Cool. We have basses at all on the jams I go to, mostly Ukulele bass but sometimes regular bass. Adds so much to the jam.

emoticon UKULELE BASS, or a U-Bass
There is a Bass Guitar player who has been taking my beginning ukulele classes. So, last night I took my U-Bass to class for him to try out. He'd never seen one before. He had a bit of trouble with the feel of the thick string of this bass. It has Aquila bass strings on it. Otherwise, he was intrigued with it.

He plays bass in a rock band, and has lots of hot fast licks he tried to run.
And, he is enjoying learning to play ukulele.
Hey, playing music is FUN. emoticon emoticon

emoticon emoticon UKULELE II CLASSES emoticon
The second five class sessions of my beginning ukulele class start today: 4:00- 5:30 pm and 7:00 -8:30 pm. The afternoon class is over full with 23 students, the evening is a nice size with 12. The five class series runs over six weeks Oct. 18th to Nov 22nd. No class Election Day.

These are all students who have previously attended my classes and are strumming songs. Now we teach them to play more chords, play in different keys, and enhance their songs with different strums and added color chords. We'll also give them some more basic music theory to enhance their understanding of music.

It is great fun to watch people learn to play and to better understand music beyond just hearing a melody line and lyrics.

You definitely have your priorities straight! Wishing your wife a quick recovery.
I would love to see James Hill perform sometime. I've taken classes using his method and really enjoy them.

James Hill Concert and Workshop

Caught their concert. It was very enjoyable. I was also supposed to attend his workshop last evening and his sessions with elementary school ukulele players today. But, it didn't work out as my wife had eye surgery yesterday and follow up today. She takes precedence over ukulele.

emoticon Class Tonight
This will be the third weekly ukulele classes. 21 ukers in the afternoon and 15 in the evening class. Three hours on my feet in front of class, plus the before and after set up take down greet and answer question, is a good six hour workout for an old guy.

Then we head to Ashland tomorrow. emoticon

And, the Steel Pan Band class I'm taking starts the 26th. Fortunately, the ukulele class I'm teaching on Tuesdays ends the 27th!!

Sounds like interest continues to be good in your area. Seems to be the same in Portland where I go to learn and play. I'm excited that a friend has just purchased her own ukulele after borrowing mine for a couple months. Yay!

Monday night was the first try at developing a local strum group. A local restaurant provided the room and about 25 people showed up. Close to half of them had been in my beginner Uke classes at some time. Made me feel good.

I will not be participating with the group in the forseeable future as they are meeting on a night I have Steel Band practice. But I wish them well.

Hula Practice Night emoticon emoticon

Sat in with the ISLAND CONNECTION band last evening for the hula ladies practice. Always a fun and a good strum exercise. They were working on several songs which had interesting chord sequences in them. "Na Pua Ali'i" included an interesting vamp; C F G7 C A# G7 C. I always strum better on those old song I know like; "Koke'e" and "Punamana"

emoticon There was a full crowd of Hula Ladies there last night, 15 I think. Plus the Trio and three extra strummers, we really filled up the single wide classroom where they meet.

I attended a workshop and concert by an Australian last evening.
emoticon Disappointing
He was not doing well with the lessons, spoke softly and had no microphone.
His core message was rhythm and counting. I fully agreed with him on that, but the message was lost. He eventually tried to teach the group triplet strums.......
Concert
I was impressed by his strumming skills both the speed and more interestingly the strum patterns he used. His concert was much better than the workshop. But, again he needed amplification.
emoticon
He used a soprano ukulele for the entire session. It was interesting to hear, as so many of us have gone to the larger instruments.

One of these guys is me, playing with the Island Connect band for the hula dancers at the festival. A Lap Steel, 12 string guitar, and three ukuleles, two of which are beautiful Kamakas.

The song we were playing is "Wahine 'ilikea", light skinned woman, a popular song about the island of Moloka'i. The hula dancers are out front telling the story to the crowd.

