“There's a difference between interest and commitment. When you're interested in doing something, you do it only when it's convenient. When you're committed to something, you accept no excuses; only results.”

When you get to a plateau, think of it as a landing on the stairway to your goal. And maintenance is a lifelong plateau, so a bit of "rehearsal" for maintenance isn't the worst thing in the world

Grzollar, I have a tendency to say it straight so I hope you take this in the caring way that it is meant...

Sounds like you identified the problem as a lack of motivation. Even though I have found Sparkpeople.com to be a great tool it is not going to be the sole tool to motivate you. You need to get out and find some buddies who share your goals.

Have you looked in your neighborhood for Overeater's Anonymous meetings or TOPS meetings? These are free or low cost support groups for weight loss. Check out Meetup.com for exercise groups that are free in your area just enter a little bit of information then enter fitness groups in the search engine to find the ones close to you. Exercise does not have to be calistenics it can be fun things like playing frisbee or dancing. I myself belong to a walking group through them. You will meet a lot of great people through them too so that you can build a support system for yourself.

Can you start something through your church? I'm sure there are a lot of people in the congregation that would love to get a free or low cost weight loss and fitness support group going around you.

You said your get and go got up and went well go get it back! Find your inner strength and take ownership of your life! The woman who left you because you didn't lose weight good riddance! Look in the mirror right now and take a really good look. Because what you see there is what you are projecting out to others are you happy with what you see? Start loving yourself and what you see in the mirror then the good women will come along and see what you see in the mirror.

Hope this wasn't too harsh but it sounded like you needed a kick in the hiney.

Okay, I'll join the "whoa is me" party.

I have been teaching Jazzercise for over 5 years. I thought I pulled my calf around July. Nope, ends up I have deep vein thrombosis - the blood clots starts in my calf and grew up into my pelvis. So, how do you go from working out all the time to being told if you move too much you could die?

Just what I am dealing with. But you know what? Someone else out there has it worse. I am still alive. I am getting back into teaching slowly - and it is killing me. I want to automatically be at the level I was at before. So, I guess I have the opposite problem...

This is an interesting forum. I would say that this is the first time that I have read a post where someone just put everything on the table, it's actually kind of refreshing.
I have been dating my bf for about a year and a half. Since then I have gained almost forty pounds. He keeps telling me that all I need to do is exercise, like I don't already know. It's quite the opposite, I have a graduate (and almost a doctorate) in health and healthy behavior. I am simply not motivated. Don't get me wrong, I am not OK being overweight. The amount of clothing I am able to fit in to continues to diminish. I think their is something out there that motivates each of us individually. The trick is to find it.

I do know where your coming from and I'm sure every1 on the team has been where you are right now.I smoked for years..quit a few times..once for 7 years and then a crisis arose and I started smoking again..My asthma was getting worse..needed to use my inhaler more and still I could not stop..cigarettes were my best friend..kinda sad huh?..even seeing all my ventilator pts.didn't convince me..I needed to WANT to quit..One evening I sat at my son's baseball game and coughed for a solid 2 hours..My thought was "this is how I'm gonna die..not being able to breathe""That was enough..I quit then and there and I don't even want a cigarette now..The same happened with my weight..I realized that it makes me miserable..it affects so much of my life..so if i put that negative energy into positive energy I can win this battle!Keep positive and come here often...your not alone emoticon

GRZOLLAR, you're talking about MOTIVATION!

...and that's what I "think" I was referring to re: striking the flint till a spark flies.

That's what I do on those mornings when the LAST thing I want to do is crawl out of bed and get on the treadmill. I really want to pull the covers up over the head and take a day off.

BUT somehow I push myself to the 'mill anyhow.

How do I do that? One of my biggest motivators is negative: I beat myself up with extreme consequences with drill-sergeant, critical self-talk that scares me into action for fear that the next thing I know I'll be sliding right back into my old unhealthy patterns and gaining back all the weight I worked so hard to lose.

Positively I dangle "carrots" such as knowing that my workout will rev up my metabolism so that I burn off the calories I know I'll be consuming later in the day.

Also I tell myself, hey, if I get moving, sometimes as Newton once said "an object in motion tends to STAY in motion"...i.e. action and energy spurs MORE action and energy!

Hoping some of these ideas can help. Self-talk is an important part of motivation. What messages do you choose to give yourself when you are fishing for that "get up and go" that you misplaced...? :-)

There seems to be a miss reading I don't dislike or hate exercise, I do not like push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, jumping jacks and associated activities, called calisthenics. I like to swim, bike, roller skate, and many other things the Lymphedema in my right leg and foots have stopped.
Where can I get shoes, no a shoe, made without making me go broke in the California.
I have some psychological barriers I need to break through and soon, finding a like mind would be oh so helpful, y'all think like y'all, not like me.

My experience has been that when I make such a declaration people pull away, "well if you know so much." Stuck in my same boat.

Something I was VERY surprised to find out in my journey was that morning workouts, BEFORE my day had a chance to become crazy / busy made it SOOO much easier to get my workouts in.

And I was NOT a morning person at ALL!

But I tried it for a few times and was very pleasantly surprised to find it WORKED and it STUCK!

So I'm on my treadmill first thing every morning...after I feed the cats or else they make sure I pay the consequences...lol!

It's worth a try if you've never done this before.

