Am i in the right area?

I am unsure as to if this is where I can go for this type of help as I am very new to signing up and becoming a member. I need some assistance as to how i can lose this weight. I have a lot of muscle in my arms, legs and thighs, resulting in them being big. I am confused as to how to go about it. Do I do cardio, to lose the fat? or do i do toning exercises? I feel that if you do weights and stuff, they will only get bigger, which i don't want. What do i do?

I apologise if this thread is in the wrong section...

Hi Andrea,
The last time I experienced such hunger.. I was adviced to eat high fibre, high water content foods.. that is low calory density foods.. that you can eat lots of without increasing the calory content.. also try soups for stater.. lots of cucumber and celery.. etc etc. fill yourself up.. with low calory foods ...not just plain water alone.
Good luck.

Help please....

Yesterday I was feeling extra hungry so I ate about 200 calories more than I usually do, and did a work out. At 3AM I woke up feeling kind of hungry, but I didn't want to eat in the middle of the night, so I had some water hoping it would help.

When I woke up this morning I was really shakey and anxious feeling, and it has gotten better after breakfast. Now at lunch I have eaten and I am still feeling hungry. Do I need more water? Missing a nutrient?

Go back and start with your goals. Look at it as another "New beginning"...and don't wreck yourself with guilt. You can do it! New goals, new trackers, new positive affirmations. And consider finding some new person in your circle of friends who would benefit from Spark and bring them in along side you for motivation side by side!

Good Luck!

I came here looking for help .. Help !!!! I have back slided in very big way . I went on a one month’s leave in the month of April and I went to visit my mother and many other of my family members and relatives. I even ended up at my aunt’s cattle post and farming land… where I was at least there able to put in some serious farm work.. I had packed with me my dumbbells and printed out strength training exercises.. The problem is I was never able to establish any kind of routine so I lost my momentum .. I am back in my usual surroundings, back in my house .. I have been trying hard to pick up where I left off and it just not happening.. Somebody help me.. How do I get back on the saddle.. My wait is already creeping back.. I am loosing the progress I had made a month ago.

Good thing about sparkpeoples.com is when you open the comments there is always something to pick up. So I will go down the stairs when I go out the building its only four floors, but it will be something.

Anniemac...Your message about choosing "which floor to get off on" struck a cord. When I went on vacation with my sister and SIL in Mexico we were on the fourth floor of the hotel. Everyone would wait for the elevator. I realized that if I started walking up one floor and increased each day I'd be walking the entire four floors. I Never thought that coming down would be beneficial as well (a different set of leg muscles). After your post I am going to be mindful of the many options available. It doesn't have to be A:: OR NOTHING. Something is better than nothing!

I've quickly learned when eating out it's nearly impossible to eat as well as I'd like. So I stick with portion control. I don't clean my plate (thank goodness for doggie bags), I split with my hubby, avoid fried, watch the bread intake, and then, honestly, just savor. :)

NEVER give up.....you're worth the fight. I've fallen but what got me to my 40lb weight loss was that I always got back up. You can get off the elevator at any floor, you don't have to go all the way down. Remember you have the control over your choices...be empowered.

Having a rough several days. Pretty sure it's hormonal and probably job change stresses, but still having the same difficult outcome. managing to still exercise some, but food choices have not been stellar. I know I'm doing it yet I get angry and do it anyway. Trying to reach out not close down.

Here's my panic... I am going to meet up with some friends for lunch... normally, not a reason to panic since I can always choose something lower in fat. however, today they have chosen Chipotle! I have printed out their nutritional info, and Wow! I am shocked. I haven't lost that much weight, but I am losing inches, which is more exciting to me right now. I just keep telling myself, this isn't too bad, and I was eventually gonna be challenged, but ugh! how to chose wisely at this restaurant. emoticon

