Time For Me

It is good to be through leading classes and group strums for a while. (No classes until Fall.) Now I can focus on my own skills and enjoy working on some songs I want to play. Being in a teacher or leader mode keeps you busy just trying to keep up with the class/group you are in front of. Gotta practice what I'm leading.,

Now it is time for me! emoticon

Yes, I know about attending groups that are ahead of me. Or, at least I need a chance to practice some of the songs before I joined the group's strum. It is good when strum groups give you a head up on what they will be playing if the song are more that four chord songs.

THE ZEN CHORD
You can and should play the Zen Chord when you unable to keep up with the chords in the song arrangement. It helps you keep the beat and adds rhythm to the group's strum. Come back in when you reach chords you can play.

The "Zen Chord" ??? Yep, lightly mute your strings with your hand so they just give a thunk, and keep strumming.

Uh oh, I'd be in big trouble if I had to lead! emoticon

The class that I'm in is now officially over my head. But that's ok, I can still hang out in the back and just strum on the chords I do know. Slow and steady, I guess...

The ukulele classes ended last week and it felt good to be done and free. Except, I got asked to lead the local strum group this Sunday. The regular leader is unable to do it this month. So, back up front again.

I've been leading ukulele strums regularly for the past couple years. But, I'm not really comfortable being the band leader. I'd rather sit in the back row and just follow. What price glory!

I'm off to teach the last Beginning Ukulele class for this five week session. Then tomorrow night we're holding a Fun Strum with both this beginning class and the last session for the Continuing class. Should be a fun ending for both classes.

Jake Shimabukuro Concert

Jake had a great concert last night. Much better than his concert here a year ago. This one was musical. He showed his skills and the instruments qualities through a number of genre. A year ago his program was mostly technical, showing off Jake's tremendous strumming skills. But, by the end I was tired of the improvisation and running the scales.

Last night we enjoyed the music.
Thanks Jake, Great Performance. emoticon

This concert ukulele is one I've had for 10+ years. It has been the principal ukulele I play, although I have a collection of over a dozen ukes. It just began not to sound as good. Have a friend who recently tried a half dozen different string on his expensive ukulele. He found he like the Worth strings the best and gave me a set. So, I switched to the new strings and like them.

I still like Aquila strings and have them on most of my ukuleles. When I have someone with an inexpensive ukulele complaining about how it sounds I suggest they spend $8 and try new Aquila strings before they buy a new ukulele.

I wish I had been playing the uke as long as you. Unfortunately, I have only had mine a year and haven't even had to change the strings yet. But I know my day is coming. I will take your information to heart. Thanks!

I had some old Aquila string on my Concert ukulele that had gotten so they would not hold tuning.. They also sounded tired. A friend gave me some Worth Fluoro Carbon strings.

I'm a long time Aquila fan, But, I really like these new strings.

I liked Pete Seeger and his music. I find that lots of songs that I enjoy playing over and over were his. They just make me feel good!

Pete Seeger was a banjo player.

Tonight when my ukulele class played our tribute to Pete Seeger, I played my banjo ukulele for "Where Have All The Flowers Gone."

Sorry Mr. Seeger, I'm not much of a banjo player. But, you were remembered. RIP

*** PETE SEEGER - DEAD AT 94 emoticon

I sent my ukulele classes an arrangement of "Where Have All The Flowers Gone" (1955), by Mr Seeger. We will perform it at the classes this week in his memory. Maybe also his "If I Had A Hammer,' 1949, too.

He was a major influence in bringing the folk songs forward into the 1950's and 60s' Yep, protest songs and all.

RIP Pete Seeger! emoticon And thank you so much!

Fortunately, the temperatures are in the 70's here in California. The kanikapila is outside the coffee shop. 2 PM 'til dark in the winter. Just strumming, no potluck, in the winter and standard time.

That sounds like fun. If I wasn't working nights and classes so far away, I might join one. But I think I am doing ok on my own so far. I have only had my uke almost a year. I still love it!

Started a new beginner class of eight ukers last night.

Tonight is our Continuing class with 19 registered students. It is keeping me busy, in a fun way.

75 years young, or "Forever Young". Pete Seeger emoticon

I agree. It's practice, practice, practice. But when I can play all my favorite songs, it's not practice, it's fun!

PRACTICE

Yep, it is the key word for improving your playing abilities. It was the first word in my email to my classes this week They get the play list for the next class with time to practice most of the songs we'll strum in class.

Well, there you go. You probably teach with a student's perspective!

My class was really fun, but challenging. I realize I can't maintain a strum pattern, sing, AND change chords at the same time! :) I guess that comes with practice. But I really love how when I am playing, I don't think about anything else.

Hope things are going well with you. Keep strummin'!

HEY !,
18 students at the first class. Off and rolling again!

BUT
This is a continuation of two previous classes, not a beginning class. However six people signed up, or tried to sign up who were new beginners. This was not the class for them.

SO,
The City Rec. Dept. has persuaded me to run another Beginning Ukulele Class, 5 weeks. I also had several people asking me to teach another class. So it will be interesting to see how big ths class gets.

WOW !
The amount of interest there is out there for learning to play ukulele.
???
From 1955 to 2000, I hardly mentioned I played ukulele due to that negative remarks I'd get disparaging ukuleles.

GO UKULELE! emoticon

Come March, and after the classes are over, I'm leaving town. Won't be around for several months !

These classes will be more of a jam than hard instruction. Practicing playing is what most of them are looking for. Simple Strummin'

In the evening class they'll also get a wee bit of chord theory, starting with what's a chord? A intro to a couple ways to pick songs, I Travis Picking; Intro to tablature; more barre chords; and playing up the fretboard.

