening to their performance.

About 6 years ago I took a series of Steel Drum Band class through our Community College. Three 10 week sessions with a final, a performance at the Thursday Night Farmers Market. In the last class series I played a marimba with the band instead of pan for several of the numbers.

Great fun, Love steel pan music.

Well, with the reputation of the "fun sounding" ukulele...who could ask for more? Anyone that can teach (and have fun doing it) makes for an awesome person! I would just love to have others that I could play with so I can perfect my playing.

I'm trying to play Op. 35, No. 1 with the metronome. Dang!!! I play it through with minimal errors, then when i turn on the metronome...blam...error after error!! LOL Although the normal person would get bored and move on....not me!! I am a die hard... I hear the tune in my head when I sleep and hum it everywhere i go. Brett plays it as well, and I've tried to keep up with him...ehhhhh, error after error...just like the metronome. LOL I will be elated and proud of myself when I can actually play it without error. LOL

emoticon The Power Of The Ukulele
People want to learn to play it and have fun strumming with others. I think that is what's driving it.

The Teacher emoticon Not Great.
But, I'm an organized and otherwise competent teacher. I think... And, people have had success learning to play the ukulele in my classes. The class is inexpensive.

So, if you put these four elements together and you've got a full class, or two.

I'm limiting class size to 20 students. Last year, things got out of hand and I ended up with 31 students in the class. Way too'oo many for a first beginning class, even with three good helpers. This five week session is the beginning of a two class, ten week series.

Every time I teach a beginning class I'm blown away by the interest in playing ukulele. emoticon emoticon