Tomorrow is the year-end potluck and open mike for the Portland Ukulele Association. A friend is coming along who is interested in playing the ukulele. I'm hoping she takes the next step and gets her own uke. (She's using one of mine for now) Fingers crossed!

emoticon KANIKAPILA SUNDAY emoticon

"Kanikapila" is the Hawaiian word for a strum. The local Red Dirt Coffee House sponsors it the last Sunday of the month. It brings together a lot of locals with Hawaiian connections as well as a bunch of us "haoles".

It usually starts with a bunch of "Hapa Haole" songs. The stuff we all know that was written for the tourists. Then the Hawaiians begin singing their songs in Hawaiian. Simple melodies, simple chording, confusing language. Songs like "Puamana," and "Koke'e". So, let them sing the words and enjoy the strum.

And it's time to bring on the hula dancers

I'm fortunate that there are multiple ukulele groups in my area. I could totally overdose. emoticon
There is an intermediate level group about 20 miles away that meets twice a month. 30 miles and there are two different strum sessions once a month. And in 30 miles in the other direction is a large weekly strum group. And there are several other small strum sessions close by.

I've been sitting in with the Trio that provides music for the hula dance group. They practice once a week. I'm learning Hawaiian songs as I play with them. At least the melody and rhythms, the words are another story. Fortunately, the trio has some good Hawaiian singers so I just strum along.

June 5th is a Ukulele Fest I've arranged at a local park, noon to 2:30. We're bringing together five of these groups to showcase their group playing several songs and then leading everyone in a group strum. We'll end with a half hour program by the hula ladies and their Island Connection band. ( I may join in and strum with them.)
emoticon This should be a fun day!

The strumming group I go to once a month has a year end gathering in June with a pot luck and opportunity for anyone to perform for the group. This will be my first time to go and I look forward to seeing the brave performers! There is a wide range of experience so there will be amateurs to professionals sharing their skills. I'm sure it will be fun and inspiring. Of course, we'll get to strum a few songs together as well. I'm taking a friend along who is interested in taking up ukulele and hope this will spark her to join us!

I am in the same boat, but decided it is worth is to travel the hour and a half. I join a monthly strum and take group lessons once a week. My playing is so much better because of it. I hope you will be able to find a way to meet up with others. Maybe you can recruit a friend to take up ukulele?

I will continue my practicing. I am getting better and better. I love playing my ukulele. I just wish i could get together with others that play! The closest people that play are over an hour and a half drive from me. Sooo, I'll just continue to play and learn!

I like what you said about the ukulele helping with singing. I do enjoy singing along with group. Safety in numbers! emoticon

Your classes certainly are an extension of basic strumming and simple chords.
emoticon Good for you!

And too, simple strumming with a group is fun. That is where most of my students end up, stay with simple strumming, and have fun.
emoticon
You say you are not a singer. But, the more you learn to hear the basic chords of a song the better you will find yourself singing. Non-singers become singer regularly with a ukulele to help guide them. More fun!

The trios are separate parts. Gymnopedie 1 has a picked melody, thumb strummed chords and electric ukulele bass parts. Carnival in Venice has a picked melody, picked harmony and pick strum parts. The Long Long Ago piece is a chord melody. Our instructor uses the James Hill material for groups. It's all instrumental. the Gymnopdie 1 piece was arranged by our instructor. Carnival is from our book and the chord melody is my own arrangement I did for an online course James Hill offers for solo playing. I really like the format of both classes. Part of this is because I'm not a singer and part is we learn to play written music not just chords. I do attend a group that strums and sings and I enjoy that, but the classes offer a different kind of challenge.

Yes, playing in a group is always easier. You can kind of hide, disappear when you have a hard time and reappear when you are back on safe territory. And if its a big enough group we get away with it.

Single part in a trio is a LOT harder. Your are exposed and the other two are depending on you.

I'm interested in how you are playing these songs. Strumming chords, Single note, Chord Melody, or what?

