I am finally able to change chords more smoothly. I really like arpeggio and picking. I'm sort of getting better at that too.. Just can't get the hang of the clawhammer!! But I'll get it.. I really need to find a Ukulele group or group of people that play together that can offer some input! :D

I just bought a new book called "Fiddle Tunes for Ukulele". What a totally awesome book. I also just received an electric Luna Ukulele. Now I can use my amplifier! Woohoo!! I have now learned to count too. I've been busy. LOL

I found a Mel Bay Learn to play finger style solos for Ukulele book. It's awesome. It comes with a cd, but wish it were a dvd. They just start playing, no count or anything at the beginnings. But that's okay. I can play a few songs now, using plucking and chords. Totally fun! I am selling my Epiphone electric guitar so I can buy a more expensive Ukulele with a plug in! I have an awesome amp that just needs to be used. LOL

I am learning some plucking now too! How cool. I'm not sure how to peruse them while playing though. The instructions I have in my Uke book don't show a video of him playing utilizing the plucking of the chord. I'll get it one of these days. :D

My chords are becoming more smooth. I bought a songbook called "The Daily Ukulele" and there are over 365 songs in it! Some I've never heard of before, but I know a lot of them...or at least the tune of them. I have been trying to work on chords and remembering them. So far I feel more and more confident in my playing! WooHoo. I've been using the metronome too...but sometimes I get stressed using it because I can't seem to get speed on the Em chord and a few others. But, I am persistent and very determined to play better. :D

A friend and I took an hour drive to another community to strum with a new start up ukulele group.. They meet in a music shop, about a dozen of us including a bass play and a drummer helping the group keep time and adding in rhythms.
It was a fun strum. emoticon

Had fun sitting in and trying to strum with the "Island Connection" band that backs the ladies hula group. I knew some of the songs and did fine on them. Others where I was trying to see another players music were a bit of a problem at times, especially when they had two sets of chord showing because they do a modulation during the song.

Overall, it was a fun, challenging strum. emoticon

We had eight musicians playing for eleven ladies dancing. This group does a public performance next Monday evening. It will probably be the regular core band of four playing. Us add on players are not ready for the real thing. We'll watch.

Been a fun ukulele week for me: emoticon

Kanikapila Sunday was really a fun strum. I understand the count was 28 strummers. Most of them have Hawaiian born connections and many songs were sung in Hawaiian. This Kanikapila runs the last Sunday of the month during Daylight Savings at our local Red Dirt Coffee House. Six of the group were former beginning students of mine and it was great to see them out getting involved with their ukuleles!

Wednesday, I was asked to visit a new ukulele group at a retirement center. It turned out all six players were former Beginning Ukulele students of mine, so I was back in the teacher mode.

emoticon Thursday night, I went to a practice for the local Hula dance club; nine ladies dancing. Their "band" consisted of three regular Hawaiian musicians. Another friend and I tried to keep up with them. I knew a couple songs, otherwise it was a play by ear exercise. Had a fun time playing and got to watch the dancers, too.

Always fun with a ukulele in hand! emoticon

I just bought a Soprano Ukulele on Amazon. It is a complete kit with a lesson book, new strings and a soft case. I am so excited. I've always wanted the smaller Ukulele. I have a Baritone but I have to reach for a lot of the chords. I am looking forward to learning this instrument.

Stuck my new plastic uke in my suitcase and took it to New Zealand with me. Had it to entertain myself in the evenings after a busy day touring. This was a Bird Watching tour and on some long drives on our bus I lead the group in singing a couple bird type songs. Then we had some fun at our final farewell dinner. Creative verses sung to known melodies.

The ukulele accompaniment really helped keep the group in tune and together (timing) in our sing-alongs. Durable little instrument in a simple gig bag, I didn't worry about it being easily damaged. Great way to enhance an activity.

The company is BugsGear out of Portland, OR. It is an outdoor equipment dealer specializing in mountain climbing gear. These plastic ukuleles are an added line for the outdoor seekers to take along their music. Their retail price is about $70 retail, comparable with some other new plastics on the market. For that price, I'm happy with the sound of these ukuleles, quite comparable to the better wooden ukes at this price.
BugsGearUkulele.com.