Hi,
When you sign up at SP they give you a tentative exercise schedule. They try to keep it basic so that you do not feel overwhelmed, especially if you are not very active to begin with. Did you sign up recently at Sparkpeople?
For me it is hard to tell you how much you should exercise, it depends on your level of fitness and health. I started SP at the beginning of January 2010. Initially I did not exercise, just walked a bit here and there. When I was getting close to 180 lbs I had to bump it up in order to prevent a plateau. Plus, I noticed that I was losing muscle mass and I was not happy about that. After that I found the C25K group/ program and I think it has helped me a lot. I go jogging 3 to 4 times per week, 3 days for 1 hour (my jogging speed is slow but my endurance is pretty good) and now I am doing one short day for a "speeding up" run. On the other days I go for fast walks with the dog. The C25K program takes you gradually from couch potato (which I very much enjoyed) to being able to run a 5K.
The rate of weight loss depends on too many factors. Pre-existing medical conditions can make weight loss a bit slower, as you know, but you want to get healthier and work at it regardless, trying hard not to get discouraged.
I try to eat healthy meals and several healthy snacks so that I do not get too hungry. Also, I try to figure out when the portion is sufficient instead of excessive (which I used to do). I try to be patient with myself and I try to exercise or just move and walk whenever I get a chance.
Best of luck with your healthy journey. You can do it!
P.S. I also added you as a friend. I think we can be supportive to each other.

You are very welcome. We are both coming from similar weights. If I can do it, you can do it too. NEVER lose hope, and do not lose trust in yourself. I know it is hard sometimes, but keep your eye on the positive things that you are doing and in your long term goals.
After you are in SP for a while they help you fine-tune the portion sizes. That helped me lot.
All the best and always know that you can do it.

DRASADAF please be patient with yourself. Sometimes the scale is not our best friend and we cannot let it become a tyrant.
Think of all the good and healthy things that you are doing for yourself, be persistent and patient. Sometimes the measurements drop before the weight does. Try not to get fixated on weight only.

Its like riding a bicycle, if you fall off just get right back on and try again. Most fall off several times before they can ride well, and even then they have the occasional wipeout but are olympian riders. You're just on your way to your personal olymics. emoticon

So I almost completely fell off the wagon this weekend. Ate half a pizza when we took my daughter to Chuck E Cheese on Saturday and ate about 20 oz of sirloin steak last night for dinner. Definitely some stress eating there. Back on track so far today. Wish me luck folks. I'm not giving up yet.

Ouch and sorry....
I, too, am having to learn to deal with certain family members and acknowledge how I deal with the stress they create/I allow them to create....
So you didn't bat an eye at that stuffed potato and half a piece of pie. How many calories did you actually consume? It was one event and that won't generally knock you off your program. AND most importantly, YOU recognized what happened and are exploring the trigger! My bet is that you have learned something and will be able to recognize this type pothole in the future. I see a net gain, and I don't mean weight. emoticon

See the problem is I was just blind sided from out of no where (hence the description blind sided emoticon )
when I was riding back to in-laws house with my mom and I say "see their cool new porch?" to which she replies with a feigned innocent tone 'Oh, I guess they weren't happy with your father's work?" (because my father had built something else for them and apparently this binds them to using him forevermore for everything they would like done or else it means they didn't like my father's work!)I just gaped at her!!! What do I say to this?? emoticon I cannot handle the complete irrationality of this statement! SO I sat "now why would you say that??" To which she replies with a shrug. So I am immediately and completely against my will transported back to that place of emotional caretaker for my mother. I got out of the car walked in the minefield that is my in-laws kitchen and crammed a stuffed potato and half a piece of pie in my face without blinking or breathing!!! emoticon

This does not make me happy. I am rather enraged that I went back to this place and after all of my hard work!!! Aaaghh! This is why i want to GO HOME! In my home there are not (usually) irrational people saying things to me that wack me out emotionally! There is not tantalizing food waiting in the fridge until I loose it and binge!!! emoticon

I WANT TO GO HOME! I also want to hit the undo button and re-play that scene with a different outcome!

Then give to the world the best you have, and the best will come back to you! Madeline Bridges

HELP! I'm binge eating & can't seem to stop myself! It started on Monday night after I saw my GP after a strange rash appeared all over- and boy was it ITCHY!Dr D. gave me a shot of cortisone....I feel like I need to eat constantly.

For the past several months I've been off food & didn't care one way or the other - I had to drink Ensure to keep the good vit/min in my system. Now I can't stop eating. I don't know why I feel so out of control. I'm really disgusted with myself.
HELP!