Today is my class "funcital!" I will be the strummer in a trio playing Carnival of Venice, the second part in a trio playing Gymnopedie No. 1 and a solo piece that is my own arrangement of Long Long Ago which I composed for another class I'm taking. I'm a little nervous but glad to have this first experience among fellow students of the same ability. I much prefer playing as part of a group. :)

Had a fun time playing with the "Island Connection" trio+ last night as they played for the hula dance group's practice. Their regular uke player was out so I tried to fill in for the basic strumming. I don't sing the Hawaiian lyrics, fortunately they have a great lead singer. So, I just concentrate on chord changes and rhythms.

emoticon ~ UKULELE FEST ~ emoticon
We had our organizational meeting for the June 5th Ukulele Fest yesterday. All the groups had representatives and it looks like this thing is going to fly.
emoticon emoticon
emoticon emoticon Uke Fest, emoticon
Noon to 2:30. Five local ukulele groups performing and also leading group strums. Lots of group strumming between performances.
emoticon emoticon Finale is a leading local Hawaiian Hula group dancing and with their Trio + providing music for their hulas and for more group strums.
FUN ~ FUN ~ FUN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not quite sure why I came up with this idea and took charge of organizing it. I'm blaming in on my other life where I spent 35 years as a school principal organizing stuff.

Sounds like a wonderful trip! I'm sure you will have lots to share with your students to inspire them. The language would definitely be challenging. I wonder if there is a group near you that focuses on Hawaiian style music.
Tomorrow evening my daughter and her boyfriend and my two granddaughters and I will get together to play for their parents. :)

emoticon Home again after four weeks on Hawai'i Island, (the Big Island).

I got to participate in several kanikapila and also a class. The chords and strum patterns were easy. Trying to sing the Hawaiian lyrics as required in the class did not go well for me. Trying to read and memorize a mixed bunch of sounds is hard. It will take a much longer exposure to the language before it begins to resonate with me.
emoticon
We also got to hear some of the top Hawaiian entertainers in evening concerts: John Cruz,, John Keawe, Kapono, and Brother Noland. There were "Hawaiian Legends" concerts on Thursday evenings at the Don the Beachcomer Tiki Bar in Kailua Kona. Good shows.

I just ordered "one more ukulele" emoticon Yep.

I ordered a Bass Ukulele. I've been interested in playing bass. Sang bass through high school and college and later in a community choir. I just finished playlig bass in a steel band. I like to listen to the bass lines in songs. So it seems like a natural extension of my music.

I took two workshops on Bass Ukulele at the ukulele retreat we just attended and got some good basic instruction and I want to put it into action.
emoticon : emoticon Root emoticon 5th | emoticon Root emoticon 5th |

I ordered a relatively inexpensive, $160, acoustic/electric bass for starters. I already have an amp for the electric hook up.

Last night the college steel bands performed on the street at the big farmers market in SLO. There are three bands that played. I played the 6 Bass in one band, then joined a second band to play "Yellow Bird" on my small transportable marimba . The bands each did three sets during the evening.
emoticon Steel Pan, great fun!!!

And that clears the deck, the Uke classes and the Steel Pan class are over. Now I can concentrate on learning to play Bass Ukulele. I'm utilizing a makeshift Bass to get started and before I spend the money for a U-Bass. I may have to postpone that purchase until after we stop traveling, April to August.

Good for you, sounds like fun.

There were around 80 people (my guess) at this four day retreat. It is put on by the Ukulele Club of Santa Cruz. Workshop leaders were mostly club members.

I just got back from the Portland Ukulele Association monthly strum. It's a great group, usually 50 or more people. Very fun!

Had a fun four days at the "Smoldering Uke Retreat" this weekend in Carmel Valley, CA. Mostly, I was in a coast mode after just finishing teaching two 8 week ukulele classes. But the workshopsI took gave me new ideas and skills to try working on "Triplets", three for one count strums, are one of these I could improve on.