But the big emphasis will be on just playing different songs, different genre. And, practice Playing By Ear, an important skill.

Looking like the Rec Dept class may have 20 students. A bit more than the dozen or so I was hoping for. This will keep me busy Thursday evenings for six weeks.

Also having a Beginner's Review session here at the house Thursday afternoons. Probably have 8 to 10. Mostly, friends who have the basics, but don't play enough to really learn to play. Plus I have two from the evening class that need extra help.

Ukulele Thursdays for me.

My class was really fun. It's more of a "jam" than lessons, but it looks like he will start out with some review/instruction before we jump in, which is great. Looking forward to next week!

Already have a dozen signed up for the Recreation Dept class. Good size, and I hope it stays around that number although it is open for up to 25. Registration has been open for a week with another week to go. I had 26 register for a beginning class last Sept. It is the third round of a continuing Simple Strummin' class.

We may play Margaritaville, and a lot of other simple songs. At the harder level we'll try Jobin's, "Girl from Ipanema" both at the nut and moving it up the fretboard with some jazzy chords. And, a good rhythm for strummining.

OOPS!!

I bought another ukulele, a vineyard Tenor TK150SCQ. It is in new condition, couldn't beat the price. Has a bright tone with its Spruce front. It includes an electronic pickup, a first for me. Now I'll have to find an amp to go with it.

Anyone heard of Vineyard Ukuleles and Guitars?? It was a new name for me.

Thursday, 11/21, was the last ukulele class for this session. Teaching ukulele to new students is fun. But, it is nice to take a break. I have agreed to have a continuing class, January 9th to February 13th I'm expecting about a dozen students. However, I expected that last Fall and had 26 students in the first class..

Ukulele class again last night, we're half way through this session.

Left them with the homework assignment of practicing "Love Me Tender", my Elvis Prestley / Nora Jones arrangement. It uses the soft D7 and includes some new chords for them: B7, Em or Em7, Cm, and GM7. It ends with a Cm, GM7 to give it a little Nora Jones jazz flavor.

We learned about chord extensions last night. Next week I'll add in a melody note on top of the D7 in the chorus to enrich it and fill in a hole in the arrangement.

Aloha
We had a busy ukulele weekend. Attended a concert and workshop by a Hawaiian born (Kona, HI) entertainer on Saturday. Then attended the local Aloha Festival here in town on Sunday. Lots of music and hula dancers as well as good food. We got some huli huli chicken.

Yes, Jake is quite a talent and ukulele ambassador.

I've been able to see him in concert several times and also in an up close and personal workshop at the Live Oak Music Festival several years ago.

There are a lot of great ukulele videos on YouTube, and also a lot of junk.

Doo Wop, Ice Cream Changes, Vanilla Chords: = I vi IV V7 emoticon

This is a four chord sequence: C, Am, Dm or F, G7, and back to C

It was the basis for all those Doo Wop era songs (1953 to1965+).
Blue Moon, Heart and Soul, Earth Angel, All I have to Do Is Dream, Sincerely, .....and so on.

I put together a medley of the verses from these songs using the C, Am, F, G7 chord sequence.. We'll play it tonight a class. I can e-mail you at copy.

(I put together a mini lesson on the other lesson forum.)

Your class sounds like fun. I should probably know, but I don't.... What chords are you referring to (I, vi, etc)? Maybe I should go on youtube and look up ice cream changes.

I paid her $150 for the ukulele. The best we can figure, that is about what it is worth on the market. Spent another $25 for new tuners and Aquila strings. It wasn't a steal. But I've got an interesting old instrument, made from birds eye maple. I'm happy with it and she got a fair price. A win-win.

Third session of my beginner class tonight. We got to strumming, 10 songs using C, F, G& C7, Dm. Then I ended with, "It Never Rains In Southern Calif." Simple three chord strum of A, Bm7, C#m7. (A , + Barred second, and fourth frets.) Fun strum. I'm calling it our rain dance song, looking for a wetter year here in CA. Fun Session

One of my students had an old resonator banjo uke she wanted to sell to get money for a ukulele.

The old banjo had broken tuners and broken old metal strings. Not sure how old it is. No name or identification on it we can find.. But it did have an old newspaper page stuck to the inside of the resonator that dated from WWI. We suspect it was one of the multitude of relatively inexpensive instruments produced then. I bought it from her, replaced the tuners and put on Aquila strings and it sounds pretty good.

Thanks I'll look at it.
I think the second continuing class is going to run over with an extra session after Thanksgiving. I was thinking we might strum Holiday songs. This may turn into a community sing depending on what the Recreation Dept. wants to do with it.

I've got a full class (20) signed up for my beginning ukulele class that starts tomorrow night. I suspected there was a lot of interest out there when I suggested a class to the city's recreation department. It filled in record time.

Now I have to get to work. Work? Teaching ukulele is FUN, not work.

I've watched some Uke Underground and enjoyed their lesson. I also follow Ukulele Mike and enjoy some of his lessons and arrangements. Mike did a lesson on playing the Em chord. It hit home for me as I often have a problem getting that chord . I tend to opt out for an Em7 when I can get away with it. Mike had a good lesson for playing this chord.

Fun Strum at the house today with nine players. Several were newer players so we generally kept it to simpler music.

Not currently in a class, although I'd like to be. Has anyone tried the Ukulele Underground online tutorials (the subscription series)? Wondering how that would be...