Stay calm and carry on.

My antique mom, who is thin as a bird, has swelling in her ankles routinely, and that is why I began tracking potassium. It is required, with sodium, to balance cell fluids. So we are now, good thing it's summer, eating cantaloupe every day, and kiwis, and bananas, and swelling is not such a problem. Potassium is not delivered in most foods, so I added it my Nutrtion Tracker. You realy have to pay attention to it. It's not in your multi-vite. Orange juice, banana, lentils, cantaloupe, kiwis, you have to research it a little and eat those foods each day. We live in the desert, sweat a lot, lose fluids, and just adding salt isn't the correction the body needs. I say don't weigh until you are rid of the edema. It's just fluid, not fat. More important is to get the right nutrients in your body so this doesn't happen again! Blessings!

I just got back from vacation and we drove 6 hours and only stopped one time. I was originally supposed to weigh myself yesterday but was unable since we were gone on vacation. After I got home today, my feet were swollen and I think it was from sitting for so long. I was planning on weighing today but not sure if I should. I am wondering if I should go ahead and weigh? I did not have any swelling on our way to our vacation destination last week because we stopped quite a few times and I was able to get out and stretch and move. I think the swelling today is from sitting too long. I am afraid to weigh because I know that I am retaining fluid from the trip and the scale may reflect more. Should I just skip weighing myself this week and just go back to starting next Monday for weigh in?

Good luck on the triathalon! I think the swimming would be difficult. I have a pool and I swim laps sometimes, but it is exhausting very quickly. I do better just trying to walk around in it as fast as I can go.
Sounds like good advice - to stop weighing myself & getting dissapointed. I will just work out as if I am already successful. Thanks.

I'm proud of you not going for those Doritos and Oreo's! I only work out like that on my days off. I decided to train for a triathlon. I don't care if I come in last place, I just want to know I can do it and preparing will help me become more fit. I started working out in may. Just a couple times a week. Then my chiropractor suggested signing up for a 5K, I did it. Then he suggested a tri. I'm gonna do it. I try to bike, swim, or run everyday for at least 30 minutes. On my days off I try to do more, I need to know I'm not going to fall on my face when I'm racing. The hardest for me is the swimming.
I think going from no exercise to 30-45 min on elliptical or treadmill is great and your doing it 6 days a week. That is fabulous. I'm proud of you. CONGRATS on losing another pound! Awesome.
Last night my chiropractor told me to stop weighing myself and just work out and train for the triathlon and keep sighning up for different community events and try to improve on my own times. I think he's right. The scale is causing me to lose momentum. It keeps letting me down. I think working out and fighting to get in enough shape to finish a race will be a better focus for me. In the end if I keep it up the weight will naturally come off. I do believe in eating healthy though so I will continue to make healthier choices. Sorry for the long long note. Have a great day! I look forward to hearing from you again.
Sarah

Wow I am impressed with your exercise routines! Have you always been this active? Do you do that much everyday? How do you have time to work?
Great idea to plan your meals ahead of time.
I thought I was doing good recently going from pretty much no exercise to 30-45 min on the elliptical or treadmill 6 days a week & weight training 2-3 times a week.
I finally lost another pound, so I hope this is the beginning of a new weight loss streak.
I got really hungry last night - I just wanted to eat and I thought about your post. So I ate an orange, a 100 calorie snack and a cheese stick. I'm proud that I didn't go for the Doritos and Oreo's!

Thank you ms robin!!!! I'm back on track today. I'm planning out this weeks menu and will be getting it all ready for the rest of the week. I've kicked up my exercise too. I walk/jogged 3 miles this morning and then swam 1/2 a mile this afternoon, and plan on biking 10 miles this evening with a friend. tomorrow I will do a 3k and 15 mile bike ride with a girlfriend. I think the main reason I'm losing weight is the insane exercise I have come to thrive off of.
I need to mix up the meals and make them healthier so that is my goal today. Meal plan and prep for the week. Yummy tasty new dinners and lunches.
How have your last couple of days been?

