Hello everyone - Thank you for all of your VERY helpful input! I saw my GP this AM and he said it didn't look too serious, but put me on a big dose of antibiotics for two weeks to be safe. Today it looked more bruised than just dark & puffy. And it wasn't warm anymore, nor had it spread at all.

Incidentally, I also woke up w/a sore throat that turned out to be thrush. Yippee for me. I hate oral thrush, it's a nightmare to get rid of. One dr once said "Gargle with listerine." And I'm thinking, "You've never had this have you??" LOL

Again - thanks for everyone's concern & input. If anything changes I'll let you know, but I think we've got it... He also gave me a steroid shot for the thrush (was having trouble swallowing) & that worked wonders!

Stay calm and carry on.

Train,

Sorry, I did not get your name previously, I quickly wrote when i read the symptoms you were describing. Now that I saw the pic, go and see the doctor. That looks like the start of cellulitis /MRSA! Better to catch it now. DO NOT scratch it anymore! My son did the exact same thing till where he scratched it so much it spreaded up his arm and was hot to touch!!!!! Thats when i knew he had MRSA! Please let me know what you find out but I see it everyday at work and it can be fatal if not tended to immediately. Take Care! kim

Wow!!!! I did not get the name of who was asking the question, but PLEASE go to the doc and have it checked out for MRSA!!!! This is that so called "Superbug". We had a couple of people die from this mistaking it for a spider or tick bite! And once it gets out of control and systemic it is very little that they can do. My son had it as well and he picked at it thinking that it was a sore of some sort. It was very warm to hot and raised and reddish in color! Please have it ruled out ASAP!!! If they dont do it make them do it and dont have them jsut treat you either, get it confirmed. Also make sure they give you something for your nares because if that is what it is and they take care of it the portal site can stay dormant in the nose. Tehy usually prescribe an antibiotic ointment for prophylaxis measures.
Some Drs. blow it off like mine did and just assumed it was Mrsa without doing labs, thank goodness that i am a Med Tech and did it myself as well as for a senstivity pattern to make sure that he was taking the correct antibiotic and I showed this to the doc at my sons next visit! He was indeed surprised. This MRSA is a contact isolation precaution and can be spread so WASH HANDS and other areas of concerns......Good Luck!!!! Kim

I had a friend once who moved from Texas to Florida - and guess what they brought with them?

Yep the ole spider. Took lots of spraying of chemicals to get rid of them.

Good luck with the doc. You are going right? Brown recluse aren't in my area either but, one of my patients ended up with a bite. After ignoring it for 2 weeks she needed surgery. Not trying to scare you just making sure you don't ignore it

Well, I'm seeing the orthopedist tomorrow, he might have some input. Although I doubt it, he'll likely defer to the GP. But it would be nice to combine the visit/issue (having an MRI read for re-injury to lft knee/post-OATS graft dislodgement or ACL injury?)

I've had Lyme disease before & was successfully treated (multiple (-) titers inc. spinal fluid), would hate to do THAT all over again.

We live in tick central (near the mtns & house surrounded by woods) & had a warm winter last year (so bigger population) - even w/treatments to the cats & dog we still find those teeny tiny ticks on them. Geesh.

Stay calm and carry on.

The circle around it is a sign it might be a tick bite as are your other symptoms. I second (or third maybe) getting a lyme disease test having had the disease for several years from a similar bite.

Just out of curiosity, could you have been bitten by a tick? Spent any time out in tall grass/weeds or in the woods? If so, definitely get to a doctor!

I get a bruise every time i get a sting from a horse fly or something close to that kind of a critter. I now keep benedryl with me all the time as well as the topical hydrocortisone cream. I don't like using the stuff but when i get bites like these i swell up a bunch. LIfe with allergies! thank goodness I don't have to take them often.

Thanks - I am taking benadryl, altho it doesn't itch, maybe it will slow or stop the reaction from spreading. This AM it is still the same size, so maybe it's not going to get any bigger. None-the-less, a visit to the GP wouldn't hurt! I'll just feel silly if they tell me it's a bruise LOL

Stay calm and carry on.

might be the start of an allergy... to insect bites
i would suggest trying some systemic benadryl (taken by mouth) if you cna tolerate it and se if it has any effect
the doctor's visit would probably be a good idea!

Won't hold anyone to this, but have a question regarding an insect bite I received recently.

It started out like a mosquito bite. Itchy, but I didn't feel the initial bite. Now it's got a large, dark circle around it, sort of like a bruise, but not so dark. It's warm to touch, tender, and the bite itself doesn't show any signs of infection. Have had low-grade fever X 2 days, loss of appetite, fatigue, chest pain, nausea. Does this sound like a spider bite to anyone else?

Brown recluse spiders are NOT endemic to this area (in spite of lore), we're too far north & east. Black widows are supposed to make you sick straight away, and I can't think of any other spiders in this part of Virginia (Northern Piedmont region) that would cause this sort of reaction. So could it be secondary infection because of scratching at the bite?

I'm giving it one more day to begin to subside or will go to my doctor's after hours clinic... still, wondering if anyone has any ideas ??? I've posted a photo on my sparkpage. Thanks emoticon

Stay calm and carry on.
