I agree with BABE! If you remember when you did Atkins, Dr. Atkins stress that it is lifestyle changes. He actually wanted you to get to the lifestyle of eating healthy. Remember how he stressed fresh fruits and vegetables? He pushed foods high in nutrients such as blueberries that had yet low GI. Remember? Truely, if you break down any true, good "diet" it will say that. Weight loss is simple if you just look at it as a math equation--you basically have to burn more calories than you take in. The idea is to do it healthily--to feel better and be healthy! Sparkpeople is GREAT--no make that FANTASTIC! I think we all enjoy the calorie count that sparkpeople offers and I personally love how it shows and tracks other nutrients. I have even added a fiber tracker as I want to make sure I eat enough fiber--it is soooo much easier than all the little pieces of paper that I used to try to keep track of my water and fiber intake on!! I also don't spend the time looking up all the numbers, they are instantly plugged in for me! I also like the exercise tracker! Exercise is something we especially NEED to do to be healthy the rest of our lives and to feel good. If you need the more structured plan like a "diet" does for you, then I suggest getting hooked up with a challenge group. I run a "boot camp" challenge group and it has become such a wonderful benefit. I went from a person who didn't really want to spend time bemoaning about my dieting woes with ANYONE to just really looking forward to reading about my sparkfriends and "talking" with them. They have become such a joy and such great motivators for me (and I for them as well!) One little last note...I usually tell my patients to eat like a caveman would: small amounts all through out the day--just as a caveman would eat. He would eat throughout the day as he hunted and gathered. His food would not be processed food, but natural. Most of his food would be veggies and fruit and usually raw, but then he would suppliment with meat--which of course was cooked ;-)

Good luck with your weight loss and Welcome to sparkpeople. You are in the right place and I hope you get hooked up with a great smaller group!! If you need any help feel free to sparkmail me!
Michelle

Yep, I let my emotions dictate what I ate yesterday and that didn't end up well. It is a rollercoaster ride when you're just getting started with making this lifestyle change but eventually it will stabilize to only a few bumps in the road.

Like everyone else has said, calorie counting. I calculated my own BMR and calorie range. My results closely matched those of SP so I'm following their recommendations and counting calories.

As a health professional, i learned that no diet works, they might work in the short run, but then like you the weight comes back with usually extra pounds added to it. This is about changes in your lifestyle, to give up the bad stuff and do healthier things, in balance. Its not about counting this or that, its about replacing the bad stuff with healthier stuff and to deal with your emotional bagage that make the weight come on in the first place. This is about healing, your emotions to which weight is a side effect. No use dealing with the effect without dealing with the cause.
Its about looking honestly at what and when you eat, and replacing it with 3 healthy meals and yes a snack is allowed now and then even a great big piece of chocolate cake, or ice cream sunday, because it is about balancing not depriving.

Welcome to SP and All Health Professionals!

I count them all, pretty honestly (most of the time). Well, actually, I don't count them, I just let the Spark computer program count them.

Now and then I forget something or fudge a little, but not much. The main things I pay attention to are the calorie max, the balance of fat, carbs, and protein, and certain minerals that I don't want to be without, like potassium. I eat anything I want that is consistent with the calorie max and the other key elements I just mentioned.

All the best here.

What diet works for you? Whether it counting calories or carbs. I'd like to know! About 7 years ago I went on the Atkins diet and lost 59 pounds. I was 247 and went down to 188 in a matter of months. I was only 23 back then so it was easy for me to lose the weight. I wanted to actually to go on the South Beach Diet now, but I am pretty concerned whether it is quite healthy or not. For my weight and age. I am 30 @ 240. So tell me guys and girls?? What is working for you? What diet that is?? Carol