Sarahpost -Congratulations on losing 10 lbs in one month- you have a great start - don't give up now! The hungriness sounds familiar to me. I get that super hungry feeling also after being on a diet for a while. I will eat anything & everything and then get so discouraged that I just give up.
I have a plan this time when I get hungry. I am going to completely change the types of foods I am eating while still eating healthy. I will not give up after messing up, I will get right back to it. Okay Sarah give it a try - if you ate chicken breast, rice & broccoli for dinner last night - really change that up tonight and try a new recipe. I just made "No Bake Mexican Casserole" last night & my family loved it. My daughter & husband both said "it doesn't taste healthy", which is the ultimate compliment for a low cal recipe. It is easy and quick - the only kind of recipe I like. I am going to try BBQ Mango chicken tonight. I get some great recipes from Spark Recipes. Check there for something you would like & try it out. Let me know- I will check back for your reply.
As far as my situation - I am still not losing weight & it is driving me crazy! I will continue to stick to a good diet & daily exercise & hope one day I'll get on that scale & will have lost 10 pounds all of a sudden. I guess I just hit a plateau really early on.

Is it possible to hit a plateau after just one week?

I just ate a hamburger & a peanut butter cookie for lunch - I feel like I am starting the downward slide because of lack of success.

I have just completed my master's degree in nursing! So I decided as a reward I will go on my first cruise in a few weeks. Of course, I want to firm up & lose some weight beforehand.
So here's my problem: I have neglected my weight issue while I was in school. I have been really working hard for the last 4 weeks now and have only lost 4 pounds, and that was in the 1st week! I have been doing the elliptical for 30 minutes - six days a week, and doing Nautilus type equipment 2 days a week and tracking all food I eat. Why have I stopped losing weight after the first week? What am I doing wrong? I am getting discouraged and I know from past experience, I end up quitting at about this point.

Okay, this may not be a panic button for others, but is has just became one for me. I hurt my shoulder. X-rays are fine so they are sending me to an orthopedic doctor for probably an MRI to look at my rotator cuff. The pain has been here for 14 days and was not better with OTC Ibuprofen, but the anti-inflamatory the doctor prescribed makes the pain better...it doesn't hurt as often and definitely not as bad. It does seem to make me realize I also have muscle soreness in my shoulder blade area I guess where I am using different muscles trying to baby my shoulder. You see it hurts to move, the natural swaying of walking, picking up my fork to eat, turning over when sleeping, everything.

So, my panic button is because I don't know what to do. I haven't been able to work out in the last 2 weeks much b/c of it. The one time I thought it was better I worked out keeping my weights light and I woke up with the next two days being so bad I broke down and went to the doctor. My help is what kind of exercise can I do that won't affect my shoulder so I don't undo all I have accomplished this year? Also, if the inflammation goes down and the pain lessens, do you suggest I still have the MRI?

I am really sorry for your situation. Everyone is different, what motivates one person may not be right for another. I mean me, put a CD on and I would dance the day away. Why don't you read some of the motivation articles. There are many of them and you may just come across one that inspires you!
Talk to your wife, tell her how you feel. Ask your mother to stop suggesting by-pass surgery to you, that you are not interested. Be honest positive about what you are doing. Remove negative thoughts from your mind, remember your family health history. You want your children to grow up with a healthy father and a role model for their eating habits. Take each day as it comes, one day at a time.
Take care,

(0230) Here I am at work. Sitting and thinking about my life. Don't get me wrong it's great. I have a wonderful wife and a beautiful baby girl with another one on its way. But I wonder.....I wonder about whats going to happen to me if I dont start sticking to a diet and exercising reg. How long will I be around. I want to be around for a long, long time; but my actions seem to say other wise.

I need to tyhink of a way to keep motivated. To keep on a diet plan that works for me. So that I can walk my daughter down the isle one day or so that I can be with my wife while in our 90's..... Thant would be great.

For some reason I just can't find the motivation or have the will power to to live a health life style and this up sets me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have so many factors against me right now. HTN, obesity. Not to mention all of the other family medical issues that run in my family. Things like CA, HTN, DM. Stuff like that. I'm also well aware that with me being so over weight there is a whole slew of other medical conditions that could start affecting my life any day now.