The good news is that the company accepts it as their mistake and are sending the correct ukulele. :0) Plus, I can keep the Pink one. So, my wife has one too.

PLASTIC UKULELES emoticon

I did it. I ordered one. It was suppose to be Candy Apple Red.! emoticon

They sent a Flamingo PINK one. emoticon My wife says it is not my color.

Otherwise, the folks I've shown it to are surprised how well it sounds and plays. Equal to or better than the other wooden $70 ukuleles they know.

I'm trying to get the wholesaler to correct their error and either send me the Candy Apple Red or a Cobalt colored ukulele.

more latter................

Fear not, I still love my wooden ukuleles, a Koa Concert is always my go to ukulele.

Sorry about the emoticon I only have 1 right now It is Zebra wood I love it, I was thinking like maybe for the weather or if it was a kid (not sure if this was what they really wanted, or if they were tough on it) Because I had a daughter that was in band She played clarinet (wooden), but in the parades we had to buy a plastic one, because of the cold it was really bad for it. I guess that was what I was thinking of emoticon

Plastic Ukuleles
I started a discussion on a Ukulele Affectionados blog. I'm getting some interesting reactions:

Plastic NEVER!!!
No real musician would consider playing one
Those nasty plastic things are going to flood the market.

And on the other side:
I've got one, Throw it in my car and I'm ready to strum wherever I go.
We got them in Australia, Have several, and really enjoy them.
Great to have and be able to take anywhere and have fun strumming.

Wonder what other reactions I'll get as time goes on. emoticon

Personally, I love my wood ukuleles. Always my first choice, except..
When I'm in an inappropriate environment for a good wooden uke a durable plastic uke makes sense. Love to strum .... I go with the woman above who keeps one in her car.

emoticon GO UKULELE

Did you notice that yesterday was World Ukulele Day ? emoticon

Plastic ~ All plastic Ukuleles emoticon

Several companies are marketing all plastic ukuleles that are not damaged by leaving them out in the snow or under water or in the sun.

BugsGearUkulele. com is a mountaineering company that is selling one to take on the trail with you.

Makala has a Waterman plastic uke they are now marketing. At NAMM they had one on display underwater in an aquarium. They are suppose to replicate the plastic ukes of the 1950's. But, better built with newer plastics and special strings.

[I had one of those plastic ukes in 1954, and then sold it to a friend and taught him to play it, 60 years later he now has an Oscar Schmidt concert he plays when his life isn't tooo busy]

A uke for all weather. Keep it in your car for any occasion. $60

emoticon

Visited the NAMM show at the Anaheim Convention Center. It filled then entire center, four floors worth of musical equipment, accessories, and musical electronics. We only did two floors Saturday. Too much stuff and way too loud with all the instruments being demonstrated. That was expecially true on the main floor with Ludwig and other drum manufactures displaying their drum sets.

I visited about a dozen ukulele manufactures/distributer companies. Also, stopped at a Marimba display and played their five octave rosewood marimba as well as their synthetic bar marimba. Rosewood is by far the better sound.

Another Full Ukulele class. emoticon

The ukulele has become so popular that it is easy to have a full class with more wanting into the class. This will be a seven week class that I might extend to eight weeks.

Another Beginning Ukulele Class starts Thursday. Looks like 15 to 20 new Ukers. *

I've got to get my latest revised "Simple Strummin'" class songbook printed. But, since the cost is almost what I sell them for I'm waiting to see what the final signup will be before I have them printed.

More Happy Strummers !!! emoticon

* I had wanted a class of 15, the City wanted to have it open for 20 or more.
Last Fall's class had 31 new strummers. emoticon Way tooo big, even with my three assistants. So, this smaller class will be nice.

Had the fun of strumming along with the music for a hula dance club last night. The "band" included the lead singer/ guitar player, who is their regular music player, and three of us sit in and strum along (as best we can) ukulele players.

I'll never be a Hawaiian singer!!! But, I can be part of the instrumental group. Most Hawaiian songs are relatively simple chording. I'll have to work on my 'Olapa' strum though. It is an often used Hawaiian strum pattern = UD D D
Now do it fast!!!!

The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain will be touring California in January, from San Diego to Arcata. (Also in Boston, Salt Lake City and Mesa AZ.)

