The weekend started 7 am Friday when I reached my meetup point for a ride to Atlanta. There were 30 from our group that went. Three of us from our BGR group rode nonstop for six hours to Atlanta. We checked into the Sheraton downtown where the event was held, then went to have lunch at Gladys Knight's restaurant. We returned to pick up our race packets and conference packets. A small expo was being held with BGR gear store, a couple of nutrition direct sales companies, Brooks, REI, Motions, Bondi Band, another headband vendor, Diva Half Marathon series, that's all I remember right now. We went straight to the BGR store and after waiting in a very long line at least an hour, made our purchases. We then went to dinner and returned to a social where we saw the BGR founders and met other BGR ladies from all over.
Day 2 we went on a 5 mile walking tour of Atlanta at 8 am, then brunch and shopping. Returned to stand in line for another hour or so for more BGR gear. We missed a couple workshops but we did get to a nutrition workshop and a really intense strength training workshop. A friend I haven't seen in 10 years came to visit with me and brought us cupcakes. Honors dinner was next where we were entertained with good food, talks by the BGR founders and an AARP rep. The speaker of the evening was Earnestine Shepard, a 75 year old body builder who also runs 10 miles a day.
Day 3 was the 5K and 10K at 7 am. I ran the 10K. There were a reported 4000 runners all together. The surprise to many were the number of steep hills, it seemed like every turn there was a hill! We finished with a great afterparty with plenty of vendor giveaways, refreshments, pictures, and dancing!
Overall, it was a fantastic weekend. I'm certainly hoping for a repeat next year!