I know one of my biggest problems is that I dont have a goods support system. I know thats what it takes....I mean I love my wife to death, but she doesn't really help me. I feel as though I have to eat around her to reminder her that she needs to eat; after all she is eating for 2. Then there is my mom. All's I ever hear from her is go have gastric bypass surgery, because thats what she did. Well thats not for me. I've seen too many complications from people going in to have a simple surgery done.

Please someone help...I need some good advice....

Got a message back from coach Jen- spammer that left message on my spark page has been booted out of spark people for good... yeah !!! Good riddance !!! I hope they (the management) catch them all. And they will if more people turn them in when things like this occur instead of just deleting them and allowing it to continue onto others pages and mail boxes.

I had left her message on my spark page on purpose until I had been able to report her to the higher authorities, but I also had sent her a hateful spark message stating that I did not appreciate her hacking her non approved products on my spark page and making them appear as if they were endorsed by spark people, and that if I had my way, she would lose her membership and be forever banned from spark people for unauthorized use of the site and it's membership rolls. I guess she got my point because the comment was removed by her shortly after that. I don't think she anticipated that I might have copied it prior to her deleting it as proof of her misdeeds. Since you sent it to Coach Dean, I went ahead and sent it to Coach Jen. Thanks for your help in this matter. I hope anyone who misuses the site like this gets their just desserts... like getting booted off for good.

You can SparkMail Coach Dean by using: SP_COACH_DEAN
You can SparkMail Coach Jen by using: SPARK_COACH_JEN

Because I saw a duplicate post on someone else's SparkPage, I've already SparkMailed Coach Dean about this and here is his response:

Thanks--we're on it!

I've had a team member report an inappropriate marketing message from a member by the name of TEAMSPARKPEOPLE. However the message was gone when I went to look at her SparkPage. Then I saw it listed at another member's SparkPage.

However when I returned to copy and send it to you it was missing. The message was marketing some new diet approach with which Oprah and Rachel Ray have found success. I have encouraged my Team members to report this to the Coaches.

Since the messages are already disappearing I'm assuming someone has already been onto this person, but still wanted to send this just in case.

Thank you,

AAARGH!!! I get so STEAMED by these marketers...! There is such an ABUNDANCE of SNAKE OIL out there!

Absolutely SparkMail one of the Coaches...Dean, Jen, Nicole...give them the info and have them deal with this...which I'm sure they WILL!

We all have to be so VIGILANT to guard against this type of thing. If ANYONE receives a sales pitch for ANYTHING report it to one or more of the Coaches, give them the particulars and it will be dealt with.

SparkPeople is a HEALTH & WELLNESS site...NOT a cyber-exploitation JUNK site!

Don

ps...the latest buzz among these slimey (in my opinion) services seems to be about the acai berry and Reservetol. While these things may be healthy, I am HIGHLY skeptical that they are the FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH and yeild MIRACULOUS results! Be VERY suspicious and critical folks...! Keep your money in your pockets!

I had someone post the following on my spark page and it appears to be from a member who seems to be talking as though they are a "higher up" type management of Spark people... which might tend to sway members to order this product thinking that it is sponsored by spark people. The product that she is trying to sell(free samples to start) is the acai berry.

I want to know to whom I turn this member into as I think this is not what spark people is about... I did not join spark people to have its members hype their products to me and I think that they should have their membership revoked for infringing on our privacy by trying to hype all of their products.

"Greetings GMACAMI! Sparkpeople is sponsoring a new weight loss system, which has been proven to work by Oprah, Rachel Ray, and several other celebrities! This diet is hot, and everyone is talking about it! Thanks to Sparkpeople, you can now get a free trial bottle and only pay shipping and handling! This offer is ONLY valid to SparkPeople members, and is not valid long, so get your bottle today! We wish you the best success in your weight loss journey - Sparkpeople To get your free bottle, visit http://h8z.org/b7b582 today! "
The person who sent it is called SPARKPEOPLETEAM.

An unfortunate (for women) biological fact is that the great majority of times men CAN eat more calories than women.

HOWEVER! There is TREMENDOUS OVERLAP in what would constitute a healthy approach to food in your household and I would encourage you both to come to an agreement over what kinds of foods you want to choose to allow into your home.

