Everyone practicing their ukulele regularly? It is the ONLY way to improve.

I've been working on Chord Melody. I got Ukulele Mike's Chord Melody Arrangements book and have been working on a couple of his arrangements.

Also, It is the time of year to play the old popular standard: "Autumn Leaves" (Most recorded jazz standard in the world) Besides playing it with a shuffle strum try it playing with your thumb and pluck some of the strings to bring out the melody and enhance your strum.
And, If you need a ukulele arrangement I can email you one.

Happy Strummin'

The first Beginner Ukulele class of Fall is over, six weeks long. Now I get almost a month before starting classes again. Taking this time to work on some of my own skills. Trying some of Ukulele Mikes Chord Melody arrangements.

Beginning Ukulele

I'm now planning the final class of our beginning 5 week series. = emoticon

While the primary emphasis has been on getting people strumming three chords, (C,F, G7), we have now introduced at least 11 chords for the faster students. Still, the emphasis is on getting them strumming those three chords. This week I added an Am. That Am allows us to do four chord songs, "Doo Wop" and more.

I've taken the verses from a half dozen different hit four chord songs of the 50's- 60's and made them into a medley that just uses those four chords; C, Am, F, G7. Fun to play/sing those oldies, and without having to deal with their more difficult bridge sections.

Happy strummin'. emoticon

23 sign up ahead of time. BUT, 7 more showed up to get in the new ukulele class = 30.

Fortunately, I had three assistants to help them get started playing ukulele. We had most of them strumming along on several songs.

LEARN UKULELE

More ukulele students. I think this class may reach 25, again. I had to print more class books for the overflow. It is fortunate I have a couple people to help me with the new students. 25 is too big for one person to work with.

And the City Recreation Department wondered if I could get four students, their minimum sized class.

I'm teaching a new Beginning Ukulele class through the city recreation department on Thursdays. . Full class already signed in, 20 students, plus more wanting in.

The ukulele is back and rolling along. People want to learn this instrument.
Thanks, Iz and Jake for helping bring it back. Forget Tiny Time who helped kill it.

We had two couples visiting us for five days. They were ukulele players, too. So we had lots of fun strumming together.

Nice group at the kanikapila yesterday. Much of the strumming was lead by a cousin of "Izzy". It lasted a couple hours.

I don't know Hawaiian or the words to most of the songs that were sang. But I enjoy the melodies and the strum rhythms. Its fun to join the strum

Singing The Blues emoticon

We had our Fun Strum here today, and singing Blues. Good fun. Played a total of 20 song that included lots of 12 bar blues songs.

Not as big a crowd as two weeks ago. Many people had other activities going on, Summertime.

Tomorrow is Kanikapila Sunday at the local Hawaiian coffee house. Another fun strum of a mix of island type songs.

We got 22 strummers into our patio room yesterday for a ukulele strum. Had the theme of "Summertime" so we started with songs with summer words or themes. Ended in a general strum of Play Along type songs without music sheets to look at, just follow the simple chords, sing the words if you know them. In 1 3/4 hours we had strummed 20 different songs.

Fun Strum

The four ukuleles we bought on Maui make up the 'ukulele flower' that is the picture for this site. Mine is that light colored (spruce front) vita shaped one, The spruce front gives it a loud bright sound.

This year we spent May on the big island . I took my favorite Concert uke with me and enjoyed playing at several public kanikapilas in Kona. I did buy another uke: A mini soprano, a pretty little blue one with hibiscus flowers,
Cost me $1495
??? emoticon

Oh, needs a decimal. It was $14.95 at Kmart.
Yes, after I got it tuned in it plays. The fingerboard is so small I have trouble getting the correct frets. Its a fun little souvenir.

No, I didn't. Sounds like a great shop. We mostly swam and snorkeled, and enjoyed good music at our resort and some of the restaurants we went to. I can see why you'd want to buy more..there are lots of good looking and good-sounding ukes out there!

Did you stop by the Mele Ukulele store in Wailuku. Last year four of us stopped here. NONE of us needed another ukulele. But we all can away with a new ukulele. My wife got a pineapple shapped soprano, I got a Vita shaped soprano. Her pineapple has become her primary instrument.

I play the Vita soprano when I want a soprano with that high Rentry tuning. Mostly I play a Concert or a Tenor with a low G..

And, today was Kanikapila Sunday at the Red Dirt Coffee House.

There was a nice group there playing a mix of Hawaiian songs. As a HaoIe, it is fun to let the Hawaiians sing the Hawaiian lyrics and to just follow the chords and strum along. Matching their strums is part of the fun.

Having a "Fun Strum" here at the house this afternoon. Eighteen people have said they are coming. Should be a crowd and we'll move to the outside patio.

"Island Fever" is the theme. We're doing songs from both Carabbean and Hawaiian islands and another tropical Change in Latitude for the Parrotheads. Simple stuff, mostly three chord in C so our beginner can join in and have fun. Also playing F, G, and A, something for more improved strummers.

I missed your earlier question.

The Live Oak Music Festival is in the mountains above Santa Barbara, CA. It happens over the Father's Day weekend. We live an hours drive away, on the coast near San Luis Obispo, CA. We attend the music festival most years. It helps support our local public radio station.