Thank you Don. I am praying that I get something soon, because I just found out that my unemployment has run out and I don't know how I'm going to pay for anything. It is just starting to get even worse and I'm starting to get so discouraged. That unfortunately is having its toll with my motivation in losing weight and trying to eat healthy. I try to eat as healthy as I can, but we you are getting food from food banks, so have absolutely no control over what they give you.

I'm still trying to keep my head up and stay motivated, but it is becoming more and more difficult. emoticon

Grzollar, I get it. I work 8 hrs as a nursing supervisor and walk all over the hospital. I feel like that should be enough. But it isn't. I hate exercise as well. I am willing to eat less, but the will to exercise is practically non-existent. I have several exercise items in my basement gathering dust and am sitting here posting and thinking I should go down there and ride the bike. I will! Good luck.

Unfortunately, I don't work 12 hours, actually at this point, I'm not even working. I broke my ankle last September and was starting to get better, until they found out that I need to surgery to repair some ligament damage. I went in in March to have the surgery, they found out that I actually sheared the ligament off of the bone and they had to reattach it. Well, 6.5 months later and I am still unable to walk or stand for more than an hour or so without needing to sit down. Because of this problem, I have lost my job and have been unable to find anything else to do. I'm trying to go into Medical Transcription, but the 1st school that I went to, didn't provide me with enough training to actually find a job. So, I am still jobless.

Well, I guess I've rambled on enough about me.

Well said, Don.

It's true... if you eat less than 1200 calories a day you are doing yourself a great disservice. Your body will fight you every step of the way, and you could likely gain weight. Yup, gain weight. As foreign as that may sound, your body goes into hibernation. Slows down all the "unnecesary" processes and hangs on to every ounce. Believe me, your body will win this battle because it's goal is survival.

One thing I've found out over the past few years is that the exercise is so much more important than I ever thought! Eating well without the right physical output just slows the weigh loss process down to such a CRAWL!

Be careful re: eating too few calories, that starvation mode someone spoke of trains our body to hold ONTO our fat and makes weight loss even MORE difficult! It's sort of like a thermostat...there is a range of calorie intake that promotes optimal weight loss. Too much above AND too much below that range and we are working against ourselves.

I know it is hard to conceive of workouts being fun and enlivening...I remember the pain of feeling that way. But keep trying different activities until you find the right one for you. Think of it as though you are striking a flint against a stone, time and again until...VOILA! A spark flies off and ignites! And we're OFF and RUNNING! We've found the right activity to launch our inner fire! Once one have accomplished this one can no longer feel comfortable or "right" without our workout activity of choice!

Keep on SPARKIN' out there everybody! If you haven't yet found that workout which lights a fire beneath you, stick with it and you WILL succeed!

I work 12 hr shifts also..it's tough..2 in a row makes for very little time for myself..on my off days i've been walking..it has made such a big difference in my wt.loss..I did the whining too.."i'm NOT eating too much!..I can't exercise...not enough time etc etc..."I came back to Sparkpeople and have decided to give it my all..to allow the obsession..I was amazed at the calorie counts now that I am paying attention..tracking everything..I was fooling myself..I WAS eating too much. The best thing about food I have found is to cut the carbs..not compltely but have more protein.Protein keeps blood sugar more even so cuts out the "binge"feeling because my blood sugar dropped too fast..whew..shhhh..I'm done..lol..Have a great day..stay positive..gail emoticon

I can somewhat relate. I work 12 hour streaches.
Our Dr at work constantly bickers at us. "Work isn't exercise"... and Im like...Then you stay for 12 hours and lift these people and run up and down the hall for 10 to 11 hours out of your shift and tell me it isn't exercise. After being on my feet for 12 hours running here there etc...last thing i want to do is exercise when i get home.

Or i look in the mirror and wonder for all the running we/i do at work why were not all a size 2.

I've frustrated lately when i look at my calorie intake. I'm eatting alot of food...or at least i feel that way. Lately i've only been averaging 900 calories. My nutrionalist at work stresses to us at work on a diet that anything less than 1200 calories your body goes into starvation mode and stores all you eat.

Im not lazy just exhusted.

(stepping off my soap box now)

I feel like that.
It may not be true.
Yet, I feel like that.
I ask a question or pose a statement about me.
The answers I get are the 'pat answers", the same ole yokum, drivel I have heard a zillion times, and none of it focused on me.
General answers, 'push away from the table', 'eat less', 'exercise more' and yada yada.
Been there, done that, read the book and saw the movie.
I need help.
Why doesn't anybody understand me?

I have issues unique to me.
I hate calisthenics, I really don't eat that much, I am averaging less than 1200 calories a day.
I will exercise but stuff gets in the way, my 24 hour membership is not used as regularly as it should be.
Now it is no work/money, high gas and apathy.
I can overcome apathy but are you going to give me gas money?
Ya, I thought so.
I just lost a woman who felt I was not serious about losing weight, in my life I have lost (and gained) more than she weighs. I got the knowledge and know the techniques but when your knees say SIT DOWN, that is what you do. I had a choice work or exercise. I walk in my job, some days 12 hours non-stop (no joke). I sweat profusely and I can forget to pee, and eat, I only drink when dehydration sets in, yeah 12 hours straight, ER's can be like that.

I am not looking for a response to me (if you just must okay).
I want other who feel the same to share their testimony of ache. Who knows maybe I will not feel so alone?

Tell your story.