While the QUANTITY may be different, it would make sense for the QUALITY of food choices you both make to be very similar. Sometimes when certain foods are "triggers" for one person but not for another, however, it can be helpful to negotiate a compromise.

For instance I enjoy peanut butter now and then. But my wife, for other health reasons, can't have peanut butter. I have agreed to as much as possible indulge in peanut butter whenever my wife is not around or when I'm away from my wife.

I hope you and your husband can find that acceptable "middle ground" for you so that you are both supportive of each other!

Does anyone else have ideas, suggestions...?

Yes the posting is a more visual form of accountability that some members prefer to use in addition to the tracking available on "other goals." The numbers should be the same.

Sort of.
So is the string of posts where we list minutes, etc., more for accountability?
Are we talking about the same set of minutes?

Fitness minutes are automatically logged whenever you enter your fitness minutes in on the fitness page. There is no other logging that one needs to do for that. The other two Team Goals require one to go to the "Other Goals" page at this link:

Previously, I had the fitness minute goal for this time checked. Nothing ever showed on my "other goals." Today, I added the goal r/t "good deeds." That IS showing on my "other goals." Should that not of showed? Or is the only way you can track it is on the challenge thread?
I didn't understand how it was being tracked last month. I think I have the picture now. Just want to make sure I am not missing something.

That's the attitude!

Stay in the driver's seat!

One way to remind yourself that YOU are the one in control when stress levels are up is to take a moment to focus on your breathing and gradually slow and deepen your breathing until you feel that self-control return.

Today is gonna be a challenge..lots of personal"stuff"going on and my emotions are running high..this is the place where the emotional eating kicks in..I'm determined to get through this day and stay on track..I have to keep reminding myself that my goals are for me..to get healthy..to feel more confident...to be happy with my appearance.I'm not going to let the outside forces grab hold and disrupt what I am working toward..So ..onward with my day..keep positive..keep focused and remember sometimes "it's all about me!" emoticon

One of our recent challenges has been to avoid high-calorie snacking after the last meal of the day. I'm going to shortly put out our October Challenge and renew our Team's dedication to avoid high-caloric snacking after the last meal of the day...a challenge for most of us! I know it is a toughie for me! Most weeks I've been only successful 3-4 nights. I am hoping we can aim toward being successful 6 out of 7 nights weekly, allowing one night each week for after dinner caloric snacking.

My strategy? Be sure to eat a dinner that will have "staying power," and have low or no calorie snacks readily available to quell the "munchies" should they strike. For me that includes my usual sliced, fresh bell peppers, baby spinach, baby carrots. Also I might resort to drinking more water than usual. There's also sugar-free jello or sugar-free chewing gum.

How about other ideas folks...? As we are getting ready to embark on a successfully HEALTHY October, a month which has a number of high-calorie pitfalls (donuts, cider, caramel apples, trick-or-treat candy, Halloween parties, etc.) let's see if we can arm ourselves against all of these and meet the challenge of NO-CALORIC SNACKING after our last meal of the day! (I say last meal of the day rather than dinner for the benefit of those on unusual shifts with varying meal patterns.)

I'm disappointed w/ myself. My daughter made a cake and I had some at midnight! What was I doing up so late? Couldn't sleep. I did great all day. This is why I need these teams. I have to stay focused. I'm working on some coping skills when I have the urge to eat late night. Does anyone on our team use coping skills when they want to eat and shouldn't?

I'm limited in time right now, but will give you a few quick thoughts:

If you aren't "selfish" and fail to take care of yourself, you risk running your well dry and not having any reserves left to be able to be there for others. It all begins with ourselves!

PLUS the added benefit is that by taking good care of ourselves we offer a good self care role model for others to follow!

We all have a fire inside...sometimes through extended neglect of ourselves that fire dwindles to a flicker. The better we feed our fire and show the world how it is to be ALIVE, the more positively contagious we become to others.

I'm so pleased to hear that you are seeing a therapist!

I have been seeing a therapist for a few years now and it has made all the difference in the world in helping me to take better care of myself...AND in helping me to be a better therapist for others!

Keep at it and you WILL prevail! :-)

You have MUCH grist for the therapeutic mill, in that the mistakes of the past year can offer MEGA-clues as learning how to change your course and chart it for positive, healthy territory!