Peace, Love, Dirt; a festival motto. This year with it being so dry it was REALLY dusty. We camp at the festival in our trailer. Thurs. - Monday

I'm back on the wagon after almost three months of travel, eating way too much and too much sitting. Yep, 8+ pounds worth. I've dropped a couple now that I back in the Spark groove.
emoticon

I came back playing several Hawaiian songs including Koke'e. However, the song that really also stuck with me was a 1970's Kris Kristofferson song: "Help Me Make It Through The Night." A guitar player was strumming it at a kanikapila and it stuck with me
.
"Help Me Make It Through The Night."
I've put together an arrangement in C. It is basically a three chord song C, F, G7, with three additional chords: a Dm, and C7, D7 to complete the bridge. It is available, if anyone wants a copy let me know. It includes a page of six different strum patterns that can be use to play the song. I'm using it with a beginner group I'm assisting with for a couple weeks.

Aloha'oe Richard

Playing ukulele isn't necessarily about practicing. Just play and have fun! emoticon

Welcome back, RICHE. Sounds like a fun trip!

I'm feeling kind of sheepish....I haven't practiced ukulele for a few weeks. I need to set a time to play it. It's fun, once I get over that rustiness.

Back home after a 6 week RV trip to Texas.
It gave me time away from my groups where I could just do my own thing with the ukulele. Nothing fancy. I practiced my picking with both 3/4 and 4/4 songs. Hard on the old fingers and brain, especially switching between picks. Also strumming some jazz standards with interesting jazz chords. A bit more of a challenge that three chord songs. ;)

Time For Me

It is good to be through leading classes and group strums for a while. (No classes until Fall.) Now I can focus on my own skills and enjoy working on some songs I want to play. Being in a teacher or leader mode keeps you busy just trying to keep up with the class/group you are in front of. Gotta practice what I'm leading.,

Now it is time for me! emoticon

Yes, I know about attending groups that are ahead of me. Or, at least I need a chance to practice some of the songs before I joined the group's strum. It is good when strum groups give you a head up on what they will be playing if the song are more that four chord songs.

THE ZEN CHORD
You can and should play the Zen Chord when you unable to keep up with the chords in the song arrangement. It helps you keep the beat and adds rhythm to the group's strum. Come back in when you reach chords you can play.

The "Zen Chord" ??? Yep, lightly mute your strings with your hand so they just give a thunk, and keep strumming.

Uh oh, I'd be in big trouble if I had to lead! emoticon

The class that I'm in is now officially over my head. But that's ok, I can still hang out in the back and just strum on the chords I do know. Slow and steady, I guess...

The ukulele classes ended last week and it felt good to be done and free. Except, I got asked to lead the local strum group this Sunday. The regular leader is unable to do it this month. So, back up front again.

I've been leading ukulele strums regularly for the past couple years. But, I'm not really comfortable being the band leader. I'd rather sit in the back row and just follow. What price glory!

I'm off to teach the last Beginning Ukulele class for this five week session. Then tomorrow night we're holding a Fun Strum with both this beginning class and the last session for the Continuing class. Should be a fun ending for both classes.

Jake Shimabukuro Concert

Jake had a great concert last night. Much better than his concert here a year ago. This one was musical. He showed his skills and the instruments qualities through a number of genre. A year ago his program was mostly technical, showing off Jake's tremendous strumming skills. But, by the end I was tired of the improvisation and running the scales.

Last night we enjoyed the music.
Thanks Jake, Great Performance. emoticon

This concert ukulele is one I've had for 10+ years. It has been the principal ukulele I play, although I have a collection of over a dozen ukes. It just began not to sound as good. Have a friend who recently tried a half dozen different string on his expensive ukulele. He found he like the Worth strings the best and gave me a set. So, I switched to the new strings and like them.

I still like Aquila strings and have them on most of my ukuleles. When I have someone with an inexpensive ukulele complaining about how it sounds I suggest they spend $8 and try new Aquila strings before they buy a new ukulele.

I wish I had been playing the uke as long as you. Unfortunately, I have only had mine a year and haven't even had to change the strings yet. But I know my day is coming. I will take your information to heart. Thanks!

I had some old Aquila string on my Concert ukulele that had gotten so they would not hold tuning.. They also sounded tired. A friend gave me some Worth Fluoro Carbon strings.

I'm a long time Aquila fan, But, I really like these new strings.

I liked Pete Seeger and his music. I find that lots of songs that I enjoy playing over and over were his. They just make me feel good!

Pete Seeger was a banjo player.

Tonight when my ukulele class played our tribute to Pete Seeger, I played my banjo ukulele for "Where Have All The Flowers Gone."

Sorry Mr. Seeger, I'm not much of a banjo player. But, you were remembered. RIP

*** PETE SEEGER - DEAD AT 94 emoticon

I sent my ukulele classes an arrangement of "Where Have All The Flowers Gone" (1955), by Mr Seeger. We will perform it at the classes this week in his memory. Maybe also his "If I Had A Hammer,' 1949, too.

He was a major influence in bringing the folk songs forward into the 1950's and 60s' Yep, protest songs and all.

RIP Pete Seeger! emoticon And thank you so much!