Gig Calendar:

They are a fun group to watch perform! Been together for something like 25+ years. I had the pleasure of doing a small workshop with them and then watching them perform at Cal Poly, SLO, CA last year.

Went to a Slack Guitar concert last evening. Very enjoyable Hawaiian and Christmas music slack guitar style.

Also the local hula group performed as part of the concert. This was the group that I'd gone to their practice and strummed along with their lead guitarist on Thursday night. Hey, they asked me to come back and support their guitarist. Guess I have to learn to play a lot more Hawaiian music. Mostly simple strumming, so I can almost handle it.

Hope you had a great Thanksgiving!

I found a ukulele hanger that looks like it should work. As you posted here or on another thread, when the uke is all packed away nicely, I'm less likely to practice. Maybe if it's out, I can just pick it up for a few minutes and play. I think I've been embarrassed to have it out since I don't play well. But the only way to change that is to play more!

Glad you were able to able to play through the power outage.

Thanks for the great tips and encouragement and enjoy the weekend!

What do you do when the lights go out? emoticon

About 35 minutes into my 1.5 hour class the lights went out . BLACK !

What to do???? Should I punt??? emoticon
Fortunately a safety light came on near me and I move my music stand where it help illuminate it. Now what ???
"
This was the last class in a 10 session series. So, time to do some "play by ear.
After about 20 minutes the lights came on and I continued with some of my planned lesson only to have the lights go out again. emoticon

I'd planned to have a play by ear Christmas song addendum to the regular class.
emoticon emoticon So, we switched to that.

Finally the lights came back on and it was 8:30 PM, class was over.

Whew! emoticon

Last ukulele class session was last night.

There was a power outage and our lights went out twice or for about a third or the hour and a half class. Fun trying to teach in the dark. Time for some play by ear practice.

To keep the goal you have to keep your ukulele out and accessable so you can get in that minute.

Don't put it away so it takes you several minutes just to get it out.

Hey, ukuleles are beautiful! Keep it where it can be seen. emoticon

The second five class series for my beginning ukulele class started Thursday with 19 students. That is going to keep me busy until Thanksgiving. Good group, they all have some basic chords and strumming skills so we can move forward to playing in more keys and with different strum patterns.

I enjoy teaching these beginning classes. But, they keep me from focusing on advancing my own skills. But, since I'm not another Jake, I'll just stick to having fun Simple Strummin'.

Everyone practicing their ukulele regularly? It is the ONLY way to improve.

I've been working on Chord Melody. I got Ukulele Mike's Chord Melody Arrangements book and have been working on a couple of his arrangements.

Also, It is the time of year to play the old popular standard: "Autumn Leaves" (Most recorded jazz standard in the world) Besides playing it with a shuffle strum try it playing with your thumb and pluck some of the strings to bring out the melody and enhance your strum.
And, If you need a ukulele arrangement I can email you one.

Happy Strummin'

The first Beginner Ukulele class of Fall is over, six weeks long. Now I get almost a month before starting classes again. Taking this time to work on some of my own skills. Trying some of Ukulele Mikes Chord Melody arrangements.

Beginning Ukulele

I'm now planning the final class of our beginning 5 week series. = emoticon

While the primary emphasis has been on getting people strumming three chords, (C,F, G7), we have now introduced at least 11 chords for the faster students. Still, the emphasis is on getting them strumming those three chords. This week I added an Am. That Am allows us to do four chord songs, "Doo Wop" and more.

I've taken the verses from a half dozen different hit four chord songs of the 50's- 60's and made them into a medley that just uses those four chords; C, Am, F, G7. Fun to play/sing those oldies, and without having to deal with their more difficult bridge sections.

Happy strummin'. emoticon

23 sign up ahead of time. BUT, 7 more showed up to get in the new ukulele class = 30.

Fortunately, I had three assistants to help them get started playing ukulele. We had most of them strumming along on several songs.

LEARN UKULELE

More ukulele students. I think this class may reach 25, again. I had to print more class books for the overflow. It is fortunate I have a couple people to help me with the new students. 25 is too big for one person to work with.

And the City Recreation Department wondered if I could get four students, their minimum sized class.