So pleased you returned here...we're all behind you 1000%!

I stepped on the scales this morning and had a moment of clarity. I am back to where I was at the beginning of the year. I had lost 20 pounds and now it is all back. I am upset with myself.
After recent events I made an appointment to see a counselor because I knew that I needed extra support. I have been self medicating with food.
For those of you in the people helping field, how did you learn self care? I feel so guilty for taking care of myself.

Hey Stella,

Great to hear from you!

We are all so different that it's tough to answer your question. I think the main thing is to stay on top of things and keep tweaking your workouts and food choices until you start seeing the results you want.

Don't forget to check your measurements also. Sometimes building muscle tones us up and we're losing inches, but gaining weight as muscle is heavier than fat but more compact.

ALL of your efforts will pay off in some way, whether through pounds, inches, lower blood pressure, steadier heart rate, better control of blood sugar, improved feeling of well-being.

Consistency is the key. Stick with your efforts and post your trials, tribs and successes here at SparkPeople... :-)

You sound overwhelmed and I agree the "me" time is very important. You have to slow down and take a deep breath and really evaluate what you want.

Lock yourself in the bathroom or another quiet room with a pad of paper and pen and write down your wants, desires, goals, etc. About anything not just about weight loss and then put the pad of paper somewhere and forget about it 24 hours.

The next day look at it again and if those things on the list are still important to you then figure out the strategies on how to accomplish them. Remember nothing can happen overnight so set your strategies in small measurable steps.

"Positive thinking will let you do everything better than negative thinking will."

It sounds like you've taken too much on your shoulders and need to start by focusing on taking care of yourself! Double check with your partner...is he pulling his weight in the responsibility department...? Fight to lighten your load and to have some "me" time...both to pamper yourself and to work out!

If you and your partner need some help in working better together as a team, seriously consider talking together with a therapist.

Make a list of healthy things you can enjoy which help you to feel better...relaxed, recharged, energized, etc. Usually this list has two sub-lists, one for more physical activities and the other for more laid-back activities.

Then be assertive and stake out your claim on consistent time for yourself to enjoy the things on this list.

Along the way, see if you can start bumping up your workout times and / or intensity. Not by leaps and bounds...baby steps...slow and steady wins the race!

Keep coming back and post your struggles and progress...we're all here for you!

Don

thanks Don. i'm just taking too much in i think... it's my forever struggle. drink water all the time. eat good foods generally. need to eat less fat and carbs, even though what i often eat are "good" ones. exercising much more than i used to but need to do more. getting about 5d of 20+min cardio and 1-2d that includes wts. i feel responsibility stress w the kids and finances and marriage etc... and seem to sabotage myself so often in that context...

There are many ways to begin...try some or all of these: 1) drinking more water...8 glasses or more a day, 2) look at the quantity and quality of your food choices...how can you begin to improve on this...? 3) look at the frequency, duration, consistency and intensity of your workouts...how can you improve on this...?

You'll find TONS of info here @ SP to help in all of these areas and MORE.

You'll also get many ideas from others who have "been there, done that" here on the message boards.

Any idea where you would like to begin to make changes...?

Hello there. i'm trying to see how i can fit into SP world and such. i'm trying to get lighter to decrease inflamation in my joints. i'm 36y/o and too young to hurt. 3 kids later, i can't believe how much harder it is too loose the fat. every kid took me further into that bulge and subsequent difficulties. i've been trying to loose since 12/07 and have dropped 8#. w my other kids i dropped it so much faster and btw had much more interest in loosing it. i'm exercising now often just to keep my nerves off the edge and to be better to those around me. i seem to also eat however for the same reason! emoticon

Another Team has tried this and I thought it looked like a promising idea:

If anyone on the Team is having a food/diet/health/personal crisis which may undo your hard work (i.e. tempt you into poor eating choices, or to not workout or other problems), come HERE and yell "HELP!"

To begin with, anyone who would like to be a resource and "be there" for someone in need, please reply to this message both to let us know AND to subscribe yourself to this thread so that you will receive the alert when someone has hit the "panic button."

Let's be there for each other to help us all make the best possible choices for ourselves!