My big lesson was a two part workshop on playing the U-bass. That has been one of my goals. Almost bought a U-bass in January. But, the store had sold the one I'd been considering getting.

I figured that was a sign to wait until my scheduled cleared and I got past teaching two beginner classes and taking a Steel Drum class at the college. Been playing the bass drums in the steel band. That was a part of my bass training. We have our Final this Thursday by playing on the street at the big "Farmers Market" in town. FUN

"A ukulele player only needs one more ukulele", and this time it will be a U-Bass.

It is the Hawaiian word for a group strum.

"We eat and we drink and we sing all day, kanikapila in the old Hawaiian way."
That is a line from John Cruz's popular "Island Style" song.

emoticon FINAL EXAM emoticon
Next week is the final session for my Beginning Ukulele class. I told them there was no "Auditing" the class, everyone gets the exam:

QUESTIONS INCLUDE
1. We've been playing CHORDS for 7 weeks... WHAT IS A CHORD?
2. Name three things that V7 chords do for us.
3. Describe minor chords.
4. KEEP THE BEAT: What is Common Time? How many beats per measure? Waltz Time? 6/8 time means what?

PERFORMANCE (We play)
1. “All My Loving” It has most of the chore chords we’ve been learning.

2. Classic Ukulele: “Ain’t She Sweet ~ Five Foot Two” aka "Ode to the V7 Chord"

3. “12 Bar Blues” We're going to have a jam! Know the pattern and strum.

4. Play “Island In The Sun” using the Island Strum pattern.

emoticon Then we're having a Kanikapila for the rest of the class

Talked myself into starting a " Ukulele Fest ~ Kanikapila," on June 5th
It is the kickoff for the Summer Concert Series in the Park. Two + hours long.
emoticon
I've lined up four or more local ukulele groups who will showcase their program then lead everyone is several group strums. Then I've got an Hawaiian Trio who's leader has a house full of young Keiki hula dancers who will dance while this band plays. I'm sticking them in the middle of the groups. And to end, I have a large group of hula ladies with their small band. I'm giving them 30 minutes to end the afternoon's program, Grand Finale!!!
emoticon emoticon
emoticon Crazy, I talked myself into doing this. No one pushed me into it. ???? emoticon
But, is should be a fun event.

We are half way through this 8 week "Introduction To Ukulele" class. Tonight the class meets the Bb chord. This will allow us to play songs in the key of F !!!

I admit I thunked that chord for 50 years and hated it. "Ukulele Mike" Lynch was the one who gave me the insight into properly fingering it: "Get your wrist forward, and open it up." Yes, there is a tendency to pull back, get tight and the thunk strings. Now I rarely have trouble with it. Thanks Mike

Dementia Prevention

Yes, 3/4 of the class are in the 60+ age range with a couple 80 year olds. We're all working at dementia prevention, and having fun doing it.
emoticon
At the other end I have a teenager in both classes. The fifteen year old in the evening class missed the first class because he mom had the wrong day in mind. Mom contacted me, upset and wondering what she could do. I invited them to my home for a catch up lesson. And when we sat down for the lesson I handed Mom a ukulele, too. "Your not going to just sit there." Mom love it, joined the class and is one of my more enthusiastic students.

I've had a couple weeks of Steel Drum class now and its great fun and a learning experience. This time around I'm on the 6 Bass because generally I'm interested in working on the Bass part of music and expanding my skills in this area.

I also got asked to join the Intermediate Band and play "Yellow Bird" with them on my marimba. I did this with a steel band 5 years ago. It will be fun. I'll take my little 2.5 octave marimba. Much much easier to transport than the big old 4 octave Deagan Imperial marimba.

And, in the other sector of my busy musical life I've got two beginning Ukulele classes to teach on Tuesdays with a total of 39 students. Getting people stated playing music is big positive for me. Watching them blossom and begin to really understand some of the elements of music, not just hearing a melody. +++
